NY Times Best Seller Joel Selvin Releases Drums And Demons The Tragic Journey Of Jim Gordon
Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey of Jim Gordon by acclaimed music critic and author Joel Selvin. In addition to a large feature story in The Guardian, advance reviews are starting to come in and the responses to this biography on the groundbreaking drummer and his troubled life are universally positive. “It’s a one-of-a-kind story, and captures the total highs and unbelievable lows of a man who helped create our present-day music of the spheres,” Americana Highways commented. The Houston Press said, “In his research, Selvin had to learn almost as much about mental health and medical conditions as music.” NYS Music says the book “provides the first comprehensive view of Gordon’s vast musical achievements and a harrowing yet empathetic appraisal of the most treacherous of mental illnesses which brought him down,” referring to Selvin as “One of rock’s greatest journalists.” The Arts Fuse credits Selvin in chronicling the drummer’s rise as a gifted young musician and highlights that the book’s “research is comprehensive.” Publisher’s Weekly states, "Without downplaying the gruesome details of Gordon’s crime, Selvin gracefully portrays the musician as 'more than his disease.’ This affecting account sheds new light on one of rock’s most complicated figures.” Library Journal’s review points out, “It’s a tribute to Selvin that he handles the contrasts and complexities of Gordon’s life with sympathy here, while not shying away from the toll Gordon took on those around him . . . consistently compelling from start to finish.” Selvin’s riveting narrative follows the man who many consider the greatest rock drummer of all time, from his humble beginnings as a teenage touring musician, to his many landmark accomplishments in the studio and on the road, through his downward spiral into mental illness, matricide and incarceration. With the cooperation of the late rock legend’s family, and based on his trademark extensive, detailed research, Selvin uncovers one of the darkest stories in popular music, further cementing his reputation as a master of rock noir.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Agave Spirit Expert Joey Angelo The Important Role Mezcal Is Now Playing
For the first time ever, agave spirits (made from Mexico’s agave plant such as tequila and mezcal) will outsell vodka in U.S. bars this year, becoming the #1 selling liquor category. And sales for Mezcal in particular, (often referred to as tequila’s smokier cousin) have soared, making it the fastest-growing spirit in North America. According to a new research report about the skyrocketing growth of mezcal, part of its popularity is due to consumers’ fascination with Mexican cuisine and culture. Others note that more and more people are developing an appreciation for premium artisanal spirits and are drawn to mezcal’s unique flavor profile. Whatever the reason, the hottest bars and restaurants across the country now feature mezcal cocktails on their menus. Previously viewed as an up-and-coming spirit, mezcal has gone mainstream and 2024 is poised to be its biggest year yet.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Becoming Rachel Carson Verse Author Ann E Burg Stays True In Force Of Nature
FORCE OF NATURE is a well-researched and timely free verse novel on the life, inspiration, and impact of Rachel Carson. Carson is the naturalist, marine biologist, and author of Silent Spring, whose work is credited with bringing much-needed urgency and action to the global environmental conservation movement. Burg began writing Carson's story in response to her nagging worry over our ailing planet. As an intrepid researcher looking into climate change, she discovered it was impossible to research the environment without coming across the words and warnings of Rachel Carson: Man is a part of nature and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself. Who was Rachel Carson? Where did she find her courage? How did she forge her path to define the global climate movement as we know it by writing Silent Spring? FORCE OF NATURE answers those questions and more in brilliant free verse written for young scientists, environmentalists, feminists, and students.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

