Her cultural background has played a major role in the way she approaches storytelling and filmmaking. Ever since she was a little girl she remembers writing stories and poems; however, while growing up filmmaking was not an encouraged career. Filmmaking gave her happiness though and she believed that she had no other option but to follow her passion and become a storyteller. She pursued her dream and graduated from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles with an MFA in Screenwriting in 2017.Culture continues to play a large role in Giovanna’s filmmaking career. Giovanna likes to call her genre magical realism. In this, she explores the human condition and the adversity that can be seen in the world. She hopes that through her films, people can feel empathy or connect with the struggles faced by the main character. In her films, she likes to blend the rawness of humanity with fantasy or magic. Her hope is that through her films she can give other the emotional outlet that she felt when she watched some of her favorite movies, such as Blue Jasmine, growing up.Since beginning her career, Giovanna has been involved in numerous film and new media projects, both on her own and in collaboration with others. Hello listeners! We're back another week and this time we had a conversation with Mark Halvorson!Mark is a computer hardware & software design engineer by trade, and an entrepreneur. He just started his third business called OkWhereSanDiego.com which helps native San Diegans, and visitors explore San Diego. It’s a database of things to do, but with each experience it provides all the needed info so there is nothing left to do but to just go have fun.He’s also a Renaissance Man who has been able to put in his 10,000 hours in variety of areas that are all converging at this moment of his life and making his next venture possible.He is in the process of writing a book called “The Badass 21st Century Man Handbook.” This book is the first of it’s kind. It helps men drop the straightjacket all men wear and helps them finish the job of becoming whole and complete men, who can thrive here in the 21st century where the rules have changed.Listeners, this conversation with Mark happened outside of the coffee shop because there was a lot of music and chatter, so you will hear this time some outside noises like cars, trucks and buses driving by.Content warning ahead, if you have the little ones in the car, please be mindful Mark and I talked a lot about human sexuality and he explained this fascinating method he came up with of identifying human identity. I first met Mark at my Toastmasters group and when he first showed me this method, I figured it was an important resource to share as support for the LGBTQ community in advocacy to end the intolerance they constantly with, as well as support social equity for everyone. I want to highlight that Mark’s hand exercise is simply to help us understand other humans and prevent our own internal questioning about their identity. They share womxn’s stories through interviews in order to 1.) advance womxn 2.) create community and 3.) deconstruct societal expectations.Lauren is the co-creator of There’s Room For All of Us Here, a documentary that explores the diverse experience of being a womxn and an artist in 2017. The voices of womxn creatives must be documented and uplifted. The film is meant to inspire womxn, especially womxn of color. They dive into intersectionality and how womxn's many identities, mental health, and environment affect the creation of art in the present day. She has spent the better part of her adult life trying to understand her cultural identity and in doing so, she has uncovered how cycles of emotional and physical abuse within our family lines can have a significant impact on how future generations can continue the cycle or break it. She is currently trying to raise awareness within the Latinx community about a more conscious way of parenting that starts as early as the birth. Ruben started off his career as a musical performer and songwriter.Ruben emerged into the business side of the music industry by sphere-heading the independent record label RESCUE RECORDS for rock band P.O.D., where he learned all aspects of the record industry.In 2010 “Connected with Ruben Torres” was launched, which started the hype of directing, producing and shooting music videos and hosting an online cultural and lifestyle YOUTUBE TV show in which he has interviews with the Likes of Cheech Marin and clips with Musicians like P.O.D. and Snoop Dogg.Realizing the attention and responsibility with branding a name within the community Ruben used his influence to help launch community charity events as well as his international Christmas-time toy drive “Love Thy Neighbor” for kids and families in Tijuana Mexico. Hello listeners! We are back with a new episode and this time we talked to Jo Luehmann!Jo is a piece of the Luehmann Circus, Jo, is one of the members of the Luehmann Circus. They are a family of improving Christians. What that means is that they love God a lot, but they also have a lot of issues with Him and His church, and they are ok with that.After Jo and her husband worked hard for years to build up a church, they did “whatever it took” and learned whatever they needed to learn to make this church “successful” they started to feel fake; they started to feel what they were doing was simply not consistent one with what they believed.After a while, they gave into the feelings of “rebellion”, and they thought that if “submission” and maintaining the status quo made them feel like clowns playing a game of pretend, then they were going to be rebels. They needed to leave and walk towards God knows where, to figure out God knows what. They needed to become wanderers with more uncertainty than certainty, backpackers of faith who had no idea where they would lay their head for the season to come. They left in search of God and freedom and identity and destiny and a new life. They left knowing very little and with more questions than answers.After they left the church they helped plant, the Luehmann's had to stand alone with no community and no actual direction, they discovered that they had permission to question everything. They were allowed now to be uncertain about all the things they had held as final truths because they realized nothing really was.And this is how Jo welcomes you to their Circus. As a recovering procrastinator, I have researched many ways of goal setting and I have found a formula that works for me.First, we start with a 2017 review. We must acknowledge the year and be prepared to let it go.If you were to name 2017. What would that name be?2017 Review:What did you accomplish?What can you celebrate?What lessons did you learn? If you can categorize them, that’s greatWhat meaningful connections did you make that helped you reach your goals?What habits did you create or cultivate that help you spark your mind and