It’s Episode 123! Comedians Dane Baptiste (Questions Everything) and Funmbi Omotayo (Quotas Full)  join Flixwatcher to review Dane’s choice, The Terminator. The Terminator is the 1984 sci fi classic from James Cameron starring Arnie as the Terminator, Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor and Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese. The Terminator is sent back in time to 1984 from 2029 to kill Sarah Connor to prevent the leader of the resistance John Connor being born. Reese is sent back by John to protect her and (spoiler!) ensure that John Connor does exist.   The Terminator is still as brilliant as it was in 1984, Terminator 2: Judgement Day might be funnier and have the best special effects ever but this film is more iconic. Everything from the futuristic score by Brad Fiedel, Stan Winston’s amazing animatronics, Arnie’s iconic sunglasses, and the ‘I’ll be back’ line still feels fresh and exciting.   Scores [supsystic-tables id=128] Unsurprisingly The Terminator scores highly across recommendability and repeat viewing, if you’ve not seen it in a while you’ve probably forgotten about the flash of Arnie’s member. It’s episode 122 ! Liz Campbell (Wooden Overcoats, No Space for Heroes) and Zack Fortais-Gomm (The Orphans) join Flixwatcher to review the Monty Python 1979 feature film Life of Brian. Life of Brian is the story of Brian who is accidentally mistaken for Jesus in a series of absurd events and spends the film avoiding his mother and an ever growing group of followers, ending in a musical crucifixion scene.   Considered blasphemous on its release it was unbelievably banned or given an 18 certificate (preventing it from being shown) by 39 local authorities in the UK on its release and outright banned by Ireland and Norway.   Scores [supsystic-tables id=127] As with most Monty Python this a bit hit and miss, there are moments of genius (what did the Romans ever do for us?) and then there’s a scene midway through with aliens. It’s Episode 121 Anna Smith (Girls on Film, Metro, Time Out) and Scarlett (Sunday Times Style and Secrets of the Side Hustle) join Flixwatcher to review Anna’s choice The Breaker Upperers. The Breaker Upperers is a 2018 New Zealand comedy from Jackie van Beek and Madeleine Sami who wrote, direct and star the film. It also features the boy from Boy (Jordan Rolleston) and a cameo from Jermaine Clement. The Breaker Upperers is an agency run by Mel and Jen who provide an easy way out for people who can’t end their own relationships, in an increasingly bizarre situation including faking disappearances and fake pregnancy. The film benefits mainly from its two main characters willingness to go all the way, it’s closest comparisons would be Bridesmaids or the Wedding Crashers even, but without the need to go the gross-out gags. While on the outside it might be about people too lazy to break up their failed relationships it’s actually more about friendship and learning to grow with each other.   Scores [supsystic-tables id=126] There are really, really funny moments (dream sequence Celine Dion karaoke) and then some uneven less funny moments (striptease for a lesbian police officer that runs a bit too long) and it sometimes feels a bit like a sketch show rather than a feature film. That said if you’re a fan of this slightly quirky Kiwi humor you’ll find a lot to enjoy. Best enjoyed with a group of friends, The Breaker Upperers scores a very respectable 4.13 overall. It’s episode 119 Film and TV score composer Anne Nikitin and Ben from Eat the Mess podcast join Flixwatcher to review the Thom Yorke and Paul Thomas Anderson collaboration Anima. Anima is the third solo album from Thom Yorke, it is also a short 15 minute film featuring the tracks Not the News, Traffic and Dawn Chorus. As you’d expect from Thom Yorke Anima is a surreal, dreamlike journey that starts of a dreary, commuter train and ends with hope (?) on a bus in the morning light and in between there is gravity defying dancing.   Scores [supsystic-tables id=124] The end result is a beautiful collaboration of music and cinema, it is a joy to see Thom Yorke dance aided by some incredible choreography from Damien Jalet. It’s Episode 117! Jake from Ghibliotheque and Louisa co-founder and creative director of Girls on Tops tees join Flixwatcher for Jake’s choice Hard Eight. Hard Eight is the debut film from Paul Thomas Anderson starring PTA regulars John C Reilly and Philip Baker Hall, and Gwyneth Paltrow with cameos from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Samuel L Jackson. This 1996 film is massively different to Boogie Nights that came out the year after in both story, style and tone. Scores [supsystic-tables id=122] Hard Eight is a more reserved, slow and atmospherically dark film. The characters are difficult to like and at times the lack of plot makes for frustrating viewing. Daryl and Jeanette from Sudden Double Deep return to Flixwatcher to review Daryl’s choice Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a 2011 version of the classic John le Carre novel directed by Tomas Alfredson, starring the cream of British (albeit male) actors including Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Graham, Toby Jones and John Hurt.   