#74: Macro Hacks with Redefining Strength
What are Macros and what do they matter? Well, Tim is now growing “ablets” and I’m finally GAINING weight and getting rid of my dead butt. Tim and I have found out through our own personal experiments the past few months how important counting macros really impacts your diet and fitness goals. It only took us over 50 years of messing around as athletes and docs to get it together, so how did we do it? …Because we hired Redefining Strength to teach us, have us cycle different ratios and find out just HOW MUCH protein we really need to get those guns of steel! It’s true that you can’t exercise your way out of a bad diet. However if you eat healthy but don’t know what ratio of Macros you are needing or getting… you won’t see success in your fitness goals. Back with us this week is Cori Lefkowith, the owner and creator of REDEFINING STRENGTH . We hope you enjoyed the podcast we did with her back on Episode #57- please check that one out first if you haven’t heard it! Cori has trained numerous clients and even the trainers themselves. She and her team know of every diet out there but truly believe through trial and error and coaching that learning how to balance your MACROS is the only way for long lasting success that involves ALL the foods you WANT to eat! Cori’s Bio: Cori Lefkowith is the owner of Redefining Strength. Her company is empowering clients through fitness and nutrition while teaching them to train smarter, not just harder. In our culture of “No pain, no gain” and “more is better,” Redefining Strength is teaching clients a more efficient, intentional way to train to get results. We lead busy lives. Our training routine and diet should fit our schedule and help us create a sustainable lifestyle. #73: Patriots from Pandemics!
The past few years of pandemic laden lockdowns, deaths, regulations and experimental medication controversy seems to have unleashed a fresh wave of American patriotism. Citizens in the US ( and those around the globe) have begun to question the national/international and local narrative. Covid has affected every aspect of people’s lives- kids have been forced out of schools, all of us dealt with massive changes in work/employment, and hello … restrictions on buying toilet paper! Our guest today, Marnie Lynn Boles, is a patriot extraordinaire! She is passionate about making it easy for all of us to unite and get involved! How so? It’s easy at The Patriot Impact! She has helped create a website that makes it easy to find events locally, post upcoming events for Patriots, and ways to get involved from a hometown to national level. Patriot Impact motto: We believe that Americans need to be reminded of what freedoms are in fact their God given unalienable rights here in this country. You need to be reminded what hundreds of thousands of American citizens have laid their lives down for. As Abraham Lincoln said at the Gettysburg Address, we are a, "Government of the people, by the people, for the people". If you are frustrated, you need to get involved in making a positive change in your circle of life. Change starts with you! And so, my fellow Americans: Ask not what your country can do for you– Ask what you can do for your country ~JFK! LINKS: The Patriot Impact: https://thepatriotimpact.com/ Our Advice! #71: Pfizer Study Documents Uncovered!!
