Episode 86: Big Tech Stock Profits Soaring – Why Amazon, Meta, and Qualcomm Stocks Are Top Buy-and-Holds In 2024
It was a busy week, and big tech certainly delivered the tune Wall Street was hoping to hear. Growth is back, and with it, massive increases to profitability. Amazon and Meta were showing off in grand style, and Meta announced its first-ever dividend.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm’s revenue recovery is still taking hold, but earnings are ratcheting higher anyways. The automotive segment in particular bucked the industry trend as automakers can’t seem to get enough of Qualcomm’s chips powering new vehicle technology trends.
Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss these three companies in todays episode, and why they remain optimistic on their growth prospects in 2024.

Episode 85: Forget AI Chips, This Is the Real Reason AMD Stock Could Rise In 2024
In this episode of Chip Stock Investor, Nick and Kasey discuss the much anticipated Q4 2023 earnings for AMD. AMD has been talking plenty about its foray into AI, competing in the same ring as Nvidia. But as we have said before, it's hard to play catch up to the leader.
That doesn’t necessarily make us bearish on AMD, however. On the contrary, the focus conveyed in the most recent earnings call and the financial numbers indicate that AMD has a solid growth strategy in the years ahead.
Our analysis covers key areas like AMD's merger with Xilinx, the potential for profit margin expansion, and the high-growth AI market and the continued competition with NVIDIA and Intel. But Chip Stock Investor’s primary focus is on AMD's profit margins in 2024, and trends in the PC and laptop sales segment. We conclude with our view on AMD's stock valuation.
Stay tuned and make sure you are subbed to receive updates on Amazon, Qualcomm, and Microchip in the coming vids!

With each stock, they extract an investing lesson learned (or relearned) after investing through the bear market of the last two years.
Next up later this week, we’ll cover why we still like Qualcomm (QCOM) and Arcadium Lithium (ALTM, formerly Livent and Allkem)!

Episode 70:3 Small Cap Chip Stocks (AEHR, INDI, ACMR): Are They A Buy For 2024?
In this video, Chip Stock Investor reviews three popular small cap chip stocks, Aehr Test Systems (AEHR), indie Semiconductor (INDI), and ACM Research (ACMR). Nick and Kasey begin with Aehr Test Systems, where they correct previous statements about Tesla’s requirements for its silicon carbide chips.
Moving on to indie Semiconductor, they discuss the company's aggressive expansion, share dilution, complex shareholder structure, and lack of profitability (at least presently) -- serious business model concerns the market seems to be giving a pass on.
Finally, ACM Research's reliance on China for revenue, as well as some complications related to its business structure, and profits that may not be as good as they seem. Nevertheless, ACM Research has been making a solid go of things thus far, at least keeping Chip Stock Investor’s interest in occasional coverage for now. Perhaps that will change in 2024.
Later this week, stay tuned for Chip Stock Investor’s favorite semiconductor stocks to kick off 2024!

Episode 69: Cybersecurity Stock Investor: Broadcom + VMware Shake-Up of Top Cybersecurity Stocks In 2024?
Broadcom is coming fresh off yet another record year of sales and profitability, and now it owns VMware! But that’s old news. Now the market is eyeing what Broadcom will actually do with VMware.
CEO Hock Tan has said that the cybersecurity unit of VMware, Carbon Black, will be sold off. That could mean a boost for cybersecurity peers like CrowdStrike in 2024.
Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey review where the fast-growing security software market is at right now, who might benefit the most from Broadcom’s shake-up, as well as a refresher on why top pure-plays in the industry Palo Alto Networks (PANW) and Fortinet (FTNT) are slowing. They also reveal their top cybersecurity stock they like for the start of 2024, and why.

