The space between where you are now and where you want to be can feel daunting and lonely. This podcast is the remedy to comparison and feeling like everyone else has it figured out but you.
91. Danielle x Carey Anderson: performing, perfectionism, and falling flat on your face
There’s still time for you to join me on November 15th from 6-7:30pm EST for the Overachiever Spiral Workshop. Click the link for details and to register. Meet Carey Anderson, a former Broadway performer turned therapist. Carey and I sit down to talk about what it looks like to put yourself out there and get rejected - over and over and over again. What we both learned from our time in the performing arts, and what led to making the career leap to psychotherapy. What I love about this episode is how well it demonstrates that though the details of our life are so diverse, the things we want out of life are the same. We want our life to have meaning, we want to be of value to others, we want to know we matter. Carey and I explore how we help our clients in these areas, and how we navigate them ourselves. 89. Happiness comes from acheivement, right?
Today, I want to talk about taking a step back and listening to your emotions, but what does it mean exactly? Examples would look like: Feeling irritable or overly tired Having some form of difficulty in your everyday routine Unclear on why you are feeling a certain way More often than not, we can determine what is contributing to our changes in mood. However, there are times when it’s hard to pinpoint the root cause of your distress, and that’s when our emotions are trying to tell us something. In this episode, I want to talk about my self-reflection and how I’m finally at a place where I can feel when something is off. Not just conceptually, but knowing that my emotions are information and a key component to understanding myself and finding more peace and joy. I’m also going to talk about the realization that I had and how it slowly became clearer during maternity leave and while giving birth. Don’t worry; we’re not going to be talking about birth and babies. But we are going to be talking about what I like to call the “messy middle” To do that, I want to walk you through my realization and how I was able to create space to question it, get curious and look at it from different angles, and how that led to my the result. Hopefully, by listening to this, you may be able to get a feeling of your own that you want to get curious about, and hopefully, this can be beneficial to wherever you are in your emotional health and emotional wellness journey. 88. Force'n it. A solocast.
Welcome back!!! It feels so good to be back in front of the microphone and talking with you all again. Many of you know that I have been on maternity leave for the last few months. Once a week, maybe even more than that, I started thinking about making the transition and getting back into work and coming off of maternity leave, which is crazy because maternity leave suggests that I was not working and taking the time to do what exactly? Now, we all know what maternity leave looks like, of course. However, coming out of this so-called “maternity leave” and stepping back into work, I’m scratching my head because I’m working but also still “mothering,” right? I’m still wrapping my head around how everything in life has changed, from parenthood to motherhood, but I’m still the same person. That’s why I’m excited to be back because this space that I’ve created allowed me to express my curiosity, feelings, and every aspect of my life that is too confusing to deal with alone. The beautiful part about this conversation that we will have today is that you don’t have to do it alone, and the best things in life are shared. And if you’re listening to today’s episode, you are probably trying to figure things out just like the rest of us cause Lord knows that I'm still trying to figure it out myself. 87. We're Back! New Episodes coming October 4th!
Hi friends! Mark your calendars - October 4th 2021 - Bangs is back! It feels like it's been so long. Making a human, going on maternity leave, and doing life with this new little person has been an adjustment (to say the least). Since March 29th, 2021 (the date episode 86 was released) a lot has changed, but one thing has stayed the same - I love this podcast and couldn't freaking wait to get back to making it... Okay! That was really two things, but you knew what I meant. Life is messy and wonderful. All I want to devote my precious (and limited) time to is learning how to make it even more wonderful. So, how do we do that? Talk about it. All the things. The messy, confusing, scary, wonderful, hopeful things. Sharing stories, sharing experiences, learning from each other, making a million mistakes and laughing along the way. Working as a therapist, being in my own therapy, and listening to women (men and couples) share their hearts with me has put me in a unique position where I'm taking a lot of information in. This podcast is a special container where I get to pour some of that information out. Together, I truly believe we can create joy, connection, and community. Who doesn't need more of that? If you have questions, comments, or ideas for future episodes, let me hear from you! The best things in life are shared. If you need additional support, and don't know where to start, I have some resources linked for you below. Thank you for being here, and I can't wait to continue the conversation with you. 86. Changing our relationship with change - Pt. 4. A solocast.