Hang on to your seats kids, we are dropping this episode hot! And there is going to be MORE coming your way in the future as Pfizer continues to slowly trickle out their study data on Covid-19 mRNA injections Today we ask: Did Pfizer perform adequate safety testing for its Covid-19 mRNA Vaccine in pre-clinical trials? Not according to today’s guest, Sasha Latypova. She has just published a missive on April 26, 2022 with her findings from reading through the initial release of the first 400 pages released by Pfizer after a FOIA request. She finds that the CDC and FDA lied about the vaccine “staying in the injection site” and that the toxicity of the vaccine’s mRNA active ingredient was never studied! And that is not all! Note: We will link the PDF documents to our website for comprehensive reading. Sasha Latypova is a retired business executive with more than twenty years in pharmaceutical and medical device research and development (R&D) and the data analytics field. She holds an MBA from Dartmouth College, NH. Throughout her career, her primary expertise was innovative technology transfer from academic inventions to commercialization. Her company has worked on things such as improved techniques for data analysis in Oncology and Electrophysiology. She co-owned and was senior executive for several clinical research organizations ( CROs)- pharmaceutical contractors conducting data collection and analysis for the purpose of clinical trial submissions to regulatory authorities such as FDA and others. She has worked on several FDA-industry consortia working on new technologies for improving safety pharmacology assessments. She has also worked as an analytic consultation in pharmaceutical and medical device industry in the areas of econometrics and litigation support. #68: Hormone Secrets
You asked, so we are bringing it! Today is all about hormones- especially those that impact your quality of life, performance and health. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) , specifically questions regarding menopause and testosterone replacement therapies, is one of the most commonly asked questions we get. HRT for menopause has been and still IS a widely debated issue. Will it cause heart disease and cancer or do hormones actually help reduce risk factors and improve quality of life ? Understanding and supplementing women and men with HRT has been something that allopathic physicians struggle with doing well. Dr. Robert Yoho is back as our guest today. He is a retired cosmetic surgeon with a 30 year career that also included prescribing hormones. He is the author of “Hormone Secrets” that explains his experience in using HRT and how it transformed patients’ lives. He believes that HRT is vastly underused, is generally safe when done correctly and that the health and quality of life benefits exceed most of the risks. More about Robert Yoho: Robert Yoho is a retired physician who had a three decade career as a cosmetic surgeon after initially practicing in Emergency Medicine. His generalist training gives him perspective and allows him to avoid favoring any medical specialty. Along with Hormone Secrets , he has also written the Amazon bestselling book, Butchered by Healthcare that has over 100 five-star reviews. He has had little dealings with hospitals, big Pharma, or insurance companies before he wrote his books. No one has ever considered him a “whale” prescriber or device implanter. #66: Butchered By Healthcare
Dr. Robert Yoho is our guest today, a whistleblower and author regarding the fraud that occurs in healthcare. He wrote the Amazon bestselling book, Butchered by Healthcare that has over 100 five-star reviews. He explains how our sadly damaged system fits together and how patients can get around the problems. January 17, 1961 President Eisenhower gave the most pointed warning to the United States. He spoke of the necessity of major industry for maintaining an adequate defense. His warning about the newly coined “military industrial complex” was that it would become such an endless presence that it would require continuous spending and continuous war to maintain it. Much like the military industrial complex, there is a Medical Industrial Complex. Healthcare is the top cause of all our overdue debts and personal bankruptcy. Our medical spending per person is double that of other countries’, but fully half the treatments are ineffective or harmful. The first step to deal with the situation, either as a doctor or a patient, is to learn the truth. More about Robert Yoho: Robert Yoho is a retired physician who spent three decades as a cosmetic surgeon after a career as an emergency physician. His generalist training gives him perspective and allows him to avoid favoring any medical specialty. #63: Fear Is No Excuse: with Eddie Braun