In short, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is about finding a mole in M16 during the height of the Cold War in 1973. A lot more happens around that but to try and give a respectable summary wouldn’t do the complex plot justice. Scores [supsystic-tables id=121] Some people might be infuriated by it’s purposeful slow pace but if you stick with it you’ll be richly rewarded. It is worth it just to watch Gary Oldman swimming in Hampstead Heath mens ponds with his prescription glasses on - if that hasn’t sold it then nothing will. The legend goes that someone watched Bee Movie 357 on Netflix - if you’ve seen Bee Movie you will find this baffling. It’s fair to say Bee Movie is a bizarre film, it starts off fairly harmless with bee puns but quickly descends into a weird comment on communism and humanity. It’s Episode 114! Adelle Drover (Roll Credits) and Clarisse Loughrey (Independent and Kermode and Mayo) return to Flixwatcher to review Adelle’s choice the 2004 zombie romcom Shaun of the Dead. Shaun of the Dead is the first in the Cornetto Trilogy of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg post Spaced feature films. Pegg is Shaun, a directionless Londoner caught up in a zombie apocalypse while trying to get back together with his girlfriend with his best mate Ed (Nick Frost) in tow.   At a run time of 99 minutes Shaun of the Dead manages to fit in numerous nods to all your favourite zombie films, Spaced references, classic lines “you’ve got red on you”, cameos from the who’s who of British comedy, Queen on the soundtrack and a commendable level of gore. It’s Episode 113! Zoe Jeyes (the home of podcasting Kings Place) and Helen O’Hara (Empire Magazine) return to Flixwatcher to discuss Zoe’s choice A Ghost Story. A Ghost Story is a sort of time travelling, supernatural love story of sorts. Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck are a nameless couple about to move house when tragedy strikes in the form of a car crash that kills Affleck. Following Mara’s visit to the hospital, Affleck becomes a ghost with a sheet over him. Unable to move on Affleck becomes trapped in the house they shared long after Mara leaves, terrorises a Spanish family and tries to retrieve a note left in a hole in the wall by Mara. That’s basically it, oh and Mara eats a pie.   Scores [supsystic-tables id=118] A Ghost Story is either your cup of tea or your cup of rancid bog water - you’ll either love it, be massively frustrated or just bored by it. It’s Episode 111! Clarisse Loughrey (Independent and Kermode and Mayo) and Adelle Drover (Roll Credits) join Flixwatcher to review Clarisse’s choice Snowpiercer. Snowpiercer is a 2013 dystopian science fiction action film by Korean genius Bong Joon-ho starring Chris (Steve Rogers) Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Song Kang-ho, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt and Ed Harris. Despite being released in America in 2013 its biggest UK release was May 2019 on Netflix. In an attempt to combat global warming (take note planet) climate engineering goes wrong and turns the planet into a barren iced wasteland and the only survivors left are travelling, in order of class (upper at the front having orgies, middle class in the middle and the lower class at the back eating cockroach protein bars and keeping the travel running) on Snowpiercer as it travels at speed to no apparent destination. Following the abduction of two children from the back of the train Evans launches a mission to get to the front of the train to take control and violence and bizarreness ensues, including Octavia Spencer cracking an egg on a child’s face.   Scores [supsystic-tables id=116] There was a LOT of love for Snowpiercer, especially Clarisse but there was a record number of reviews tweeted too (thanks everyone!) and rightly so, only losing points on repeat viewing (over two hours is a long repeat viewing) and some for small screen but high all round for recommendability and engagement, scoring 4.11 overall. It’s Episode 110! Jeanette and Daryl from Sudden Double Deep join us to review the 2017 documentary Faces Places. Faces Places follows director Agnès Varda and photographer and muralist JR as they journey through rural France and form an unlikely friendship. On their journey, they meet ordinary people and take their photos which are then printed larger than life and pasted to buildings and other large scale objects.   Faces Places in an hour and a half of celebrating the ordinary and making everyday beautiful. It’s Episode 109! Helen O’Hara (Empire Magazine) and Zoe Jeyes (the home of podcasting Kings Place) join to Flixwatcher to discuss Helen’s choice Hearts Beat Loud. Hearts Beat Loud is a 2018 American comedy-drama with a stellar cast that includes Nick Offerman, Kiersey Clemons, Ted Danson, Sasha Lane, Blythe Danner and Toni Collette. Grumpy record store owner Offerman is facing the closure of his store and his only daughter living home for the university while also dealing with his mother's dementia and the on and off affections of his landlady but manages to also write an awesome pop tune with his daughter on the side. Hearts Beat Loud could be High Fidelity’s sweeter, less of dick, Spotify friendly sibling. It features some nice niche music moments including karaoke to Chairlift’s Bruises and up-selling of Animal Collective and that 90s nostalgia.   