Writer Producer And Journalist Nat Segaloff 50 Years After Towering Inferno The Book Is More Fire
It wasn't the first or last of the disaster pictures, but it was the best of them all, yet its producer had no way of knowing that his career would never again reach those heights. The Towering Inferno (1974) was the crowning achievement of über-producer Irwin Allen, the self-proclaimed "Master of disaster." Crafted from two best-selling books and with a budget-busting cast headed by two mega-stars, it took two studios to bring it to the screen. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Towering Inferno this December, biographer-historian Nat Segaloff (who was a member of the film's special publicity unit) writes about the production, its innovative marketing campaign, and the goings-on before, during, and after its box office success. He draws a compelling, compassionate portrait of Irwin Allen, the workaholic filmmaker who craved the spotlight yet studiously hid his personal life. Segaloff also charts the history of fire in movies, draws personal profiles of the cast and crew, and offers modern fire safety tips that can save your life. More Fire! The Building of The Towering Inferno: A 50th Anniversary Explosion will bring back the excitement, the fear, and the heat of the greatest disaster movie ever made.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Racial Justice Educator Christine Saxman Releases The Book Being White Today
The idea that White people are under attack has permeated political discourse in recent elections. The election of 2024 will be no different. Being White Today: A Roadmap for a Positive Antiracist Life helps White people navigate the myriad messages they encounter about race. The book applies the White racial identity framework developed by psychologist Dr. Janet Helms to take a strong stance against racism. Using fictionalized scenarios and case studies, it offers a way to resist extremist messaging and recruitment. A helpful resource for White people who care about US society, in particular, White parents, educators, activists, and racial/social justice practitioners, this book also helps people understand antiracist messaging and how to use it strategically to create a larger community of White antiracists.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

The Daily Mess When Is It Time To Give Up On A Goal And Is Sauerkraut Good For Us
I’m Arroe… I am a daily writer. A silent wolf. I stand on the sidelines and do nothing but watch, listen study then activate. I call it The Daily Mess. A chronological walk through an everyday world. Yes, it’s my morning writing. As a receiver of thoughts and ideas, we as people tend to throw it to the side and deal with it later. When a subject arrives, I dig in. It’s still keeping a journal! Writer Producer And Podcaster Tyler Mahan Coe Releases The Book Cocaine And Rhinestones
From the creator of the acclaimed country music history podcast Cocaine & Rhinestones, comes the epic American saga of country music's legendary royal couple-George Jones and Tammy Wynette. By the early 1960s nearly everybody paying attention to country music agreed that George Jones was the greatest country singer of all time. After taking honky-tonk rockers like "White Lightning" all the way up the country charts, he revealed himself to be an unmatched virtuoso on "She Thinks I Still Care," thus cementing his status as a living legend. That's where the trouble started. Only at this new level of fame did Jones realize he suffered from extreme stage fright. His method of dealing with that involved great quantities of alcohol, which his audience soon discovered as Jones more often than not showed up to concerts falling-down drunk or failed to show up at all. But the fans always forgave him because he just kept singing so damn good. Then he got married to Tammy Wynette right around the time she became one of the most famous women alive with the release of "Stand by Your Man." Tammy Wynette grew up believing George Jones was the greatest country singer of all time. After deciding to become a country singer herself, she went to Nashville, got a record deal, then met and married her hero. With the pop crossover success of "Stand by Your Man" (and the international political drama surrounding the song's lyrics) came a gigantic audience, who were sold a fairy tale image of a couple soon being called The King and Queen of Country Music. Many fans still believe that fairy tale today. The behind-the-scenes truth is very different from the images shown on album covers.Illustrated throughout by singular artist Wayne White, Cocaine & Rhinestones is an unprecedented look at the lives of two indelible country icons, reframing their careers within country music as well as modern history itself. America's Deadliest Election From CNN's Dana Bash And Author David Fisher
