Debate This!
If Kirby swallowed a boss from Metal Gear Solid, what absolutely bonkers power would he obtain? Which of the X-Men would be the biggest bummer of a roommate? Is King Bob-Omb’s rule officially recognized by the Mushroom Kingdom or is Bob-Omb Battlefield a sovereign nation? Debate This! asks the kind of bold and heroic questions about your favorite video games and comics that no other podcast would dare ask. Although, it’s probably because other people have better things to do than argue which color of Yoshi is the best color of Yoshi. In this show, no one is right, but someone is definitely wrong.

Ep. 158: Paul for the Paul God

At the time of this episode's release, we're only a few weeks removed from the Mike Tyson v Jake Paul boxing match. Millions of users tried to watch this fight on Netflix, but most were thwarted by shoddy broadcast connections. Whether folks watched the fight live or not, almost all were dissapointed with the outcome. This bout with a 31-year age gap left a lot to be desired, and we here at DT!HQ are going to give the people what they desire. With that goal in mind, we've set out today to determine "which video game character would be the best to fight Jake Paul?" Todd suggests we fight fire with fire and billionaire with billionaire. Andrew suggests we make everyone in the room uncomfortable. Kyle suggests the void. Ep. 157: Whole Hog for the Holidays

We're in the back half of November and that puts us squarely in "The Holidays." There's family, there's friendship, there's food, there's gifts, and there's the inevitable awkward conversation you'll have introducing your family to your new partner. We here at DT!HQ sympathize with those of you bringing a new relationship home this holiday season. To help acclimate you to this inevitable confrontation, we're putting on our pretend hats and theorizing over potential family dinner nightmare scenarios. So grab a napkin and pass the potatoes because this week we're debating "Who is the worst DC Comics character to bring home for the holidays?" Kyle is really stretching the definition of "manic pixie dream girl" this week. Andrew is going to make you uncomfortable and give your grandma a heart attack this week. Also this week, Matt gives his thoughts on child rearing. The title of this week's episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community! Ep. 156: Big Trouble in Little Heistland (ft. Eric Silver)

"Remember, remember, the 5th of November," or whatever that guy in the mask said. On account of today being a relatively important day in world history, we decided to record an episode relatively based on world history! That little poem at the beginning of the paragraph was made famous by Alan Moore's V for Vendetta, a graphic novel based on a historical event. With that in mind, we're on a mission to write our own graphic novels! Specifically, we're looking for the best historical event to put to illustrated print. Matt is getting surprisingly heady with his answer. Andrew is getting surprisingly culty with his answer. And we decided to bring in a guest who actually knows history, so Eric Silver is getting surprisingly heisty with his answer. FLAVOR TEXT: Borderlands

Vault Hunters, Space Capitalism, and eldritch horrors locked behind arcane gates? It's cute that you all think you're the heroes of this little adventure, but you're not. Welcome to Pandora, kiddos. That's right, we're diving exploding gun-first into the looter shooter that built the genre all thanks to our wonderful support of Butt Thwomp Nation member, Sharkbait! It's deep lore, character explanations, and a life lesson about how there's probably a reason why an ancient civilization sacrificed their entire society to lock a something called "The Destroyer" behind a gate, so maybe you don't open that gate, yeah? Strap in, choose a vault hunter, decide on a skill tree specialization, change your mind and respec when it doesn't work out well, and get ready to say the word "fustercluck" at least once! Episode 150!! Can you believe it?? We sure can't!! To celebrate this momentous occasion, we present an episode focused on the only significant use of the number 150, Pokemon. Longtime listeners may be familiar with our previous attempts to create themed Pokemon gyms and that's ok because this time is different. Happy July everyone! The sun is shining, the tank is clean, and it's officially backyard barbeque season! Now we've hosted a few BBQs at DT!HQ, and every year the guest list seems to expand. This year, we've offered everyone a +1, as long as that +1 goes explicitly to a comic book villain. That leaves us with only one question, "What super villain would make the best cookout guest?" The "Silly Sixties" are on everyone's mind this week as Andrew introduces us all to the sandiest man. Kyle and his guest are bringing the "chill, rich guy vibes" to the party. Ep. 144: Cozy Regular Dude Type Folks