Want to hear from one of the greatest stuntmen of all time sharing his thoughts on “safety”? Tim is man crushing & fanboying out on this week's epic interview with stuntman Eddie Braun. Eddie’s life is an example that “fear is no excuse”. He will be the first to tell you that recklessness is different from planned risk. Doing great things is not necessarily about risk, but having the skills to manage your fears. People are often unable to live their dreams, because they are too busy living their fears. About Eddie Braun: Eddie is not only a stuntman but also a stunt actor and stunt coordinator. His career inspiration and childhood hero was the famous Evil Knievel. In 2016, in full circle fashion, Eddie completed Knievel’s failed attempt and became the only man to ever jump across Idaho’s Snake River Canyon in a rocket. The documentary of his signature stunt has been released on Disney Plus: Stuntman. Eddie is known for endless action credits from the 80’s until now. He has appeared in Dukes of Hazzard, The Fall Guy, Magnum P.I. to films such as The Avengers, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Moneyball, Rush Hour 2. He has doubled for Charlie Sheen, Lee Majors and Chuck Norris and more. #62: Staten Island RINO Hunter- with John Matland
Turning lemons into lemonade is what our guest John Matland has done. Sadly many of you will relate to his story. Like many other healthcare workers across the nation and the world, he experienced job termination during the pandemic. As an imaging technician in a New York hospital, he chose to wait on receiving any Covid vaccines and questioned the reasoning behind selective testing only of nonvaccinated workers. Let’s just say “he didn’t go lightly into the dark night”! John Matland has a vivacious personality and is passionate about making positive changes. He decided to stand up for what he believes in and effect change, one step at a time. He currently is a host on Today’s New Talk (TNT) radio show and has thrown his name into the political ring for NY Congress. That’s right! His story is just beginning- you’re gonna love hearing from him! #60: Compassion & Courage in Covid
Drs. Kirk and Kimberly Milhoan are an amazing physician couple with a unique combination of expertise in Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Anesthesia. They have experienced what happens when speaking out against the status quo on Covid therapeutics , and what that cost is. Kirk tells of how he became subject to investigation by the Hawaii Board of Medicine for a conversation he had regarding Covid therapies. Throughout the pandemic they began to question the evolving push of vaccines over outpatient therapies. Kirk also has concerns with what is happening to children’s cardiac health as a result of using an emergency use injection therapy in our young, with no long term data. They have been actively involved in Global Covid Summit and proponents of the sanctity of the physician-patient relationship, recognizing natural immunity from Covid and avoidance of doing more harm than good with Covid mRNA technologies. Kirk Milhoan has a BA in Biology and Chemistry and a PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology and Pharmacology, focusing on cellular mechanisms of cardiac inflammation, specifically the role of platelet activating factor in activating the myocardial inflammation process. He received his medical degree, Magna Cum Laude, from the Jefferson Medical College of the Thomas Jefferson University. He completed his pediatric residency at David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base and pediatric cardiology fellowship at San Diego Children’s Hospital/UCSD. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology, and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and American Academy of Pediatrics. He served thirteen years in the United States Air Force as a pediatric cardiologist and flight surgeon. Kim is a graduate of Stanford University, with a B.A. in Human Biology, with a concentration in Public Health and Health Administration. She worked as a health care management consultant for American Practice Management before obtaining her medical degree. She completed her anesthesiology residency, as chief resident, at the University of Health Science Center in San Antonio. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology in Anesthesiology and Pediatric Anesthesiology, and a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiology, with a specialty in Pediatric Anesthesia. She and Kirk co-founded For Hearts and Souls, a non-profit specializing in the international care of children with congenital heart disease. Kirk serves as medical director and diagnostic cardiologist for the organization, and they have voluntarily served the needs of tens of thousands of children with heart defects throughout the world. The organization has performed over 700 invasive pediatric cardiac procedures internationally. Kirk is also the Senior Pastor of Calvary Chapel South Maui. He and his wife have treated many patients with COVID-19 through their federally recognized free mobile medical clinic in Maui. #59: The Doctor As Patient: Migraine Warrior
