Beyond the Big Screen is a podcast about the true story behind the movies you love. We will talk about history, philosophy, religion, art, sports, literature and much more. Movies and media only tell you a small part of the story. In this podcast we will look into a wide variety of topics on the big screen and beyond!
When Movies and Books Depart and Converge
Today we will shoot for the stars and maybe shoot some bugs as we talk about the 1997 film Starship Troopers. The movie is based on the 1959 novel Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. In this episode, Mustache Chris and I will talk about some of the big themes about society and humanity that this film and movie bring up. They are universal themes that director Paul Verhoeven and author Robert Heinlein took in very different directions. You can learn more about Beyond the Big Screen and subscribe at all these great places:www.atozhistorypage.comwww.beyondthebigscreen.comClick here to support Beyond the Big Screen!https://www.subscribestar.com/beyondthebigscreenhttps://www.patreon.com/beyondthebigscreenClick to Subscribe:https://www.spreaker.com/show/4926576/episodes/feedemail: [email protected]://www.patreon.com/historyofthepapacyParthenon Podcast Network Home:parthenonpodcast.comOn Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/groups/atozhistorypagehttps://www.facebook.com/HistoryOfThePapacyPodcasthttps://twitter.com/atozhistoryMusic Provided by:Music from "5/8 Socket" by Rico's GruvUsed by permission.© 2021 All Rights Reserved.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=210vQJ4-Ns0https://open.spotify.com/album/32EOkwDG1YdZwfm8pFOzUu"Crossing the Chasm" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Begin Transcript:

And now let's go beyond the big screen.[00:01:00] Thank you for joining me again on Beyond the Big Screen. I am really excited to be joined by author Craig w Stanfield to talk about all things artificial intelligence, dystopian futures, and defiance in a heavily controlled world. Uh, before we get started, uh, Craig, can you tell us a bit about your background and what made you want to write, uh, fiction, particularly science fiction?Okay, well first of all, in terms of my background, I've got a long history of, uh, work as a technologist, as a software entrepreneur. Got a doctorate in computer science, artificial intelligence in the 1980s. I've had a long career in the technology industry, primarily, you know, starting out with artificial intelligence and then moving forward into enterprise computing where I've worked on technology that is used to collect and analyze data for marketing purposes for a lot of [00:02:00] very, very big companies that are, uh, household names around the country. And so I've got a lot of insight into both what you can do using AI to. Make decisions automatically. And collect the data that Theis need for that, for that, uh, decision making. And then to affect change in the world, uh, by reaching out into the, uh, telephone network. So there's, there's parts of the world where technology that I've built, uh, affects what shows up on people's cell phones in a number of countries, uh, where. You know, you pick up your cell phone and the cell phone sends you a marketing message as well, Sam, why? I develop a lot of that technology so I know what can be done and I know what is being done and it starts to worry me. When you look at places like Google and Facebook, uh, and Twitter and all the others. And how much of an effect they can have on reality as you see it, or [00:03:00] the perceived reality as opposed to the real reality by tailoring what you see and making things that they don't want you to see go away. And then, uh, use of rewards and, uh, punishments if you, uh, depending on your behavior, and it worries me.It's a fundamental change to. What it means to be a liberal democracy. I'm using liberal in the very general sense of liberty. And, uh, it, that's what really drove me to work. I just saw this happening and I felt that the best way to reach out with some of these concerns was to set it in a fictional world where you could see, well, if this keeps going, here's what could happen.I'd like to, I think that. Really, it's an un underused, or science fiction was used in that purpose for so long, and then now it seems to have faded away when you had the thought process. I wanna share this information with the public. What made you think that? Yes, science fiction is the way to get this across as opposed to just writing a, uh, [00:04:00] a book about it, a nonfiction science based book.Well, there there's a lot of people who do that. And, uh, it would be very difficult to, uh, you know, sort of get things published as either, you know, a polemic or a collection of essays or a, you know, a scientific, uh, work. Uh, there's a lot out there and it is difficult to break through the, uh, crowd and people wanna be entertained. You know, science fiction is entertaining and people can learn about AI and the potential abuses while reading a fabulous book that they, uh, are going to. There's also, I wanted to distance this a little bit from contemporary partisan politics because, you know, uh, I'm on the right side of the spectrum, although not all that far as it happens.Uh, the things that are going on with the ability of big companies to. Act as a shadow government ought to concern everybody on the left and on the right. [00:05:00] Uh, you know, particularly those people, uh, left of center who do have an ongoing commitment to personal freedom. Do you think that the science fiction genre gives you a bit of a sandbox to play with these ideas in a bit more, uh, maybe a loose fashion and maybe play out where ideas, uh, could po potentially go than just writing?Predictive, uh, science book, absolutely. I can just set up a world with a political structure that, uh, and a technological structure to be whatever I want it to and say, okay, well here's the world that I'm going to create and here's what it's like to live in this world. Now, the world that I created, uh, which I call the AI dys, I set it 250 years in the future to give myself a big, a big sandbox to sort of detach from current events. And so I thought, well, let's take the following power structure. We've got, uh, monopolistic corporations that can set [00:06:00] their terms of service to be whatever they want them to be, you know, so they put whatever they want to in their customer agreement, and if you wanna do business with them, you have to sign their customer agreement and, In this world just to make those customer agreements have a little bit more oomph and to keep things simple.I every, every industry has a single monopoly. So if you don't, uh, You don't have to sign the food company's customer agreement, but you don't have to eat. Uh, and again, that's not the world we're in in this country, although there's parts of the world where, where we are heading that way. Uh, but the, what we've got actually right now are, are, uh, oligarchy's of like-minded.