Scores [supsystic-tables id=114] With a runtime of one hour and 37 mins it zips along in a breezy way and is a joy to spend time with. It’s Episode 108! Mat Whitecross and Eran Creevy return this time for Matt’s choice The Other Side of the Wind the last film directed, co-written, co-produced and co-edited by Orson Wells, released in in 2018 by Netflix after more than 40 years in development. To say The Other Side of the Wind is experimental is an understatement - shot in 1970 it was meant to be Wells’ big comeback but continued into the 1980s and was caught up in various legal and financial troubles and languished in film purgatory, despite some attempts after his death, until Netflix gave it a new lease of life. The plot is a film-within-a-film narrative, following the last day of a Hollywood director (assume based on Wells) as he hosts a screening of his last film (assume this film) and the film footage screened is his satire on avant-garde European and Hollywood cinema of 1970s. How you feel about this film very much depends of your relationship with Wells and his work and history, it is ultimately a filmmakers film, and there is very little more than that, other than a period piece for the decline of classic Hollywood and the arrival of auteurs. Scores [supsystic-tables id=113] Definitely, a companion piece to the documentary They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead and The Other Side of the Wind scores mixed reviews from guests and Flixwatcher. It’s Episode 107! Cariad Lloyd (Griefcast) and Edith Bowman (Soundtracking With) return, this time for Cariad’s choice Don’t Think Twice. Don’t Think Twice is a 2016 comedy drama about an improv troupe (The Commune) in New York written, directed and starring Mike Birbiglia. It also stars Keegan-Michael Key and Gillian Jacobs. The Commune’s harmony is threatened when a scout from a Saturday Night Live-style show - Weekend Live - comes to see their show and offers an audition to two of the members. If the thought of an improv comedy drama fills you with dread, don’t fear, it is as much a film about friendship as it is about the improv scene. At 92 minutes you can easily give this film a good and have an hour and a half with wonderful company with bonus Ben Stiller.   Scores [supsystic-tables id=112] Don't Think Twice scores very generously across all the categories, helped by its zippy runtime of 92 minutes to score a very respectable 4.28 overall. Its Episode 106! Hannah (LWL) and Ella (Culture Whisper) return for Ella’s choice Miss Stevens. Miss Stevens is a 2016 drama directed by Julia Hart starring Lily Rabe in the titular role and Timothée Chalamet. Miss Stevens chaperones three drama students to a weekend state drama competition and that’s the plot. At the same time the students are competing against each other at the event reciting their favourite drama pieces there is drama in real life. Miss Stevens is struggling with the death of her mother and on a personal journey through grief but distracted by the advances of a sleazy teacher and the complicated affections of a teenage Timothée. The star of the show is Chalamet, acting his chops off for the competition and everyone in the film, the result of this leaves everyone else looking a bit average. Ultimately, Miss Stevens is a road trip for her, but her journey is eclipsed by how good Chalamet is and while he is brilliant he takes the focus away from her and into his less developed character. There is also an awkward subplot of their romantic attraction that the film didn’t need to have. Scores [supsystic-tables id=111] Miss Stevens is not quite the profound and moving experience the filmmakers want it to be but it’s still an interesting film and a must view for any Chalamet fans. It’s Episode 105! Sam and Louise from the Picturehouse and 90 Minutes or Less Film Fest podcasts return for Sam’s choice The Holiday. The Holiday is a 2006 Nancy Meyers (What Women Want, Something’s Gotta Give) romantic drama/comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as pre-Airbnb home swappers and Jude Law and Jack Black as their respective if not wholly convincing love interests. Set at Christmas is it a guaranteed feature on TV over Christmas despite not being particularly Christmassy other than continuing to give an illusion of picturesque snow in a (fake) English village, rather than the slush fest it is in reality. Diaz swaps her massive LA home for Winslet’s tiny village cottage and encounters a drunk and charming Law. Winslet is depressingly obsessed with a complete slimeball at work and trying to wean herself off him meets an old man and for no romantic reasons ends up with Black. If you can buy Jack Black