Episode 68: Micron Confirms the PC and Smartphone Market Growth Is Back, 1 Memory Chip Stock We Like More (SIMO)
Micron Technology (MU) provided an update to its current quarter’s financial guidance, indicating that growth in the PC and smartphone market is making a comeback after over a year of a terrible downturn. Micron’s expected rise in sales could bode well for this large part of the chip industry.
However, Micron is still operating deep in the red, and the stock price rally this year is pricing in much of the 2024 expected recovery. Chip Stock Investor discusses one memory chip stock they like even better than Micron right now: Silicon Motion Technology (SIMO), a leader in flash memory controllers that recently had a falling out with its merger with MaxLinear (MXL).
In this video, Nick and Kasey discuss investing in SiliconMotion, risks they expect could undermine the company’s future returns, but why they like it better than Micron stock right now. See below for more on our coverage of Micron, SiliconMotion, and what happened to its terminated merger with MaxLinear.

Episode 67: Is Broadcom (AVGO) Stock A Buy Now?
Broadcom (AVGO) has finally closed its acquisition of VMware (VMW) after a year-and-a-half since it was originally announced in May 2022. The newly combined company is a juggernaut in computing infrastructure and software, and a unique stock. The new Broadcom is almost a fifty-fifty split between semiconductors and cloud and enterprise software.
But is Broadcom stock really a buy now that it owns VMware? Chip Stock Investor breaks down the financials, and explains how Broadcom’s sprawling chip and cloud software business is organized and managed. Nick and Kasey also discuss an important valuation metric using enterprise value and free cash flow, and what Broadcom’s key priority will be in the next couple years. Additionally, they explain why Broadcom stock may not be the value it was a year ago when they were buying it last.
And finally, they take a look at the implications of Broadcom’s high level of debt. Over two years ago, Nick called out similarities between Intel (INTC) and IBM of the 2010s, and early in 2023 discussed mounting headwinds for Texas Instruments (TXN). Now, he’s calling out a potential issue that Broadcom investors should be mindful of. Is Broadcom becoming the next General Electric (GE)? That may be a premature call, but investors interested in or invested in Broadcom should be aware of new risks after the VMware purchase.

Nvidia blew away expectations again in Q3 as AI sales to a new breed of data centers continues at a breakneck pace. Additionally, Nvidia seems to be also enjoying the start of a robust recovery for the PC market, as peers AMD and Intel also reported recently.
Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey revamp their valuation with assumptions for the rest of this year, and an early look at what 2024 could hold for Nvidia. They then give their thoughts on whether Nvidia stock is a buy, and how most investors may want to approach a stock like this one.
At the end of the episode, a brief recap of Broadcom’s valuation now that the VMware acquisition is being completed is also given. Stay tuned for more on that topic!

Episode 65: Does Applied Materials Legal Issues Mean ASML Is Next? And OpenAI Business Model Drama
It was a dramatic weekend in the high tech world. OpenAI fired its co-founder and CEO, Sam Altman, and the subsequent uprising has many scratching their heads over the generative AI app creator. Altman is now at Microsoft. Chip Stock Investor has a hunch and a few ideas as to why Microsoft may want Altman to stay in-house, and surprise(!), it may have to do with semiconductors!
Reuters also threw a wrench into a seemingly decent Applied Materials (AMAT) quarterly earnings late last week. The report claims that AMAT sold “hundreds of millions of dollars” worth of machines that were under the U.S. export ban to China. If you have been reading the 10-Q filings, though, you would know that this has been disclosed in each quarterly report since August 2022. But this does beg the question: Will this investigation stop at Applied Materials? Or will it also affect companies like ASML and others in the “Fab Five” that sell semiconductor manufacturing equipment?
Also, India has been pushing hard to bring semiconductor manufacturing to the country. News from Tata Group!
Stay tuned to Chip Stock Investor for an Nvidia (NVDA) quarterly update later in the week!

Episode 64: Nvidia H200 Is Coming, Will AMD and Intel “Catch Up” In the AI Arms Race?
Nvidia recently announced its newest GPU-powered system for AI training and inference, the H200. This will be the first using HBM3e (an updated version of third-generation high-bandwidth memory) integrated with Nvidia’s Hopper GPU chip architecture to deliver more data for AI training and inference.
Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang is clearly aware of coming competition, as he’s always been in the past, but the stakes have never been higher. AMD and Intel have AI chips of their own. AMD in particular has been investing in accompanying software (the ROCm ecosystem) to “catch up” to Nvidia. But is this even possible? And more importantly, is playing “catch up” even the best way to measure progress for investors in AMD and Intel?
Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss two general things that need to happen to unseat a technological leader. After that, they invert the argument for AMD and Intel and provide some simple metrics shareholders in the two companies can use in the year ahead as the AI race heats up.