This stage, I lovingly call - > Embrace the suck. The truth is, change is hard. Even when we know it's good for us and ESPECIALLY when it's something we really really want. The greater our desire: ✔️The higher the stakes ✔️The more we have to lose ✔️The more vulnerable we feel if it doesn't work out "Embracing the suck" doesn't mean that every step along the way will be a painful one. What it means is that even when it's hard, even when you doubt yourself -> you can move forward anyway. Waiting to feel comfortable before you start may mean you're waiting a loooooooong time. Don't wait. You're worth it. And what you desire most may just be on the other side of this last step! Enjoy! 83. Changing our relationship with change - Pt. 1
What ACTUALLY leads to change? It's usually one of two things: Discomfort or Desire "I'm in pain, and I want out." "I'm frustrated, and I want to feel better." "I'm bored, and I want to feel inspired." Knowing what the catalyst is for you can be powerful exercise AND can help you stay on track. When we're ready for change there are 3 things we often feel, say, or do: We feel - Frustrated, Tired, Anxious We say - "Ugh!", "This has to stop.", "This sucks!" We do - Hit snooze, avoid, procrastinate Join me for the next 4 weeks as we explore our relationship with change, and hopefully learn to love it. Enjoy! 81. What your desire could be telling you - a solocast
What's your desire telling you? When I'm working with clients, I like to say that our desire is always calling us to reach for more, and is usually the step BEFORE the step. For example: * We feel hunger before we reach for a snack. * We feel thirst before we reach for a glass of water. * We feel DESIRE before we: ✔️Set a goal. ✔️Make a plan. ✔️Start to change. In this week's solocast, I explore desire and all the ways it could be letting you know you're ready for more. Enjoy! 80. Jealousy, and what it means for you - a solocast
Jealousy is often seen as a negative emotion. And let's be honest, it doesn't feel that great when we experience it. BUT, what does it look like if we approach our jealousy with a little compassionate curiosity? In my experience, jealousy is calling our attention to deeper desire that we may not be fully aware we have. When we're riding the jealousy train, we might find ourselves falling into the following rabbit holes: Comparison Criticism Complaining Here's 3 things jealousy it might be telling you. ->There's something here I want for myself. ->I need more of this in my life. ->I'm really ready to make this change. 79. Going ALL in & Living a Life You Deserve | Danielle x Kate Kennett
Meet Kate Kennett - coach, mother, teacher, friend, and fellow whale lover. She's worn a lot of hats in her professional life, but one of things I love most about her story, and this interview, is how she's approached change head-on and with humility. Her experiences have taught her the value in saying "Yes" - even when you don't feel ready, and how to learn from every mistake. More importantly, she wants to help you do the same. One of my favorite takeaways from this episode - “Ask yourself why, until there’s no more why left.” Sit back, relax, and get ready for some BIG belly laughs. Enjoy! 76. Are we getting "healthy" or getting smaller? Danielle X Erica Ballard
The condition of our physical body's is closely connected to our mental health, and the stress of 2020 has taken a toll. Before you set your New Years resolutions, I'd HIGHLY encourage you to take the time to listen to my conversation with nutritionist, coach, and founder of Erica Ballard Health - Erica Ballard. In this episode we explore why success and sustainability are so connected to how you feel on the way to accomplishing your goals. This is a no BS conversation about what's often not explored when women talk about "getting healthy" or "getting in shape"... getting smaller. We talk about what health looks like from all shapes and sizes, and how not being honest with ourselves about what we're really looking for can lead to anxiety and self-sabotage. One of my favorite takeaways from our conversation was this, "If you're not enjoying the process of getting healthy, you're not going to maintain the results." Programs or methods that aren't fun along the way WON'T be fun to continue! So simple, and so true. The same can be said for ANY goal, intention, or resolution. 74. Best Bang moments Podcast
This episode is very near and dear to my heart. It's the first highlight reel for the show! I can remember so clearly how terrified I was. Sitting down with Jen Edds, and telling her👇🏻 "I think maybe I might want to possibly start a podcast...(trails off into nervous mumbles and drools 🤤 slightly)" I remember telling myself things like: •Learning the technology is too hard, too time consuming and expensive. •I don't have anything to say. •There are already enough better, more qualified people, having the conversations I was interested in having. Almost 2 years later, buckets of stress sweat💦 and A LOT of learning I made a thing! I made a beautiful thing that I'm proud of and that - I. LOVE. TO. MAKE. A podcast called Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs. ✨75 episodes in ✨Over 10,000 downloads ✨In 14 countries ✨100,000 laughs later I can't wait to keep connecting with you. Thank you for your time & your attention. Both are invaluable and irreplaceable. I created an episode that includes some of my favorite Don’t Cut Your Own Bang moments. She also shares some of the lessons she's learned along the way in business and in life. "Be where you are." 71. Danielle x Alesia Galati from Two Sisters & a Cult