as a romantic lead and that Winslet would ever be rejected by anyone ever you’ll probably enjoy this. If you haven’t seen it before, it might have something to with the terrible film posters, it isn’t as bad as you might expect it to be. It is too long - over two hours - it could easily be 90 minutes. Scores [supsystic-tables id=110]The runtime definitely loses The Holiday points on repeat viewing and engagement - it doesn’t need the full two hours and fifteen minutes - however it still manages 3.78 overall. Its Episode 104! Gareth and Miriam (fellow Shabbos Rollers quizzers at the Bigger Boat Film Quiz) return for Gareth’s choice, Gerald’s Game. Gerald’s Game is a 2017 Netflix film by Mike Flanagan based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. It stars Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood. A weekend away to spice up the marriage between Jessie and Gerald takes an unexpected and unfortunate turn when Gerald has a heart attack and dies, with Jessie handcuffed to the bed. This happens early on and the rest of the film is focused on whether Jessie will find the mental and physical strength to escape or will she die handcuffed to the bed. No spoilers here but let’s say the outcome is not for the faint-hearted or anyone really, it will take a certain strength to make it through.   Scores [supsystic-tables id='109'] Overall Gerald’s Game scored quite high from everyone apart from Miriam and takes a bit of a hit in the repeat viewing (when you’ve watched it you’ll know why!) but scores a very respectable 3.52 overall. It’s Episode 103 and Flixwatcher are joined by British filmmakers Eran Creevy and Mat Whitecross to review the 2019 Netflix produced Triple Frontier. Triple Frontier boasts an all star cast of Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal, direction from J. C Chandor with the story by Mark Boal. They are a group of Special Operations soldiers who reunite for a heist to steal a lot of money from a South American drug lord.   The first half of the film is the classic get the gang back together and the second half is the fallout from them stealing more money than they expected to steal. Which is the films major downfall, the motivation for the heist is they think they deserve to steal this money that isn’t theirs and the chain of events are triggered by their bigger greed of stealing more than originally planned to take. If you can buy this as a major plot point then you’ll probably enjoy this film. Scores [supsystic-tables id=108]Triple Frontier has all the elements that should make a great heist film but fails to deliver, it lacks the tension and surprise that is required to make this anything more than a standard action flick. Thelma and Louise is the 1991 Ridley Scott directed film written by Callie Khouri (Nashville) which won its only Oscar for Original Screenplay. It stars Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon in the title roles and a very famous and naked first appearance of Brad Pitt. A girls weekend away escalates quickly into a manhunt after Louise shoots a man who attempts to rape Thelma, they plan an escape to Mexico with Harvey Keitel’s potentially sympathetic police officer on their tail. Scores [supsystic-tables id=107] Thelma and Louise is a feminist classic before making feminist classics was a thing, it’s ending is so ingrained in popular and film culture and it’s impossible not feel and love the two title characters. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is the Netflix 2018 Coen Brothers western anthology film. There are six vignettes in this film, with a number of high profile actors including Tim Blake Nelson, James Franco, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, Tom Waits and Zoe Kazan, varying in length and tone. The stories range from a singing cowboy, a grizzled old prospector and a sinister impresario, what ties them all loosely together is death. There is death everywhere and often without reason or meaning, and definitely gruesome or bloody. For this special Flixwatcher episode Cathy and Dave from the Cinemile host Kobi and Helen for Kobi’s film choice Robocop! Robocop (the original Paul Verhoeven cyberpunk action film version of course) was the favourite film of nine year-old Kobi, it’s the story of futuristic Detroit where crime is high and the solution is to implant a dead cop into a robot. It should be noted Robocop is not suitable for nine year-olds!! Being Verhoeven it is almost excessively violent, a rogue ED209 peppering an unfortunate employee, Murphy being shot to pieces and the toxic goop incident being particularly graphic and grisly. Surprisingly Robocop hasn’t aged too badly, the stop motion effects from Rob Bottin still look pretty convincing and the performance from Peter Weller adds genuine character and empathy to Robocop. The plot and dialogue maybe haven’t aged as well and forget about the actual science, but it could have been much worse. Scores [supsystic-tables id=105] No one loved revisiting Robocop more than Dave, not even nine year-old Kobi would have given such high scores! It’s no Back To The