NO ENTRY! Exposing The Barriers To Entry Within The Architecture Industry, ft. Laurence Richards and Joe Maguire
One of the analogies I often use to visualise the Architecture Industry is like trying to get into a club. You’re an enthusiastic Architecture Graduate trying to get in the club known as the “Industry”. From the outside, you see all the happy people, however, in front of you is a grumpy bouncer holding the entrance past the rope barrier.“No UK experience?! Back of the queue!” “NEVER used BIM?! Hmmmph, I don’t think this is the right place for you” “Under 3 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE?!… Back of the line!”“But but but… I have my portfolio with me?” “YEAH YEAH… MOVE ASIDE!”And so you wait for hours, days, months. Watching all the people go inside. You see one of your friends go in quicker than you. How is this fair?!It isn’t fair. And the bouncer doesn’t want to know about it. So what can you do?I’m joined by Joe Maguire and Laurence Richards of the Architecture Practice Ackroyd Lowrie to give their insights on the current barriers to entry within the Architecture Industry as well as their top tips on how to speed entry into the profession.📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

What has Augmented and Mixed Reality got to do with Architecture?
Whatever happened to QR Codes and overlaid information in the real world?Does Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR) still play a role in the architectural design and construction of our built environment? So far we have been exploring Architecture in the Metaverse together. Why are most Architecture Practices’ websites COMPLETELY USELESS!
If you've ever been job seeking, you've probably looked at over a hundred Architecture Practice's online which includes scrolling through their websites. Some are an absolute job, with beautiful images and a great user interface which glides you from one project to another with a gentle touch. The vast majority of Architecture Practices' websites on the other hand deserve to be taken to the Web-design JAIL for serial offences such as slow-loading websites, unclear menu structure, absolutely empty Archi-Jargon, HUGE images or even hidden contact details. These are a few, there are a lot of others. I'm joined from across the pond, Bryon McCartney who is co-founder of ArchMarkTogether we will discuss:- How branding and marketing makes firms more resilient in a recession- Blogging to build your reputation and reach and perhaps most importantly of all what his team learned from evaluating more than 600 architecture firm websites.📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

Neil Pinder and GLAM GOES GLOBAL!
GLAM is an acronym for GUCCI, LOUIS VUITTON ARCHITECTURE & ME.Popular culture has traditionally been influenced by the designs of iconic brands such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton fashion houses, but the tongue-in-cheek parodying of counterfeit culture (known as Bootlegs) is a trend that has gained popularity in recent years. Through this popular culture, we can attract and enthuse young creatives to learn about architecture, and engineering either those choosing university courses or university students wanting to belong to a community of like-minded people. GLAM activities develop the tools, language and critical thinking required to create wearable architectures. GLAM is pioneered by Neil Pinder who has taught in a number of inner-city schools for over 25 years, working with London Open House for much of that time. He has been a trustee of Blue Print (formerly the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust) for the past 15 years. Currently Head of Product Design and Architecture at Graveney School in south London, where he introduced Architecture to the curriculum, winning various Open House competitions and being honoured as "Open House Teacher of the Year". 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

What Does The Future Of Work Look Like For The Architecture Profession?
We’re going through changes in the Architecture Industry, some better than others, depending on whether you’re the hiring manager or working within a practice and your company’s culture. It’s been over a year since we returned to work. Before the pandemic, most Architecture Practices were working full-time in offices. Many thought it would be impossible to work remotely yet we powered through. Some companies have brought with them flexible working either remote or hybrid, while some are returning to work full time.On top of that recently in the spotlight, we’ve seen several articles in the news that highlight frustration among Architecture Professionals for unpaid overtime, returning to work fulltime and stagnant salaries. So with all that in mind, what will the future of work within the Architecture Profession look like for those who practice in the industry?Join me in an open and interactive session where I will share my trends on where I see the industry going in the next few months as well as highlight your thoughts and comments.📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