When Punk Was Still Underground In New York We Had Speedball Baby And Ali Smith
"Ali Smith's The Ballad of Speedball Baby is a sometimes-harrowing ride poetically described in neon prose. Ali takes me to places I've been myself as a fellow 'woman of the road' and rocked and rolled. She brings it all back home so vividly with humor, originality, and love-and 'oh-yeah-that-happened-to-me-too' truthfulness. Like the touring band's rite of passage: crashing in a stranger's house in Where-am-I? USA and barely escaping with your life and bass guitar.or bartending in an East Village dive bar. It's a special experience being a Woman in Rock, and as Ali's story unfolds, she'll bring you along for the trip of your life." -- Kate Pierson, the B-52's A Stylist Magazine (UK) Pick of Best New Nonfiction A Kobo Pick of Best Book of the Month in Biographies & Memoirs The Ballad of Speedball Baby is the thrilling, darkly hilarious, and heart-wrenchingly vulnerable story of Ali Smith's coming-of-age in '90s New York as she commits to the messy, exhilarating life of a musician and must survive the slings and arrows society reserves for women who refuse to comply. As an only child reeling from the demolition of her parents' toxic marriage, the New York City underground music scene offers a young Ali a different family of misfits and talented outsiders to belong to. She becomes the bass player for edgy band Speedball Baby, a decision that will take her around the world-from onstage at the legendary CBGBs to the red-light district of Amsterdam. She's often the only girl in a broken-down tour van, being strip-searched at the Croatian border, chased by lunatics, and navigating the seedy underbelly of a male-dominated music scene full of addiction, violence, and misogyny-all while keeping her sharp wit and dark humor intact. Rimmed with heavy black eyeliner and smelling faintly of cheap booze, The Ballad of Speedball Baby is a pulse-quickening, unpredictable ride through the '90s music scene-alternately terrifying, hilarious, and painfully evocative-as well as a love letter to the power of female solidarityBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

The geography speaks for itself. The bad guys are just kilometers away, across the river. We are the only international (or locals) with a brick and mortar office downtown, for them to go for help. No assistance from govt unless elderly, and the assistance they get is shit. Office safe from “normal” shelling (tank fire, most mortars). Glide bombs and attack drones are new since Ukrainians landed on other side and have beachhead. Quietly, that is a total massacre over there — poorly kept secret here. can’t do much about the big stuff … if we get hit with a glide bomb we’re fucked. I like our chances. U.S. Brigadier General Anthony AJ Tata Releases The Phalanx Code
The day before his discharge from the Army, General Garrett Sinclair is freed from Ft. Leavenworth Disciplinary Barracks by his former Delta Force operative, Jake Mahegan. Meanwhile, his imprisoned teammates are released from Naval incarceration by a manipulative tech magnate, Mitch Drewson, solely for the purpose of having Sinclair and his Dagger team protect his Project Optimus. Author A. J. Tata uses his vast military experience to create thrillers that feel as if they're ripped from today's headlines. In his new masterpiece, THE PHALANX CODE: A Garrett Sinclair Novel (St. Martin's Press, on sale date February 27, 2024; $29.00), Sinclair, newly freed, has to save members of his team while learning of a devastating family secret in the process. Project Optimus - an ambitious endeavor to empower citizens to protect financial and personal data in the face of increasingly authoritarian federal governments - is going face to face against the threat from Aurelius Blanc and Phalanx Corporation. Phalanx's data collection and media application is enabling a global security state through partnerships with the major industrialized nations, creating a form of technofascism that monitors the activity of everyone with a smartphone, tablet, computer, or any web connected device. Though Sinclair is a "free agent," with no military chain of command to deal with, he directly challenges Drewson's motives for gathering his entire team for this mission. At that moment, though, Phalanx assassin squads take over an Optimus server farm in California and grab an Optimus coder named Blair Campbell. With Campbell's well being in jeopardy, Sinclair deploys his team in an attempt to save him and protect the remainder of Optimus so they can complete their vital work, which is highlighted by deciphering the mysterious Phalanx Code, suspected to contain the Phalanx kill list of Optimus employees. Caught in a deadly game between two tech moguls, and with Phalanx squads hunting him and those he loves, Sinclair must determine who he can trust while a devastating part of his family past comes back to haunt him and everything and everyone he holds dear.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Filmmaker Now Author Ed Zwick Releases Hits Flops And Other Illusions
This heartfelt and wry career memoir from the director of Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, Legends of the Fall, About Last Night, and Glory, creator of the show thirtysomething, and executive producer of My So-Called Life, gives a dishy, behind-the-scenes look at working with some of the biggest names in Hollywood."I'll be dropping a few names," Ed Zwick confesses in the introduction to his book. "Over the years I have worked with self-proclaimed masters-of-the-universe, unheralded geniuses, hacks, sociopaths, savants, and saints." He has encountered these Hollywood types during four decades of directing, producing, and writing projects that have collectively received eighteen Academy Award nominations (seven wins) and sixty-seven Emmy nominations (twenty-two wins). Though there are many factors behind such success, including luck and the contributions of his creative partner Marshall Herskovitz, he's known to have a special talent for bringing out the best in the people he's worked with, especially the actors. In those intense collaborations, he's sought to discover the small pieces of connective tissue, vulnerability, and fellowship that can help an actor realize their character in full.Talents whom he spotted early include Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Denzel Washington, Claire Danes, and Jared Leto. Established stars he worked closely with include Leonardo DiCaprio, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Craig, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, and Jennifer Connelly. He also sued Harvey Weinstein over the production of Shakespeare in Love-and won. He shares personal stories about all these people, and more. Written mostly with love, sometimes with rue, this memoir is also a meditation on working, sprinkled throughout with tips for anyone who has ever imagined writing, directing, or producing for the screen. Fans with an appreciation for the beautiful mysteries-as well as the unsightly, often comic truths-of crafting film and television won't want to miss it.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Sci-Fi Fantasy Author Janice Carr Smith Releases Look N Up Invasion