Vampires Taken Seriously – Fright Night
Today, we are going to take a chomp out of the 2011 vampire movie Fright Night. The 2011 version of Fright Night is a remake of the 1985 cult classic original. The 2011 version takes some of the satirical elements of the original, but with a pre-covid early 2000s twist. I thank you for joining me again, Beyond the Big Screen.[00:00:00] Hi, Gil. Thanks again for coming on with me, me coming on your show. I'm really excited about today. Hi Steven. Yeah, this is a collab about maybe my favorite story of all time. The story of Joseph who shh. Such a good. It's really growing on me too. I it's, it's raising up through the ranks of my favorite story.I'm in, there's so many good stories, but I think this one is definitely top 10, maybe top five, this field that we're going to talk about. An excellent job. And I'm really happy with what the, so this movie, Joseph King of dreams, it's really amazing how closely it's stuck to the biblical story from Genesis, uh, 37 to about 50 51.So Joseph [00:01:00] doesn't get his own book, but he gets a solid chunk of Genesis to himself. So apparently the makers, the creators of the movie in their first showing of the movie to all the producers, there was like deafening silence. And the bottom line was, this is horrible. This is not a story. It doesn't mean.Nothing fits. It makes no sense. And then they had to go to the drawing board to go back to the drawing board. Actually, now that I think about it, the D even do like a drawing board, like a, you know, the, what you might call it, a storyboard or the storyboard. Sorry. Went back and looked like what's the actual story, because there are several layers of editing and additions and stuff that doesn't really fit.And they just found the core of the story, the vision of the story, hang on to it and just ignored everything that didn't fit. And as I was watching the movie. Yes, you got it. You found it just like all the, all the things in those chapters [00:02:00] that just interfere with the natural organic progression of the story are not in the movie. So just like, you know, I have a Bible podcast have a podcast about films. This could be like a great opportunity for me to just say they didn't understand this movie at all. Let me tell you what it's all about now. The story, not the movie that just stood the story, the gut story story about a family feud about forgiveness, about opening, and you leave, it's an it story with a happy ending, with a happy ending.Yeah. And that's amazing. And not so many of these biblical stories, there is no happy ending or there is an, uh, an ending that wraps it up into a night and sneaky. And we'll talk so much too, about some of the ideas that you've developed in your podcast, a biblical proportions about how this book was written. So we're going to be going to movies and literature and literature review. There's going to be a lot [00:03:00] going on and I can't really wait to talk about this. Just a quick refresher for those of us who have forgotten the main plot of Joseph, the film is called Joseph Kingston. Because Joseph's superpower is at the beginning, dreaming the future and then interpreting other people's dreams to see the future. He is the favorite son of the third, a Hebrew patriarch. Jacob Yacov also named the Israel that fatherly love makes Joseph's brothers jealous. Throw him into a pit. They sell him into slavery. In Egypt, it starts out as a service in Egypt, climbs through the ranks, becomes the number two person in the entire land.Second, only to the Pharaoh. And then when his brothers come, he recognizes, they don't recognize him. And there's a lot of. And then by the end, he tells them who is he forgives them, asks for their forgiveness. They bring their father and they're very [00:04:00] prosperous and successfully Egypt. And they're happy family again, the end, it's a happy. With a little bit of extra singing because it's Dreamworks. So you got to have some show tunes in there, but for the most part, that is the story of the movie, Joseph Manoj dreams, and then Joseph from Genesis, the aunt and the last couple of sections of Genesis. We talk about how the show, the dream like van Gogh painting.Wonderful. Yeah. That's I mean, I think if you read it, you might. I have a different imagery for the dreams, but I think that that's really how they portray them in the movie is probably how somebody would have dreams like that. It's not going to be a literal or. Uh, film type. It's going to be that the stocks of wheat, and then they fall there's one in the middle and they're all swirling around. That's how you're going to have the dream of that sort of thing. Right. They really, I think are there all of their [00:05:00] dream sequences really do justice to the biblical story. You know, it's not easy to do justice to an iconic biblical story. So really kudos for that for the visuals because the visuals, no, I can't say that.I