Episode 434 | Unequal Athletes
How controversial can a sculpture of two athletes of the opposite sex be? Who will be depicted as stronger? The man or woman? And finally, how can we craft an artistic piece without being judged by the feminist movement? Even though many athletes, regardless of their sex, may seem to be stronger than others, altering their proportions when it comes to sculpting and leaving women as small as they are may seem is not the best way to go. Joe Brown and his sculpture of two athletes made for the 1936 Summer Olympics is a great example to study these concerns and nudity issues. The woman is not only smaller than the man but it is shown naked, unlike the man who is dressed. Feminists have raised a flag over the issue of inequality, and we have joined the debate to support them with further evidence. My classmate Eric, Madelaine, and I have come together to discuss the matter in a few minutes, considering design elements like symmetry, scale, and proportion, plus social standards and moral values in our society.
