Indie Comics Spotlight: Adventure Zone

This week on Indie Comics Spotlight, Tony is joined by co-founder of Fantastic Universes, writer, thinker and all around amazing guy, Adam Ray to talk about the fun and fantastical comic Adventure Zone. Welcome to the Adventure Zone! SEE! The illustrated exploits of three lovable dummies set loose in a classic fantasy adventure! READ! Their journey from small-time bodyguards to world-class artifact hunters! MARVEL! At the sheer metafictional chutzpah of a graphic novel based on a story created in a podcast where three dudes and their dad play a tabletop role playing game in real time! Join Taako the elf wizard, Merle the dwarf cleric, and Magnus the human warrior for an adventure they are poorly equipped to handle AT BEST, guided ("guided") by their snarky DM, in a graphic novel that, like the smash-hit podcast it's based on, will tickle your funny bone, tug your heartstrings, and probably pants you if you give it half a chance. With endearingly off-kilter storytelling from master goofballs Clint McElroy and the McElroy brothers, and vivid, adorable art by Carey Pietsch, The Adventure Zone: Here There be Gerblins is the comics equivalent of role-playing in your friend's basement at 2am, eating Cheetos and laughing your ass off as she rolls critical failure after critical failure. Indie Comics Spotlight: The Boys Vol. 1-6

Comics in Motion is now a Humble Bundle Partner.  Get the goodies! This week, the show is so epic that Tony needed two guests to cover it. First, back from his triumphant appearance when we covered Preacher is Brad Filicky of DC Comics News and the DC comics news podcast network. Also, a man whose middle name might legally be changed to podcaster, Dave Horrocks.Co-Founder of the Comics in Motion network. Brad, Dave and Tony do a DEEP DEEP dive into Dynamite comics fever dream, super hero bashing, norm shattering series. The Boys. The Boys is an American comic book series, written by Garth Ennis and co-created, designed, and illustrated by Darick Robertson. It was originally published by Wildstorm (DC Comics) before moving to Dynamite Entertainment. The series is set between 2006–2008 in a world where superheroes exist. However, most of the superheroes in the series’ universe are corrupted by their celebrity status and often engage in reckless behavior, compromising the safety of the world. The story follows a small clandestine CIA squad, informally known as “The Boys“, led by Butcher and also consisting of Mother’s Milk, the Frenchman, the Female, and new addition “Wee” Hughie Campbell, who are charged with monitoring the superhero community, often leading to gruesome confrontations and dreadful results; in parallel, a key subplot follows Annie “Starlight” January, a young and naive superhero who joins the Seven, the most prestigious – and corrupted – superhero group in the world and The Boys‘ most powerful enemies. Genres: Drama, Horror, Mature, Superhero Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment Writer: Garth Ennis Artist: Darick Robertson Publication date: October 2006 – November 2012 If you want to talk with Tony about comics or to suggest any future shows, please connect with him on Twitter @Tricycleboombox. Star Wars: Comics In Canon - Ep 33: Yoda’s Stonepower Master & Secret War Before TPM (Star Wars #26-30)

This week Mike delves into the arc of the main Star Wars comics featuring the near-900 year old jedi master Yoda, set before The Phantom Menace! This arc includes Yoda saving a force sensitive child from pirates, learning a “new force power” from an unexpected master, living rock and how Yoda’s involvement in a secret war catches up to Luke nearly 35 years later! For the first two & a half minutes of this pod, Mike talks about the new weekly Mandalorian show under the SWCIC banner on this feed, there are no spoilers in this episode (so fear not!), but you can just skip to the 2 minute mark if you aren’t fussed! Mike also recommends checking out the last four episodes of season 6 of The Clone Wars (episodes 10-13) as they centre around Yoda learning about force ghosts, Dagobah and other Force-related things (you don’t need to watch any other episodes of CW as these four standalone). For Yoda's Secret War, Jason Aaron was the writer, with Salvador Larroca as the artist and Edgar Delgado as the colourist. The cover artist was Stuart Immonen. Issue 26 was released December 2016 and issue 30 was out April 2017, the trade paperback (vol 5 of SW) was out July 2017 and this arc is included in the Journals Of Obi-Wan Kenobi collection released mid-November 2020. Last week, in episode 32, Mike tackled the other 4 stories present in the Journals Of Old Ben/Obi-Wan which focus on his time on Tatooine, so be sure to check that out too! Mike was recently on the Scott Pilgrim Vs The World review for the TV & Movies show on Comics In Motion where he discussed the movie with Dave of CiM and Tony of Indie Comic Spotlight, found on this feed (dated 8thOctober) check it out here: https://spoti.fi/33I9N5L Mike also appeared on the second episode of Comics On Trial, defending The Phantom Menace against Scott of 20th Century Geek, with Paul of Superheroes For Dummies as the judge, also found on this feed (20th September): https://spoti.fi/2FTjvZI Get some great deals at Humble Bundle using this link, plus you'll be supporting the shows on the Comics In Motion Network: https://www.humblebundle.com/?partner=comicsinmotion Comics In Motion also has an excellent offer exclusively for our listeners! Indie Comics Spotlight: The Plain Janes with Cecil Castellucci

This Week, Tony is joined by comic writer, novelist, punk rocker and all around icon Cecil Castellucci. Follow her on Twitter and Instagram. Meet the Plain Janes--artist activists on a mission to wake up their sleepy suburban town. This cult classic graphic novel is perfect for fans of The LumberJanes and Awkward. When artsy misfit Jane Beckles is forced to leave her beloved city life behind for the boring suburb of Kent Waters, she thinks her life is over. But then she finds where she belongs: at the reject table in the cafeteria, along with fellow misfits Brain Jayne, Theater Jane, and sporty Polly Jane. United by only two things-a shared name and frustration with the adults around them--the girls form a secret club dedicated to fighting suburban apathy with guerrilla works of art scattered around their small town. But for Main Jane, the group is more than simple teenaged rebellion; it's an act of survival. She's determined not to let fear rule her life like it does her parents' and neighbors' lives. Armed with her sketchbook and a mission of resistance, the PLAIN Janes are out to prove that passion, bravery, and a group of great friends can save anyone from the hell that is high school. With each installment printed in its own distinct color, this volume includes the original two stories--The Plain Janes and Janes in Love--plus a never-before-seen third story, Janes Attack Back. The Janes are back, and better than ever. Buy the book on Bookshop. You can hear Thano’s first appearance on ICS here. Support Thanos’ new Kickstarter Dreamlands here. You can buy Bordershere.