Episode 63: Tesla’s Lithium Refinery “A License to Print Money,” and Is Livent (LTHM) Stock Out Of Juice?
In this video, we will discuss Tesla's recent move into lithium refining and what it means for the company, and the electric vehicle industry as a whole.
Tesla is investing in lithium refining with the new facility being built in Texas, in order to reduce its reliance on external suppliers and lower the cost of its electric vehicles. This is a smart move, as lithium is a key component of EV batteries and a significant cost of the electric vehicle.
Tesla's move into lithium refining could put pressure on its competitors, who will need to find ways to reduce their own costs in order to compete. This could lead to an even deeper price war in the EV industry, which would be good for consumers, and one in which Tesla is most capable of winning.
Livent, another lithium company, is merging with Allkem, to form the company Arcadium. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2023. The merger with Allkem would further vertically integrate the company and make it more competitive in the lithium production space as well. However, Livent stock has taken a beating, with the cost of raw lithium tumbling in the last several months. However, lithium refining is a lucrative business, and Livent seems to have that “license to print money” that Elon Musk was talking about.
What are our long term thoughts on each of these companies, and the lithium market overall? Check out this episode to find out!

It’s been a rough earnings season for many stocks, and “next-gen” energy and fuel companies have been no exception. Leader in hydrogen and liquid natural gas Air Products and Chemicals (APD) continues its big spending spree on infrastructure for future growth, as has Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)(BRK.B).
In the lithium market, Albemarle (ALB) once again adjusted its 2023 expectations as well. It’s been a particularly turbulent year for this sensitive and cyclical proxy stock for electric vehicle growth. What’s going on?
Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey delve into some of the current challenges for these companies, including some accounting effects, that could dramatically ease in 2024. They also unpack why big expenses on infrastructure don’t phase them as much as they do for chip manufacturing company Texas Instruments (TXN) as they discuss the importance of industry dynamics and business model when building a portfolio. All this and more in this latest episode of Chip Stock Investor.

Episode 61: Qualcomm vs. Apple Stock -- 2 New Chips Attack the Big Laptop Market
Qualcomm is a mobile chipmaker and designer that has been trying to break into the laptop market for years. Apple has been a major player in laptops and made significant headway with the introduction of the M-series chip in 2020.
Just recently, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon X Elite laptop chips. The Snapdragon X Elite is based on Arm architecture and will give x86 chip makers Intel and AMD, and maybe even Apple (?) a run for their money.
It remains to be seen whether Qualcomm will be successful in its attempt to enter the laptop market. However, the Snapdragon X Elite platform is a significant improvement over Qualcomm's previous efforts, and it could give Qualcomm a competitive edge.
Meanwhile, Apple just front-ran Qualcomm with the quick announcement and availability of MacBooks powered by the M3 chips.
The competition between these two companies could lead to more innovation in the laptop market, as both try to develop the best possible products as far as power-to-performance goes.
Which stock is a better buy in this important area of the semiconductor race? Chip Stock Investor breaks it down in this episode, along with a brief history of the x86 vs. Arm laptop chip battle in recent decades.

Episode 60: Fortinet Stock Disaster -- Will A New Cybersecurity Service Jumpstart Growth?
Fortinet (FTNT) stock tanked AGAIN on a miss in billings last quarter, and a less than rosy outlook through the first half of 2024 didn’t. Does that mean Chip Stock Investor is done with Fortinet stock, one of our top cybersecurity positions?
Not necessarily. The company’s earnings call shed some light on the business strategy going forward that has stopped us from hitting the “sell” button. We will discuss why in this episode of Chip Stock Investor, and whether we’re buying more or not of this top cybersecurity stock.