Future so a 4.5 from Kobi for recommendability, so much love from Dave (probably too much love) which brings Robocop an overall score of 3.87. “Excuse me, I have to go. It’s best not to try and unpick Inception - top line is it is a story about dreams, grief, memory and folding streets soundtracked to Edith Piaf. At first watch it is simply visually stunning, from exploding European streets, Escher staircases and a mind bending anti-gravity fight scene. It is also blessed with one of the best ensemble casts of recent years, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard, Pete Postlethwaite (in one of his final performances), Michael Caine and Lukas Haas. If that doesn’t pique your interest then nothing will. Nightcrawler is the 2014 film debut from Dan Gilroy starring Jake Gyllenhaal as entrepreneur/psychopath Louis/Lou Bloom. Set in LA it is a biting satire and black humoured look at the murky world of true crime TV. Bloom ends up finding success being a first on the scene of a crime/accident to film the action/victims to sell to ruthless TV producer Rene Russo. Gyllenhaal really gives himself to this film, physically and as a character, gone is the beautiful Jake we’ve come to love and in is creepy, Patrick Bateman meth addict Jake. He is supported by an excellent cast of Russo with Riz Ahmed as an unlucky production assistant and Bill Paxton as a rival cameraman/collateral damage. Scores [supsystic-tables id=102] Overall Nightcrawler scores a very high 4.15, it won’t be for everyone’s taste as it is pretty dark but if that’s your bag then go ahead and enjoy. It’s episode 98! Corrina and Sarah from Picturehouse Podcast return for Corrina’s choice, the 2000 Christian Bale film American Psycho. American Psycho is a 2000 film by Mary Hannon based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis starring Christian Bale, Reece Witherspoon, Jared Leto, Willem Dafoe and Chloë Sevigny - if that doesn’t get you excited then go home now. Misunderstood on its release, loosely thrown into the horror pile for its strangely minimal violence onscreen (most is implied and it doesn’t even come close to the book) despite being a darkly hilarious journey into white privilege, toxic masculinity and rampant consumerism. Despite Ellis himself saying he didn’t think the film was necessary it feels more necessary in today’s ever more unbelievable society and feels every bit as uncomfortable. If anything it deserves a revisit just for Christian Bale’s performance. Before he focused on physical transformations, Batman and winning Oscars he very nearly killed his career with this hilarious and disturbing performance (apparently inspired by Tom Cruise - the person not one of his characters), the studios wanted Leo di Caprio and what a different film that would have been. It’s episode 97! Stephanie and Ems from The Mighty Foof return to review Arrival, Stephanie’s choice. Arrival is a 2016 science fiction film from Denis Villenenue starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. Arrival is not your typical alien invasion film, it’s much deeper and thoughtful and there’s no green aliens with long fingers. Aliens arrive on earth and refreshingly don’t want to wipe out humanity but instead communicate with Amy Adams linguist. It’s Episode 96! Sofie Hagen (Secret Dinosaur Cult and Made of Human) and Imriel Morgan (Wanna Be & Shout Out Network) return for Sofie’s choice 22 July. 22 July is a 2018 film from Paul Greengrass, it is a fictional dramatisation of the real life events from 2011 when Anders Behring Breivik committed horrific violence on the island of Utøya and Oslo. The film could be viewed as three parts. The first part shows the calculated destruction and massacre that Breivik inflicts upon defenceless teens as they try and escape. The second part is standard drama, giving a voice to the victims as they try to recover and Breivik in court. The final part is a rushed attempt at offering hope and some kind of reconciliation of guilt for those who survived. Scores [supsystic-tables id='99']The end result is over two and half hours of messy filmmaking, while its intentions are to tell the victims stories and maybe to show the strength of family but it is still unbearably bleak.   It’s Episode 95! Josh and Boyd (Footballistically Arsenal) return for Josh’s choice, the award-winning documentary Icarus. Icarus is 2017 documentary from Bryan Fogel, an amateur cyclist who looks into whether he can improve his performance by injecting drugs. In the process of looking into finding someone to help him dope he accidentally uncovers a legacy of historic doping by the Russian athletics team, as you do. What starts out as a Supersize Me guinea pig project ends up being one of the biggest whistleblowing documentaries in sport ever uncovered, it even won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The end result is a mixed bag, the scandal documentary uncovers is mind-blowing and has thrilling elements but it also suffers from being a bit flabby and unfocused (as you expect from a story that didn’t exist when the filming started). Scores [supsystic-tables id='98']Kobi scored Icarus a whopping 4.75 for recommendability (no Back to the Future but close!) and it scored reasonably generously across the other categories (except repeat viewing) to score 3.33 overall. It’s Episode 94! Louise and Sam from 90 Minute or Less Film Fest join Flixwatcher for Louise’s choice The Birdcage (which is not a 90 minute film!) https://ninetyminfilmfest.podbean.com/ The Birdcage is a 1996 remake of La Cage aux Folles starring Robin Williams (Armand) and Nathan Lane (Albert) as a gay couple who own a Miami drag club, who are forced to play a straight couple and entertain Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest at a dinner party. It also features a Hank Azaria performance wearing very little apart from denim hotpants. The Birdcage was the 9th highest grossing film in American in 1996, while that seems surprising it is a testament to the draw of Robin Williams. While The Birdcage is a good 40 minutes longer than it should be the performances from Williams and Lane make it just about worth the inflated runtime. It’s Episode 93! Miriam and Gareth, fellow Shabbos Rollers, join Flixwatcher to review Joe (Adam & Joe) Cornish’s debut film Attack the Block. As well as being Cornish’s debut it is also John Boyega’s first film too, starring as Moses. A gang leader whose Bonfire Night features mugging, being arrested and battling aliens. Showing his influences on his sleeve, Attack the Block takes e.t, Aliens, Signs and Star Wars and transplants them into the social housing towers of south London. Scores [supsystic-tables id='96'] Mixing sci-fi and horror with a sort of coming of age story Attack the Block manages to be both spectacularly cinematic and terribly British at the same time while throwing in some social commentary for good measure. It’s Episode 92! Kelly and Sam from the Curzon Film Podcast join us for Kelly’s choice the award-winning 2018 film Roma from Alfonso Cuarón. Roma is a semi-autobiographical memoir to his childhood in 1970s Mexico. Cuarón wrote, directed, produced and edited this film and is unsurprisingly his most personal film to date. It wouldn’t be out of place to declare Roma a masterpiece. It tells the story of Cleo the live-in housekeeper of a family in Mexico against the backdrop of the Corpus Christi Massacre and the marital breakdown of the parents. Roma moves between banal normality, washing the floors and cleaning the house to extreme drama, a still birth and near drowning and moments of joy in the everyday with visits to the cinema and holidaying with the family. Scores [supsystic-tables id=95] Roma was unfortunately let down by the small screen score - it’s black and white cinematography deserves the big screen and the scores reflect this, overall Roma scores a very respectable 4.3. It’s Episode 91! Joining us to review the 2017 documentary Out of Thin Air are returning guests Taylor (her choice) and Hannah from Drunk Women Solving Crime. Out of Thin Air mixes interviews and dramatisation to investigate the mystery surrounding the disappearances of Guðmundur Einarsson and Geirfinnur Einarsson in 1974 in Iceland and the subsequent arrests and imprisonments of six suspects, at which point things are definitely not what they seem. The story itself the perfect true crime stuff, two people disappear and to this day have never been found. The suspects are arrested, some of them have shady backgrounds and (despite little evidence) are convicted and then the twist, in 2013 a report brought forward the motion to retrial the suspects. This documentary, however, fails to really capture the mystery and intrigue and it ends up being a bit confusing and at worst, quite boring. True crime fans will probably enjoy this as would anyone who remembers the case but as a piece of documentary cinema, it doesn’t deliver the goods. Happy New Year it’s Episode 90! We’re starting 2019 with returning guests JoJCast’s Jo and Jay, reviewing Jo’s choice Pride.   Pride is a 2014 British film true story of the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign during the 1980s that supported and raised funds for the miners during the strikes. It’s easy to lump this in with the likes of The Full Monty - Pride does have moments of humour but it’s not the driving force. Its story was very nearly lost and if you know it then you’ll realise how it’s almost unbelievable - while the film does employ some artistic license most of what is depicted is the truth. So important is its story it could have been leaden with over sentimentality or sugarcoated over some of the more serious elements. It’s not a documentary or a biopic, it’s a starting point for learning more about the story and the work LGSM, a documentary would certainly be welcomed though. Pride has such a wide appeal that you can’t feel for everyone involved, supported by an excellent cast that includes Dominic West, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Paddy Considine is it unsurprising Flixwatcher and guests gave it a lot of love. Ep #089 Allied with Stephanie and Emma From The Mighty Foof Podcast It’s Episode 89! Ems and Stephanie from The Mighty Foof join Flixwatcher to review the 2016 Robert Zemeckis film Allied starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard.   