We are long overdue for another Doctor As Patient episode. I decided it would be perfect for me to share my own personal story and journey with migraine. Having been a lifelong migraine patient, it has impacted my life since I was 11 years old. I have tried to never let it define me, but living with a chronic illness certainly controls many aspects of your life. I have tried almost every therapeutic option/treatment and now am blessed to have found a game changing new medication that has given me my life back! Along the way I have also had huge empathy for my migraine patients - we suffer in a way that most people will never understand. I hope you enjoy this brief glimpse into my migraine life. There are many great online resources and support groups that I would recommend. As always -message me with any questions! #57: Redefining Strength
I have a slight obsession with a trainer I follow on Facebook and Instagram. I’ve been following Cori Lefkowith of REDEFINING STRENGTH for years, enjoying her motivational posts and loving her targeted exercises for my troublesome injuries. She has great rehab advice that I have tried and tested on my numerous Ortho injuries. She has helped me when many PT’s couldn’t even crack the mystery. She posted something a few weeks ago that blew my mind: “Most people fail because of how they try to achieve their goals.” She went on to write that the date at which most people completely quit on their New Year’s Resolutions...is…..?? It’s not the Summer...Or a specific holiday or event… It’s not the middle of February which was my guess. It’s JANUARY 19th! (This date is based on a study done of over 800 million people’s activities in 2019) Which led me to thinking and asking WHY do people quit so early? What are the stumbling blocks that cause us to give up? How can physicians and other healthcare experts help motivate their patients or themselves even….to realize their fitness and weight loss goals? Cori oozes with energy and positivity and encouragement. She will tell you, you are NEVER too old, too big, too injured ( insert your excuse) to not achieve your fitness goals! She’s passionate about what she does and has a massive following on FB and IG to show it. Today we brush the surface on common stumbling blocks like how to stay committed to your workout routine. What causes people to burnout or quit? How to get over the motivation hump and what tricks/tips help people stay consistent. And then there’s the four letter D word!!!! #56: Covid and The Law: The Fight Begins
Last week the Supreme Court blocked the OSHA vaccine mandate for large businesses. While this is a huge ruling, how exactly did this overturn and how was it decided? During this pandemic we have seen decisions being made based on doctrine. Do administrative agencies have the authority to implement medical mandates based on their interpretation of science? To help us unpack what happened and where we might be headed with this ruling is our guest, attorney Ryan Heath. He does an amazing job explaining how OSHA had over reached their authority and power as interpreted by the Supreme Court. Remember that currently healthcare facilities that operate under CMS ( Center for Medicare Services) still need to comply with vaccine mandates and this is a completely separate path that will play out differently. Time will tell. Ryan Heath is a licensed Arizona attorney with a background in criminal defense. He is also president and CEO of The Gavel Project, a new nonprofit organization that provides education and support to the public regarding the recent Covid-19 mandates/issues. Its mission is to fight unethical government/employer mandates and protect the freedom of Americans, especially children. #55: Is the Pandemic Over?
Today we talk about Omicron taking over as the dominant strain around the world and the future of Covid. Omicron is much more contagious, seems to be much less dangerous and mitigation strategies have not worked. The world has gone MAD focusing on vaccine status instead of what is happening with infections, illness and hospitalization/deaths. Could Omicron be the golden ticket that is turning this pandemic into an “endemic”? Join our banter! PS: Check out Travis Luttmer at Country Financial (click here) for your insurance needs! #52: Eat Sh$t and Live! With Dr. Hazan
