Organized Crime On Page And Screen The New Book From David Geherin
Thanks to writers like Mario Puzo, filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese, and actors like Al Pacino and James Gandolfini, American and Sicilian Mafia characters are well-known figures in contemporary popular culture. Other powerful organized crime groups appearing in popular media include the Neapolitan Camorra and Mexican drug cartels. This book takes a close look at all these examples of organized crime by examining the different ways these organizations and their members have been portrayed in many of our most popular novels, movies, and TV series, and how the gangster figure has evolved from its earliest depictions in a trio of Hollywood films in the 1930s up to the present day. A Self Proclaimed Nerd Adam Bohannon From Season 26 On NBC's The Voice
Adam, a self-proclaimed total nerd, loves everything that has to do with "Star Trek," "Doctor Who," Legos, comic books and writing goofy songs. Born to a white Jewish mother and a Black father, Adam struggled with his bi-racial identity. When his parents split at 4 years old, his mother relocated from New York to Israel where they lived for the next several years. Eventually, they moved to England, where Adam finished school. Adam participated in everything he possibly could pertaining to music, yet he never felt like he knew who he was as an artist. That all changed when he was working at a market in England as a teen and heard the song "Just Friends" by Musiq Soulchild. He immediately resonated with the soul-R&B sound. Once Adam discovered "Dirty Soul," he began to take interest in the greats such as Al Green and Sam Cooke, reconnecting with his Black roots. Currently, Adam and his wife reside in Minneapolis, and they're hoping to start a family of their own soon.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

The Daily Mess Taking Time Off For The Holiday And Who Do We Believe
I’m always asking questions. The fun begins when you start researching for answers. Who made it ok for employees to mentally and physically check out with the arrival of the holidays? Plus…Is it better to lie to someone or figure out a way to walk away? I’m Arroe… I am a daily writer. A silent wolf. I stand on the sidelines and do nothing but watch, listen study then activate. I call it The Daily Mess. A chronological walk through an everyday world. Yes, it’s my morning writing. The Album That Changed A Generation Red Hot + Blue From John Garrison
Released in 1990, this iconic album was the music industry’s first major response to the AIDS epidemic. Featuring contemporary pop performers like U2, Sinéad O'Connor, The Neville Brothers, and Annie Lennox, reinterpreting the music of Cole Porter, one of the great American songwriters of the early 20th century, the album sold more than a million copies worldwide. In his book, Red Hot + Blue, John S. Garrison explores the powerful intersection of music, activism, and personal memory through the lens of this iconic 1990 album .More than just a tribute to Cole Porter; RED HOT + BLUE was a groundbreaking project that united artists across genres and generations in the fight against AIDS. Released at the height of the epidemic, the album’s fusion of contemporary and classic sounds served as both a fundraiser and a platform for activism raising millions of dollars for HIV/AIDS charities. Capturing both the joy and melancholy that accompany love during turbulent times. It re-imagined those iconic songs - including “Don't Fence Me In,” “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” “Night and Day” - not just to celebrate the composer but also to offer a shared vision for survival. Garrison writes, “the album needed to jar people, to urge them to speak openly about what it meant to love even when the virus made connection increasingly more precarious. Porter’s music gives voice to a man unafraid to announce his desire for affection, even from those who rejected him and even in a world where many people disapproved of his kind of love. I can’t imagine a more fitting voice for the music industry’s first major response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.” In his book, Garrison reflects on his life story through the lens of Porter's life and music to illuminate the emotional landscape we all navigate in the search for love.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

The Navajo Paranormal Ranger Stanley Milford There's A Lot Of Unexplained Things On This Little Planet
