The video went viral and led to collaborations with P. Diddy, Andre Harrell and Stevie Wonder. In 2019, Mac's beloved grandmother passed away, and a year later he lost his father. Alien Investigator Adam Frank Releases The Little Book Of Aliens
Adam Frank-an "alien optimist" who is well-known for his commentary on national TV, radio and in print-provides a user-friendly crash course on everything we know-or may soon know-about intelligent life in the universe. As Frank acknowledges, like-minded scientists who are interested in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) long faced scorn from their "serious" colleagues, who mostly tried to distance themselves from the "giggle factor": wacky conspiracy theories and the Hollywoodized scenario of little green men. But that skepticism is waning, as interest and, more importantly, funding for SETI have increased in the scientific community and beyond, and-thanks in part to Adam's original research-as we finally have the answers for how and where to go looking. "The human species is poised at the edge of its greatest and most important journey," Frank writes. "Over the past three decades, the scientific search for life in the universe-a field called astrobiology-has exploded. We've discovered planets everywhere in the galaxy, and we've figured out how and where to look for signs of alien life in the atmospheres of these new worlds. We've also looked deep into Earth's almost four-million-year history as an inhabited world. From this view, we've gained new and powerful insights into how planets and life evolve together.. We've also sent robot emissaries to every planet in our solar system. With their wheels or landing pads on the ground, we've begun searching these neighbor worlds for evidence of life existing now or perhaps deep in their past. Most important, we have launched and are building insanely powerful, next-generation telescopes. With these tools, we'll finally go beyond just yelling our opinions about life in the universe at each other."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Dan Pompei Releases The Book The Football 100
From The Athletic, powerhouse of sports reporting, comes the definitive story of the greatest football players of all time: THE FOOTBALL 100 (William Morrow; on sale October 24, 2023). It is a question that has bedeviled football fans for generations: Who's the best? Of the more than 25,000 men who have suited up during the NFL's century of existence, which ones stood head and shoulders above all others? At The Athletic, home to unrivaled reporting on the most important happenings in sports, this question would become a labor of love for dozens of the best football writers on the planet, including Mike Sando and Dan Pompei. Over the course of 100 riveting profiles-each drawing upon unparalleled access and superlative storytelling to offer intimate perspective on what made the greatest players tick-these writers reveal their findings. In the process, they also uncover the history of football. In the early days of the NFL, the game bore little resemblance to the product we see today. Points were scarce, the forward pass was an exotic strategic curiosity, and most players played all 60 minutes-both sides of the ball. It was on the shoulders of the many greats who starred in the League over the last century that the game of football blossomed. Each profile in THE FOOTBALL 100 uses the vivid narrative storytelling for which The Athletic is known to bring to life extraordinary athletic talents, tactical geniuses who changed the way the game is played, and legendary, outsized personalities. Based on many hundreds of interviews with players, coaches, broadcasters, and others, this is a penetrating look at the greatest players to ever don cleats and pads, as well as a view from the trenches of the harsh realities of a brutal game. 100 photographs throughout the text offer testament to both the glory and the physical toll of football.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

As the ensuing pandemic raged, we faced one constant-a lack of consistent, scientifically sound, and trusted information about dangers, risks, and mitigation strategies that the average person could understand and put into practice to keep themselves and their families safe. Politicians, opportunists, and agenda-driven media personalities spread misinformation for an array of purposes, leaving most of the public scratching their heads, wondering what was true and what wasn't. Now, the former Surgeon General of the United States-freed from the many constraints he worked under in public office-reveals critical lessons learned from both mistakes and successes overlooked during the pandemic. He explains what we need to know to create a safer environment for individuals, families, and communities, how we can respond better to the next threat, why we keep making the same mistakes, and why we must promote health equity for all. As Dr. Adams explains, the best public health policies are the ones that begin at home and come about as people in local communities work together to find solutions that fit their specific priorities and needs. Only through this bottom-up, community-driven approach will we be able to turn down the volume on the distracting noise, finally make our way out of and recover from a once-in-a-century pandemic, and prepare ourselves for inevitable future health crises.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Michael Azerrad Releases The Book The Amplified Come As You Are The Story Of Nirvana