Episode 59: Is the Bear Market Really Over? Best Ultra-Long-Term Stocks to Buy Now
Many stocks, especially large- and mega-caps, have performed incredibly well in 2023. It would seem the bear market is a distant memory. But that’s not the case for everyone. Many companies, especially smaller ones, are still down significantly from highs, and catching a fresh wave of pessimism from investors in recent weeks.
Chip Stock Investor takes a break from semiconductors in this video to discuss what a bear market is, what causes them, and when new bull markets begin. They also discuss some of the backdrop that has caused so much investor pain going on year three, and the composition of some of their “core portfolio holdings” that they plan on holding indefinitely.

Episode 58: A New Semiconductor Recession? Onsemi, Aehr Test Systems, and Lattice Semiconductor Stocks Plummet
The end of October served up a nasty shock to some semiconductor stock investors. As interest rates rise and electric vehicles (EVs) become less affordable to finance, some demand is weakening and throttling growth prospects. Onsemi (ON) confirmed as much in its Q3 2023 earnings update, sending its shares (and those of Aehr Test Systems (AEHR), which derives most of its revenue from Onsemi) down by some 20% in a day.
The market wasn’t much happier with Lattice Semiconductor (LSCC), which also counts industrial and automotive markets as top customers. It had another strong showing in Q3, but it's outlook is also cloudy. The stock has crashed from all-time highs in recent weeks.
Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss these three top stocks, and whether the drop is a buying opportunity. Besides a general market overview, they also provide a fair value estimate using a discounted cash flow model, and how they’re handling their own small positions in Onsemi, Aehr Test Systems, and Lattice Semiconductor.

Episode 57: The “Infinitely Scalable” Business Model, and Are Semiconductors Really the “New Oil”?
Investors often talk about the beauty of software businesses being “infinitely scalable,” and why software stocks have greater potential than the “new oil” semiconductor industry.
However, past results suggest something very different. The so-called commodity semiconductor industry is greatly outperforming software. Why? Is software really infinitely scalable? And are chips really the new oil?
Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss this effect, the importance of understanding how industries are structured, and the business model of the best stocks to focus for the decade ahead.

Episode 56: 1 Top Chip Stock Making Waves In Healthcare and Drug Discovery (CDNS)
In this episode of Chip Stock Investor, Nick and Kasey review another stellar quarter from EDA (electronic design automation) software company Cadence Design Systems (CDNS). Some headlines have suggested the company is suffering from a weak semiconductor industry, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Cadence and its EDA peers benefit from increased R&D as chip and computing system designs get more complex. Now Cadence is betting on a similar dynamic playing out among big pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Cadence is in the early stages of making its OpenEye Scientific acquisition (over the summer of 2022) a giant in computing power for drug discovery, development, and optimization. Similar trends in chip and AI could help propel this new market for Cadence higher as well.
Finally, Nick and Kasey discuss valuation, and assumptions the market may have for Cadence stock. There’s no denying shares trade for a very high premium, so they discuss how investors may choose to approach this top chip stock if they don’t already own it.

Episode 55: Is Intuitive Surgical Stock Sunk Because of Ozempic and GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs?
Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) is one of our favorite “forever stocks” at Chip Stock Investor, best known for its Da Vinci robotic surgical system. The company's stock has been a strong performer over the long term, but it has recently come under pressure due to the growing popularity of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) weight-loss drugs like Ozempic. GLP-1s are also associated with a number of other health benefits, including a reduced risk of diabetes and heart disease.
It appears the popularity of Ozempic is already having an impact on Intuitive Surgical's business, and some investors worry GLP-1s could lead to a decline in the number of bariatric and related surgeries over time.
However, over the long term, the impact of Ozempic on Intuitive Surgical may not be as important as some fear. Like most things in investing, the impact of a disruptive force like Ozempic on the business world is a complex issue. Nick asks Kasey to weigh in on the matter given her past experience in the operating room.