"From dozens of Bigfoot sightings in the San Juan River Valley to a deeply disturbing UFO visitation near Satan's Butte to a poltergeist-like haunting of an office in Window Rock, the cases I investigated led me to one inevitable conclusion: There is so much more to this world and our vast universe than we can imagine, and we have only begun to scratch the surface." - From the Introduction In THE PARANORMAL RANGER: A Navajo Investigator's Search for the Unexplained (William Morrow; on sale 10/1/24), Stanley Milford Jr. delivers a gripping memoir of his investigations into perplexing cases of the paranormal and unexplained over the course of his illustrious career serving the Navajo Nation.Raised with a deep-rooted connection to the supernatural due to his diverse heritage grounded in Navajo and Cherokee traditions, Milford's upbringing uniquely positioned him to navigate the eerie realms he would encounter when he joined the fabled Navajo Rangers. Equal parts police officers, archeological conservationists, and historians, the rangers are responsible for overseeing the massive 27,000-square-mile Navajo Nation, where mundane tasks blend seamlessly with extraordinary occurrences. When Milford first became a ranger, he handled everyday cases such as cattle inspections and domestic disputes, but that quickly gave way to more bizarre cases of mysterious livestock mutilations, spine-chilling encounters with skinwalkers and cryptids, UFOs, and malicious hauntings.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Dr Anthony M D'Agostino Gets Out Front With Prejudice Racism And Tribalism
“There is a racial divide in America that does not serve us well,” concludes Dr. D’Agostino. “Prejudice, racism, and tribalism are characteristics of human society. This book is meant to be a primer for White people who seem unusually susceptible to political exploitation at this time in history. My hope is that if leaders have a better understanding of the long, historical view of human society, they’ll be inclined to buy fewer guns, ban few books, and have a better understanding of what it means to be a White American.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

But for Briar Woods, a dancer at Sadler’s Wells Ballet, the past resurfaces and brings her face to face with the truth – and now, it feels as though her war has only just begun. Since 1939, Rosamund Caradon had taken in many children from Britain’s bombarded cities, sheltering them in her Devonshire manor. Now, with Germany’s surrender, she is en route to London to return the last evacuees, accompanied by her dance-obsessed daughter Jasmine. Rosamund vows to protect Jasmine from any peril, but a chance meeting with a Sadler’s Wells dancer changes everything. When the beautiful, elusive Briar Woods bursts into Rosamund’s train carriage, it’s clear her sights are set on the captivated Jasmine. As Briar sets out to charm them both, Rosamund cannot shake the eerie feeling this accidental encounter isn’t what it seems. While Briar may be far away from the pointe shoes and greasepaint of The Sleeping Beauty ballet rehearsals, her performance for Rosamund might just be her most successful yet. 250 Years In The Making Fighting Spirit From Rich Hull And Chaplain Jeff Struecker
Combat chaplains wear uniforms, but carry no weapons. And their service can involve the ultimate sacrifice. For nearly 250 years, in every battle throughout our nation’s history, they’ve been there...quietly supporting soldiers while bullets flew by. Perhaps more than any other profession, diversity is their unique and inspirational strength because, while they may be Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, or Buddhist, when they’re on the front lines of combat, they support and stand-up for soldiers of all faiths...and no faith. When the remains of prisoner-of-war and Army combat chaplain Emil Kapaun (perhaps the Vatican’s next saint) are identified after 70 years, much of our nation is captivated by their journey home. As a younger former chaplain unexpectedly embarks on his own journey to greet them, he becomes inspired by the untold stories of the 419 U.S. military chaplain heroes who’ve given their lives for this unique calling. As the paths of these combat chaplains from different eras finally collide, we’re reminded how the profound weight of history and the immense power of love can converge to produce a life-changing healing.Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplain’s Journey marks the first-ever co-production between Hollywood and the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps. It is notable for having Pope Francis grant the filmmakers a rare preview at The Vatican, followed by sneak previews at the Army’s iconic Fort Knox, the Newport Beach Film Festival, and the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. AJ Foyt Survivor Champion Legend From Racing Historian Art Garner