You’ve heard all the jokes- what’s your poo telling you?, eat sh&t and die, you’re full of sh&t. Today we are going in deep and discussing how “eating” poo can actually save people! ( no they don’t really have to eat it, but it makes a great title!) Fecal microbiota transplant ( FMT) aka a stool transplant, is the process of transferring stool from a healthy patient into another individual. Currently in the USA, the only FDA approved use of this treatment is for C. difficile infections. It has been used experimentally to treat other GI diseases such as IBS, colitis, and even some neurological conditions like MS, Parkinsons and even autism. What is even more amazing, is that the 10,000 plus species of microorganisms in the GI tract make up a unique “microbiome” in each individual. There is huge diversity in the gut microbiome depending on diet, genetics, environment and overall health of the individual. Research is exploring the potential curative role of gut bacteria in various diseases. Our guest expert on this subject is Dr. Sabine Hazan, a Gastroenterologist and scientific researcher in the subject of FMT. She launched ProgenaBiome, a genetic sequencing research company dedicated to understanding the gut flora at the clinical level. Her book, “Let’s Talk Sh&t” is a fun, informative read for clinicians to lay people. The first woman ever accepted into the University of Florida as a Clinical Gastroenterology Fellow, Dr. Sabine Hazan is a pioneer in the medical field. Board certified in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Internal Medicine, Dr. Hazan has published articles in numerous prestigious medical journals, including theJournal of Duval County Medical Association and Gastroenterology, and won several awards, such as the Best Fellow Scientific Presentation and Dean’s Research Award awarded by University of Florida. In addition, Dr. Sabine Hazan is an acclaimed speaker and presented symposiums for influential medical organizations like the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Astra Merk, Inc. #50: Non Clinical Careers for Physicians
What CAN a physician do other than prescribe your medications, perform exams on every orifice you have and cut and paste you back together with knives, nukes and robotics? Guess what? There is a whole world of other career options out there for those who are looking for a complete career change or just starting a new side gig. Dr. John Jurica joins us today to give us an overview of the options. I think he must have heard them all! He is a board-certified family physician who began doing nonclinical side jobs early in his career as UM physician advisor and occupational medicine medical director. In 2017, John started producing the weekly Physician Nonclinical Careers Podcast, where he presents interviews with physician entrepreneurs, medical directors, hospital executives, managers, coaches and other experts in physician career transition. His podcast was listed as a Feedspot Top 20 Physicians Podcasts You Must Follow in 2020 and 2021. In 2018, he created the Nonclinical Career Academy MemberClub (nonclinicalphysicians.com/joinnca), an online membership site with video courses designed to help physicians accelerate their career pivots. John and Dr. Tom Davis recently launched NewScript, an online community of healthcare professionals, career transition mentors, and wellness specialists helping each other live a better life. It is a private, uncensored, and ad-free space that incorporates a forum, daily posts, mentorship programs, online courses, livestream events and interviews with clinicians who have transitioned to a nontraditional career. #49: Omicron: Molly Hatchet OR Muller’s Ratchet?
The big “O” variant is upon us, May’s got Covid and we repurposed a livestream! Here comes Omicron. What does this mean for the winter, for your family, your job, your health, your mask supply? There has been a lot of panic pushed by the media over this new variant. So what’s the truth? Is it Molly Hatchet and we’re “flirtin’ with disaster”? Maybe it’s Muller’s Ratchet- where organisms accrue so many deleterious mutations that they push themselves into extinction. Or….. a whole pile of options in between. We give our opinions and interpretation of the emerging data with the underlying theme among experts being ,nobody currently knows where this is going to go. Plus we are trying something new! We repurposed a FaceBook live episode for this show, so it’s definitely got a raw/interactive vibe to it. Let us know how you like it! Sponsor: Our sponsor this month is Locumstory. #48: Medical Unions
Go big or go home… this is an in depth look at a rising trend in the healthcare workforce. What do you know about healthcare unions? Do you think of pickets and healthcare providers demanding more money? Did you even know they existed? With the continuous corporatization of American healthcare, physicians have been losing their voice, power and have not figured out a successful way to keep their power in advocating for the patients best interest. As I have often told patients, I feel like I have as much power as the Walmart checker does in their corporation. Our guest today is Joe Crane. A longtime member of the labor movement and union organizer of nearly two decades, he helps doctors reclaim their profession as the Doctors Council's National Organizing Director. Joe has been working with and organizing doctors for over four years. Most notably, he successfully negotiated several physician collective bargaining agreements and took a group of physicians on the picket line in Washington state's first ever physician strike. The Doctors Council is the country's oldest and largest union of attending physicians. With members spanning four states and both public and private sector workplaces, the Doctors Council is proud to be a united voice for doctors, their patients, and the communities they serve. It’s time to take back the medical profession and revamp healthcare, putting the patient’s best interest first. While we are not suggesting unions are THE single answer, it certainly looks like a positive piece of the puzzle to making our voices heard. Resources: Reach out to Joe anytime! #47: Doctales with Cocktails and Turkey
Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend, giving thanks and staying safe. We also hope you are avoiding the big holiday medical horrors that are common at this time of year. Stop freaking out about Covid this weekend, it’s still more likely that an auto accident will occur than the attack of the spike proteins. Don’t let football or family get your blood boiling, or your heart stopping. Avoid the ER from flying knives, boiling gravy and dirty birds that breed Salmonella! We’ll tell you how NOT to cook a wild turkey ( since we’ve done it) and tell you what foods might be a health hazard. We have a special cocktail this week and surprisingly it’s not Vodka and Cran! I’m sharing the recipe below. Most of all we are thankful for YOU, our listeners, fans and guests that make this wild and crazy ride of a show all possible. Cheers and don’t get too stuffed! Cocktail: Apple Cider Moscow Mule: 2 oz Ginger Beer 1.5 oz Vodka ( we used Chopin) 2 oz Pressed Apple Cider 05. Oz Lime juice fresh squeezed Ice, Cinnamon stick -squeeze lime into a frosted moscow mule mug, add desired ice, add liquid ingredients, stir with cinnamon stick and then toss into cup! Enjoy! #45: Cancer, Recovery and Redemption
How would you react if you were diagnosed with cancer? Unless you have been there, it’s difficult to imagine. Today’s guest, Rick Dancer, relives this trip with us. He graciously takes us through his diagnosis, fears and questions he had in deciding what treatment would be right for him. Rick did a lot of research, not “settling” for a medical plan that would leave him with an outcome he found unacceptable. During our interview it becomes apparent that he didn’t expect how this life changing diagnosis would ultimately impact his life in such a positive way. About Rick Dancer: Rick is a journalist and visual storyteller. He spent 25 years reporting and anchoring the news in the Pacific Northwest. Today, he continues the art of mixing video and interviews producing a live “Get Real with Rick Dancer” nightly production. He and his wife travel the Pacific Northwest bringing viewers the backstories that rarely get told. Hey! #44: The Original “C” Word
What killed 600 K men and women in 2020? Nope not Covid. Even in 2020, the second leading cause of death behind heart disease is Cancer. Sadly everyone has forgotten about the original C word. With the pandemic, Cancer screenings plummeted and people have lost focus on their true health risks. While breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and prostate cancer is the most common in men, the number one cancer killer is still lung cancer. Most people don’t even know that there IS screening available & recommended for those at high risk. Today we cover the current and updated cancer screening recommendations & summarize the gold standard recommendations from the USPSTF ( US Preventive Services Task Force) While the pandemic may have you concerned, don’t let it distract you from prioritizing your health. #42: Fight for Your Right….Vaccine Exemptions, Mandates and Accommodations)
With the recent mandates for vaccine requirements at various places of employment around the country, deadlines are looming for employees to show proof of Covid vaccination. We have been bombarded with questions regarding medical exemptions for those who truly should not receive the vaccine, those who have a medical reason NOT to get it as well as what qualifies as a “religious accommodation”. How does one apply, what forms do you need, who fills it out? What happens if your employer refuses to “accept” your physician letter and you are given your “walking papers’ instead? Our guest today, Alan Thayer of Innovative Law Group ThinkILG.com), is here to address all that and more. He clarifies the importance of the use of the term “religious accommodation” and 6 Key tips if terminated: 1 — DO NOT QUIT! 2 — Challenge adverse determination (consider a letter from a lawyer). 3 — File for unemployment (religious discrimination & failure to accommodate). 4 — File state civil rights complaint against employer (religious discrimination & failure to accommodate). Contact BOLI ( Bureau of Labour and Industry) 5 — File federal civil rights complaint (EEOC) against employer (religious discrimination & failure to accommodate). 6 — Watch court decisions for claims by employees against employers based on federal religious accommodation laws. #41: Mind Your Mental Health