Why are most Architecture Job Boards and Recruiter Websites so RUBBISH!?
Searching for a job is like a job in itself. Anyone who disagrees hasn't had the misfortune of clicking through a thousand websites to find their job.Honestly, it can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Except the hay is actually sharp needles which asks for all your personal data, crashes and ghosts you when you've handed everything over.Sometimes the job is out of date, if you can find it to begin with because the search function was coded someone who has never worked in your industry and sometimes you've got to hand over every bit of private data known to mankind to submit an application.Should you be fortunate enough to be one of the lucky ones who gets an interview, perhaps you find that the actual salary of the position is ten thousand pounds less than what you are currently on or a two-hour commute from where you live. Most Architecture Job Boards and Recruitment Websites are BAD and make finding a job more painful than it already is. Does it really need to be this DIFFICULT?Join me in an open conversation with Aylin Round where we will learn more about how she plans to change the formula with her new job board (www.archjobs.co.uk) and I can share a few of the ideas we are working on at the Architecture Social to make job seeking as easy as possible.Alongside the good, we will also discuss the bad and the ugly. Alternative Careers in Architectural Photography, ft. Chris Hopkinson
Often we've talked here on the Architecture Social about alternative careers in Architecture. How to move Client-Side as an Architect to a Developer or Main Contractor
With the rising cost of living and crashing economy in the UK, you wouldn't be the only Architect thinking about moving Client-Side.After all, I can see why many would think it would be appealing to work in real estate on the Developer's team or perhaps as part of a Main Contractor instead of an Architecture Practice.Over the years I've seen several Architects successfully move client-side, and an awful lot that have wanted to make the jump but have fallen short of making the shortlist and given up.My guest and ex-colleague Stephen Glands has helped a lot of Architects make this transition successfully, he is also used to my antics which makes him the perfect well of wisdom for us to pick his brains!Join us to learn how to move Client-Side successfully and what mistakes to avoid when sending your applications to make sure you don't get lost in the inbox! 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

I met David years ago when I decided to leave Architecture to become something else, I didn't know what at the time, so I fell into a career in recruitment. For many, it's a stepping stone for those leaving Architecture to become something else. David's career since then has boomed as an Artist. Far from a side hustle after hours while working an architecture job, he has his own studio, has been featured in several exhibitions and is an artist in residence for Liberty London. Pretty cool eh?! Join us in an open conversation on his journey of leaving behind practising Architecture to become a full-time artist who can pay the bills without doing the all-nighters! 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

I'm an underpaid and overworked Architect... GET ME OUT OF HERE!
Have you ever been working midnight hours in the office to meet a deadline and quietly thought to yourself, "What am I doing with my life?". OK, that's kind of dramatic. Perhaps you've seen your friend who works in the real estate industry's new Tesla and thought, "I could never afford that!". OK ok... that is unrealistic. Who would buy a tesla with the current energy rates anywho?! Perhaps your energy provider has sent you a recent energy plan renewal at 3,500,000% of the original, and you've thought "is there any other way to put my good skills to use to earn a few extra pounds so I can charge my phone!?" You may or may not be aware that some Architectural Professionals have transitioned into other jobs in different sectors such as Property Development, working for a Main Contractor or other creative industries such as journalism. On tonight's podcast, I am joined by Julia Adler (Senior BIM Manager at Mace), Bharat Pankhania (Senior Design Manager at Laing O'Rourke), Giorgio Lo Porto (BIM Manager at Mace), as well as the fantastic Michael Hudson (Digital Building Expert at Turner & Townsend) in an open and unscripted discussion. Join us where I will be asking our guests about... how the journey was moving away from traditional Architecture, if the working conditions and rewards are any different and if there is anything they miss after the transition. As well as any other interesting questions from the audience. 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

I’m an Architect... but how do I also become a successful Content Creator? ft. Thomas Rowntree
Chances are that if you're watching this episode, you've also studied Architecture and worked in the industry. If you're also not living under a rock or have successfully gotten your life together, unlike me, then you probably also understand what social media is because you're watching far too much random stuff on Youtube, browsing pointlessly through Instagram as well as procrastinating on LinkedIn while pretending to be working. For us mere mortals who scroll the Reels on our way to work, perhaps you've thought about what it's like to be a content creator. Is it a lot of hard work to be successful? Is it worth it? Does it make money or bring fame and kudos? Or is it a hindrance to your day-to-day career? I'm joined here by an awesome Architectural Professional who I've met both online and in person; Thomas Rowntree is a talented Part II Architectural Assistant who practices in Industry alongside consistently producing high-quality, engaging content for his Youtube Channel. Join me in an unscripted live stream where we have an informal conversation shedding some insight on what it's like to be a full-time professional as well as a successful content creator. 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

