Debate This!
If Kirby swallowed a boss from Metal Gear Solid, what absolutely bonkers power would he obtain? Which of the X-Men would be the biggest bummer of a roommate? Is King Bob-Omb’s rule officially recognized by the Mushroom Kingdom or is Bob-Omb Battlefield a sovereign nation? Debate This! asks the kind of bold and heroic questions about your favorite video games and comics that no other podcast would dare ask. Although, it’s probably because other people have better things to do than argue which color of Yoshi is the best color of Yoshi. In this show, no one is right, but someone is definitely wrong.

Ep. 106: Tucker Carlson Comes From the Mouth

WARNING: Hey, it's me again, telling you for now a third time this season that if this is your first time listening to Debate This!, maybe pick a different one! This episode is a bit. It is a joke. Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events, on our Earth or on 616 is purely coincidental. Join Yucker Carlson as he brings together a group of "influencers" from the across the multiverse to have an intellectual discussion. Today we are here to decide what is truth and what is fiction as we debate the most plausible conspiracy theories within the MCU. The title of this week's episode was NOT selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community because we didn't want to spoil the bit! Ep. 105: Hang 'Em High at Mt. Winkybunion

Is there a cultural touchstone that has been as wildly touched as MTV's "Making the Band?" Probably! But, to continue our season of ripping ideas straight from Music Television, we're pulling a Diddy and crafting the next musical supergroup. Plenty of characters have touched an instrument throughout the history of video games and that's the only requirement for them to be considered for our bands! So grab your headphones, crank your tunes, and jam out with us as we decide which video game characters should form a band! If Dream Theater and Tool are your speed, then Todd's band will be for you. Maybe you prefer the stomping and clapping of Florence + The Machine or Mumford & Sons. If that's your vibe, then you can get tickets to Kyle's band! And then there's Matt's band. Hope you like bits and Bluegrass...   The title of this weeks episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community! Ep. 104: Skimming the Slime Out of the Bottom

"Oh boy, here come those dang investors again. They just won't STOP asking us to pitch them new mashups of old videogames. And it's like their asks are getting more and more hacky and uninspired each time...like, this week they just screamed 'Make NPCs a protagonist!' and then sat there, nearly frozen in place." is what we wrote in our shownotes on May 4th of 2021. Well here we are fourteen months later and hot dog we're going again! This time we ask literally the exact same question as last time, "What NPC deserves to be the protagonist in their own game? Kyle reflects on his Barista-Era and brings an old friend from Animal Crossing to the table. Matt picked one bit this week and boy does he lean into it. Andrew takes us all on a weird, horny adventure and, you guessed it, everyone disliked that.   Recommended reading: Want to listen to our first run at this prompt? FLAVOR TEXT: Gender in Comics

CONTENT WARNING: at 1 hour 38 minutes we discuss sexual assault in comic books. Last year we discussed Social Justice in Comics (Season 4, Episode 21) which covered an entire spectrum of social justice issues that comics sometimes handled alright, but often times missed the mark. This week, thanks to continued support of Patrons like Sharkbait, we're dialing in to focus on Gender in Comics. Join us today as we talk demographics, representation, and the artists behind the characters. If you hadn't become familiarized with the terrible history of "fridging" then you will be after today. Ep. 102: The Best Things in Life are Court Ordered (ft. Justin Jordan)

Wouldn't it be wild if we remade a 2000s-era reality show but made it about comics characters? Wouldn't that be nuts? We definitely haven't done that before! The bit this week is all about giving supervillains a shot at redemption. Andrew learned an awful lot about Bane, Todd is all hopped up on sketchy science, and Kyle brings up police reform as well all groan about it. We're looking to create the best "Supervillain Road to Recovery Special," but we needed some help. Lucky for us, Justin Jordan (@freddiesroomate on TikTok) was free for the evening and he knows way more about comics than us.   Recommended reading: Special thanks to Justin for joining us on Debate This! today! Ep. 101: Mr. Mime Lays Eggs

It's been a few years since the last time we remixed Pokémon gyms, but a particular question from our 100th episode put us back in that mind space. Turns out most of us also have deep trauma related to our own experiences with college internships. Who knew? So this week, we're examining the horrific truths of Pokémon's one-note minibosses by asking, "Which gym leader would host the worst college internship?" Matt explains the internship experience that at least 50% of interns have. Todd proves to us why a Communications degree is worth it. Oh, and Kyle gets sticky. Like, really sticky. Ep. 100: The Real Debate Was the This We Made Along the Way

Well here we are folks, four years later we stand at the precipice of our 100th episode! Whether you've been with us since the beginning or you hopped on the train somewhere along the way, we wouldn't have made it this far without you. To thank you for your support, we've put together this centennial special of insanity. The proverbial rulebook has been thrown out the proverbial window in favor of a brain-meltingly meta episode where we ask each other, "What is the best possible 'Debate This!' episode?" Is it your first time listening to our podcast? Cool! I'm glad you're here and I like you a little more than everyone else. That said, this may not be the best episode to start with because it's pretty self-referential. May I suggest going back a week and checking out Ep 99: Who Puppets the Muppets? Ep. 99: Who Puppets the Muppets?