"Kurt screams in a code that millions can understand. He communicates in the same scattershot, intuitive way that his generation has been trained to assimilate and to express information, thanks to the usual litany of tens of thousands of hours of television advertising before they were even able to read, lousy schools, the glut of the information age, video games, etc. Kurt's lyrics make unusual sense of chaos. When he screams "a denial, a denial" over and over again at the end of "Teen Spirit," it's something that is understood on a deep level. And either you get it or you don't. It clearly draws the lines, even as it deals in universals. And it's one of the most transcendent moments in rock music." - from the book In 1993, a young rock journalist named Michael Azerrad published Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana, an era-defining deep dive into Nirvana at their peak. Invited to write the book by Courtney Love, and with Kurt Cobain's blessing and the front man's promise he wouldn't make him change a word, Azerrad set out to tell the true story of the revolutionary band. Thirty years on, Azerrad has revisited the book he wrote back then, re-examining and illuminating what he originally reported, and providing essential glosses on the band's musical, cultural and historical contexts. The result is a thoroughly original book: THE AMPLIFIED COME AS YOU ARE (Harper One; October 24, 2023), a deluxe hardcover edition that fascinatingly "amplifies" the iconic bestseller. "Rereading this book for the annotated edition, I began to notice some patterns that I hadn't noticed when I was in the thick of writing the original version," says Azerrad, whose 2021 New Yorker piece touching on his friendship with Kurt Cobain became one of the magazine's most-read stories of the year. "Maybe I was too young to see them; maybe I was looking the other way because I was smitten by my subject; maybe I had to work too fast to notice such things. The idea behind THE AMPLIFIED COME AS YOU ARE is to comment on my 1993 book: to illuminate what's there, and mine it for insights on Nirvana, its members, and the time in which the band existed."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Rikki Schlott Releases The Book The Cancelling Of The American Mind
In THE CANCELING OF THE AMERICAN MIND: Cancel Culture Undermines Trust, Destroys Institutions, and Threatens Us All-But There is a Solution (October 10, 2023/$29.99 hardcover), Greg Lukianoff (co-author of the bestseller The Coddling of the American Mind) and Rikki Schlott offer the first accurate survey of the phenomenon of Cancel Culture since it exploded onto the scene in 2014. Cancel culture is a destructive force that has upended lives, ruined careers, undermined companies, hindered research, destroyed trust in institutions, and plunged us into an ever-worsening culture war. What at first seemed like just another bit of campus craziness has spread far beyond universities. It now infects journalism, the arts, nonprofits, K-12 education, and even medicine. More and more, modern discourse focuses on a moralistic evaluation of the speaker rather than on the merit and validity of their ideas. "If you can show someone to be 'bad' by any measure, you don't have to listen to them anymore," Lukianoff and Schlott note. "Today, basically anything can be used to dismiss someone as 'bad' depending on your political orientation-from dubbing them 'conservative' to accusing them of being 'woke.'" The authors note that over the last several decades, the institutions tasked with teaching us how to argue productively have failed to do so-most notably, American higher education. At the same time, the rise of social media has made every institution, every individual, and every idea subject to the scrutiny of millions of eyes-and vulnerable to being torn down. "Personal attacks, dismissive clichés, and an ever-growing body of taboos abound in virtual discourse," the authors write. "These destructive methods of argumentation caught on like wildfire for a simple reason: they help people assert moral superiority and 'win' arguments by simply shutting down the other side..Why bother meaningfully refuting one's opponents when canceling them is an easier option? Just take away their platform or career. Nobody else will dare to tread the same ground once you make an example of them." The good news is that there are concrete solutions. "We don't have to argue like this," the authors note. "We can choose to discuss problems in a solutions-oriented way. We can declare a truce with our political opponents and set some ground rules that might help us survive-or even thrive-as a nation. And we can start to appreciate the benefits of living in a country as ideologically diverse as our own."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Photographer David Alexander Releases Pictures Of Time
Acclaimed commercial photographer, David Alexander, built his reputation early in his career by creating album covers for The Eagles and Blues Brothers among other 70’s rock bands as well as movie posters for iconic films like THE TERMINATOR. He was responsible for the album cover photography of the 1978 Grammy-winning Eagles' Hotel California. The front cover depicts The Beverly Hills Hotel at sunset. He shot the image 60 feet above Sunset Boulevard on top of a cherry picker with the light and unfamiliar vantage point giving it a slightly sinister look in keeping with the Album’s theme. A critical and commercial success, Rolling Stone named Hotel California the 5th best album cover of all time and the highest rated pure photography cover. Hotel California went on to incredible success, becoming a 1970s cultural landmark, cementing Alexander's reputation in the entertainment industry and beyond. Alexander has now focused his attention on understanding the meaning behind images. In PICTURES OF TIME, he explores the intersection of science, art, and, perhaps, philosophy. Described as "photography that makes you think." the images are arranged as a contemplation of time, raising thought-provoking questions such as what is time and can time really be seen? Ben Greenman Releases The Sly Stone Book Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin
Not many memoirs are generational events. But when Sly Stone, one of the few true musical geniuses of the last century, decides to finally tell his life story, it can't be called anything else. As the front man for the sixties pop-rock-funk band Sly and the Family Stone, a songwriter who created some of the most memorable anthems of the 1960s and 1970s ("Everyday People," "Family Affair"), and a performer who electrified audiences at Woodstock and elsewhere, Sly Stone's influence on modern music and culture is indisputable. But as much as people know the music, the man remains a mystery. After a rapid rise to superstardom, Sly spent decades in the grips of addiction. Now he is ready to relate the ups and downs and ins and outs of his amazing life in his memoir, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin). The book moves from Sly's early career as a radio DJ and record producer through the dizzying heights of the San Francisco music scene in the late 1960s and into the darker, denser life (and music) of 1970s and 1980s Los Angeles. Set on stages and in mansions, in the company of family and of other celebrities, it's a story about flawed humanity and flawless artistry. Written with Ben Greenman, who has also worked on memoirs with George Clinton and Brian Wilson, and in collaboration with Arlene Hirschkowitz, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) is a vivid, gripping, sometimes terrifying, and ultimately affirming tour through Sly's life and career. Like Sly, it's honest and playful, sharp and blunt, emotional and analytical, always moving and never standing still.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Bill O'Reilly Releases Killing The Witches The Horror Of Salem Massachusetts
New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestsellers, Bill O'Reilly's Killingseries is the most popular series of narrative histories in the world. Killing the Witches revisits one of the most frightening and inexplicable episodes in American history: the events of 1692 and 1693 in Salem Village, Massachusetts. What began as a mysterious affliction of two young girls who suffered violent fits and exhibited strange behavior soon spread to other young women. Rumors of demonic possession and witchcraft consumed Salem. Soon three women were arrested under suspicion of being witches--but as the hysteria spread, more than 200 people were accused. Thirty were found guilty, twenty were executed, and others died in jail or their lives were ruined. Killing the Witches tells the dramatic history of how the Puritan tradition and the power of early American ministers shaped the origins of the United States, influencing the founding fathers, the American Revolution, and even the Constitutional Convention. The repercussions of Salem continue to the present day, notably in the real-life story behind The Exorcist and in contemporary "witch hunts" driven by social media. The result is a compulsively readable book about good, evil, community panic, and how fear can overwhelm fact and reasonBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Marta McDowell Releases The Book Gardening Can Be Murder
What is it about the garden that suits it to literary murder? Perhaps it is the poisonous plants, sharp tools, shady corners, and ready-made burial sites that make gardens a mainstay in the mystery genre. Perhaps it is the gardeners (and writers) themselves, with their “natural malice toward weeds, rodents, and other garden undesirables. Rare is the gardener who can approach a slug without homicidal intent.” No matter the motive, gardening and writing are enduringly linked. Chef Writer Andrew Friedman Releases The Book The Dish
You'll never look at a restaurant meal the same way again. As you've probably noticed, much recent food- and restaurant related media has focused on previously unheralded, unsung kitchen and farm workers, and on related issues such as immigration, operating expenses, and sustainable sourcing. Perhaps you've covered some of these topics yourself. In THE DISH, author Andrew Friedman-who's been reporting and broadcasting about chefs and kitchen culture for nearly 25 years-stitches together all these threads by profiling the key restaurant and farm employees whose lives and work culminate in a single dish at an independent Chicago restaurant. Told in real time during a dinner service, the book tracks one dish (a deceptively simple composition of aged strip loin, tomato, and sorrel) at Wherewithall restaurant from the moment it's ordered by the guests at a table to when it's completed and presented to them. During the intervening hour, as elements of the dish are prepared, cooked, and brought together on the plate, we meet the people who made the dish possible. Friedman, who refers to himself a "chef writer" rather than a "food writer" recognizes the shift in industry and media culture the book represents: "Like many authors and journalists, for years I almost exclusively profiled chefs," he says. "It's long past time that we also recognize and celebrate the others-in and out of restaurants-who make crucial contributions every day."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.