A.J. Foyt: Survivor, Champion, Legend (Volume One, Octane Press, October 2024), an extensive and highly entertaining biography of one of America's most popular, colorful, and controversial sports heroes, is now available for order. Art Garner-an award-winning author and finalist for the prestigious PEN/ESPN award for literary sports writing for his bestselling book, Black Noon-has captured the action on and off the track that led many to consider Foyt to be one of the greatest race car drivers of all time-and one reporter to write that A.J. stood for "another jerk."Known for his fiery disposition and bare-knuckled approach, Foyt's driving career spanned five decades-six if you count an exhibition race when he was five years old. He was the first driver to win the Indianapolis 500 four times and still holds Indy car records for most victories and championships. He is the only driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Daytona 500, one version of auto racing's triple crown. He also won the International Race of Champions in 1976 and 1977 and still holds the world closed-course speed record that he set in 1987. "Statistics tell only part of the story," Garner says. "Foyt likes to say, 'I'm just A.J., ain't no different than any other man,' but nothing could be further from the truth. He's one of the most complex and intricate personalities in the history of auto racing, perhaps all of sports." The biography also explores the unique relationship between Foyt and his "Daddy," Anthony Joseph "Tony" Foyt Sr. Although they often clashed-it was Tony who said working with his son could be like "dancing with a buzzsaw"-A.J. called him "the only man I can trust." It was Tony who instilled in his son an overwhelming drive to be the best, teaching him that victory was expected, excellence assumed. And it was Tony who told a crowd celebrating A.J.'s fourth Indy 500 victory that his son had "done fair."Through tireless research and hundreds of hours of new interviews with Foyt, his family, friends, and the biggest names in motorsports-including Mario Andretti, Roger Penske, Al Unser Sr., Johnny Rutherford, Jackie Stewart, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, and many others-Garner has compiled an unprecedented look at Foyt's life and career. At 656 pages it includes ninety-five photos, some from Foyt's family albums, and fifty-five pages of source notes and index. Grateful Dead Historian Dennis McNally Talking About The Book The Silver Snarling Trumpet
For decades, passionate fans of the Grateful Dead have speculated about the contents of a "lost manuscript"-a sort of holy grail to the origin story of a band that is practically a religion for many.Indeed, THE SILVER SNARLING TRUMPET: The Birth of the Grateful Dead-The Lost Manuscript of Robert Hunter, has been pulled from the attic after more than 50 years. It will be published with a foreword by John Mayer (Dead & Co), an introduction by Dennis McNally (renowned historian of the Dead) and an afterword by Brigid Meier (a close confidant of Jerry Garcia's and core member of the early scene described in the book). As McNally writes in the foreword: "The subculture that became known as the Grateful Dead began as a cluster of relationships long before there as a band; Trumpet is the story of that earliest community."Essential reading for Dead Heads and anyone with an interest in early 60s counterculture, THE SILVER SNARLING TRUMPET is as Mayer puts it in the foreword, "a lost box of film that, when developed, reveals some of the most striking images you've ever seen, the kind that make you go slack jawed and your heart race." In these pages, readers are privy to the early days of Hunter, Jerry Garcia, and their cohorts, who sit at the coffee shop passing around a single cup of bottomless coffee because they lacked the funds for more than one. "We created our own culture simply by being friends and allowing that circle of friendship to expand organically," writes Hunter's friend Brigid Meier in a heartfelt Afterword. "If you thought you were one of us, you were welcome to join in."With the publication of this long awaited manuscript, we get to follow Hunter, Jerry Garcia, and the rest of the band into the stacks at Kepler's Books, to rent instruments at Swain's House of Music, and through the countryside on road trips. We witness impromptu jams, inspired intellectual pranks, and a dialogue that is, by turns, amusing and brilliant and outrageous. Hunter shares his impressions of his first gig with Garcia for a college audience, along with descriptions of his most intense dreams and psychedelic explorations. All of it is enlivened by Hunter's visionary spirit and profound ideas about creativity and collaboration. This is an exciting season for fans of the Dead: Robert Hunter's career-spanning archival series recently launched through Rhino; Dead & Co. just finished an engagement at The Sphere, and the band will be honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in December.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
