This week I’m chatting with Sharlene Royer, the Assistant Stunt Coordinator for utterly brilliant ‘Shogun’, which recently won a record-breaking 18 Emmys - including a very well-deserved one for Outstanding Stunt Performance!Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s 'Shōgun' is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village...It is an outstanding drama, available on Hulu in the USA, and on Disney+ in the UK and other territories. It's well worth watching and catching up if you haven't seen it yet, as it appears it will be returning for two more seasons following its record-breaking Emmy win.Born and raised in Quebec to a Haitian mother and French Canadian father, Sharlene was a dancer from the ages of 7 to 18, before moving into modelling and acting. However, following a meeting with legendary Stunt Coordinator, Alan Oliney, she was encouraged to try stunt work, and found her calling. She soon became a very sought-after stunt performer being requested to double stars such as Halle Berry, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Williams and many more.On 'Shōgun', Sharlene discusses her work on the epic drama as Assistant Stunt Coordinator, working alongside her boss (and life-partner) Lauro David Chartrand-Del Valle, developing the hugely complex Emmy-winning “cannon” scene, melding VFX, physical effects and stunts for the “earthquake”, plus location scouting, stunt coordinating in the pandemic and lots more.If that wasn’t enough, Sharlene was also Assistant Stunt Coordinator on season one of the hit CBS drama ‘Tracker’, for which she became the first Black, Female Stunt Coordinator to win a Leo Award from The Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of British Columbia. She talks about working with lead actor Justin Hartley (and his photographic memory), and also working with Justin alongside guest star Jenson Ackles... who sound like they were as much fun together as you'd expect!Still want more? Warning, there are SPOILERS below, and in the interview itself, so if you haven’t seen the final season yet, go and watch!..Still here?Okay, so if you remember the end of Season 3, the gang were left in a new reality, but also powerless. Whilst they do find a way to get their powers back, they also discover, they are the problem… After various, very "Umbrella Academy" type things happen, Ben, and his new girlfriend Jen, end up merging into a giant blob monster which threatens to destroy the Earth… And that’s where Laurent and his team at FOLKS come in...FOLKS have been involved with 'The Umbrella Academy' since season one, but for the final season, the team received its most significant mandate yet. They were responsible for conceptual pre-production work to establish the creatures' identities, post-viz, final elaboration of complex shots, and creation of character and environment assets, animation, simulation, and compositing.Along with creating the monstrous version of Ben and Jen, they also enhanced the environment for a Christmas-themed sequence, adding crowd characters, vendors, snow, and more. Welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I’m chatting with Jina An & Shirley Song, the composers behind Netflix's brilliant adult animated series ‘Exploding Kittens’.If you haven’t yet caught ‘Exploding Kittens’, the series is inspired by the beloved card game from Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal webcomic, Elan Lee, and Shane Small. After a meeting in heaven, there is a general consensus that Earth sucks, so God (voiced by the wonderful Tom Ellis from ‘Lucifer’) gets fired and sent to Earth to reconnect with humanity. The catch? He’s trapped in the body of a chubby house cat. As part of Godcat’s rehabilitation, he moves in with a dysfunctional family and tries to solve their problems, but ends up spending a lot of time chasing laser pointers. And to top it off, Godcat’s next-door neighbour, who is also a cat, turns out to be none other than his nemesis, the Antichrist. It is brilliant, hilariously funny, and Season 1 is all on Netflix right now!Jina and Shirley have been composing together pretty much since college, and were tasked with creating a soundtrack that captures the show's explosive energy. This week I’m chatting with Krista Perry, the Stunt Coordinator for Season 3 of ‘Reservation Dogs’.‘Reservation Dogs’, which is available on Disney+ in the UK and on FX on Hulu in the USA, follows four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma who steal, rob, and save in order to get to the exotic, mysterious, and faraway land of California.Krista Perry is a native Californian, who grew up travelling the country at the age of eight for competitive swimming. Finishing out her career as an All American Swimmer in the state of California. There's nothing in the water she has not mastered or attempted. Hello, and welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I’m chatting with Ramsey Avery, the Production Designer behind Disney & Hulu’s sci-fi horror film ’No One Will Save You’. Written and directed by Brian Duffield, ‘No One Will Save You’ follows Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever), an exiled anxiety-ridden homebody, who must battle an alien that found its way into her home. What makes the movie particularly unique is that it features only 5 words of dialogue in the entire movie. This made Ramsey’s job an interesting challenge as he needed to help showcase all of the unspoken storytelling through his production design. It meant that his sets and designs had to be intricately planned and executed to make up for lack of words and to use the world around the main character to explain everything from who Brynn is and her backstory to the reasoning behind her choices and her relationships with other people in town with whom she only has a single non-verbal interaction.It’s a fantastic little film, and if you’re in the UK you can watch it right now on Disney+, or in the USA you can find it on Hulu.In the interview, we not only discuss Ramsey’s work on ‘No One Will Save You’, but also his impressive back catalogue of projects including ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’, ‘Minority Report’, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, and ‘Team America: World Police’. This week, I'm chatting with the lovely composer, Jake Monaco.Jake Monaco is an American film and TV composer, who has worked on a huge array of projects, from some of the biggest film scores of the past decade, to children’s TV shows, and everything in between. We’ve previously spoken to Jake about his work on Netflix’s ‘Dinotrux’, Amazon’s ‘The Stinky & Dirty Show’, along with working as a producer and composer of additional music for Christophe Beck, where he worked on things such as ‘Frozen’, ‘The Hangover’ trilogy, and ‘The Muppets’.His latest project is a bit of a departure from his previous work, as he scores National Geographic’s ‘Incredible Animal Journeys’, narrated by Hawkeye himself, Jeremy Renner, which you can find on Disney+ in the UK. This fascinating nature series follows the travels of a huge array of animals, from the humpback to the dung beetle, and many other species. This week, I'm chatting with Emmy-winning and ADG award-nominated production designer, Adam Rowe.Adam Rowe is an Art Director and Production Designer for TV and stage, who has worked across a huge eclectic mix of projects including the new 'Quantum Leap', 'Mr. Mayor', CBS series 'Good Sam', and our beloved ‘The Good Place’. One of his other more recent projects was the Netflix series ‘Glamorous’, from 'Star Trek: Discovery' and 'Quantico' producer Jordan Nardino.‘Glamorous’ introduces us to makeup-obsessed and gender non-conforming queer Marco (played by Miss Benny) as he’s given the opportunity of a lifetime to work under makeup mogul, Madolyn Addison (played by Kim Cattrall), and the makeup empire she’s created. While navigating his new job, Marco also finds challenges in his new life and what it means to be queer.In the interview, we discuss Adam's fascinating work creating this glamorous world, including the unique office space, Marco's room, and various other interesting environments. We also talk about how they cleverly reused some of the sets for the upcoming reboot of the classic legal series 'Matlock' starring Academy & Emmy Award Winner Kathy Bates.Other projects Adam has worked on include ‘House’, ‘Criminal Minds’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Parks and Recreation’, ‘American Crime Story: Versace’, and the long-running crime dramedy ‘Rizzoli & Isles’.
