Olivia Thirlby Revisits Juno, Dredd and Details Her Very Unusual Casting Process for Y: The Last Man

Olivia Thirlby Revisits Juno, Dredd and Details Her Very Unusual Casting Process for Y: The Last Man

Olivia Thirlby just added a mighty exciting title to her filmography, and it was a title that was a bit unexpected for her. It’s FX’s Y: The Last Man.Based on the DC Comics’ series from Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, the show covers what happens when an apocalyptic event kills every mammal with a Y chromosome minus two individuals — Yorick Brown (Ben Schnetzer) and his monkey, Ampersand. With the world in disarray, survivors do what they can to rebuild and carve out a better path forward. For Thirlby’s character, Yorick’s sister Hero Brown, that means doing what she can to keep herself and her best friend Sam (Elliot Fletcher) safe while juggling the sting of the rift between her and her mother (Diane Lane) and also the weight of a very traumatic pre-event experience. With Y: The Last Man now well into its Season 1 run, Thirlby took the time to join us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night. Given how much she’s accomplished over the years, there was a lot to cover including her experience making her first feature, The Secret, working with a Diablo Cody script on Juno and addressing the continuing sequel enthusiasm for Dredd. You can hear about all of that and her experience bringing Hero Brown to screen in Y: The Last Man in this episode of Collider Ladies Night! Learn more about your ad choices. Vanessa Hudgens Interview: Her Evolution from High School Music to “Gritty, Hard Parts"

Vanessa Hudgens Interview: Her Evolution from High School Music to “Gritty, Hard Parts"

Vanessa Hudgens has achieved quite a bit over the years, but her latest accomplishment marks a very big first, something she’s been eager to do for a good while now — voice a character in an animated feature.Hudgens is the voice behind Sunny in My Little Pony: A New Generation. She's an Earth Pony who’s determined to find a way to bring the Earth Ponies, Unicorns and Pegasi together again. Trouble is, each species lives separately and has allowed false assumptions, fear and mistrust to continue to drive them apart. However, with the help of a few new friends — Unicorn Izzy (Kimiko Glenn), Pegasi Pipp (Sofia Carson) and Zipp (Liza Koshy), and fellow Earth Pony Hitch (James Marsden) — Sunny might finally be able to bring them all together and restore magic to Equestria in the process. With My Little Pony: A New Generation now available to stream on Netflix, Hudgens joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to retrace her steps from her earliest credits to her first animated feature. We discussed the High School Musical films, Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, Lin Manuel-Miranda’s feature directorial debut Tick, Tick... Boom!, and so much more! Midnight Mass: Kate Siegel Explains How She Met Mike Flanagan

Midnight Mass: Kate Siegel Explains How She Met Mike Flanagan

I’ve been a massive fan of Kate Siegel’s since 2016's Hush and that enthusiasm for her talent has only grown since the release of The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and now Midnight Mass. Given how much I admire her work, it was the ultimate treat to have Siegel on Collider Ladies Night to learn more about how she got started in the industry and how her craft evolved from project to project.Siegel plays Erin Greene in Midnight Mass. She grew up in the small, isolated community on Crockett Island, but ultimately made the move to the mainland. However, she eventually comes to decide it’s best if she returned to Crockett to build a new life for herself and for her baby-on-the-way there.During our Collider Ladies Night conversation, Siegel shared a good deal about her earliest inspirations, her experience studying acting at Syracuse University and how she almost switched to a career in international finance before meeting the person who’d wind up changing her life on screen and off, Mike Flanagan.Check out what she had to say about that, filming an epic jump scare in Haunting of Hill House, how Midnight Mass evolved from novel to Netflix show and more in this edition of Collider Ladies Night! Dear Evan Hansen: Kaitlyn Dever on What Made Ben Platt the Ideal Scene Partner