Professional podcast manager and co-host of Two Sisters and a Cult, Alesia Galati and I explore questions like: How do I know what are my original thoughts vs my training? What do I really want my life to look like? What does it mean when the people our lives don’t agree? We relate on a shared sentiment of being in our mid 20’s, looking around at our lives and asking, “Who’s life am I really living?” We also explore the impact of someone you admire confirming the worst fear you have about yourself and how this affects behavior, “This must be true. It’s the thing I’ve been afraid to admit to myself and they see it too.” We also talk about the differences between being led to follow our own instincts vs following someone else’s. Similarities between how cult leaders lead and current coaching and marketing strategies. The core lesson we come back to over and over again - at the end of the day the person who’s trust you must keep is your own. Enjoy! 69. Authenticity, Allowing & Advocacy: Danielle x Teresa Sabatine
What does it mean to be honest with ourselves, others, and still hold space for compassion? What does it look like to disagree, and not lose ourselves in the process? How can we make a positive/meaningful impact on the world, while still allowing people to be who they are? These are BIG questions, which is why I needed to sit down with a thought leader who's got some BIG insights - leadership coach Teresa Sabatine. 68. Jen Edds Podcast re release
We're bringing it back from the Don't Cut Your Own Bangs archive - Ep. 12 with Jen Edds. Since we're focusing on values this week, I thought it’d be the perfect time to feature a friend of the podcast who embodies quality, character, and lives in alignment with their values. Jen is driven to help other podcasters succeed. I remember every time I got scared to press record 🎤 or how to work with new software, she'd always bring me back to 👇🏻 ✅”Why are you doing a podcast?" ✅”Why is this important to you?" ✅”That's what matters and the rest will work itself out." When I would get caught up in the trappings of a clever idea or new element I wanted to add to the show, she'd gently ask, "How will this add value to your listener? Is this something they're going to care about?" She takes the art of communication seriously, without taking herself too seriously. AND she's created a course to help other podcasters like me get over their fear and get their message out in the world. Connect with Jen HERE. Enjoy! 67. Connection - the reason we communicate
Ahhhh connection. The heartbeat of relationships and the reason we communicate. Coming out of a two week communication challenge felt like the perfect time to introduce this topic for one VERY important reason. -> We are BURNT OUT. Maybe today you're having a good day, maybe you're not. Either way, it's ok, you're not alone, and I get it. What I know for sure is what I feel, and what I'm being told. And that's a weekly mix of tired, weary, anxious, burnout, isolated, and tense. In this podcast I explore some of the language we use when we're close to burnout and how reconnecting with ourselves, others, and our purpose can bring healing and relief. Enjoy! 63. The Real Feels - a solo cast
All feelings are created equal and deserve a seat at the table. BUT are feelings all communicated equally? Eh…. Not so much. Introducing “I feel” vs. “I feel like” What’s the difference? “I feel” -> requires awareness, acknowledgement, and vulnerability. “I feel like” -> is an opportunity to continue telling you why I’m upset & what you’ve done wrong, while trying to sounding polite. Have you ever fallen into this trap? I have! It’s easy to do. Our feelings provide powerful insights into our lives. Think of yourself as an emotional scientist collecting data on your life. You want to gather and share the most accurate findings possible. Right? In this podcast I explore three of my favorite ways to get clear and communicate in a way that best serves you and those around you. Enjoy! Get weekly doses of encouragement. 59. Getting to the Truth: a solocast
Have you ever had an interaction with someone, walked away feeling one way, only to find out the other person seemed to have a completely different conversation? I see situations like this escalate when people start to blend facts with feelings, or present their feelings as factual. Some core truths you'll hear in this episode ⬇️ 1. If you're feeling an emotion that emotion is true for you 2. Not everyone needs to agree with your perspective for it to be true 3. There are Truths with a capital 'T' - aka facts that are indisputable like gravity 4. There are relative truths - like time slowing down when you're bored 5. The emotional responses you have to the experiences of your life are true, even if someone else's experience was different.