imagined it as a Vanguard, but it doesn't matter. The descriptions in the, in the biblical story are very colorful, very grand and wonderful. That's really apt the way that, uh, that they did it. Kudos. Clearly Jacob prefers Joseph over the other 11 ish of brothers, 10, 11 brothers. And he does him a disservice.Yeah. Which exactly does them, this survey. Jacob gives Joseph a beautiful coat. They call it the coat of many colors, the tunic of many colors. We'll get into a little bit of the symbolism of that, but, and really, I guess then the high level, this coat really makes the other brothers jealous and just a whole bunch of [00:06:00] these dreams.Jacob has. Are these genes that Joseph has really says that Joseph is going to be above all the other brothers. He's like me, me, me, me, me, the brothers really hate it. And they can cock this scheme to get rid of Joseph where they, uh, trick Joseph into getting separated from everybody. They sell Joseph into slavery, the throw into a pit for Roman to a pit. They sell them into say slavery, the hen to make it look to Egypt, to make it look like Joseph has just been killed out in the field by wild wolves. They take the coat of many colors, put some blood onto it, give it to Jacob, Jacob. So upset. Then the narrative takes over as Joseph. Through being sold as a slave and to Egypt, I think he gets sold to the may a lights for 20 pieces of [00:07:00] silver man. He's sold to the . 30 pieces. Yeah. And this is was, uh, it was sold at 4:30 PM, which that, and we can talk about some of the symbolism of the 30 pieces of silver, because that kind of set off alarm bells for me. Yeah. That stands out. They make a really good job at making it, you know, uh, seem reasonable. Every, everybody is reasonable, all their motives and motivated.Uh, reasonable. So first of all, we have to say, Joseph, you're safe yourself. The reason that his name that this is his name is added like added on. He is like the added child. That's the explanation that we'll give him earlier in Genesis. And also Joseph is like an added son to Jacobs Sans, which are in the Bible, are all upon him, upon him as characters, which means that they have the name of.Uh, so Judah, the character, Judah is a character named [00:08:00] after the tribe, the kingdom of Judah, just given, uh, as a character, you have levy and all that. Those are. You know, we read it in the Bible as if that came first, but that didn't come first.

We are joined by Josh Cohen of the Eyewitness History Podcast as we work our way through each of Quentin Tarantino’s films. This time we are talking about 2009’s Inglorious Basterds. I will see you next time, beyond the big screen.[00:00:00] did they say in the film one that's approximately takes place. That first scene they say happens in 1941 where, uh, we'll meet him. Eventually. Hons Londa played by the wonderful Christoph waltz that was in 1941. Shoshana, the one of the lead characters, she looks young there, but I don't think they say how much time passed between when that scene happens. And then rains puts together the Inglorious bastards. Do they say it? Not, not as I recall, maybe our viewers can, can fact check the two of us on this, but I, I believe it's generally presumed that at least a few years past, because Shoshana goes from being. Effectively a, a refugee, a Jew, a Jewish person on, on the, on the lamb, um, to becoming, uh, an owner of a [00:01:00] theater.Um, and the way she gets us theater is somewhat mysterious. She says that it, uh, it was left to her by her on and her uncle, but it must be remembered that she's giving this as a story to, um, uh, Fredericks. Uh, a German, a German officer, in fact, in a war hero, which I'm sure we'll, we'll get into. Um, and so it's, it's tough to tell how much of that should really be believed. And it must have been presumably before the D-Day invasion in 1944, because Francis fell occupied by the Germans. So at some time in between 1941 and 19, mid, 1944, Right. That was where I placed it. That, that was the one thing I knew since it was still occupied. France was that, uh, that was that it was before D-Day.So it hadn't been before any real, true blue, serious involvement by the, by, by, uh, us Americans. I'll take a moment to just even reel it back further to what did you think [00:02:00] that very first scene was powerful where Londa, like you say, that Londa is. As polite. And as somebody, I don't know where I saw this or read this, but it said even the devil can have an angelic glow or something like that. But so even somebody who's completely evil to the core can appear to be good. And on every, you know, how polite he was and how he, what his real point there is to find the Jews who have escaped. No, it was that there, that the farmer is holding or it's hiding Jews. And as farm stad, he knows it. The farmer knows. He knows that, and Londa is just going to keep giving them enough rope to hang himself with it. And he