This episode is in honor of World Mental Health Day (and because my bestie k.d asked a long time ago for this) It’s really hard to do justice to a topic in 40 minutes that is so vast and layered. The mental health crisis in the US has fallen on deaf ears for years. Now with Covid bringing emotional stress, healthcare burnout, social isolation, disruption of societal norms- well it’s no wonder the whole world hasn’t literally gone mad. We are here to tell you we get it, you’re not alone, it gets better. Both of us have been through some very dark times. We understand the dark days, real depression, PPD, S.A.D. But we want to remind everyone that as life brings you it’s crappiest moments, going through a rough patch emotionally does not mean you have a disorder. We give you some practical tips for finding the light at the end of the tunnel- I personally create my light with Verilux! It’s a game changer that boosts my mood ANYTIME of the year. Finally, if you or someone you are concerned about is showing serious signs, symptoms and needs professional help- do NOT hesitate in getting immediate attention. #40: Covid Vaccine & Kids part 2: with Dr. Paul Alexander
This week Tim flies solo. May is gone so Tim has lost his wingman or wing woman (for political correctness). Tim interviews Dr Paul Alexander, former member of the US Covid Task Force and advisor to the WHO, among many other roles. He has a PhD in evidenced based medicine and quotes studies faster than most of us can breathe. Paul makes a very compelling evidence based argument that children should be treated as “already being vaccinated”. We dive deep into the data on children and covid, vaccine efficacy and what the vaccine has accomplished to this point. It was an honor to interview Dr Alexander again and dig into the data. You can taste his passion for protecting children and getting life back to normal. We even get a hint of what it was like to work as an insider in DC at the beginning of the pandemic. #39: Follow the Science to Hell
What does it really mean when we say follow the science? Believe it or not, this week is a Doctales with Cocktails episode- albeit a more sobering discussion over a fine, local whiskey. What a perfect episode to ponder over a tumbler of. Blue Line Unapologetic American Whiskey! This week we discuss some historical things done in the name of science. Specifically we dive into Eugenics, the science of “the day” for over 50 years. It became accepted by the scientific community and world elites, intellectuals and political leaders including Alexander Graham Bell, Winston Churchill, John Maynard Keynes, and Woodrow Wilson, to more notably Margaret Sanger and Adolf Hitler. The concept born in the late 1800’s believed that selective breeding of humans would breed away undesirable traits that contributed to a weaker, unhealthy society: feeblemindedness, criminality, birth defects and mental health issues for example. If you were in the ‘ELITE’ crowd, you were a Eugenicist. Fast forward to current societal and scientific struggles. What concepts or “group think” exist? Is following “the science” today’s pandemic the same thing? What about the labels associated with being anti/ pro vax, anti/pro climate change? We contend that while there are often many scientific truths and facts in these principles, we can get caught up in the debate without removing our own bias. What happens next is “the science” becomes political, and for many their politics is a natural extension into becoming their religion. Is Covid all about science or “scientism”? We believe there should be healthy debate which means allowing scientists to challenge one another to reach the truth. Shutting down opposing views and censorship only pushes the agenda of unilateral thinking. Ultimately those who only listen to one side are believers in dogma, not science. I definitely will drink to that! Cheers! Sponsor: Our sponsor this week is Deputy! You can use Deputy on any device, on the go. #38: A Frontline Warrior Story (Life in the ICU)
The most underrated frontline warriors in the Covid-19 fight are the ICU nurses. I’m super excited for you to hear from my sister, Heather Burgess. She has a 10 year career as a Critical Care RN and has been front and central since the pandemic began. She lives in Canada and chats with us today about the Canadian Covid experience. While the patient is fighting for their life, the nurses are there 24/7, 365. More recently they have been denied any vacation time, are doubled up with responsibility and are sharing the emotional stress with patients, families and colleagues. Now into the second year of this pandemic, many of them are reaching their breaking point. This is happening all around the world, not just Canada. I’m excited you finally get to hear “a nurse’s story” ! Heather is very humble in this interview - the nurses acting as advocates for their unconscious patients, the emotional abuse they sustain from grieving family members, the frequent need to change care plans depending on which Intensivist is leading the team. Covid is truly a war they are fighting, with emotional and physical consequences from the workplace. We omit the politics and Tim tries to restrain himself in the vaccine debate! Join us for the Canadian Covid experience. Today’s show is brought to you by Locumstory. #31: “We Are The Prey” with Dr Peter Breggin