Episode 54: Are Hopes For An End-of-Year Stock Rally Now Gone? Tesla (TSLA), Lam (LRCX), and Taiwan Semi (TSM)
In this video, we discuss the latest earnings reports from Tesla (TSLA), Lam Research (LRCX), and Taiwan Semi (TSM), and what they mean for a possible end-of-year stock rally.
Tesla's Q3 2023 earnings weren’t great, with revenue and deliveries below expectations. The EV price war is hurting, and even Elon Musk said Cybertruck production is going to hurt. However, the company is still on track to produce 1.8 million vehicles in 2023, and is making progress on its 4680 battery cell production and new factories in Berlin and Texas. Did Tesla really “dig its own grave” as Musk quipped?
Lam Research is expected to recover in 2024, but profit margins could flatline as the company invests in new chip developments. We think LRCX is a moderate buy, and perhaps a better bet on the memory chip market than Micron, given its profitable, repurchasing stock, and pays a 1.3% a year dividend yield. But investors may need to endure some hurdles.
TSM's CEO sees the return to industry growth in Q4 2023, driven by the continued strong ramp of its 3-nanometer technology. However, inventory digestion is expected to continue due to the persistent weaker overall macroeconomic conditions, slow demand recovery in China, and ongoing weakness in PC and smartphone sales. Is it time to buy the world’s largest and most advanced chip manufacturer?
Overall, we are cautiously optimistic about the end-of-year stock rally, in spite of surging interest rates. Tesla, Lam Research, and Taiwan Semi are all well-positioned to benefit from the long-term growth of the semiconductor industry. However, investors should be aware of the potential risks, and invest accordingly. Tune in for this important episode of Chip Stock Investor!

Episode 53: Are ASML’s Days of Lithography Dominance Coming to An End? ASML and Canon Stock Analysis
ASML has a stranglehold (but not a total monopoly) on lithography equipment for semiconductor manufacturing. Japanese conglomerate Canon (CAJPY) is doubling down on competing advanced chipmaking equipment it originally acquired in 2014, and recently announced a new breakthrough it thinks could compete with ASML’s most advanced machines. Canon certainly wants to be more than a PR-driven player in this department, but ASML’s roots are deep in the chip supply chain.
In this video, Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss aspects of lithography that make ASML special, but how Canon’s nanoimprint lithography (NIL) machines could make some headway in the years to come. They also discuss how they’re handling ASML stock, given its elevated valuation and new risks that could emerge for the business.

Episode 52: Aehr Test Systems Warning to the EV Industry, and Taiwan Semi’s Poor Stock Performance
Aehr Test Systems is a hyper-growth small-cap stock, but its huge run up in the last year has sent the valuation sky-high. Investors are split on the merits of buying now. In light of this, CEO Gayn Erickson dropped some highly useful data regarding the EV industry during the last earnings update. Nick and Kasey discuss what they're doing regarding AEHR stock right now after selling for a tidy profit a few months ago.
Chip foundry powerhouse Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) reported September sales, and it's indicating Q3 2023 earnings could be ugly. Nevertheless, AI and other chip needs should push the company back into growth mode. But when? Chip Stock Investor mulls over reasons TSM could be a buy now, and why some investors might want to hold tight.

Episode 51: 3 Stocks We're Buying In October 2023 (AMAT, CRM, CROX)
It’s been a wild couple of months, with plenty of bad news weighing down the stock market: rising interest rates, political discord and dysfunction, renewed calls for a coming recession, and war.
But deals can still be found for investors with a long-term mindset, and oftentimes it’s easiest to find deals among common business names -- perhaps ones you already own.
In this month’s “shallow dive” of top stocks, Nick and Kasey discuss three stocks they are definitely buying more of, why, and possible risks for each of them.

Episode 50: 1 Cheap Chip Stock For October 2023 (Tower Semi), and How to Invest In The Sphere Las Vegas (SPHR)
In the last Chip Stock Investor video, we discussed two cheap small-cap chip stocks we're watching closely in the coming months. This time we're adding small chip manufacturer Tower Semiconductor (TSEM) to that list. Nick and Kasey discuss what has happened since Intel's (INTC) failed acquisition of Tower, why it could be a great value stock right now, and what will move them off the sideline and buy the stock.
In keeping with the small-cap stock theme, Chip Stock Investor next discusses The Sphere. The next-gen tech property in Las Vegas recently opened with a U2 concert, and early reviews show this could be the future of entertainment venues. Nevertheless, Nick and Kasey dug up some particular financial risks investors should be aware of with investing in Sphere Entertainment (SPHR), the holding company for The Sphere Las Vegas, and its ties to an older sports and media empire.