The month of May is synonymous with flowers and sunny weather. Birds are chirping, buds are blooming and farming sim fans are hunting for this year's way to enjoy the outdoors without leaving the indoors. Now we're not talking about just farming sims, we're setting our sights on the whole "cozy game" genre. The execs have asked us to head to the field of video games and harvest some new cozy games. Today we're tackling the questions, "What not cozy game should be remade but cozy?" Kyle's pitch is about as radical as a cozy game can be. Andrew's pitch is about as pun-filled as a cozy game can be. Matt's answer is pretty much just Five Nights at Freddy's. Ep. 143: What're Ya Droppin'? (ft. Greg Schulz)

Profits are down! Why are profits down? Who knows, but they're down everywhere! Profits are so down that Big Capitalism has come running to us here at DT!HQ to get profits back up! How are we going to get profits back up? With card battlers of course! Todd gives the people what they want and completes a beloved trilogy. Matt is making the sickest, raddest card battler you've ever seen. If you understand Andrew's answer, hey, this episode is for you. Ep. 142: Put the E Back in Wii Sports (LIVE! at Midwest Gaming Classic)

On the day of our non-denominational Lord, April 7th, 2024, 4 nerds were given a platform for a second time. A platform, not just on the internet, but in a real life place in front of real life people at the Midwestern Gaming Classic in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Those 4 nerds dared to ask a dangerous question, "What sport should be added to Wii Sports?" This raucous debate will really have you questioning if you know what a sport is. Andrew is pushing for esports in video games. Kyle is defending an American pastime. Todd is combining two things you didn't know could be combined. Ep. 141: Do You Think The Danger Room Is Mad At Me?

Hoo boy those new X-Men ['97] sure are competent superheroes and also universally sexy. Pretty much the opposite of that are the 3 of us dweebs standing in the shadows who all somehow also made the cut and got accepted into Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters despite having superpowers or eshewing raw bisexual energy. Matt shows his super-expertise with common household appliances, Andrew illustrates his super-ability to read a room, and Todd slip-slides around via his super-undiagnosed hyperhidrosis. Ep. 140: Rage Bait 64 (ft. John Warren)

It's Christmas of 1996 and you've just unwrapped the hottest new home gaming console, the Nintendo 64. You're about to be immersed into a game more realistic than your brain can even fathom. Except it's not 1996, it's 2024 and games look more like real life than real life does. Wouldn't it be a wild thought experiment to adapt a game made in 2024 to 1996's N64? Wouldn't it? Fair warning, if you've played a particular game series, Andrew is going to make you furious. Kyle is here to make one 25th of a game. Todd is going to talk a lot about horses. Because none of those things sounded great, we also invited former Fanbyte Head of Media and current cohost of If You’re Driving Close Your Eyes and cofounder of Glydr, John Warren! FLAVOR TEXT: Power Rangers

Does it smell like Teen Spirit in here or is that just me? While we're not talking about Nirvana today, we are talking about one of the other biggest figures of the 90s, Power Rangers. It's hard to believe it's been 30 years since we were first introduced to the color-coded teenagers with attitude. Now with 30 seasons and 4 feature length films under their belt, we're going to look under the spandex as to how exactly Haim Saban propped up this franchise for three decades. Ep. 139: By the Power of Go Fast

How much do you know about the phrase "public domain?" Follow up question, how much do you want to know about the phrase "public domain?" Today we're doing something just plain silly. Today we're making Sonic the Hedgehog games out of public domain novels. Believe it or not, they've already made two of them. Todd's idea led to a lot less puns than it could have. Kyle's idea revolves around everyone's favorite public domain detective. Matt's idea has a villain that really pushes the limits of stupidity. I'm just going to say this up front: 138 = 69 x 2. With that out in the open, it should be no surprise to you that today's episode is another "What game would make the best dating sim" episode. If you don't want to hear the DT! hosts discuss BDSM, maybe skip this one. (Looking at you, Matt's Mom.) Kyle is doing his best to reinvent the most lackluster release of 2024 so far. Ep. 137: Dude, What's My Phase

