EP-229 Markelle Fultz IG Gaff, Lavar Ball’s Likability & Fallout From Bulls Trading Jimmy Butler

Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy put a bow on the end of the NBA season by dishing about #1 overall pick Markelle Fultz’s Instagram gaff at the NBA Draft where his sponsored post for Tissot forgot to change the text. Is this a bad thing for Fultz or did it end up being a victory as the post got significantly more awareness than if he did things correctly? They also talk about Lavar Ball’s likability and if he is growing on them. He very much mimics an old school WWE manager who is always hyping up the talent. Is this the real Lavar or a show? They end the show by talking about the fallout from the Bulls trading Jimmy Butler. How can the team market a rebuilding team to disgruntled fans?In each episode of The Sports Marketing Huddle, CEO of BOLD Worldwide Brian Cristiano, and Founder of Cress Media & Bacon Sports Rob Cressy give a forward-thinking perspective about some of the hottest topics in the world of sports marketing and then give you actionable advice on how you can implement it into your business. Our goal of the podcast is to create the best sports marketing podcast and take The Sports Marketing Huddle up to #1 on iTunes New & Noteworthy. EP-218 How To Market Around The Cavs vs Warriors NBA Finals

The NBA Finals are not yet set but there’s a strong indication that it’s going to be the Cleveland Cavaliers vs Golden State Warriors. This will be the third time in as many years that these teams have squared off in the NBA Finals. EP-213 Nike’s 2 Hour Marathon Attempt Falls Short But Still Wins

Nike’s attempt to break the 2-hour marathon fell just short, as Eliud Kipchoge finished at 2:00:25 (which is a 4:35.5 mile.) Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman said, “The real purpose of running isn’t to win a race, it’s to test the limits of the human heart.”Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy dish about Nike’s entire campaign surrounding their attempt to break the 2-hour marathon barrier. As impressive as this feat was, what real impact will this have on the running community? Was this campaign only targeting the elite runners or is there a trickle down effect to the more general running community? As part of their content creation efforts, what did W+K do to try and tell this story? Is this the end of the 2-hour marathon story or just the beginning? In each episode of The Sports Marketing Huddle, CEO of BOLD Worldwide Brian Cristiano, and Founder of Cress Media & Bacon Sports Rob Cressy give a forward-thinking perspective about some of the hottest topics in the world of sports marketing and then give you actionable advice on how you can implement it into your business. Our goal of the podcast is to create the best sports marketing podcast and take The Sports Marketing Huddle up to #1 on iTunes New & Noteworthy. Pete Tosches, SVP of Corporate Communication at ServiceMaster joins Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy to give us a peek under the hood of how they executed the campaign and the thought process surrounding it. How did the idea start, did they think they’d have to pay the head coach’s fine, sponsoring the Game 4 towels, to the biggest lessons they learned from it. This campaign ended up getting over 100 million media impressions so it’s a great case study for other brands on how to wisely approach generating awareness and fan engagement. EP-209 Earth to LaVar Ball: Don’t Put The Cart Before The Horse

LaVar Ball is trying to get a billion dollar deal for his Big Baller Brand and right now it’s not going so hot. Nike, Under Armour, and Adidas all said they are not interested in Lonzo Ball. Nike consultant George Raveling called LaVar “the worst thing to happen to basketball in the last hundred years.”Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy try and give some advice to LaVar Ball. If he brought us on board how would we try and help him right this ship? The biggest problem he’s running into is that he’s putting the Big Baller Brand before the success of Lonzo Ball. The model he is trying to fix isn’t broken. There is no incentive for the top brands to create a partnership deal where they promote Big Baller Brand. If he wanted to create a billion dollar disruptive brand, how would he need to do it? With all the fanfare comes plenty of marketing opportunities. Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy dish about the numerous ways in which marketing was present at the NFL Draft. What do we make of top overall pick Myles Garrett choosing to forego being at the draft to be home instead? What about the trend of custom suit jacket liners, some of which were sponsored by brands (like Jack Links)? Will we continue to see players bring props with them on stage when they are drafted? This was not the first time this season that the team, who is the sixth highest valued NBA franchise but was one of three teams to lose money last season, sold tickets on the platform. Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy dish about if sports teams selling tickets on Groupon is a good thing? Considering the NBA playoffs are the pinnacle of a team's journey towards potentially winning an NBA title, why are the Clippers having to resort to this marketing tactic? We don’t need another social media network that doesn’t solve a problem or improve anything. Sure it’s nice that it is targeting the baseball only niche, but the problem they are trying to solve of seeing more content from the players you want just isn’t going to happen. EP-201 Toasted Grasshoppers Blowing Up In Seattle