Episode 49: Photronics (PLAB) and Amkor (AMKR): Two Cheap Chip Stocks to Buy For the End of 2023?
Our last episode about ASML and the semiconductor lithography equipment market briefly discussed the photomask business Photronics (PLAB). Lithography is a critical step in semiconductor manufacturing, and it can’t be done without photomasks. That’s where Photronics comes in. It’s a small business with a sharp focus, and it’s profitable. Is it a good long-term buy? Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss.
Next up is Amkor (AMKR), an OSAT, or outsourced semiconductor assembly and test company. They package and test semiconductors and computing systems for leading companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor. There has been a steep drop in stock price recently. Why did this happen and is it cheap enough for us to add to our portfolio?

Episode 48: 5 Companies ASML Can’t Live Without
In our last video, we discussed the importance of ASML and the geopolitical risks (U.S. versus China) the company faces in the semiconductor landscape right now. ASML is a VERY important company in the industry, but is it the most important?
ASML does rely on other company collaborators in order to provide the world with the most leading edge chips. Photomasks are an integral part of the manufacturing process. What is a photomask? What companies provide this equipment? And how can you invest in this part of the semiconductor equipment manufacturing sub-industry?
All this discussed by Nick and Kasey in this episode of Chip Stock Investor!

Episode 47: Everything You Need to Know About ASML Stock Right Now & Is ASML Stock A Top Buy Right Now?
ASML, the world's leading semiconductor lithography machine maker, faces serious geopolitical risks. Things could get even more complicated in 2024. In this video, Nick and Kasey discuss the biggest risk of all: new restrictions on the export of immersion DUV equipment to China, which could join the list of already restricted EUV equipment.
These export restrictions, which will go into effect on January 1, 2024, could have a major impact on ASML's business. China is a key market for the company, and the new restrictions could make it difficult for ASML to sell its workhorse products to Chinese customers. It will need to file for an export license with the Dutch government.
In this video, Nick and Kasey delve into the geopolitical factors behind these risks for ASML. They also discuss how ASML is responding, and what it means for investors in the company.

Episode 46: Enphase (ENPH) Stock Collapses -- Time to Buy? Buffett's Power Play, & Albemarle's (ALB) Lithium Bet
In this episode of Chip Stock Investor, Nick and Kasey first talk about their long-held Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) stock that may not sound like an exciting energy play. Indeed, Apple (AAPL) comprises nearly half of Warren Buffet's stock portfolio. However, Buffett's investment conglomerate has enjoyed ongoing growth, in part, driven by it’s subsidiary energy businesses -- including measured bets on renewables like natural gas and hydrogen.
Albemarle has been our favorite pick in lithium mining and with their proposal to Liontown Resources, could become even more of a Lithium giant. Why has the stock taken such a beating? Will the lithium market improve, and what bearing do commodity prices have on Albemarle?
Enphase is a leading provider of microinverters, which are devices that convert solar energy into electricity usable in the home. It's been expanding into more of a platform, with energy storage batteries, EV chargers, and solar system management software now available. We recently made a small purchase of Enphase stock in August. Since then, shares have continued to drop. Why? And what is the future growth opportunity for Enphase?

Episode 44: Investing In China's Chip Manufacturing, Global Foundries' $4B Expansion, and ONTO's AI Customer
GlobalFoundries (GFS) just opened their new $4 billion expansion facility in Singapore to address future semiconductor demand. The company has weathered the chip downturn in the recent year and is hoping for a rebound. What does this news update tell us about the financial state of GlobalFoundries?
Semiconductor manufacturing equipment company Onto Innovation (ONTO) had some updates of their own in the past weeks. They said that they completed an order of over $100 million for its Dragonfly G3 equipment, far more than previously reported, with more orders forthcoming that should last into the second half of 2024. Does this make this small-cap stock a buy?
And Chip Stock Investor makes its first review of ACM Research (ACMR), which is expected to have one of the highest percentage growth rates in the chip world over the next 3 to 5 years. What does the company make? Who are its customers in China, and who are the competitors? And is this seemingly cheap stock a buy now?
All this hashed out on the latest episode of Chip Stock Investor.