58. Danielle X Gary Noesner: an FBI negotiators take on connection, communication, and trust
Meet Gary Noesner - author, instructor, investigator, and FBI negotiator. Gary served as the lead hostage negotiator during the first 25 days of the 51 day siege in Waco TX. His book Stalling for Time, My life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator became the framework with the Netflix mini-series WACO. In his words, "I've talked about WACO more in the past couple months than in my entire career, but if you don't know history you're destined to repeat it." We explore what it feels like to be negotiating relationships from every angle in crisis situations, and how the lessons from these experiences can apply to everyday life. There were so many great parts of this conversation, but my favorite takeaway is this: The best answer you can give is the most truthful - even if it's, "I don't know." 52. How do you know when you're on the path to healing?
Today's episode is all about healing. Specifically as it relates to - emotional healing emotional recovery emotional work About a week ago a client that I'd been working with for about 5 months asked me, "How do you know when you're done?" We explored the question for a little while, and what became clear was that she wanted to know - "...when I've healed what I need to heal, and how do I really know when I've made progress?" The short answer is that the less activated a painful emotion is in you - anger, grief, worry, sadness, frustration, etc. - indicates how healed a memory, experience, or relationship is within you. I this episode I explore the language we use to identify where healing work is needed. For example - Feeling activated vs Triggered I also dig into a recent experience in my life where I had some healing work to do and how I navigated that process. 49. Danielle x Kris Taylor - navigating challenges & creating opportunity
In 2014, Kris Taylor published her first book - The Leader's Guide to Turbulent Times. She had no way of knowing just how right she'd be about "turbulent times", and 6 years later how much we'd all benefit from her knowledge. Kris Taylor is a speaker, author, educator and founder of Evergreen Leadership. I first met Kris at a workshop she was leading along side of fellow coaches Caroline Dowd-Higgins, and my dear friend and former Don't Cut Your Own Bangs guest Lindsay Boccardo. It was at this workshop that I first admitted - out loud - that I wanted to make a podcast. The confidence and clarity to go from having an idea to making it a reality came as a direct result from Kris and this workshop. This was a wonderful full-circle moment for me. Kris was as gracious and generous in this interview as she was the first time I met her. I know you're going to love her too. Enjoy! 46. The journey & unlocking limitless Joy
In today's solocast I explore how a 3yr old Facebook memory helped me access joy and appreciation for myself. May 14th, 2017 I graduated with my masters degree. May 15th, 2017 I started my first day of work as a therapist in private practice. I remember seeing that memory and feeling all at once - "Oh my God. It's only been 3yrs?" And also - "Oh my God. It's ONLY been 3yrs!" I started thinking about joy. More specifically, what limits joy? When we want something in our lives so deeply, it can become difficult to hold space for both the desire of a dream coming true and the distance between where we are now and where we want to be. This can look like: Wanting a meaningful career Wanting a healthy relationship Wanting to start a family Disappointment, frustration, loneliness, and grief can feel like waves crashing onto shore that wash you out to sea. What if the absence of joy is cursing the waves, and joy itself is the recognition of learning to ride them? Here's the link to a podcast I reference being interviewed on -> Career Foresight: Future of work for creative professionals. I also reference a miscarriage I experienced last year. Not wanting to detail the experience in this episode, I've linked it for you -> A Miscarriage: Shock, loss, grief, and learning.

Today we're talking about mediation. Have you ever been so stressed that you didn't realize there was a problem until you took a deep breath and felt a tingling sensation throughout your body? This is usually what happens: We experience or witness a stressful event We feel tense, anxious, or overwhelmed Our breathing becomes shallow and constricted. When this happens it becomes harder to focus, be present, and aware. In extreme cases this can lead to panic attacks. This solocast explores what mediation is (and what it isn't), how it's been beneficial for me personally, and why it might be the best thing to introduce for you overall health and wellbeing.
