Education
Mark Taylor
Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future. While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced. Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. The Education on Fire community is shining the torch, so no matter where you are in the world or how you are supporting children this podcast is here for you. ‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’

211: Superheroes of Science with Katy Alexander

211: Superheroes of Science with Katy Alexander

Superheroes of science set to come to life in new comic book from The RemarkablzA new comic book is turning real-life science heroes into superheroes, bringing diverse pioneers of science and engineering to a new generation of young readers in an exciting and engaging format. The Remarkablz is the brainchild of London-based illustrator and game designer Katy Alexander, bringing the stories of scientists and engineers – particularly women, individuals from minority ethnic backgrounds and people with disabilities – to life for children aged 6-12.Radioactive Fallout: Katsuko’s Story reimagines the life and accomplishments of Japanese biochemist Dr Katsuko Saruhashi, known for revealing the spread and impact of radioactive fallout from atomic tests in the Pacific, helping bring an end to above-ground nuclear testing. The comic book traces the amazing adventures of young Katsuko as she gains her superpowers, battles supervillains and discovers her passion for science.Created for children aged 6-12, and produced with dyslexia-friendly fonts, the new comic is designed to inspire, educate and excite young readers, with 24 pages of exciting artwork and storytelling backed up with engaging educational activities and a full biography of Katsuko. The Remarkablz is a small family-run business set up to help combat the lack of diversity in games and books. Building on the success of its Top Quarkz card game, The Remarkablz is partnering with educational comic specialists Dekko Comics and artist Fernando Corrales Linares to raise £7,500 through a new Kickstarter campaign to produce and print the full book.Creator of The Remarkablz, Katy Alexander, said:“I am in awe of Dr Katsuko Saruhashi's scientific discoveries, incredible life and positive impact on our world. Radioactive Fallout reimagines Katsuko’s life as a young girl, how she gains her superpowers and comes to join The Remarkablz as one of our science superheroes. I'm excited about blending her real-life story with imagined superhero adventures. The comic book creates an engaging educational tool for parents and teachers wanting to share the huge achievements of diverse scientists, engineers and inventors who have shaped the world in which we live. Our Kickstarter campaign will help us to produce and print an amazing 24-page comic book full of fun and fast-paced adventure for young readers, interweaving Katsuko’s real-story with superhero fantasy.”The Kickstarter campaign will reward supporters with copies of Radioactive Fallout and more depending on their level of support, including science superhero posters, stickers, colouring sheets, The Remarkablz: Black Hole card game and The Remarkablz: Top Quarkz card game.Through her games and books, Katy Alexander explores the importance of diversity in science through the power of storytelling and play. “I created The Remarkablz to inspire the next generation of science superheroes. Positive and diverse role models shape attitudes, ignite aspirations and transform lives. When my daughter was three, she only ever saw depictions of male astronauts and questioned whether she, as a girl, could go to space. As a person with dyslexia, I grew up with no dyslexic role models, and the impact this had on the choices I made and how I saw my place in the world was enormous. I didn't want the same for her. I developed The Remarkablz to find role models that my daughter, nieces and nephews could relate to. The people who create rockets, travel through space, discover comets, stop above-ground nuclear testing, are - to me - superhuman, so I turned them into actual superheroes where their real-life superpowers can be celebrated.”The Kickstarter campaign for Radioactive Fallout: Katsuko’s Story is live now for supporters to get behind: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/katy-alexander/radioactive-falloutWebsite<a...