finally gives, uh, the farmer, the choice either we're going to kill your whole family and we're still going to kill them. And to just to put [00:03:00] that, that choice on. Film as your first thing that you see is really gut wrenching.Yeah. Not much to argue with there. Um, yeah. W I want to talk about that scene if we may, um, that opening scene was phenomenal, so I'm not even kidding. I remember seeing it in theaters. You will recall the first, like 10, 15 minutes of that movie are in French. I mean, it's on for a good little while before they speak a word of English. And I'm not kidding. When I, when I first saw it in theaters, I thought they put the wrong reel of film into the projector. Well, because it was, so it just wasn't what you were expecting, you know? And, and you're right. Uh, hands-on that comes up, you know, is this the property of Mr. LA petite? It's a pleasure to meet you Michelle Appetit. And he shakes his hand and, and, you know, may mean we, um, w may you please invite me in your house when you have a discussion? Uh, stringing them along and in this way, um, asks and excuse me, asks for milk, uh, which becomes a bit of a recurring theme, [00:04:00] uh, for, for, for Landa and, uh, A very interesting analogy, metaphor, whatever we want, whatever we want to call it between a squirrel and a rat and why you hate you find one repulsive and you don't know why and you like the other, and you don't know why when they both actually look fairly similar and he uses this analogy for why.Might hate the Jews, which I thought was very interesting, uh, obviously, uh, for, for the, the goofballs out there, obviously I'm not agreeing with him. Um, but it was a very interesting turn-taking way of putting that across. And then at the very end. He just goes in for the kill and it's just a body blow. I mean, uh, you're sheltering the enemies of the state, or you're not, you're hiding them underneath the floorboards, aren't you?And it just like just goes right there and the way the music comes in, uh, uh, uh, towards the end where he ushers in what they think. [00:05:00] Um, the Dreyfus is, uh, what the Dreyfus is think are the, um, the women, but they're actually the Nazi officers. It was. Um, and by the way, that's where we meet a manual menu as well.Um, she's the one person that gets away from this, the slaughter, uh, and she, and she runs. Then we next see her as the owner of the, of the theater bond that lets her get away. Yes. He hunted, he, he sees her, he could have shot her or as sent out the, um, other guards or whatever. To go catch her and he doesn't.Why doesn't he? Yeah, it's a very interesting choice. Um, he delights in the slaughter of his family of, excuse me. He delights in the slot of her family. Um, and yeah, she's running in an open field. She's in an open target. Uh, you got. Londa a soldier like him could have made that shot. Has him, has her literally in his sights, leaves the gun off and says Overwatch or Shanna. Why doesn't he [00:06:00] pull that trigger? Um, I don't have an answer for that. Uh, other than, other than it's an appealed, his statistics. Because what will, because one thing about him is, uh, is I wonder if his sadism and his psychopathy overrules, everything else, um, uh, about his, his job, because his job surely would have been to kill her.Yeah. But then he has the opportunity, a couple of opportunities to kill her and he keeps, or he could have called her out when they were meeting with, um, what's a gerbils and the cafe they could have, he could have called her out. There was another opportunity to, I almost wonder. If he somehow planned it, that she would take over the theater, she would be, he would somehow the movie would get changed from the big theater and Paris to the small one. What if he was behind the whole [00:07:00] plot, knowing that the allies are going to win? 'cause that's what we see at the end. He makes the deal. He knows that the bastards could, he, it was his call essentially to set up forward the plan that winds up killing Hitler and girls and, um, oh, Boring and Gorman. Yeah. He's the one who it was, he could have said yes or no at any point. And he's the one who got it actually done. I wonder if he was actually the driving force behind that whole plan. Now that's extremely interesting. Uh, cause yeah, I mean, uh, I I'll, I'll call Linda's words back to you. Um, he even says, you know, if I don't pick up this phone and, and alert the theater it's as if I'm causing Hitler's death, even more than yourselves and addressing, uh, uh, Brad Pitt as, as all-terrain and BJ Novak as the.Uh, you'd have edge. Well, no, that's very interesting because yeah, I mean, he, granted he [00:08:00] gets carved up, uh, at the end, but he makes off pretty good. Um, he kind of makes out like abandoned the scar side. Um, that's very interesting. I wonder if he could have been the mastermind, but. Maybe, maybe he knew the on and the uncle, maybe that's