CNN anchor and chief political correspondent Dana Bash has written her first book, AMERICA'S DEADLIEST ELECTION: The Cautionary Tale of the Most Violent Election in American History with bestselling author David Fisher. AMERICA'S DEADLIEST ELECTION recounts the extraordinary election that led to hundreds of murders, warfare in the streets of New Orleans, two governors of Louisiana - and changed the course of politics in our country. The Election of 1872 was the most contentious in American history. After both parties complained of corruption, neither candidate would concede, two governors claimed office and chaos erupted. Rival newspapers engaged in a bitter war of words, politicians plotted to overthrow the government, and their supporters fought in the streets and attempted assassinations. The entire country watched in grim fascination as the wounds of the Civil War were ripped open and the promise of President Grant's Reconstruction faltered in the face of violent resistance and the birth of the Ku Klux Klan. In this riveting book, Dana Bash and David Fisher tell the incredible, little-known story of the election that pushed democracy to the breaking point, and sparked historic eventsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Chris Kinnon From Lions In The Street Setting Free The Song Moving Along
Comprising the Brothers Kinnon (Chris on vocals and guitar; Jeff on drums), riff-master Sean Casey (guitar), and classically educated bass player Enzo Figliuzzi, the Canadian/California-based band has played with everybody from garage legends like the Dirtbombs to arena stars Kings of Leon, making SXSW best-of lists numerous times, and in between hanging out with the Rolling Stones’ legendary manager Andrew Loog Oldham. But putting integrity first had a cost: obscurity. Lions in the Street began their career by signing and then walking away from the troubled TVT Records (NIN, Pitbull, Little Jon), Nickelback’s 604 Records (Carly Rae Jepson), and legendary manager Allen Kovac (Motley Crue, The Cars, Blondie, The Bee Gees), earning them a spot on the music industry’s blacklist. Years in the wilderness resulted—working as a garbageman for almost a decade, surviving cancer, serious workplace injuries, and almost deadly car accidents, and going back to school. Yet, despite experiencing the best and worst of the of old music business—from hanging out with Todd Rundgren, Bob Ezrin, and R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, to seeing an A&R guy almost fired just for going to see them play—the band somehow kept going, releasing music piecemeal. For example, Lions in the Street released an EP in 2013 on British legend Sandy Roberton's label. Roberton ran Blue Horizon, the English label that launched the 60s British Blues rock movement with John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, and Rory Gallagher. Now the streaming platforms revolution has given Lions in the Street a new life an audience, allowing them to release largely-unheard music—finally finished and remixed/remastered. Actor Comedian And Podcaster Lauren Lapkus From The Podcast Haunting
Haunting shares weekly, real-life paranormal stories told by those who experienced them first-hand. Some will be unsettling... Some unnerving. And some are even downright terrifying! Haunting brings audiences into the story through first-hand accounts and immersive audio, giving listeners the feeling of coming face-to-face with the unexplainable. Comedian Lauren Lapkus plays the host, Theresa (Teh-rez-ah), an "influencer" who tragically died before she could get the proverbial "little blue check in life." Theresa is stuck in the Eternal Twilight until she figures out how to finish her "unfinished business." Just like when she was alive and active on every social media platform, Theresa promises to always give her audience the -- mostly -- unfiltered look into her life, now afterlife. But instead of snarky social commentary, OOTDs, and hyper-edited selfies, with the help of her producer, Len, and succubus from Hell turned intern, Naomi, Theresa aims to help the living see that ghosts are just former people who want to have a little fun like anyone else, even though it's often in the form of mortal fear and suffering. Believing that nothing says lifeless like a paranormal podcast hosted by a mere mortal, Therésa will present real first-hand accounts that bring listeners face-to-face with the unexplainable. The role of Therésa will be voiced by the quick-witted and hilarious comedian Lauren Lapkus, who starred in the projects The Wrong Missy, Netflix's The Characters, and Orange Is The New Black.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Former White House Security Advisor HR McMaster Releases At War With Ourselves
A revealing account of National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster's turbulent and consequential thirteen months in the Trump White House. At War with Ourselves is the story of helping a disruptive President drive necessary shifts in U.S. foreign policy at a critical moment in history. McMaster entered an administration beset by conflict and the hyper partisanship of American politics. With the candor of a soldier and the perspective of a historian, McMaster rises above the fray to lay bare the good, the bad, and the ugly of Trump's presidency and give readers insight into what a second Trump term would look like. While all administrations are subject to backstabbing and infighting, some of Trump's more unscrupulous political advisors were determined to undermine McMaster and others to advance their narrow agendas. McMaster writes candidly about Cabinet officials who, deeply disturbed by Trump's language and behavior, prioritized controlling the President over collaborating to provide the President with options. McMaster offers a frank and fresh assessment of the achievements and failures of his tenure as National Security Advisor and the challenging task of maintaining one's bearings and focus on the mission in a hectic and malicious