The Ghent Altarpiece is an essential Catholic artwork that holds religious and historical value. It had a turbulent history, especially during its time in Berlin when it was sawed in half to display its front and back. Today, we will discuss the Ghent Altarpiece, which Jan Van Eyck and Hubert Van Eyck painted. They made this painting during the Northern Renaissance period, and the theme is based on Christianity. Ghent Altarpiece's meaning is the Biblical story of Jesus Christ and his sacrifice. You can see the significance of Christ's sacrifice when they show it with a lamb pouring blood into a chalice. This lamb is a depiction of Christ's sacrifice. In this painting, you can see how the lamb is an essential reference to Christ because next to the altar are angels holding a cross. The angels and cross depict his crucifixion, implying that the lamb in the image is about to get crucified. The Van Eyck brothers used oil paint for the Ghent Altarpiece to try and make the finest of details on this piece of work. For those who don't know what an altarpiece is, it is a work of art that decorated the space above and behind the altar in a Christian church. That is why the Ghent Altarpiece is in St. John the Baptist, now the Cathedral of St. Bavo.

In this podcast, my group and I discussed the artist Alexander Calder. Alexander Calder created a well-known mobile called “The Pittsburgh”, which a private collector eventually donated to the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport. Allegheny County, now the owners of “The Pittsburgh”, had decided to paint over the original black and white mobile to match the official colors of the county, green and gold. As a group, we discussed whether it was ethically/morally right to change the originality of Calder’s art without advising him on the decision.

Join us in today’s case study of Jackson Pollock and the sale of his art posthumously. We discuss how Dr. Joseph Henderson sold 43 paintings given to him as part of Pollock’s therapy. This sale caused controversy as Pollock’s widow, Lee Krasner, objected to the sale, as she felt she had a more substantial claim to the art and didn’t feel he should profit off his patient’s work.

The adoration of the mystic lamb, also known as Ghent Altarpiece, was begun in the mid-1420 and completed before 1432 by Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert. Jan van Eyck was a Flemish painter who was one of the founders of Early Netherlandish painting, the medium that Jan van used was oil and oak wood to make this painting.  There is no convincing information to determine artistic attribution. The Ghent Altarpiece is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in Saint Bavo’s Cathedral chapel in Belgium, but it was moved for security reasons to the main cathedral chapel, where it is today.  The altarpiece is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world’s treasures. The Altarpiece has been the victim of 13 crimes since its installation, and seven thefts. Nearly 600 years old, the panels have been threatened by theft, war damage, peace settlements, outbreaks of iconoclasm , and have suffered fire damage. The idealization of traditional medieval art gives way to realistic representations of nature and humanity.

We use a scenario involving a stolen Mayan sculpture to discuss the pre-Columbian history and how it relates to art and smuggling. Throughout the episode, we contemplate a central question: which evil is lesser, promoting the pillaging of artworks or having these works be lost forever?

The city of champions was founded on November 27th, 1758 by General John Forbes and was named after a British statesman named “ William Pitt the Elder”. Additionally, Calder was born in 1898 outside of Philadelphia. At first, he initially studied mechanical engineering, but Calder found his office for drawing and sketching animals which turned into a passion. Allegheny county is west of Pennsylvania, bordering West Virginia and Ohio. Additionally,  The Arts and Culture program at the Pittsburgh International Airport is dedicated to showcasing dynamic art and performance produced by local, regional, national, and international artists in all media. Lastly, Alexander Calder created the mobile by making figures which hang and uses air or motors to move around but the original invention/creation was to be pushed or turned by air or any gaseous motion.

In today’s episode of Exploring Art Podcast we will be having Kasey  and Giselle  as guests. We will go over many topics like the Tate gallery, the art piece is known as a Pile of Bricks, and minimalism. We will also be discussing a case study about whether or not this art piece can be considered art and why.

In this podcast, we talked about how art is based on perspective and how artist wants their work to be perceived. For example, the artist wanted his bricks to be perceived as art, and the bricklayer assistant didn't intend for his bricks to be perceived as art. Lastly, art is made to represent something, and although the artist may have made the brick pile to represent something from his own perspective, the bricklayer assistant didn't mean to represent anything since it's his job.

In today's podcast, we discussed Marcel Duchamp's readymade sculpture, "Fountain". We formed our own opinions on whether or not it should have been rejected from the 1917 exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in NYC. We analyzed all aspects of this work as a whole and discussed Duchamp's desired outcome by submitting this sculpture to the exhibition.

After learning the truth, Gledhill decided to take the picture off her wall.
