A New Way of Being is about realising that we are already enough. So much of today’s High Performance culture stems from a sense of inadequacy, pushing us to chase what we already are. But it’s a trap—you can’t become what you already are. This isn’t about being passive or lazy, but about shifting our intention. Instead of proving our worth, we express it.
Take Perspective From History: Professor Suzannah Lipscomb
What can reflecting on history teach us about living well now? In this episode we are talking about learning lessons from history, particularly perspective and empathy. We also question what impact the suppression of the 'feminine principle', as has happened over the last two thousand years, has had. In the first half we talk about getting in flow, digital minimalism, tapping into creativity, the importance of making complex concepts understandable, the perennial problem of tribalism and much more besides.
Professor Suzzanah Lipscomb is an award-winning historian, author and broadcaster. She hosts the 'Not Just the Tudors' podcast, produced by History Hit. She has presented numerous TV programmes including The Royals: A History of Scandals; has written and edited seven books, most recently, What is History, Now? with Helen Carr; is Professor Emerita at the University of Roehampton; Senior Member at St Cross College, Oxford; and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Society of Antiquaries; she was formerly Research Curator at Hampton Court Palace and has won multiple awards throughout her career.

What Podcasting Has Taught Me About Connection: Dr Rangan Chatterjee

Harness The Power Of Lucid Dreaming For Psychological Growth: Charlie Morley
We spend a third of our lives asleep - so why not use some of that time to learn, heal from past traumas and grow psychologically and even physically? Charlie Morley is a teacher of lucid dreaming, which is where you are asleep and in a dream, but you know that you are dreaming and can start to consciously direct your dream at will. It's a practice that has been used for thousands of years by Buddhists, mystics and shamans - and science has now caught up, proving the undoubted power lucid dreaming can provide.
Charlie has been lucid dreaming for over twenty years and was authorised to teach within the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism in 2008. He is also a multiple best-selling author and teacher of shadow integration. In this episode we discuss:
what's going on in the brain during a lucid dream
how science has caught up and proven its efficacy - including in terms of physical benefits for athletes
what the psychological benefits can be - from dealing with traumas to addictions and phobias
working with your 'shadow' (parts of your unconscious mind normally out of reach in the waking state)
what to do when you are in a lucid dream for maximum benefit
the key practices to start lucid dreaming tonight

Why You Should Find A Way To Do What You love: Goldie Sayers
“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”
People often talk about the importance of marginal gains, and improving by 1% in as many areas as possible. However, most of the top performers I have spoken to say by far the most important thing is consistent effort over a long period of time. But finding the fuel to maintain the necessary level of consistency is doing what you love.

BITESIZE: Success Is Not the Key To Happiness - Caitlyn Jenner
Success is not synonymous with happiness. So many high performers reach the top of the proverbial Everest only to discover that it did not provide the lasting satisfaction that it seemed to promise. One such person is Caitlyn Jenner, who won gold in the Olympic decathlon in 1976. However, the issues that were bubbling away under the surface were free to reassert themselves once the Games were over.

Showing up each day and doing the work: Ryan Holiday
How you do anything is how you do EVERYTHING. What matters is what you do today. That’s the message Stoic author Ryan Holiday emphasises in this bitesize episode.
Ryan has written a number of best-selling books on stoicism, including The Obstacle is the Way. He described stoicism as 'the most practical of all philosophies', and he explains that - in his view - it is important to understand that it is our actions that define us, and every moment is a chance to do and be our best. That doesn’t mean we will always succeed – but it does mean we can try.

Breaking Down Barriers Through Skillful Conversation: Neuroscientist Shane O'Mara
The power of skillful conversation - from the personal to the global level.
This week's conversation is with professor Shane O'Mara, a neuroscientist of the top order who is professor of Experimental Brain Research at Trinity College Dublin. He is also the author of Talking Heads: The New Science of How Conversations Shapes Our World. Shane explains the role that conversation and memory has in our ability to envisage a better future.
We talk about lots in this episode including the difference between the narrative self - the 'story of me' made up of memories, beliefs and the like - and the 'aware self', which experiences the present moment directly. Most people identify with the former and not the latter - but is that really wise?
Shane also explains how countries are created by conversations, and are ideas rather than real entities, and he shares some powerful and proven conversational tools to bridge gaps, break down walls and dissolve the propensity some people have to dehumanize 'the other'. We also discuss the Hard Problem of Consciousness.