Have you put chocolate in your peanut butter lately? Well we here at DT!HQ want to make sure you've gotten your regular dose of mashup content! The buzzwords of the week are "Comic Book Movies" and "Muppets." So what comic arc would make the best Muppets movie? Only time and 75 minutes of nostalgic vocal impressions will tell! Wildly enough, Matt has never seen a Muppets, so he opted to go for something familiar. Todd knows the quick way to success is through the toy market and he leans into it. Ep. 98: Wario's Pro-Union Purple Pimpmobile

It sure feels weird to release an episode about summer road trips on a day after it snows, but we don't control the weather! Today we're pivoting DT!HQ into a AAA as we describe some video game-related TripTiks. Our goal: to plan a family vacation. Our rules: it's got to be related to Mario Kart or whatever. This week we ask the question, "Which Mario Kart track would make the best family road trip?" Kyle may or may not be arguing for a fun family romp to the shores (shoals?) of Lake Erie. Andrew pitches a track very reminiscent of 2000s Nickelodeon prize packs. Todd has only really played one Mario Kart game, let's see how it works out for him.   The title of this weeks episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community! Ep. 97: What Dat Dogman Do? (ft. Giovanni Colantonio)

It's Spring in the midwest which means it's time to break out the grill and throw a backyard BBQ on the days it doesn't snow or rain! We love our low 60's cornhole parties here in Ohio, but sometimes an invitation to a good, old-fashioned cookout requires a little more. Sometimes, it requires a plus one. Well today we're bringing a ringer to our barbeques by answering one of the dumbest questions we've ever asked, "What Elden Ring boss should you invite to a barbeque?" As we enter our post-modern phase here at DT!HQ, Matt is here with a frisbee. Kyle violates the sacred rule by turning his plus one into a plus two. Todd tried to trick us all into being part of an intervention for his new friend who steals stars. If all of those sentences sound disconnected, you're right. Matt, Kyle and Todd have never played Elden Ring, so we had to call in a guest this week and Giovanni Colantonio answered the call!   Recommended reading: Special thanks to Giovanni for joining us on Debate This! today! Ep. 96: Three Years Older and a Whole Lot Worse

The year was 2018 and a small, independent podcast called Debate This! decided to reboot some not-so-famous Spider-Man villains from the "silly sixties." Today, 39 whole months later, that same small, independent podcast will dare to do it again. We may never best the likes of Paste Pot Pete, but we'll certainly aim higher than a "Living Vampire." Andrew brings us back to the wild world of animal-themed baddies this week as he leads us Down Under. Kyle combines The Fast and the Furious with the MCU in the mashup we've wanted for years. Matt brought a mobster with a big dumb forehead, and that's pretty much it. Come take a ride with us as we try to ride that sweet Morbius SEO wave as we decide which classic Spidey Villain deserves a Leto-esque reboot.   Recommended reading: Check out some classic DT! with Episode 18: Don't Bring a Knife to a Glue Gun Fight https://bit.ly/3NtFrsN   The title of this weeks episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community! Ep. 95: Bored Apes and Danger Room Japes

The early 2000s were truly a wild a time and nothing personifies the hubris of the new millennium better than the primetime lineup of Music Television. You may know Music Television by its Christian name, MTV, but you definitely know it as the cable channel which loved to show us the glamorous life of celebrities. Well, this week the execs asked us to put together a show for DT!V. They asked us to revamp 2000s MTV staple "Cribs" and determine which superhero lair would fit perfectly into a 2022 episode. Every once in a while, one of the Debaters finds a comic character that they want to talk about, whether or not they answer the question. That was Andrew's game plan this week. Todd and Kyle both brought child soldiers to the party and that's all we'll say about that.   Recommended reading: Here's the referenced Cribs compilation. Redman's feature starts at 6:00: https://youtu.be/6ix3twBu17Y   The title of this weeks episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community! Want to help us choose the next one? Ep. 94: It's About Drive

Look, you're reading the shownotes of this episode which means one of two things: you're either new to this show, in which case turn back now and start with a different episode...or you really care about this show, in which case we're very sorry. We've asked ourselves a lot of questions, dear listener, but this week we're doing something important. This week, we're predicting what video game movie Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will star in next. If you're in to real-time strategy games with nuclear diplomats and expansive skill trees, you're going to love Matt's answer. Todd tries to tell a gritty, emotional back story about a genocidal villain and it goes fine. Andrew does a bit and it's super dumb and bad. Recommended reading: It's been a hot minute since we talked about The Rock, but you can check out Ep. 13: Why is The Rock So Sweaty If you've never heard The Rock's rap song "Face Off" before, you can do so HERE, but don't say we didn't warn you.   The title of this week's episode was NOT selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community because we didn't want to spoil the bit! Ep. 93: The Interdogmensional Tournament of Champions