Dear Evan Hansen: Kaitlyn Dever on What Made Ben Platt the Ideal Scene Partner

It’s always a delight chatting with Kaitlyn Dever, but it was especially exciting to finally welcome her to Collider Ladies Night! Dever is currently celebrating the release of Dear Evan Hansen this weekend, but she’s had an especially exciting and very busy journey to this highly anticipated film. The movie is the big screen adaptation of the Tony Award winning musical that sees Ben Platt returning to the title role. Evan Hansen is a high school student struggling with anxiety. His therapist suggests he write letters to himself, but one day, a troubled, school outcast named Connor (Colton Ryan) takes one of those personal and very private letters. Soon after, Connor takes his own life and when Connor’s mother (Amy Adams) finds Evan’s letter, she assumes Connor wrote it to Evan and that they were close friends. Evan plays along and perpetuates the lie in an attempt to ease her pain, and do the same for Connor's sister, Zoe (Dever), as well.During our Collider Ladies Night conversation, Dever took some time to revisit the beginnings of her career and offer some insight into how her hopes and expectations for “making it” in the industry have changed. Check out this edition of Ladies Night to hear all about some of her earliest auditions, including Justified, what it was like working with Kathryn Bigelow on Detroit, what made Ben Platt a standout scene partner on Dear Evan Hansen and loads more! Sex Education 3: Aimee Lou Wood Shares the Vital Advice for Doing Sex Scenes

Sex Education 3: Aimee Lou Wood Shares the Vital Advice for Doing Sex Scenes

Sex Education is a must-watch show and Aimee Lou Wood is a must-follow rising star in it. The Netflix series focuses on a group of students at Moordale Secondary School trying to figure out how to fit in, grow up and find themselves. One of the most beautiful things about the show is that it features a diverse cast and explores a wide variety of very human challenges with humor, heart and pathos.Wood’s character, Aimee, begins her Sex Education journey by figuring out who her true friends are in Season 1. Wood is a scene stealer in the role right out the gate, but the work she delivers the following season is on another level. In Season 2, Aimee is sexually assaulted and the way the show explores how one might process such an experience is incredibly layered and powerful. Rather than keep the storyline confined to an episode or two, Sex Education recognizes the fact that such trauma isn’t something one can quickly leave behind. In Season 3, Aimee is still working to understand the incident and its effects on her with Wood continuing to bring that story to life on screen with such sincerity and nuance.Check out this edition of Collider Ladies Night to hear all about Wood's experience studying at RADA, how she scored the role of Aimee on Sex Education, lessons learned from the show's intimacy coordinators, what it was like winning a BAFTA, where she thinks Aimee's head is at at the end of Sex Education Season 3, and so much more! Mary Elizabeth Winstead Interview: From Sky High Villain to Netflix Assassin

Mary Elizabeth Winstead Interview: From Sky High Villain to Netflix Assassin

Collider Ladies Night recently celebrated its very first returning guest, Karen Gillan for Gunpowder Milkshake. Now the show welcomes back its second returnee, Mary Elizabeth Winstead! Winstead swung by the Collider studio for an episode of Ladies Night back in 2019 for the release of Gemini Man and now she’s on the show again in honor of her new Netflix movie, Kate.Winstead headlines the film as the title character, a skilled assassin who winds up being targeted herself. When Kate realizes she’s been poisoned, she sets out to track down who did it. Kate is essentially non-stop action with Winstead at the heart of almost every single scene. As though that isn't challenging enough, Winstead and the team behind Kate hit a little bump in that road that called for Winstead to step it up with her stuntwork -- more than ever before. On this episode of Collider Ladies Night, Winstead details the challenges faced while making Kate and explains why she wound up doing more of her own stuntwork than you might expect. On top of that, Winstead looks back on fan favorite films like Sky High, Final Destination 3, Birds of Prey and more! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices Hosted on Acast. Fear Street's Emily Rudd on How She Went From Music Video Star to Netflix Powerhouse

Fear Street's Emily Rudd on How She Went From Music Video Star to Netflix Powerhouse

This was a very big summer for Emily Rudd. Not only was it announced that she joined the cast of the Amazon series, Hunters, for Season 2 and was set to star in HBO Max’s Moonshot alongside Cole Sprouse and Lana Condor, but her star also soared courtesy of the popularity of Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy. Rudd first appears in the second film of the series, Fear Street 1978. Cindy Berman is a Shadyside resident determined to leave the troubled town behind despite the fact that her sister Ziggy (Sadie Sink) is convinced there’s nothing they can do -- all Shadysiders are doomed. The reality of their situation comes into focus for Cindy during the summer of 1978 at Camp Nightwing when the Shadyside campers and counselors are targeted by an ax-wielding killer.Given my confidence that Fear Street is bound to become a genre classic and my sky high hopes we’ll be watching Rudd’s work for years to come, having her on an episode of Collider Ladies Night was an absolute must. Maggie Q Interview: From Nikita and Mission: Impossible III to The Protégé