The power of letting go of the need for a specific outcome to go your way.
We are halfways through the Strictly Come Dancing season 2023, so what better time than now to revisit my conversation with glitterball favourite and former Strictly champion Kevin Clifton. Kevin was runner up on four occasions while on the show, which triggered some of his old competitive wounds, before finally lifting the trophy with his now wife Stacey Dooley. How? Clearly the chemistry didn't hurt - but nor did his change in outlook and willingness to surrender rather than feel the need to achieve a specific outcome

Embracing failure to get ahead - with the pioneer of psychological safety Amy Edmonson
Embracing the right type of failure with the groundbreaking pioneer of psychological safety, who was voted the most influential international thinker in 2019. Professor Amy Edmonson's work has transformed the culture of leading companies, universities and organisations around the world - and her thinking can change your life too.
Amy argues that we need to embrace failure - as long as it is the right kind of failure. She differentiates between intelligent failure, complex failure and basic failure. We need to embrace the former, and avoid the latter two.
Professor Edmonson explains exactly what psychological safety is, how to foster it and how important it is - and how it fits in to intelligent failures.

Treating people as you want to be treated with boxing legend Carl Frampton, Northern Ireland’s first two weight World Champion. Carl grew up in Belfast, in the loyalist area of Tigers Bay. The next housing estate across was the New Lodge which was Republican. As a child, he witnessed tension and traumatising scenes. Carl is a very humble and level headed guy, and he takes pride in uniting people, wherever they're from, and whatever they believe. Beyond superficial differences - he is keen to emphasise we are all the same and that developing peace is possible

How Real Is Reality: Professor Donald Hoffman
Just how accurate is the reality we experience through our sense perceptions? That's a big question - and we're about to explain why it is important.
We tend to be convinced that that world we experience through our senses is the world as it really is. We also believe we are billions of separate beings - which fosters a sense of tribalism and a distrust of "the other". But, professor Donald Hoffman says science shows that the chance that we see reality as it actually is - is zero. It may look like there are cars, houses and separate people - but that is how we experience reality when it is filtered through the human mind. Space & time are not fundamentally real - they are like a VR headset we have put on. Furthermore, he says cutting edge mathematics and science show that there are not billions of separate beings, but there is one infinite Being - and we are all avatars of that.
Professor Donald Hoffman is a renowned cognitive scientist whose work is truly groundbreaking. This conversation will have you question your view of the world, yourself and what's really important in life. The implications are profound. Not least because if we are all avatars of one Being - that means that if I hurt you, I am simultaneously hurting myself.
The key lessons from this episode will be posted on my YouTube page which you can find here: https://tinyurl.com/YouTubeLifeLessons

We can’t all be better than average – there just isn’t room at the top for everyone.
Striving for the top is a nice idea, but the other side of it is: if we become anything other than ordinary, we feel that we have failed somehow.
This goal-orientated outlook is widespread. But, is it really important to be remembered as a high achiever or 'Champion'? Isn't it more important to be a kind, caring individual who treats his friends and family well? That's what broadcaster and author Konnie Huq is here to suggest.

The Meandering Route To Success: David Epstein
The general consensus in society tends to be that to have success in any field requires early specialisation and many hours of deliberate practice - aka the 'Tiger Woods model'. And if you dabble or delay, you'll never catch up with those who got a head start. In this episode, David Epstein dispels this widely-held myth. He explains that the best way to succeed is by sampling widely, gaining a breadth of experiences, taking detours and juggling many interests, which could be coined the 'Roger Federer model'.