What is February 1st if not the afternoon of Thanksgiving persevering, am I right? If you couldn't follow the thread on that incredibly niche joke, today we're hosting a dog show! Spend your Tuesday the way suburban families spend their post-Macy's parade afternoon as Debate This! asks, who is the goodest boi in gaming? Take a nostalgic trip back in time as Matt brings up video games' first bully. Andrew brings a back-flipping dog who kills gods to the party. To answer your question, yes he's talking about Final Fantasy. Also, the sentience of Kyle's dog makes us all a little uncomfortable.   The title of this week's episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community! Want to help us choose the next one? FLAVOR TEXT: Arcane: League of Legends

Dive back into Runeterra with us today as we take another trip to Summoner's Rift. Today's FLAVOR TEXT once again takes us into the world of League of Legends. However, this time we are opening it up by offering an overview of the hit 2021 Netflix show Arcane! A story of love, heartbreak, cool hoverboards, daddy issues, and a man who is definitely going to use his technology to make a weapon, Arcane brings us the tragic origin story of two LoL champions: Vi and Jinx while two cities war over independence of each other. Per usual, we've got an Imgur link for you to follow along with (https://imgur.com/a/kBvLTah) while we have a disagreement over how that website is pronounced. Part of the package deal of telling more lore-based stories in the League of Legends' universe includes giving you all, the listeners, some sweet sweet character backstories. Specifically that of: Fiddlesticks, Graves, Twisted Fate, Gangplank, and Miss Fortune. Go read Fiddlesticks' origin story for yourself right now: https://universe.leagueoflegends.com/en_US/champion/fiddlesticks/. LASTLY we wrap today's FLAVOR TEXT by blowing Andrew's mind by exploring the special event/skin stories of PROJECT and Battle Academia in the League of Legends Universe aka future tech champions and Anime Punch School. Special thanks to zhakhix, champion of Summoner's Rift and proud member of #buttthwompnation, for commissioning today's episode! Ep. 92: E Pluribus Twiddly Bits

It's the season premiere episode, baby! To kick off season 5 of DT!, we're jumping in on one of the most popular games of all time. It's got more players than Fortnite and it's made more money than GTA 5. This week is all about Candy Crush! But we're not crushing candy or matching three in this episode. No, today we ask, "What Candy Crush Candy is the tastiest in real life?" Todd picked the candy with all of the powers. Matt's candy sends us down a fish-based rabbit hole. Kyle also picked the candy with all of the powers. Happy Winter Season of Non-Denominational Holiday Celebration to all of you who celebrate non-denominationaly! Happy Tuesday to those of you who don't! It's time for our final debate of the year and our annual shitty peripheral gift exchange! For those who joined our DT! Family in 2021, every year we find the wildest add-ons in vidja game history to wrap up and force on our friends in the name of capitalism. Grab a seat in the celebration circle and take in the infrared madness as Andrew introduces us to Nintendo's theremin. Kyle brought our new favorite television consumption device to the party this year and none of us can get enough. Ep. 90: Giovanni's Persian is a Thanos Simp

Did you hear? Did you hear? A new Pokemon game came out! Actually, it's not a new Pokemon game, it's an old Pokemon game. But they remade it! So it's new! Kinda. Hey, is the Pokemon formula getting a little tired? Is it time to run Pokemon through the DT!HQ machine to make it better? Is it time to make a comic book character a Pokemon Gym Leader? Probably not. But we did it anyway. Matt mostly talks about Netflix and ghosts, but what else is new? Todd is definitely the only one talking about a genocidal villain this week. Sorry, we couldn't stop him. Also, Kyle knows way too much about Pokemon, so this is really his fight to lose. Recommended reading: Debate This! Ep. 87: John Batman Eats His Froot Loops Whole

It's week three of our Spooktacular Journey on the Spooktacular Express and this week we're pulling in to ComicTown, USA. This weeks Halloween-centric episode has us morphing famous comic arcs into survival horror games. Do any of the debaters know enough about comics to turn them into games? If they do, have they ever played a survival horror game? Only time will tell. How do you feel about bugs? Because Matt is talking about bugs. Meanwhile, Kyle is only here to remake the second Avengers movie. Todd breaks glass in case of emergency and completes our proverbial Green Lantern EGOT.   Don't forget that we're running a Patreon special this month! FLAVOR TEXT: Ys

Check out the image gallery for the episode here: https://imgur.com/a/oh1zlgk   There's a curiousity in all of us. Sometimes that curiousity can spark us to learn a new skill, dive deep into a hobby, or maybe try a new food. And then other times that curiousity can lead us sailing a boat straight into a magical storm wall encircling an island cursed with a demonic plague. Meet Adol Christin, the subject of the Ys series, probably the greatest JRPG series you've never heard of that has been quietly pumping out games since 1987. Adol's wanderlust and penchant for surviving ship explosions leads him to far-off lands, often dealing with some inexplicable ancient magic and/or hidden civilization populated with sentient dinosaurs. Today, we're breaking down every single Ys game to date, ending with the ninth entry that came out earlier this year. Special thanks to "Master Specter" for commissioning today's episode!