Maggie Q is kicking ass on screen yet again in Martin Campbell’s The Protégé. Q leads the film as Anna, a contract killer trained by Samuel L. Jackson’s Moody, who’s also like a father to her. When Moody is murdered, Anna sets out on a mission to track down the individual who had him killed.Q is an undeniable top tier action star in The Protégé. While I’d like to bet that skillset was always there in some form, Q has spent a good deal of time honing that craft over the years to get to the level that she’s at here. With The Protégé now in theaters, Q joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to revisit her journey from kicking off her action film run in Asia, to starring opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III and, of course, to headlining The CW’s Nikita.Hear about all of that, the scariest stunt Q had to do in The Protégé, her interest in making another Protégé movie and loads more in this edition of Collider Ladies Night Learn more about your ad choices. Why Mare of Easttown Gives Betty Gilpin Hope for Breaking Out of the “Barbie Shell”

I’m of the mind that Betty Gilpin is currently one of the best of the best in film and television. Of course the success of Netflix’s GLOW was a major game-changer, earning Gilpin three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, but it’s the pairing of her work in GLOW and The Hunt in particular that firmly solidifies that Gilpin is someone who has range for days to show off - if the industry would just continue to let her tap into it. While celebrating the release of Amazon’s The Tomorrow War, Gilpin joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to retrace her steps in the industry and to discuss her hopes for the future.Hear all about how Mare of Easttown served as an inspiration, how Gilpin dealt with the cancellation of GLOW, what it was like working with director Chris McKay on The Tomorrow War and loads more on this edition of Collider Ladies Night! Jordana Brewster Career Interview: The Faculty to Fast and Furious 9 - Collider Ladies Night

It still feels like just yesterday that I caught my first of many big screen viewings of The Faculty, Jordana Brewster’s feature debut and the film that’d quickly convince me she’d continue to deliver big and pick projects I’d wind up falling hard for. Sure enough, then came D.E.B.S., The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and six Fast and Furious films.Brewster’s Mia returns to the Fast franchise for the ninth installment after sitting out The Fate of the Furious. The crew promised to let Mia and Brian (Paul Walker) live happily ever after with their children, free and clear of their dangerous missions, but when the latest involves Dom (Vin Diesel) and Mia’s estranged brother Jakob (John Cena), it calls for Mia’s return. With the latest in the mega franchise, F9, hitting theaters on June 25th, Brewster took the time to join us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to takes us from her early days on All My Children to enjoying a lengthy run with one of the biggest film franchises of all time. In the Heights Star Leslie Grace on Making the Leap from Music to Film - Collider Ladies Night

One of the most staggering things about In the Heights? It’s Leslie Grace’s feature debut. Given all of her accomplishments in the music sphere, one might expect her to nail the song and dance numbers, but she also brings a level of nuance and heart to her performance that feels like a skill learned via a great deal of experience.Grace plays Nina, a Washington Heights resident who’s returning home after her first year at Stanford University. The whole neighborhood is extremely proud of her and has sky high hopes for everything she’s bound to achieve, but inside, Nina’s struggling and wants to drop out. The pressure Nina is under leaps off the screen courtesy of Grace’s performance and her ability to give the viewer access to the push and pull of Nina’s situation. The motivation is there, but is it enough to overcome the pressure of what it means to be someone who “made it out?”Check out this episode of Collider Ladies Night to hear all about Grace’s supportive family, what it was like auditioning for In the Heights, the invaluable note she received from director Jon M. Scoring a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a long time coming for Teyonah Parris. While on Collider Ladies Night, Parris revealed that WandaVision wasn’t the first MCU project she put herself on tape for. In fact, she’s been making tapes for Marvel for roughly a decade now. Not only did Parris wind up playing a character who shines in Marvel’s very first Disney+ series, but Monica also appears to have a mighty bright future in the franchise. On top of that? Pre-WandaVision, Parris was still busy wracking up one impressive credit after the next including Chi-Raq, Survivor’s Remorse and so much more!We did get the chance to touch on a whole bunch of those non-MCU titles in this episode of Collider Ladies Night but, of course, we had to put a good deal of the spotlight on Parris’ work as Monica in WandaVision, beginning with her audition for the role. Kelly Marie Tran on Star Wars, Raya and the Value of Her Improv Skills