In Praise Of Average: Konnie Huq
"We are always striving for the top - but sometimes it's better to embrace being in the middle".
Konnie Huq is a TV & Radio presenter, a screenwriter and a children's author, who holds the record for being the longest-serving presenter of the iconic British children's TV programme Blue Peter. The essence of what Konnie speaks about in this episode is that our continual striving for more, bigger & better is making us less happy. As she says, if you can be happy with what you already have - you are winning! Konnie recognises her good fortune, which was helped by her time working on Blue Peter, and she has adopted something of an anti-mindless consumerist mundset - that has somehwat rubbed off on her husband, the creator of Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker.

Develop Your 'Super Strengths': Nick Matthew
How to go from all-rounder to outstanding. Nick Matthew is the greatest squash player in English history - a genuine legend of the game who reached world number one and won both the World Championships and the British open (the Wimbledon of squash) on three occasions. To reach the top, Nick had to pivot and adapt on several occasions, eventually working out his 'super strengths' to be able to take him to number one. Nick had an incredible desire to improve, but underneath his drive and determination is a deep love for the sport, and the sense of transcendence it brought him. Since retiring, Nick has started developing the next generation of young talent - and has continued to evolve as a coach and person. He is full of valuable lessons anyone can learn from.

How To Get What You Really Want: Ben Hunt-Davis
How can you get what you really want? You may think it is the job, the relationship, the house or the substance you want - but fundamentally we all desire to be happy and feel fulfilled, and to avoid suffering. How we believe we will get those will differ for all of us. How then do we give ourselves the best chance of getting what we want, in any area of life?
This week's conversation is with Ben Hunt-Davis of 'Will It Make The Boat Go Faster' fame. Ben won Olympic gold at his third Games, having finished way down the field in both of his first two attempts. With two years left of his decade long pursuit of Olympic gold, Ben finally changed tac. By focusing specifically on the one thing that gave him the best chance of getting what he wanted, he was able to fulfil his dreams. He has since taken his Life Lessons into every other area of his life.

BITESIZE: Handling Pressure - Sir Clive Woodward
Thinking Correctly under Pressure. Who doesn’t want – or need – to be able to do that?
TCUP – as Clive calls it – was fundamental in helping England win the rugby World Cup twenty years ago. Clive shares a couple of recent examples of how this works from sport and his own life. Really it’s about envisaging how things might go – so that when challenges arise, as they always do in life, you have considered how you might respond and are able to do so effectively

How to Release Tension & Stress: David Berceli
Want to know how to get your nervous system back into a state of relaxation and calm? TRE is a powerful, simple and effective way to release stress and tension from your body. My guest is the its creator, David Berceli.
Both humans and animals alike are born with a biological stress response known as “fight or flight”. We are also born with a natural trembling capacity that enables us to discharge accumulated stress, something we have in common with other mammals. Unfortunately for human beings, once the ego develops, it typically overrules this natural mechanism to stop us being perceived as 'weak', meaning stress and tension is free to accumulate in our nervous system, which can lead to a host of physical and mental problems.
TRE is a simple set of exercises that activates the body’s natural shaking or trembling mechanism – which helps to release deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma.
YouTube video of my powerful TRE session guided by David is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyHYCjdPhoU
PLEASE LIKE & SUBSCRIBE!
I am a huge fan of TRE and do these exercises regularly, and it has definitely helped me in a big way. I am really keen to spread the word – as I truly believe these exercises could have a profound effect on people’s health and wellbeing.
In this episode:
- How David’s work in war zones led to the creation of TRE
- The relationship between the fetal position & the fight or flight stress response
- Why & how human beings lose the natural capacity to tremble
- The importance of letting go
- Why the most resilient animals are those that know when to lose control of their bodies
- How the ego gets in the way of our inbuilt release mechanisms
- The importance of the PSOAS muscle and releasing tension from it
- How the TRE exercises work and how often people can do it

BITESIZE: Don't Judge People - John McAvoy
It is easy to take credit for our successes, and look down on others for their 'failings', without acknowledging the huge number of interrelated factors and events that first had to happen for them to come into being. We don’t choose our parents, our genetics, our personality traits, our talents, the time and place where we are born, or the experiences that shape us. If we really consider all of these things – and truly recognise how little say we have in the formative elements of our life – it is inevitably humbling.
And on the flipside, it can allow us to have more understanding and empathy for people who have lost their way. The famous psychologist Albert Ellis spoke about judging behaviour as good or bad – but not judging people, and that really points to this.
One person who powerfully illustrates this point is the Nike sponsored endurance athlete John McAvoy – who previously was sentenced to life in prison in his early twenties for armed robbery, before turning his life around.