206: Independent Thinking with Ian Gilbert

206: Independent Thinking with Ian Gilbert

Mark Taylor chats to Ian Gilbert, a patron of National Association for Primary Education.Since founding Independent Thinking in 1994, Ian has built a global reputation as an educational thinker, innovator, entrepreneur, speaker and award-winning editor and writer. He was listed by the IB magazine as one of their top 15 ‘educational visionaries’.Never happier than when he is making children’s brains hurt, he has a unique first-hand perspective on the world of education having lived and worked in schools and universities in the UK, the Middle East, South America and Asia.He is now sharing his time between Rotterdam, where his wife is an international school principal, and their home in the middle of nowhere deep in West Wales. He wasn’t always interested in exotic foreign travel and meeting interesting people from different countries, as he started off his educational career teaching French in Northampton. He didn’t really want to be a French teacher and, while you would think not wanting to teach French to people who didn’t want to learn it might be a match made in heaven, it was only ever really a stepping stone. His main ambition was to work with young people in the areas that most fascinated him then and in which he has become such an important figure today – thinking, learning, motivation, creativity and helping all members of the school community be the best they can be.Through his many books including the ever-popular Thunks collection, his ongoing classroom work with children and young people, his keynotes and workshops at conferences around the world and his continuous work with teachers and leaders in schools, Ian has shown a whole generation of educators that there is always another way.Following a chance meeting in the staff room, Ian was encouraged to set up Independent Thinking in 1994 and, since then, has built up a unique educational organisation that acts as a platform for some of the UK’s leading innovative educators and school leaders as well as serving as a ‘lighthouse’ for so many practitioners who might otherwise fall prey to the idea that silence is respect, obedience is behaviour, grades measure education and teaching and learning are the same thing.Websitewww.independentthinking.co.ukSocial Media Information@ITLWorldwide on Twitterindependentthinkingworldwide on InstagramYou can listen to all NAPE podcasts on their website nape.org.uk/nape-podcast or any podcast platform. 205: Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize

Maddy Kavanagh, Education and Skills Programme Manager at Nesta Challenges and Gordon Taylor, a STEM technician at Walton Priory Middle School are talking to me about the The Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize. The Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize, delivered by Nesta Challenges, calls on young bright minds to put their passion for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) to the test, to create and develop technological innovations to help solve some of the biggest issues of our time.Young people aged 11-16 are encouraged to apply their creativity and ingenuity in four key areas: supporting people living independently in old age, helping people lead healthier lives, tackling climate change and pollution, and helping people stay better connected. Now in its fourth year, and supported by Amazon for the first time, the Longitude Explorer Prize pairs classroom STEM learning with valuable entrepreneurial skills to help young innovators make their great ideas a reality. Reading and writing are foundational skills, and in our digital world, coding is too.But coding can be intimidating to learn. What is code? Where do you even start? In Read Write Code, Jeremy Keeshin demystifies the world of computers, starting at the beginning to explain the basic building blocks of today’s tech: programming, the internet, data, apps, the cloud, cybersecurity, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and more.Complex concepts are explained in friendly and engaging ways, with interactive examples and practical tips. 199: Can you hear me now? with Suzanne DeMallie

Suzanne DeMallie has been striving to make a difference in education since 2005. Her book Can You Hear Me Now? walks parents and teachers through everything they need to know to make a difference in their local district and beyond, from the most basic questions they should be asking to the most effective steps they can take to make their voices heard. As a parent, Suzanne DeMallie fought a nationwide battle against bureaucracy for the simple, common sense idea that children in the back of a classroom should be able to hear their teacher.Suzanne taught for seven years in the Baltimore County Public Schools system. Research into her own son’s learning difficulties led her to author the Classroom Auditory Learning Issues resolution, adopted by the National PTA in July 2007. Her work has appeared in Our Children Magazine, T.H.E. Journal, Towson Times, and The Baltimore Sun.She has presented at the National School Boards Association’s Annual Convention; to national, state, and local PTA groups, and to politicians. 196: Broad and balanced curriculum Q&A with Dr. Tony Eaude

Towards a balanced and broadly-based curriculum was the theme of the National Association for Primary Education conference in March 2021. The keynote lecture was given by Dr. Tony Eaude. This is a follow up Q&A that I hosted and taken from a subsequent Facebook live event. NAPE has been a long term supporter of the Education on Fire podcast and I have been involved with the association for over 5 years, the last 18 months as vice chair. I thought this discussion was very insightful and wanted to give you the opportunity to hear it.The original full lecture can be found on the NAPE YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/YI_tiHvKxOkTony suggested four main arguments for a balanced and broadly-based primary curriculum:that the law states that schools must offer this (as it does) and that Ofsted expect this (at least from 7 years old);one based on how children create coherent, robust and flexible identities, enhancing their well-being and founded on a sense of agency;one based on a conception of democratic citizenship in which children are increasingly enabled to deal with complex ideas right from the start; anda social justice one that such a curriculum will open up opportunities from which many children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, will otherwise be excluded.Questions & comments from conference delegatesRetired HeadteacherDr Eaude’s argument for a balanced and broadly based curriculum is compelling. Moving forwards, is it possible for schools to work with the current National Curriculum Framework to achieve this? Do Academies, rather than Local Authority schools, have the most potential and freedom to develop such curriculum experiences?Where (in England) is curriculum innovation to be found at present? What is the National Association of Primary Education’s role in this argument? As a student in my final year of an undergraduate course, I am currently working on an assignment about my own educational philosophy which very much aligns with Dr. Eaude’s Schiller speech. Embarking into my NQT year in September I know the best way to change this is starting in my own classroom. However big questions arise with that:What can I do beyond that? If there is not enough support or like-minded colleagues,How can I reach out to ensure this way of teaching the curriculum is opened up on to all the children in the community?Where can I find more support? For more information about Dr. Tony Eaude please visit his website https://edperspectives.org.uk/More information about NAPE is available at https://nape.org.uk/To find out more about Christian Schiller HMI please click on the link belowhttps://nape.org.uk/publicationsThe Schiller Book, published by NAPE, ‘In His Own Words’, can be purchased for only £5.The full lecture can be found on the NAPE YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/YI_tiHvKxOk