Did you know there's only one official Marvel Cinematic Universe slated for a 2024 release? That number jumps to three if you include the Sony Venom-Verse movies, but the once mighty MCU is down to a single cinematic release this year. Whether you've kept up with Phases 4 and 5 or not, you're probably aware that Marvel Studios seems to lack direction. Somewhere between a glut of Disney+ content and the conviction of their planned franchise villain, Kevin Feige et al. seem to have lost their way. That's why the Marvel Team has turned to us here at DT!HQ to help determine: What should be the new direction for the MCU? Todd is going to tell you about the Dark Avengers and you're going to like it. Kyle is going to tell you about House of M and you're going to like it. Andrew's going to tell you about Separation Anxiety and you're going to hate it. Ep. 136: Dice Wars: Revenge of the Six

It's season premiere episode time, nerds! And, as this is the premiere of Season 7, we've decided to leave everything related to the number 6 in the past. That might not seem like much, but it means that we're throwing away all the 6-sided dice in the world. You read that correctly, all the d6s are going away forever and we here at DT!HQ are in charge of replacing them. Join us as we kick off DT! Season 7 and decide "Which dice is the best dice?" Kyle makes a shockingly weak pitch for the d10. Todd makes a shockingly strong pitch for the d4. Matt makes a shocking pitch. Who will stand victorious amongst the battlefields of the Dice Wars? Happy Winter Season of Non-Denominational Holiday Celebration™ to all of you who celebrate non-denominationally! Happy Tuesday™ to those of you who don't! It's time for our final debate of the year and our annual shitty peripheral gift exchange! Unfortunately, DT!HQ is a little short on budget this year, so we decided to exchange gifts with the local pawn shop as opposed to each other. Ep. 134: Grumpy Matt's Worst Christmas Ever

The weather outside is getting frightful, but the fire is getting oh so delightful...Or that's how these show notes would have started if we actually recorded a holiday episode. Instead, we recorded an episode about Made-For-TV-Movies and what it would be like if we made those into video games. Just to be clear, no one picked the Made-For-TV-Movie you wanted them to. Nope, not even that one. Kyle is created the worst (best?) ever modern farming sim. Andrew wrote a script. Ep. 133: Solve for XP

Two and a half years ago, we created a bit in which Todd, Kyle and Matt act as Andrew's collective dads in a Final Fantasy world. Then, a year and a half ago, we revisited this concept a second time. WELL, everyone knows you can't have a trilogy without a third entry. So today we welcome back Sad Dad, Bad Dad and Rad Dad for another Final Fantasy episode! This time we're asking the age old questions, which Final Fantasy location would be the best place to retire? Matt introduces the family to his entrepreneurial dreams. Ep. 132: An Exercise in Practicing Restraint

You know what? It's been a minute since the last time we attempted to save the DC Cinematic Universe. That said, it's only been about three weeks since the last time we "made a series like Disney Plus's Loki." Well, for some reason, we've decided to recapture both of the aforementioned magics and save the DC Cinematic Universe with a series like Disney Plus's Loki! This week we're asking the simple question, "Which DC Villain should lead their own limited run series that isn't Peacemaker or Harley Quinn?" Andrew threw all of his creativity out the window for this episode and that's all we'll say about that. Matt speaks to the primal urge of man that is de-handling panhandles. Ep. 131: Sovereign States & Monster Dates

Big wheels keep on turning and train whistles keep on blowing! It's Week 3 of Spooktacular Express Season and this week we're reviving those classic, Universal movie monsters. If you're a long time listener to DT!, you've probably heard the phrase "metal dracula" before. Well, for the first time since Season 1, we're back with that same, dumb energy. There's no stops on this week's monster mashup, even though someone should have stopped Andrew before he rewrote Phantom of the Opera as a Glee episode. Todd brings the stickiest answer to the party this week while also making more puns than your body has room for. Matt talks about 70 year old monster lore and no one needed that. FLAVOR TEXT: Emesis Blue

*Insert Matt's attempt at a train whistle here* This train keeps rolling as the Spooktacular Express makes a stop at the spooky machinima station! Join us today as we take a deep dive into the psychological horror known as Emesis Blue - a full 100+ minute movie made using assets from Team Fortress 2 by Fortress Films. Before we can do that, Matt walks us through a bit of history of machinima, explains TF2 to us, does an overview of the roster of characters, and then gives us some of that good, good TF2 deep lore. Special thanks to our patron and treasured member of our Discord, Squirrelmancer, for having this SPOOOOOOKY episode commissioned for their birthday!