Allied pitches itself as a wartime spy thriller early on but quickly descends into dreary wartime melodrama, not even the wonderful Marion Cotillard can save this cumbersome disappointment. On paper this should have been so much more, but unintentional comedy moments (sex in a sandstorm) and complete lack of passion between Pitt and Cotillard make it not only disappointing but a bit embarrassing for all involved.   There isn’t enough spying or action to make it the wartime thriller it thinks it might be and the romance unconvincing. There are some highlights, the costumes deserved its lone Academy Award nomination and the Casablanca scenes have some fun. There really is no reason to watch this film four times though, once is more than enough if you manage to make it through its laborious run time of two hours and four minute run time. It’s Episode 88! Olly Man (Modern Mann) and Alix Fox (Unexpected Fluids) to review Olly’s choice the 1975 Woody Allen comedy Love and Death. Unbelievably Love and Death comes in between the bonkers Sleeper and largely considered his masterpiece, Annie Hall. The tail end of what is often referred to as his ‘earlier funnier ones’ and Love and Death is funny and silly. This comes before what is now largely an unwatchable experience, Manhattan, and the obsession with girls clearly more than half Allen’s age. Did we mention it’s silly? So silly. Some of the visual gags and slapstick are still funny and it’s so ridiculous at times that it zips along quite nicely with its 95-minute run-time. It also features a perfect performance by Diane Keaton who gets as many of the brilliant gags and witty dialogue - which doesn’t happen much for actresses at all, let alone the 70s. It’s Episode 87! Not Another Book Podcast return one last time for Books and Rhymes choice the 2014 documentary Iris, about the 97 year old fashion icon Iris Apfel. Who is Iris and why would you make a documentary about her? Two questions that the documentary doesn’t really answer. This documentary follows Iris around as she shops for the unusual and colourful clothes and accessories she is now know for, gives speeches on fashion and style and hanging around with her adorable husband. Her fame as we know her now arrived about 2005 after an exhibition of her clothes by The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art but she achieved success with the textile company she owned with her husband prior to this. Scores [supsystic-tables id='90'] As a documentary, Iris doesn’t really teach you much about her life or Iris behind the clothes and accessories. It merely captures on film a snapshot of her life, which feels like a wasted opportunity to learn more about this fascinating person. It’s Episode 86! Imriel Morgan (Wanna Be Podcast and Shout Out Network) and Sofie Hagen (Made of Human and Secret Dinosaur Cult) join us for Imriel’s choice, the 2018 Netflix film To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Based on the novel of the same name by Jenny Han, directed by Susan Johnson and starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo. While there is nothing particular new or surprising about the plot of To All The Boys, what is surprising and refreshing is the characters and loveliness flowing through the whole film. The lead, Lara, is played by Vietnamese born actress Lana Condor, which considering most female leads in rom coms are white Americans is a pretty big deal. What makes it even more of a bid deal is they don’t draw attention to it or make a plot point, boom! Zipping along at 99 minutes the film is a breeze and the chemistry between the two leads is always believable. Scores [supsystic-tables id='89']There was a lot of love for To All The Boys from everyone, a LOT of love, nearly so much love that it toppled newly crowned Flixwatcher champion When Harry Met Sally off the top. Is the question When Harry Met Sally asks throughout its weaving in and out of Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) lives though the years. Directed by Rob Reiner and written by Nora Ephron is responsible in part for every other romantic comedy to follow since. The reason why? It’s brilliant. It’s an hour and a half of dazzling brilliance. Not a second is wasted, it’s funny and cute, Crystal and Ryan get equally great lines, Carrie Fisher and it’s set in New York. It’s Episode 83? The brothers de Semlyen Nick (Empire Magazine) and Phil (Time Out) return for Nick’s choice, the 1985 John Landis film Into the Night. Starring Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeffier with a cameo appearance from David Bowie and numerous famous and obscure directors. It’s fair to say this is one of Landis and Goldblums leader know films despite its era and cast, probably because it’s a very strange film. Surprisingly frequently violent and really, really dark it is also punctuated by moments of comedy and moments that wouldn’t be out of place in a David Lynch film. There