environment. Determined to transcend the war within the administration and focus on national security priorities, McMaster forged coalitions in Washington and internationally to help Trump advance U.S. interests. Trump's character and personality helped him make tough decisions, but sometimes prevented him from sticking to them. McMaster adroitly assesses the record of Trump's presidency in comparison to the Obama and Biden administrations. With the 2024 election on the horizon, At War with Ourselves highlights the crucial importance of competence in foreign policy, and makes plain the need for leaders who possess the character and intellect to guide the United States in a tumultuous world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Marine Biologist Sally Hunter Takes Us Deep Into The Open Sea With Transfigured Sea
Sarah and Martha are women who live in the sea and on the coast. Their journey takes them through all aspects of the sea as they explore themselves and their relationship. Transfigured Sea is a work of literary fiction, written in prose with a few poems included. Minimal use of dialogue facilitates its dream-like atmosphere. This relationship undergoes many difficulties, as they travel. In the deep seabed, they face themselves and discover the healing light of bioluminescence. When Sarah finally walks back out onto the beach, she is full of stillness and silence. She is now self-sufficient and no longer dependent on the relationship with Martha. The major characters include Sarah who is a poet and a biologist. She has problems with her mother, who believes poetry to be morally wrong. Her mother also dominates and stifles Sarah. Sarah finds a shell on the beach which has a visionary quality. The other major character is Martha, sometimes known as the Sea Sprite. She was raped years ago, on land. She is gentle, but also self-centred. She makes sarcastic remarks and uses her wit to sidestep issues. The third major character is the sea itself. The plants and animals in the sea often parallel the lives of the two women. Themes include the role of the sea as a place of change and difficult personal growth. Another theme is the natural history of the ocean. The third theme is Ancient Greek mythology in terms of Nereides , or sea nymphs. They represent everything kind and beautiful about the sea and offer protection to those in distress. The settings are the various aspects of the sea, including the coast. These range from the beach to rocky coast, estuary, mangroves, shallow water, coral reef, open waters, Antarctica, a storm and the Deep. On the shores of the ocean, Laura and Daphne fantasize that they are mother and daughter, mother and Sea Spirit. They both have problems in their past, which they need to resolve. They set out to explore every aspect of the sea, from an estuary and mangroves to Antarctic waters and the deep ocean. Mother Sea is a whisper of emotion and a memory of intuition. She dwells in the subconscious. Sea creatures abound, from sea urchins and stingrays to dolphins and sharks. Some of these parallel the behavior of the women. Sea nymphs accompany them and they are assisted by a special conch shell. While they are exploring the sea, the women also explore their own make-ups. Laura remembers interactions with her own mother. Daphne needs healing.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

The Chicano Squad On A&E Jose Selvera's Steps Into An Unwritten Future As A Police Officer
The two-night documentary event The Chicano Squad, chronicles the groundbreaking team of bilingual patrol officers plucked from their beats and suddenly promoted to Detectives to form the first all-Latin homicide unit dedicated to tackling Houston’s soaring rate of Latin homicide cases in 1979. Dubbed “The Chicano Squad” by the Houston media, the story of these men who for the next three decades would earn the trust of the community and the department, becoming one of the most highly decorated law enforcement units in the history of Houston, is told through first-hand accounts of the original squad members and those impacted by their work.In 1979, six bilingual Mexican American Houston Police Department rookies, including José Selvera were given just 90 days to solve all open Latin murder cases, regain the trust of the community, and assist in any new crimes involving Spanish-speaking people. With no prior homicide experience, unchecked racism and discrimination at all levels of the department, a corrupt police union, the highest crime rate in the country, and an immigrant community that is distrustful of the police, this first–of-its-kind unit of crime fighters lacked experience in homicide investigation and were forced to learn on the job. After 90 days, The Chicano Squad members ultimately proved they belonged and successfully cleared 80% of their cases. What started as an experiment became a permanent and crucial part of Houston Police Department.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Foreign Agents From Journalist Casey Michel American Lobbyists And Lawmakers Threatening Democracy