Welcome back for Part 2 of our interview with Dr. Peter Breggin , the “Conscience of Psychiatry”. We pick up from last week’s show in our discussion on the history of psychiatric treatment reform, to the parallels with public and social control during Covid. Today we dive into the basis of his new book- Covid 19 and the Global Predators We discuss the big picture with the events before and during the Covid 19 worldwide pandemic and the international intertwining of big power. Is the response to Covid 19 based on science and acts of goodwill towards mankind? Or is it really a responsive action by predatory capitalists not letting a black swan event go to waste? Listen to his summary and decide for yourself! Peter R. Breggin MD is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and former Consultant at NIMH who has been called “The Conscience of Psychiatry” for his many decades of successful efforts to reform the mental health field. His work provides the foundation for modern criticism of psychiatric diagnoses and drugs, and leads the way in promoting more caring and effective therapies. His research and educational projects have brought about major changes in the FDA-approved Full Prescribing Information or labels for dozens of antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs. He continues to educate the public and professions about the tragic psychiatric drugging of America’s children. As a medical-legal expert, Dr. Breggin has unprecedented and unique knowledge about how the pharmaceutical industry too often commits fraud in researching and marketing psychiatric drugs. He has testified many times in malpractice, product liability and criminal cases, often in relation to adverse drug effects and more occasionally electroshock and psychosurgery. During the 1970s Dr. Breggin began his reform work by organizing an international campaign to stop the resurgence of lobotomy and other psychosurgery. He was a huge advocate and voice for the ending of psychosurgery which led to the creation of the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology. Dr. Breggin has authored dozens of scientific articles and more than twenty books, including medical books and the bestsellers Toxic Psychiatry and Talking Back to Prozac. Two more recent books are Medication Madness: The Role of Psychiatric Drugs in Cases of Violence, Suicide and Crime and Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal: A Guide for Prescribers, Therapists, Patients and their Families. His most recent book is Guilt, Shame and Anxiety: Understanding and Overcoming Negative Emotions. #28: “Losing a Child” with Dr. Marcy Larson
Imagine that one moment you are going about your everyday life, the next instant you experience your child’s life vanishing in front of you. This is the story and journey of grief recovery from our dear guest Dr. Marcy Larson. She graciously shares her personal story, how it affected her ability to practice Medicine and how she created a podcast to help not only her personal healing but others as well. Knowing what to say to those who are mourning is difficult and often we say the wrong things to people, trying to be helpful in our ignorance. This episode is for EVERYONE. Whether you personally have experienced loss, know someone who has, or are in the Medical profession counseling a patient. Grief and life loss is something we will all face in our lifetime. Marcy Larson is a Pediatrician, wife and mother of four children. She is passionate about caring for children and families. #27: ICD WHAT??? : “A Doctales with Cocktails Episode”
We know you’ve been waiting.. Yes, it's Doctales! ICD codes are the bane of a doctor’s life. We languish in our pain with the most absurd ICD-10 codes we have heard of. If it has happened, it exists as a billing code: walked into lamp post, sucked into jet engine, attacked by orca, problem with the in-laws? Yes these make their way into the insurance companies hands to process the cause of your visit. If you were injured at the opera house, ever had bizarre personal hygiene, had an accident with a land yacht… well it has been cataloged! This episode has been LONG overdue! We have missed laughing on a doctales and it’s been so refreshing to let loose today. Grab a cocktail, or just laugh along on your commute. Either way, laughter is the best medicine!! By the way, we are sipping on Ciroc! Iced Mango Ciroc with a splash of lemonade makes a great summer sipper.