isn’t really much point in trying to explain the plot, if you’re a fan of any of its stars or directions involved and haven’t seen it yet it’s definitely worth a watch. If you’re a film buff you can always just watch it and play spot the director! Kobi isn’t sure what he thinks of it and Helen thinks it’s weird - Into the Night has many similarities with Midnight Run but without the funny, sweet buddy moments and more nudity. It’s Episode 82! Drunk Women Solving Crime (Hannah and Taylor) join us to review the 2017 documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond – Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton, Hannah’s choice. Jim & Andy is the result of several hours of filming Jim Carrey in ‘character’ behind the scenes on the set for the 1999 film Man on the Moon and Jim Carrey now ruminating on what happened literally and spiritually during the filming. This documentary was released by Netflix and the footage captured was allegedly wanted destroyed by Universal Pictures (who produced Man on the Moon) because they didn’t want people to think Jim Carrey was an asshole. You can begin to imagine what this documentary is like. Part car crash and part journey into the art involved in perfecting a performance, it’s also one mans tribute to a man he admired and occasionally imitated. Interesting, bizarre, intense and fascinating, it might be a documentary but it’s impossible to tell what is real and what is planned. Scores [supsystic-tables id='84'] There was a lot of love for both Jim AND Andy from Flixwatcher and guests, if there is one word to describe it, it is fascinating - as a documentary and a film - and rare for a documentary rewards with repeat viewings. It’s Episode 81! Alix Fox and Olly Mann from The Modern Mann podcast join Flixwatcher to review Alix’s choice the comedy drama the Fundamentals of Caring, the 2016 film starring Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts. Based on the book, The Revised Fundamentals of Caring, this film version stars Rudd as a carer to wheelchair user Roberts and also features Selima Gomez as a hitchhiker and love interest. While it may feel like the Fundamentals of Caring isn’t saying anything new on the road trip personal journey of development movie trope it does show people with disabilities as normal people, funny, witty humans with sexual desires. Scores [supsystic-tables id='83'] The comedy moments may or may not make you piss your knickers but this road trip and personal journey is sweet and it’s heart in its right place, it’s a cosy indie film with strong performances from all the cast. Let down by a so-so soundtrack and a bit of an odd ending, but with a run time of one hour 37 minutes you can forgive those sins. The Fundamentals of Caring scores a strong 3.37 overall, recommended. This is Episode 80! Not Another Book podcast return, this time for Bookshybooks choice, 10 Cloverfield Lane, the second film in the Cloverfield franchise. 10 Cloverfield Lane is the J. J. Abrams produced 2016 film starring John Goodman (Howard) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Michelle). Following a car crash Michelle wakes up in a bunker, chained to her bed but receiving medical care, is Howard keeping her safe or keeping her prisoner? 10 Cloverfield Lane is at its best when it plays between psychological thriller and perceived horror, it’s let down when the aliens arrive. The tension hinges on Howard, Goodman is superb and the viewer is constantly questioning his intentions - is he really a saviour and keeping them safe or has he had multiple victims - there is no answer even at the end. Scores [supsystic-tables id='82'] 10 Cloverfield Lane works great within its genre, it might not be treading new ground but it plays on its strengths well and Goodmans performance makes it very watchable. It’s Episode 79! Ben (Top Film Tip) and George (Retro Ramble Podcast) return, this time for Ben’s choice the 2016 black comedy Catfight. Catfight is a Greek tragedy of sorts, but mostly a black comedy punctuated with moments of Tom and Jerry style violence. It stars Anne Heche and Sandra Oh as two rivals who are reunited by chance and take out their frustrations of their own failings and jealousy of the other by basically beating the shit out of each other. Scores [supsystic-tables id=81]Catfight received a mix reaction from Flixwatcher, but a lot of love from Ben, while it wasn’t to everyone’s taste there will be an audience for this nihilistic, very dark ultra violent film with extremely unlikeable characters. Pattison as Connie, a small time thief who instigates a series of increasingly catastrophic events in one night after a failed bank robbery. Scores [supsystic-tables id='80'] Good Time relies on the audience to truly suspend their belief and accept the path it embarks on without questioning its logic to an equally frenetic and dizzying soundtrack from Oneohtrix Point Never. With a run time of 99 minutes even the worst Netflix short attention span watchers should be able give it a view. Good Time scores highly across all the categories and scores 3.54 overall.