Their names and the details of the crimes are often forgotten with the latest outrage. I know he's dirty, but what did Paul Manafort do again? Why did Bob Menendez have gold bars in his home? Remind me, who's Greg Craig? But as journalist Casey Michel shows in his page-turning and infuriating new book, FOREIGN AGENTS: HOW AMERICAN LOBBYISTS AND LAWMAKERS THREATEN DEMOCRACY AROUND THE WORLD (St. Martin's Press; August 27, 2024), these men are part of the same story. With some working in the shadows and some working at the most esteemed lobbying and law firms in the world, they are part of a billion-dollar bipartisan industry that influences politicians and whitewashes political violence on behalf of some of the world's most autocratic regimes. With each seemingly disparate case, Michel pieces together a damning narrative of greed and institutional failure. In FOREIGN AGENTS, Michel lays out the long history of foreign governments paying for access and puts today's unprecedented levels of lobbying in historical context, beginning with Ivy Lee, one of the founding fathers of political PR and a man both Hitler and Mussolini paid to shift American views of fascism in the 1930s. Every step along the way, we see examples of despotic and murderous leaders paying for reputation management from white-collar professionals, with little oversight or public attention. Each erosion of norms leads inexorably to 2016 and the eye-popping reality of Donald Trump's campaign being run "for free" by Paul Manafort, an amoral fixer who was both deeply in debt to Kremlin-backed oligarchs and had worked for years at the highest levels pushing anti-democratic Russian interests in Ukraine.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Living And Teaching By His Word Dr Josh McConkey Be The Weight Behind The Spear
“America, united, is unstoppable; America, divided, is an easy target,” writes Dr. McConkey. “If the powers that be spent as much time focusing on the actual future of the country and the development of our youth and communities as they do on the past, we would be much better prepared for the challenges that await us as a nation.“When we speak of the fundamental principles that set America apart from every other country in the world, it comes down to the people: each American —whether ordinary, hero, or superstar-can become the "weight behind the spear." Our family systems, teachers, coaches, and our volunteers provide the confidence, the security, and the weight behind each of us.”He divides his book into four parts: How to Be the Weight, How to NOT Be the Weight, Experiences That Shaped My Weight, and My Weight. In the first part, McConkey highlights the foundations of leadership drawn from experiences in combat, his childhood, and his time as a commander. In the next part, he shows how attributes of selfishness and greed rot America’s core principles and that foundation. In the third part, he offers anecdotal stories as an emergency physician around the world that illustrate what makes America unique as the shining beacon of freedom in the world. In the fourth part, McConkey describes how near-death experiences and his family have been the weight that shaped him as a leader and why it drives him to keep fighting for our American values. Be The Weight Behind the Spear is a call to action. “America is as divided generationally and politically as it has ever been,” asserts Col. McConkey. “But the strength of America has always been its people. Our teachers, families, coaches, mentors, and volunteers have the opportunity to shape America's future. America is always at its best when we are faced with a challenge, but only if we are prepared to meet that challenge.”Our national security and our future may just depend on it.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Actor Writer Comedian Business Woman Moon Zappa Releases The Book Earth To Moon
From Moon Unit Zappa, the daughter of musical visionary Frank Zappa, comes a memoir of growing up in her unconventional household in 1970s Los Angeles, coming of age in the Hollywood Hills in the 1980s as the "Valley Girl," gaining momentum as an accidental VJ on a new network called MTV, and finding herself after losing her father, then her mother, and the testing of her most important relationships. How can you navigate life as the "normal" child of an extraordinary creative? What is it like to live in a hothouse of individuality that on one hand fosters freedom of expression, and on the other tamps down the basic desires of a child for boundaries and affection? Should you call your parents Frank and Gail from birth? For Moon Unit Zappa, processing a life so punctuated by the whims of genius, the tastes of popular culture, the calculus of celebrity, and the nature of love, was at times eviscerating, at times illuminating-but mostly deeply confusing. Yes, this is a book about growing up in the shadow of Frank Zappa. Moon and her family were a source of constant curiosity, for their unique names and for their father's reputation as a musical savant and fierce protector of the First Amendment, even though he was never a commercial success. Searching for her own path, first as her father's inadvertent musical collaborator and public sidekick with their surprise mega radio hit, then as an actress, an artist, a spiritual person, a wife and mother, Moon Unit calculates ever-changing equations of fame, family, death and ultimately legacy when dealt the shocking news that Gail's will established an unequal distribution among the remaining, tight-knit Zappas, catalyzing a quest for meaning and redemption. With love, humor, and humility, Earth to Moon reminds us that every family is faced with problems that are unique to their particular makeup, but the journey to growing into yourself with grace is as universal as it gets.
