204. Unapologetic Leadership: Featuring Dr. Marcus Belin

This week’s guest, Dr. Marcus Belin, shares how a difficult start to his role as a Principal allowed him to appreciate, learn, and not regret the hard lessons of his leadership experience.    In this episode, we discuss: Setting Fire to the “Comfort Box” Showing Vulnerability and Transparency to your Staff And his podcast, Unapologetic Leadership About Dr. Marcus Belin: Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago, Dr. Belin learned the value of education at a very young age. That belief has carried him into my career as an educator and my commitment to making an indelible mark on the lives of my students and colleagues.  He attended Bradley University, where he received his bachelor’s in elementary education followed by a master’s in education administration. He completed his doctorate at National Louis University in July 2020. His career as a 5th- and 6th-grade social studies teacher at Quest Charter Academy, a brand new charter school that was opening its doors in Peoria.  He then became the Dean of Students at the newly opened Quest Charter Academy High School, and after two years was named the school’s assistant principal. As a young administrator, he had the opportunity to help build the culture and structure of a new high school.  Just a few years later he became the assistant principal at Dunlap High School. With much to learn, he quickly became connected to the community and focused his work on creating opportunities for students at Dunlap. Working as part of an administrative team of exceptional leaders, his efforts were focused on building a culture of opportunity, including the formation of an alternative education program for students who were credit-deficient. In 2018, he became principal at Huntley High School, a large and forward-thinking high school in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago that has built a national reputation as a leader in revolutionizing how students learn. This role has been the biggest and most rewarding experience in his education career so far. His goal is to create and maintain a learning environment that is full of opportunity for all students, an equitable and supportive community, and a place where every student knows they are loved and cared about.  While climbing the ranks of administration. He currently serves as the first black President-elect of the Illinois Principals Association. He has dedicated time to IPA by serving the Central Illinois Valley Region of IPA as a board member,  the membership chair of the Kishwaukee Region, and as Legislative Chair on the State Board. In 2014, he was named one of Peoria’s 40 Leaders Under 40. In 2020, awarded Illinois Principals Association Kishwaukee Region Principal of The Year award. Belin became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. during his time at Bradley.  Dr. Belin has a beautiful wife who is an awesome educator who loves kids and has a passion to help develop her fellow educators. The Belin team consists of three beautiful children, Maliyah, Makenzie, Mekhi.   Belin's drive and passion as a servant leader guide his commitment to the work as an educator and school leader. Mike began his career as a social studies teacher in NYC.  While teaching he earned his doctorate from Columbia University and accepted an administrative position with Mineola in 1999. He believes strongly in the district’s mission to inspire students to become lifelong learners that exhibit strength of character and contribute positively to a global society. During his twenty three years with the district, he has been a big proponent of using technology to engage students in rigorous content. All five schools in Mineola have been recognized as Apple distinguished schools.  Mineola is also a member of the League of Innovative Schools, Dr. Nagler is the Chairperson of the Advisory Board. Mineola was one of the first schools in the State to implement a comprehensive computer science curriculum starting in kindergarten. She believes that early education and interventions can change the course of a child’s life.  Fennell holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education with an endorsement in reading from Ashland University and a 4-5 generalist endorsement from The Ohio State University. She has a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Ashland University. She is always learning and serving the world of education through training, presentations, and committees.  Fennell is the author of children’s books including Play? Yay!, Choose Your Cheer, and Play? Yay! Baby Talk. She is a defender of play in the classroom and looks for ways to incorporate fun into learning. She believes in the power of play for social, emotional, and motor skills and has volunteered her time to have a Lego Club for kindergarten through third grade students.  She is the founder of the Young Author’s Workshop at Ashland City Schools. This week’s guest, Matt Dunbar, shares how developing the foundational and essential skills of our students is important for their future success in our local communities.  In this episode, we also discuss: Relationships and Cultural Competency  Professional Growth culture  And the Vision 25 Model  About Matt Dunbar: As the East Hall Administrator at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, Matt Dunbar works daily to build lasting relationships through service, authenticity, and humor. A 2007 product of Franklin County High School, Matt returned in 2012 to teach World History and Government to 9th and 12th grade students. In 2015 he began his work with the Franklin County Public Schools Cultural Competence committee and helped to develop staff within that division through self-reflection and deep, intentional conversation. In 2017 Matt received his Masters from Virginia Tech in Educational Leadership and took an Assistant Principal position with Roanoke City Public Schools at William Fleming High School. While at Fleming, working under the incredible leadership of Archie Freeman, Matt used restorative practices to engage with students and better support the staff of Coulter Hall. He credits his year at William Fleming with developing him as a clear communicator and confident decision maker. After having a daughter in 2018 he returned to Franklin County as the 8th grade administrator at Benjamin Franklin Middle. While at BFMS, Matt has continued his work with the Cultural Competence committee, helped to develop the division's Profile of a Graduate, and Franklin County’s Vision25. Matt is married to Kelly, a 2nd grade teacher at Lee M. Waid Elementary and the division’s 2021 Teacher of the Year. Allyson is so proud of her school district and the Zeeland, MI community, and she loves being the principal of Quincy Elementary. She cannot imagine a more dedicated, passionate and skilled group of teachers. They elicit wonder, excitement and a love for learning in their students. Recognizing the significant impact trauma has had on many of our students, staff and families, Allyson is a Certified Trauma Practitioner in Education. The support that students affected by trauma need are beneficial to all students because they are grounded in a foundational core of strong, positive relationships based on trust. She is honored to serve on the Board of Directors for MEMSPA (Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association). Additionally, she is on the Steering Committee for MACUL (Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning) SIG-ADMIN. She recognizes the value of working with and learning from amazing educational leaders in both of these organizations.