Toasted grasshoppers are all the rage right now at the Seattle Mariners Safeco Field. So far this year they’ve sold over 18,000 grasshoppers at the Poquitos concession stand (at $4 for a four-ounce cup), which was added as part of the Mariners strategy to add more of a local flair to their concessions. Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy dish about why fans love the toasted grasshoppers. Is it for the taste or is it the experience? For as hot as the toasted grasshoppers are selling, the Mariners are majorly failing by limiting sales to just 312 orders per game. Why would they do that and limit the amount of people who can have a positive brand experience? What would we do to amplify the toasted grasshoppers experience? Should other teams and brands try and create their own version of toasted grasshoppers? In each episode of The Sports Marketing Huddle, CEO of BOLD Worldwide Brian Cristiano, and Founder of Cress Media & Bacon Sports Rob Cressy give a forward-thinking perspective about some of the hottest topics in the world of sports marketing and then give you actionable advice on how you can implement it into your business. Our goal of the podcast is to create the best sports marketing podcast and take The Sports Marketing Huddle up to #1 on iTunes New & Noteworthy. EP-200 The Good & Bad From Mizuno’s Rent A Glove Experience

Mizuno just created their Mizuno Experience Center at Atlanta Braves Sunburst stadium where, among other things, fans can rent a glove for a game and test it for 48 hours. If they like it, their credit card is charged, otherwise they return it free of charge. Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy dish about why they love this level of fan engagement, especially within the highly targeted audience Mizuno is looking to reach. At the Experience Center fans can also choose from 125 Mizuno bats to demo, play around at a golf swing lab and running lab, a volleyball wall, and cleat wall. Unfortunately, not everything Mizuno did was perfect. One area in which Mizuno failed at is not having a website built out for this and/or having a big social presence. This lack of complete digital execution misses huge opportunities where they could engage their audience, increase their awareness, and create positive brand interactions. The NHL playoffs just started and with it comes a journey for both the players and fans to win the greatest trophy in all of professional sports, the Stanley Cup. Because of the cache of Lord Stanley, the NHL has successfully engaged fans with its #becauseitsthecup and #myplayoffsmoment hashtags, getting them to send in photos and videos of them sharing their experience. What can teams do to encourage fans to send in more videos? On the other side of the pond, the NBA playoffs are set to start this weekend and they are in a different scenario than the NHL thanks to appealing to a larger, non-niche audience. It’s much easier for a casual fan to watch LeBron James or Steph Curry than it is Sidney Crosby or Patrick Kane. What can the NBA do to generate a similar level of fanaticism that the NHL has with #becauseitsthecup? Lastly, what can workplaces do to jump on the bandwagon of both these playoffs and encourage participation for their employees? In each episode of The Sports Marketing Huddle, CEO of BOLD Worldwide Brian Cristiano, and Founder of Cress Media & Bacon Sports Rob Cressy give a forward-thinking perspective about some of the hottest topics in the world of sports marketing and then give you actionable advice on how you can implement it into your business. Our goal of the podcast is to create the best sports marketing podcast and take The Sports Marketing Huddle up to #1 on iTunes New & Noteworthy. The world of sports is on fire right now, from MLB Opening Day, the thrilling finish to The Masters, to March Madness concluding. Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy put a bow on these three topics as they dish about how Pizza Hut was the runaway winner of March Adsanity, blowing away the competition in terms of engagement, how The Masters missed a gigantic opportunity by not allowing cell phones to capture one of the most exciting endings ever, and how Cubs fans are brimming with excitement at their home opener where they will raise their Championship flags, something that MLB majorly dropped the ball on.In each episode of The Sports Marketing Huddle, CEO of BOLD Worldwide Brian Cristiano, and Founder of Cress Media & Bacon Sports Rob Cressy give a forward-thinking perspective about some of the hottest topics in the world of sports marketing and then give you actionable advice on how you can implement it into your business. Our goal of the podcast is to create the best sports marketing podcast and take The Sports Marketing Huddle up to #1 on iTunes New & Noteworthy. EP-194 How Can MLB Improve Their Marketing?