Kelly Marie Tran on Star Wars, Raya and the Value of Her Improv Skills

I’ve been hoping for a long form interview with Kelly Marie Tran ever since first meeting her at the Star Wars: The Last Jedi premiere party. Not only did I wind up falling hard for her new addition to the franchise - Rose Tico, a Resistance mechanic who’s heart is very much in the right place and has the power to inspire others - but Tran herself was also especially warm and bubbling with excitement for the film. As someone who often can’t contain her love for this industry and the stories it shares, seeing someone so enthusiastic while taking her first major step towards becoming a big part of it made that brief encounter unforgettable.Sure enough, Tran took that opportunity, and also her own raw talent, and has been running with it ever since - on screen and off. While using her platform and voice to inspire, Tran is busy racking up impressive film and television credits in a number of different capacities. She starred opposite Elizabeth Olsen in Sorry for Your Loss, she’s been crushing it in the voice acting department with features like The Croods: A New Age and now Disney Animation’s Raya and the Last Dragon, and she’s also adding some impressive producing credits to the list as well. She’s an executive producer on the award-winning documentary Lily Topples the World and she’s an EP on Carlos López Estrada’s upcoming film Summertime as well. All this and she still found time to wow the world with her Miscast21 performance, playing both Elder Price and Elder Cunningham in a rendition of "You and Me (But Mostly Me)" from The Book of Mormon.Check out what Tran had to say about many of those titles in this edition of Collider Ladies Night! Lily Rabe on Getting Spooky for American Horror Story and Sweaty for Tell Me Your Secrets

Lily Rabe’s star power skyrocketed when American Horror Story turned into an epic phenomenon on launch back in 2011. She continues to excel in that series, but has also been quite busy adding more titles to her resume with the most recent additions being HBO’s The Undoing and the Amazon’s latest, Tell Me Your Secrets.Rabe headlines the show playing Karen Miller, a woman who’s arrested with her boyfriend Kit (Xavier Samuel) for the role she played in the murders he committed. At the start of the series, she’s out of jail and part of the Witness Protection Program, assuming the name Emma Hall. While trying to lay low and steer clear of trouble, Emma is also challenged to figure out what really happened to one of Kit’s victims, an incident she claims she can’t remember.Whether you’ve seen all of AHS, The Undoing and Tell Me Your Secrets or just a single credit on Rabe’s resume, I’m willing to bet you already know she’s often a standout in whatever show she’s in. Judas and the Black Messiah's Dominique Fishback on Her Path to the Awards Contender

Judas and the Black Messiah's Dominique Fishback on Her Path to the Awards Contender

Mark my words; Dominique Fishback is going to be a household name very, very soon. (And if I had any say in Oscar nominations, it’d be happening one month from now.) Fishback stars in Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah as Deborah Johnson (now Akua Njeri), a young woman who’s taken by Fred Hampton’s (Daniel Kaluuya) ideology and goals, and also sparks a connection to Chairman Fred on a personal level. While Judas and the Black Messiah well highlights the scope of Chairman Fred’s influence and the great value of his dedication to the movement, it’s through the intimacy of his relationship with Deborah that the film also successfully conveys the personal stakes involved in this fight for freedom.Ever since chatting with Fishback and a few other members of The Hate U Give ensemble back in 2018, I’ve been eager for a long form conversation with the rising star about her commitment to her craft, and now that Judas and the Black Messiah is available to watch on HBO Max, that time has finally come. Fishback joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night and she most certainly didn’t disappoint; her journey is oozing with hard work, passion and gratitude every single step of the way.Hear all about her experience working on The Deuce, Project Power, Judas and the Black Messiah and so much more right here! WandaVision: MCU Powerhouse Elizabeth Olsen Once "Felt Very Stupid" for Wanting to Act - Collider Ladies Night

As much as I enjoy discussing current success on Collider Ladies Night - especially when it’s a standout new series like WandaVision - I find that one of the most exciting components of the conversation is the part that focuses on someone’s experience breaking into the industry and the earliest stages of honing their craft, because every path is different. We’ve done dozens of episodes of Ladies Night at this point, highlighting a whole bunch of unique experiences that hopefully all add up to convey that you can achieve your dream in a way that’s true to you. And it turns out, I’ve got another prime example of that right here with Elizabeth Olsen’s episode of the show.Hear all about Olsen's earliest experiences breaking into the industry, how things changed after Martha Marcy May Marlene, how she scored her first blockbuster roles in Godzilla and Avengers: Age of Ultron, what it was like making WandaVision, working with Sam Raimi on Doctor Stranger in the Multiverse of Madness and so much more! The Wilds: Mia Healey on Her Whirlwind Journey to Amazon and Bungee Jumping with Erana James - Collider Ladies Night