body?What are you excited to carry over from 2017 to 2018?Then we set our intentions for each of the categories of our life wheel:RelationshipsFamilyPersonal PassionsSpiritualHealthBusiness / CareerNow we're ready to set our 2018 goals. We're going to use the S.M.A.R.T. method:S - SPECIFIC OR SIGNIFICANTAs many details as possible. What is it that you really want and why? For example, some people say go to the gym. Okay, a specific goal would be go to the gym 3x per week before work for 1 hour each time for the rest of the year.M - MEASURABLE OR MEANINGFULThis is the how. How will I know I completed the goal? How much change do I need to create in my life to make this happen? In the example we’re using, we can measure our small accomplishments each week, each month and ultimately by the year. We can establish parameters also, life happens. Using the gym example, you can say that you’re allowed to miss 2 workouts per month.A - ATTAINABLE OR ACTIONABLEIs this possible? Is it a reasonable stretch? Am I setting myself up for success?R - RELEVANT OR REWARDINGIs this goal meaningful to me? Is this complimenting a slice of my life wheel? Is succeeding at this goal make me feel whole? Is this going to prevent me from achieving a more important goal? Martha first became a caregiver to her great aunt who was 93 and had Dementia. With little knowledge on how to be a Caregiver, Martha reached out to Southern Caregiver Resource Center and became a client they taught her the importance of self-care and knowing what the resources are. Martha now teaches classes and puts together workshops and conferences throughout San Diego County with the hopes of empowering caregivers everywhere to let them know that they don’t have to do this alone. That there is a network of care that is out there for you and you can access it and learn from others who are in the same situation.This episode is relevant to this Holiday season because a lot of us are caregivers without realizing it. While working for the San Diego International Airport Art Program she curated over eighty exhibitions with some of San Diego’s best museums, artists and galleries; as well as a fantastic roster of talent for its performing arts series. She currently serves on the board of the San Diego Art Institute and has previously served as VP of the Alliance Française de San Diego, VP of the San Diego REPertory Theatre, President of the National City Public Art Committee and Vice Chair on the Port of San Diego’s Public Art Committee. Susanna is a magna cum laude graduate of San Diego State University where she majored in Humanities, and minored in French. She holds a Professional Certificate in The Cycle: Management of Successful Arts and Cultural Organizations from the Devos Institute of Arts Management, University of Maryland; a Professional Certificate in Business for Arts and Nonprofit Arts Organizations from University of San Diego; a Certificate in Photography: Images and Techniques from University of California, San Diego; studied Art History at the Université Paris Sorbonne (Paris IV); and History of Video Art at the École du Louvre in Paris, France. Her passion for the visual, performing, and culinary arts has taken her to over fifteen countries and inspired her to create an organization that aims to bring people together across different backgrounds, interests and creative professions.We talked about Susanna's childhood between Mexico and San Diego. What it was like to live in a border town, how she travelled abroad since she was young and how discovering other cultures lead her to ultimately do what she does now. Hello listeners, here we are with another episode and this time we had a conversation with Fernando Lopez!Fernando, is a restaurateur and entrepreneur. Alongside his three siblings, he owns LA’s iconic Guelaguetza restaurant and in 2014 branded and launched the delicious michelada mix, I Love Micheladas. The mix is available online and in over 150 retailers throughout the US and has been covered nationally by Vice, Los Angeles Magazine, GQ, Urban Daddy, and the LA Times.Fernando was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, and migrated to the US with his family in 1994. His family opened Guelaguetza restaurant and by the age of 12, Fernando was doing produce purchasing every week, and eventually worked most of the positions within the restaurant. Fernando graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a focus in Business Management, Economics, and Marketing in 2009.In 2014 Fernando was chosen as one of Zagat's 30 under 30 in Los Angeles. Fernando also sits on the Regional Leadership Board for KPCC, the NPR station with the most growth in the Latino market nationwide, where he’s been serving for 2 years now and helping guide and shape the future of the station and the region. Hello listeners, during this episode we have a conversation with Fernando Laposse.Fernando is a London based Mexican designer with a BA in product design from Central Saint Martins. He was born in Paris, France and his work is deeply rooted in material experimentation and craft with a great emphasis on self-production and the DIY culture. Fernando strives to transform materials which are cheap, readily available, and often waste or perishable matter, enabling him to make crossovers between product design and gastronomy. His projects aim to raise questions regarding whole system thinking, ephemerality, patterns of consumption and the politics of food production through the creation of design objects, performances, and videos.Totomoxtle is a project inspired by the relationship of Mexico with its maize by creating a surfacing material from naturally coloured, native corn husks. Hello listeners! This week we had a conversation with Gloria Lucas, also known as Nalgona Positivity Pride.Gloria is a Xicana womxn and the person behind Nalgona Positivity Pride. Straight from the Inland Empire, the DIY punk community in Riverside taught her to organize and since the age of 18 she has helped form Ladyfest IE, IE Riot Grrrls, and Women of Color for Decolonization. In 2014, she founded Nalgona Positivity Pride from years of dealing with the violent lack of women of color representation in the eating disorder awareness community. Like the chingona womxn of color that came before, she creates spaces for marginalized folks to support each other and heal from the trauma of colonialism, eurocentric beauty ideals and disordered eating in communities of color. She has lectured across the nation in different universities and community organizations. Gloria’s work has been featured at the Huffington Post, MiTú , Bitch Magazine, and The Body is not an Apology. Her most recent project is Sage & Spoon an online support group for indigenous people and people of color with eating problems. Rosalva Vasquez) had the need to heal her own pain after receiving her first baby Noel Vasquez diagnosis with HIV when he received a transfusion with tainted blood.