Episode 43: Warren Buffett’s Bad Tech Stock Pick (HPE), and PureStorage Keeps Growing Where Others Are Declining
Warren Buffet’s tech stock pick of HP (HPQ) seemed like it was a good play on the consumer tech market when we all were buying PC’s and printers while working from home in 2020 and 2021. The party looked like it may never end with workers fighting to keep the work-from-home hoorah alive.
Fast forward to 2023 and many workers are back in office, at least part-time, and we are all spending a whole lot less on electronics. What would have been the better buy? Enter HPE, Hewlett Packard Enterprise. We take a look at how this server company has been, and could continue, to be the better play for the long term.
Also, Oracle’s Larry Ellison said this week that Berkshire Hathaway Energy is transitioning more work to Oracle Cloud, illustrating the long runway of growth still ahead for the industry.
And speaking of the cloud, Pure Storage provides data storage for businesses. But unlike the old hard disk drives of old, this company provides all-flash array systems that are faster, smaller, and more durable. How does Pure Store out-play the competition?

Episode 42: 3 Top Software Stocks That Can Thrive In the New Generative AI Computing Age
Salesforce, ServiceNow, and UiPath are cloud-based software service providers that help businesses get more efficient. Each has had bumps in the road during the bear market last year, but are things starting to turn around for the better?
Salesforce has right sized its expenses and is focused on profitable growth and share buybacks. It is using AI to help customers get the most out of their customer data.
ServiceNow has remained a strong business performer, but the stock price dipped last year anyways. Recently, ServiceNow has said it will use Nvidia's AI and traing software, and in turn Nvidia will use ServiceNow to supercharge their research and design work.
UiPath recently announced a shuffle in the C-Suite, with Co-Founder and Co-CEO Daniel Dines moving to the role of Chief Innovation officer. Google Cloud's former President is now at the helm. The company is focused on using AI to help businesses automate processes and get more profitable.
Chip Stock Investor explains how this year's explosion in AI chip sales could eventually trickle down to better results for these three and other software companies in 2024. Nick and Kasey also discuss how they would go about purchasing shares of Salesforce, ServiceNow, and UiPath in this software stock edition of Chip Stock Investor.

Qualcomm Update: Did China & Huawei Just Force Qualcomm (QCOM) and Apple (AAPL) Into A Chip Deal? 5G Stock Analysis
Qualcomm and Apple just announced that they have extended their multi-year agreement for Qualcomm to supply 5G modem-RF systems to Apple for future iPhones. The new agreement covers the supply of Snapdragon 5G modem-RF systems for products that will be released in 2024, 2025, and 2026.
This agreement is a significant development for both companies. For Qualcomm, it means that it will continue to be a supplier of 5G modems for Apple's most popular product. This is a major win for Qualcomm, as it validates its technology in the 5G market.
For Apple, this agreement means that it will continue to have access to Qualcomm's leading 5G modem technology. This will help Apple products offer the best possible 5G performance and experience for its customers, even as it reportedly continues working on its own 5G modem chipsets.
The two companies have had a long and contentious history, but perhaps they're working to mend fences. It's undoubtedly no coincidence that this deal was inked right after the recent pressure placed on the companies from Huawei, with its release of the Mate 60 Pro, and China's new restriction on government employees' use of the iPhone.

Episode 41: Is Qualcomm Stock Sunk Now That Huawei Has Its Own Advanced Smartphone Chips?
More big semiconductor news this week as investors mull the implications of Huawei’s advanced smartphone chip. Some believe Qualcomm is in line to lose out on billions of dollars in business. And that might be a fair assessment, since China accounts for over 60% of the mobile chip company’s sales. However, there’s more to the story.
Chip Stock Investor delves into some important parts of Qualcomm’s business model to ascertain how much it could lose from Huawei, and if China’s aspirations for semiconductor self-sufficiency is the real deal.
Don’t miss part one of this video, which discusses implications for Huawei’s breakthrough innovation on top semiconductor manufacturing equipment company ASML Holding.