I’m especially excited about this new edition of Collider Ladies Night for a number of reasons. First off, I’m obsessed with the new Amazon series The Wilds. It debuted on Prime Video in early December and follows a group of young woman stranded on a deserted island. Not only is there a fascinating mystery at play, but the show also features a downright stellar ensemble including our Ladies Night guest, Mia Healey. So yes, I was beyond thrilled to talk about a show I fell so hard for with Healey, but the other exciting thing about this conversation is that it marks the very first episode of Collider Ladies Night that puts the spotlight on someone getting their first screen credit. Check out this video to hear all about Healey's earliest inspirations, what it was like being on her first big set, working with Erana James on the Shelby and Toni relationship, her hopes for Shelby in Season 2 of the show and so much more! Alison Brie Breaks Down Her Career from Hannah Montana and Community to GLOW and Happiest Season

I’m truly utterly delighted by every single episode of Collider Ladies Night that I’m lucky enough to do, but Alison Brie has to get some sort of bonus points for the downright adorable cat cameos and ranking the Scream movies with me. And to think, that only covered a small fraction of our chat!Brie’s accomplished quite a bit since making her TV debut in Hannah Montana back in 2006, enjoying many seasons with Community and Mad Men, scoring two Screen Actors Guild nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her work on Netflix’s GLOW, and appearing in a slew of stellar films, personal favorites being Scream 4, The Kings of Summer and now Hulu’s Happiest Season, just to name a few. Sarah Paulson Discusses How Her Law & Order Audition Made All the Difference

You won’t have to get too far into this new installment of Collider Ladies Night to learn that Sarah Paulson is one of my absolute favorite individuals in the industry. I’m a diehard American Horror Story fan and marvel at her on-screen work across the board, but over the years, I’ve also come to deeply appreciate how her passion, honesty and attention to detail shines through in all of our interviews. At this point, Paulson has six Emmy nominations to her name and one win for her performance as Marcia Clark in American Crime Story, she’s directed an episode of American Horror Story, is an executive producer on Ratched, just got a long overdue lead role in a studio feature with Run, and shows absolutely no signs of slowing down whatsoever. Betsy Brandt on Flexing Her Acting Muscles, Moving from 'Breaking Bad' and 'Magic Mike' to 'Soulmates'

Betsy Brandt on Flexing Her Acting Muscles, Moving from 'Breaking Bad' and 'Magic Mike' to 'Soulmates'

Breaking Bad alone shows off Betsy Brandt’s significant range. Marie Schrader added loads of much needed comic relief, but also afforded Brandt the opportunity to excel during some of the show’s darker beats, even making the most of a single reaction shot in the Emmy winning episode, “Ozymandias.” Want even more proof that Brandt can do just about anything? Give her filmography a quick glance beyond Breaking Bad. That line-up includes sitcoms like Life in Pieces and The Michael J. Fox Show, a powerhouse dramatic turn in Claire in Motion, and even film appearances where she contributes by making a single scene unforgettable like in Magic Mike. Hope you're ready for even more proof of Brandt’s range because her Soulmates character experiences quite the arc in the final episode of the season, “The (Power) Ballad of Caitlin Jones.”Brandt leads as the title character, Caitlin, a woman trapped in a loveless relationship with a guy who walks all over her. In an effort to find “the one,” Caitlin turns to the show’s futuristic dating technology, Soul Connex, a test that pinpoints one’s soulmate with 100% accuracy. That test matches Caitlin with JJ Feild's Nathan, a too-good-to-be-true type who, of course, has a dark side. With “The (Power) Ballad of Caitlin Jones” airing on AMC on Monday, October 9th, Brandt took the time to join us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night. Rachael Leigh Cook Discusses Her Journey from She’s All That to Netflix - Collider Ladies Night

Rachael Leigh Cook was one of my absolute favorites growing up. The Baby-Sitters Club, All I Wanna Do and She’s All That were basically on repeat in my house. As thrilled as I was to get to revisit memories from those productions during this edition of Collider Ladies Nights, one of the greatest joys of this conversation with Cook for her new Netflix release, Love, Guaranteed, was hearing about what Cook learned from all of those experiences and how it all landed her in a place where she has a degree of control over the content she’s making.Check out this edition of Collider Ladies Night to hear all about how Cook's collaboration with Crown Media and The Hallmark Channel wound up being a game changer, what it was like working on the “This Is Your Brain on Drugs” PSAs, a key conversation she had with The Baby-Sitters Club director Melanie Mayron, how her audition for Can’t Hardly Wait paved the way to Josie and the Pussycats, and so much more.