The reader is transported to a different world, where only your survival instincts can save you. Here, every creature is determined to have an uncanny survival instinct.“The twists and turns in the narrative,” says Christina Avina of Pacific Book Review, “including the shocking ending, will showcase the importance of learning from one another and recognizing our differences while finding new ways to come together, united, and end the judgment that we reserve for those different from us.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

True Crime Author And Lawyer McCracken Poston Releases Zenith Man
Like a nonfiction John Grisham thriller with echoes of Rainman, Just Mercy, and a captivating smalltown Southern setting, this is the fascinating true story-sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking-of an idealistic young lawyer determined to free an innocent neurodivergent man accused of murdering the wife no one knew he had. Was this small-town TV repair man "a harmless eccentric or a bizarre killer" (Atlanta Journal Constitution). For the first time, Alvin Ridley's own defense attorney reveals the inside story of his case and trial in an extraordinary tale of friendship and an idealistic young attorney's quest to clear his client's name-and, in the process, rebuild his own life. In October 1997, the town of Ringgold in northwest Georgia was shaken by reports of a murder in its midst. A dead woman was found in Alvin Ridley's house-and even more shockingly, she was the wife no one knew he had. McCracken Poston had been a state representative before he lost his bid for U.S. Congress and returned to his law career. Alvin Ridley was a local character who once sold and serviced Zenith televisions. Though reclusive and an outsider, the "Zenith Man," as Poston knew him, hardly seemed capable of murder. Alvin was a difficult client, storing evidence in a cockroach-infested suitcase, unwilling to reveal key facts to his defender. Gradually, Poston pieced together the full story behind Virginia and Alvin's curious marriage and her cause of death-which was completely overlooked by law enforcement. Calling on medical experts, testimony from Alvin himself, and a wealth of surprising evidence gleaned from Alvin's junk-strewn house, Poston presented a groundbreaking defense that allowed Alvin to return to his peculiar lifestyle, a free man. Years after his trial, Alvin was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a revelation that sheds light on much of his lifelong personal battle-and shows how easily those who don't fit societal norms can be castigated and misunderstood. Part true crime, part courtroom drama, and full of local color, Zenith Man is also the moving story of an unexpected friendship between two very different men that changed-and perhaps saved-the lives of both.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

A recent installment of ESPN’s 30 for 30 series, “The Minister of Defense” (now streaming on ESPN+), chronicled the extraordinary career, complicated life, and profound spiritual journey of NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion Reggie White. Now, ESPN introduces a new podcast – Through the Flames: Reggie’s Church – which focuses on one unfortunate in White’s life – the mysterious 1996 burning of his church in Knoxville, Tennessee. In the midst of a rash of mid-1990s church burnings across the United States, White’s Inner City Church boasts a growing interracial congregation, and after the building is firebombed and reduced to ashes, White believes the attack is the work of racists. The NFL legend and pastor uses his platform to maintain public pressure on the investigation, even as the sensitive nature of the crime causes government officials to tread carefully. As the story unfolds, questions are raised about the church’s financial status, along with the possibility of arson.