Gabe Lacques, Baseball Editor at USA Today, joins Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy to talk about how Major League Baseball can improve their marketing. Instead of opening up the season in Wrigley, where all eyes would have been on celebrating the Cubs winning their first World Series in over 100 years, it kicked off in Tampa with a Rays vs Yankees game to little fanfare. Did no one at MLB realize that the Cubs are the hottest thing in baseball? What can MLB do to appeal to a younger generation? EP-193 When Will The Masters Grow Up?

Hello Friends. The Masters is a tradition unlike any other. Steeped in a rich history of golf’s elite, it is seen as THE number one golf tournament. As much as I am a fan of The Masters, they are doing themselves no favors by refusing to adapt to the current digital era. Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy dish about why The Masters needs to get with the times. From their no cell phones, cameras, or beepers (yes, beepers) policy, to not broadcasting the entire tournament on TV. The Masters is a prime example of why golf’s ratings and fandom have declined. “The good old boys” are only going to be around for so long, so The Masters needs to make some changes and start appealing to a younger generation. At the end Brian and Rob give actionable advice on what you can implement into your business from the way The Masters markets themselves. To celebrate Opening Day, Major League Baseball and New Era ran their #CapsOn campaign which encouraged fans to take pictures of themselves wearing hats. Because of the previous success, this is the second consecutive year that this campaign has run. Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy dish about why they dig this idea and the social engagement behind it. How will New Era be using celebrities and influencers to try and spread the message? What could New Era be doing better to engage each individual fan who uses the #CapsOn hashtag? At the end Brian and Rob give actionable advice on what you can implement in your business from this campaign. EP-191 Pulling A Costanza By Doing The Opposite

EP-191 Pulling A Costanza By Doing The Opposite

In an episode of Seinfeld George Costanza says, “My life is the opposite of everything I want it to be. Every instinct I have, in every area of life, be it something to wear, something to eat...Its all been wrong.” This compels him to do the complete opposite, with the logic that the opposite would have to be right if the way he’s doing things is currently wrong. Because of this episode of Seinfeld, Rob Cressy has implemented something in his life called “Pulling a Costanza” where he does the complete opposite of his normal routine. The goal of “Pulling a Costanza” is to experience life differently. To have a different energy for the day and do so with a smile and an open mind. When you do a new set of possibilities start to arise. Brian Cristiano also shares his version of “Pulling a Costanza” about how he challenged himself to walk home differently every day for 30 days to see what would happen. Both of these stories should inspire you to have an open mind, not be afraid of doing something different, and to find ways to bring new positive experiences to your life.In each episode of The Sports Marketing Huddle, CEO of BOLD Worldwide Brian Cristiano, and Founder of Cress Media & Bacon Sports Rob Cressy give a forward-thinking perspective about some of the hottest topics in the world of sports marketing and then give you actionable advice on how you can implement it into your business. Our goal of the podcast is to create the best sports marketing podcast and take The Sports Marketing Huddle up to #1 on iTunes New & Noteworthy. EP-190 Launch of Bleacher Boys & Podcast Ad Execution

Last week Bacon Sports launched their first sponsored podcast, the Bleacher Boys, a Chicago Cubs podcast. In this episode Rob Cressy dish with Brian Cristiano on the process of how the podcast was launched, why Wrigleyville Sports was the ideal sponsor, and what can be done to help improve conversations of the advertising. Pre-roll and mid-roll podcast advertising has the ability to be a very effective form of advertising and increase brand awareness. But what is the best way to actually execute it so that it delivers results? Just read standard ad copy or to dig deeper into the brand to make the content more impactful? At the end Brian and Rob give a call to action to any brand or team who is looking for help with their podcasting. EP-188 How Can Sports Bars Market More Around Sports?

It seems that the majority of times that I go to a sports bar something is off. Either they don’t have the correct sporting events on TV or their social media marketing is overly self promotional and lacks delivering value. Andrew Jaffee, Founder of The Rail, joins Brian Cristiano and Rob Cressy to talk about how sports bars can market themselves more around sports. You’d think that with “sports” in their name that this would be a no brainer, but that’s not the case. How can sports bars better speak the language of sports fans and create a win-win situation for everyone? What about creating reaction videos and more engaging content on social media? What caused Andrew to start the Sports TV Guide and begin his entrepreneurial journey?