How can graphic design and branding enhance the built environment? .ft Chris Ritter at C-90
How can graphic design and branding enhance the built environment? Often we discuss the importance of the architectural design within a project, or perhaps the structural engineering and mechanical engineering as critical components to the success of an architectural project - however, I've often wondered how graphic design and branding can enhance architectural projects and the built environment? I am joined by Chris Ritter, a Director of C-90, a creative agency and culture lab serving clients that need to be noticed to explore this subject. Northern Michigan University (NMU) recently asked C-90 to create a visual identity to increase their visibility and public awareness; it presented a fascinating design problem. Join us in an open discussion on how C-90 approached the brief of enhancing the built environment of NMU and the broader question of how graphic design and branding can improve the built environment. Is Architecture REALLY accessible for all to study and practice in reality? ft. Sumita Singha
With the cost of living crisis, rising costs to study architecture, and living in a post-Brexit world (for all of our UK listeners), a key question that comes to mind is whether Architecture REALLY is accessible for all to study and practice in reality anymore? To help delve deeper into this ongoing quandary I am lucky enough this week to be joined by Sumita Singha, a chartered architect, author and teacher, with a passion for the environment, equity and ethics who received an OBE for services to architecture in 2021.Keen to support the next generation of architects she has lectured on architecture and technical design for over 25 years in the UK and abroad. As part of seeing more inclusion and equity in the profession, she set up Architects For Change, the equality forum at RIBA, and chaired Women in Architecture as well as being a co-founder of Asian Architects CIC.Her own experiences of disability have given me an awareness of the importance of patient-focused healthcare as well as becoming a Non-Executive Director in the NHS for nine years. 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

Cultural Intelligence within Architecture Practice, ft. Marsha Ramroop
Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is the key to us working better together, with a diversity of people, in Architecture.Research in the area of Diversity and Inclusion shows that having a mix of people in an organisation is not enough to create better outcomes, you have to have an inclusive culture too. Some quick stats show organisations with inclusive cultures are 8-times more likely to have overall better business outcomes, 6-times more likely to be innovative and twice as likely to meet or exceed financial targets. With that in mind, how do we start on this journey to become more culturally inclusive in the Architecture workplace? Marsha Ramroop was the first trailblazer of inclusivity at the RIBA as their Director of Inclusion and is the director of Unheard Voice, an award-winning consultancy for Equity, Diversity & Inclusive culture change in organisations using Cultural Intelligence. You can contact Marsha and find out more here: https://www.unheardvoice.co.uk/ 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

Is The Bartlett the tip of an iceberg of a toxic culture within Architecture Education?
Two weeks ago an independent investigation report of The Bartlett School of Architecture exposed a toxic learning and teaching culture. The AJ reported it as the biggest open secret in Architecture, Dezeen said its shocking and unsurprising at the same time. Maryam Al-Irhayim, Vice President for Students and Associate Members (Part I's and Part II's) at the RIBA recently wrote an article discussing the bullying and discrimination that many students have echoed to her from their experiences studying to enter Architecture. What do you think about the recent events? Is this overreaction or perhaps it's a serious problem in Architecture education that needs to be properly addressed? 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

Who is Muyiwa Oki and why is he running for the RIBA Presidency in the 2022 election?
It's that time of year at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) where the candidate nominations in the current elections have been announced and hustings are in place. For the few engaged RIBA members, this is an important moment that could invoke change. Equally, there are many members who perhaps have grown tired and jaded with the institute as of late and elections feel pretty pointless. Why do I say that? A bold claim? Well, the last election the turnout was just 13.2 percent. And to be honest, I can understand why - I've never felt compelled to vote historically before. Well, it's time that you and I need to wake up as it's a little bit different this year. Yes, that's right, in this election, there are three candidates running for the presidency. Two established and respected members of the RIBA council and board as well as a promising outsider called Muyiwa Oki. Who is Muyiwa Oki, what are his beliefs and why is he running this year? It's a good question, join me in an informal conversation to find out why should you vote this year if you've never voted before and ask him any questions. 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com

Learning to Adapt and Flow with Damon Bowen-Ashwin
After 15 years in design and construction recruitment, a brain tumour diagnosis at the end of 2019 turned out to be just the nudge Damon needs to change careers and find his life purpose in life….as a Life Coach….Some words from DamonLife began at 40. If you’d have told me a year ago that growth of my brain tumour was the best thing that ever happened to me, I wouldn’t have believed you! In fact, I’d have been petrified as well as angry and upset that there had been any post op growth! I’m nearly at the end of chemotherapy having already completed radiotherapy last autumn, and I’ve never been so happy and in love with life. I’m now on a mission to prove to myself and the world that we can do anything if we put our mind to it – I wholeheartedly believe this to be true. If you want to change the world, change the way you look at it, and you’ll be amazed at what starts to happen. Start by loving yourself unconditionally, and then the rest will fall into place, and maybe, just maybe, amazing things will happen….Come and join me for the journey through my video diaries – I’d love to inspire others to tap into their inner strengthSocial medial links can be found at:https://www.adaptandflow.co.uk/ 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level💻 Find out more at https://www.architecturesocial.com