190: Junior Authors Program with Susie Harder

Susie Harder, M.A., CCC-SLP is an experienced clinician who devotes much of her passion to working with children who stutter. She works in private practice and the school setting to help support children and provides workshops and consulting-based support to school districts across California. She recently created the Junior Authors Program (a revolutionary literacy-based platform).Susie has a history of designing and building successful programs. During her time in Fresno Unified School District (2011-2015), Susie designed and piloted a framework for 100 elementary schools, where specialty services successfully reduced student speech therapy time up to 5 years. Most recently (2020), when the Central California Creek Fire started and children from her hometown lost their homes, Susie started brainstorming how to best support these kids. When she couldn’t find enough resources, she simply decided to create it. Within a week, she had written a children’s book themed around what these kids had just experienced, found an editor, taken a course on children’s books, and started looking internationally to find the best illustrator. Her child- development skills guided her toward sharing this inspirational knowledge with kids. Thus, she created a unique platform to reinvent how children connect with literacy and books. Through the Junior Authors Program, children across the world vote to decide characters, setting, and story details of a book as it’s being created. 189: We Are Next - Community Campaign with Mark White

At the start of 2020, Your Town launched a community campaign called We Are Next, a national campaign to get the next generation moving and more connected with health, fitness and their community. We Are Next have reached over 1600 kids across 10 schools, in two different towns in Hertfordshire. The original idea was to visit a further 90 schools reaching over 4000 kids across the UK; the restrictions in place due to COVID-19 have resulted in We Are Next adapting their original plan.We Are Next and The Ocado Foundation have created a Key Stage 2 lesson plan, activities and tools, which are all available to download online for FREE. The aim is to help educate children about the importance of health, wellbeing and exercise and the role that community plays in all three. They delved into some stats around fitness, health and wellness and discovered that less than 25% of children aged 9-11 are active for 60 mins a day, that only 1 in 12 young people eat 5 portions of fruit/veg a day and that 1 in 10 young people sometimes feel lonely.Knowing that teachers and parents alike, face challenges every day educating and raising the next generation to be healthy, happy and valuable members of their local community. Providing these resources for free, to use in primary schools or at home, they hope will encourage children to think about where they are from, their local town and its importance.2020 has been a difficult year and the significance of community has been emphasised, more so than ever. We Are Next and The Ocado Foundation are passionate about the next generation and creating opportunities for them. Despite adapting their strategy, their mission remains the same; to ensure children feel inspired and better connected to where they live and the communities they are from.To download the FREE lesson plan and worksheets, visit www.wearenext.ukInstagram: @yourtownukTwitter: @yourtownFacebook: @yourtowncicIf you would like to support the Education on Fire GoFundMe campaign to create a valuable resource for our children based on the wisdom of our inspiring guests please click below.https://uk.gofundme.com/f/education-on-fire-book-fundraiserShow SponsorThe National Association for Primary Education has an online conference on 8th March 2021 entitled:TOWARDS A BALANCED AND BROADLY-BASED CURRICULUMVirtual Conference – Monday 8th March 2021, 4.15pm-6.45pmThe Conference, embracing a theme which has always been central to debate about children’s entitlements, has been highlighted by OfSTED as critical in curriculum development and its central importance has been further accentuated by the pressures under which primary schools are working in the post-lockdown phase as they prioritise what is perceived as essential in educational recovery. The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on children’s education may be perceived as a justification for narrowing the curriculum at the expense of the arts and the humanities, but this conference will explore the case for preserving young children’s entitlement to as rich and diverse a curriculum as possible.