Trauma: Dr Bessel Van Der Kolk
"Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going on inside us"

Psychological Diversity: Matthew Syed
This episode is all about the importance of diverse thinking. Matthew Syed explains how the FA embraced diversity off the pitch, which contributed to success on it, and how the tragedy of 9/11 could have been avoided had the CIA been less collectively blind because of a lack of cultural diversity. It's to do with 'homophily', which is our tendency to bond with people who are socially similar. And if you've ever thought that meetings at work are 'catastrophically inefficient', this episode will prove you correct.

Recognising You Are Already Enough: Grayson Hart
Do you feel a subtle sense of lack? If you do, you are not alone. It’s part of the human condition – or at least it is when we are identified with the mind. But the truth is, there is a space in all of us that is always fulfilled and content. Our task is to recognise that – and rest there.
Grayson Hart is the CEO and founder of Puresport, and is a former Scotland international rugby player, having grown up in rugby royalty in New Zealand where he was part of the junior All Black team that won the World Cup.
In this episode we discuss our shared philosophical outlook, the point of which is to recognise that wellbeing and happiness isn’t something out there, in objects and the world. It is our true nature.
Recognising that you are already enough and fulfilled is one of the greatest gifts anyone can find – and that is something Grayson discovered, having hit rock bottom after his father died after suffering from drug addiction, and after his rugby career left him feeling unexpectedly empty.
The key message that Grayson shares in this episode is such an important one – and I hope you enjoy our conversation.
In this episode:
Coming from rugby royalty in NZ – his uncle coached the All Blacks
Growing up around drug addiction with his Dad
The consequences of that & seeking attention at school
Finding belonging in rugby & a way to connect with his Dad
Being selected for the junior All Blacks
Reaching his goal and feeling unfulfilled & then his father dying
Starting looking inwards
Recognising we are all already enough
Exploring our true nature
Becoming an entrepreneur - challenges & lessons
The importance of recognising 'we are the sky and not the weather'

BITESIZE: Ryan Holiday - Stoicism
'There is nothing either good or bad – only thinking makes it so'.
Stoicism is described as the most practical of all philosophies – according to Ryan Holiday, best-selling author of classics including the Obstacle is the Way. I spoke to Ryan Holiday during the COVID pandemic – with a view to helping people not get overwhelmed by what was a very challenging time.
Clearly things have now moved on, but the beauty of the life lessons Ryan shared can be applied to any difficult scenario. Events are challenging now – albeit for different reasons than a few years ago, but this philosophy and way of looking at events and understanding how our thoughts and judgements about what is happening colours our experience and feelings, remains hugely beneficial

The Power of Mentors: Seb Coe
This week I am joined by one of the greatest British athletes of all time, Seb Coe – a double Olympic gold medalist during the golden era of middle-distance running, the President of World Athletics, the driving force behind London’s winning Olympic bid in 2012, and much more besides.
There’s so much we cover in this episode, from using early setbacks as fuel later in life, through to his epic Olympic triumph at Moscow in 1980, as well as the key role he played in helping London win the 2012 Olympic bid.
The theme of this episode is about the power of good mentors. Find out who his key mentors have been, the role they’ve played in his life, but also the questions to ask yourself to help get over disappointment and adversity, and the importance of trusting your intuition to come up with the goods at the key moment, as it did for him ahead of London 2012. We also talk about the transformative power of sport and the amazing charity Greenhouse Sports, for whom Seb is an ambassador. The charity uses sport to help disadvantaged young people and communities and the work they do is truly transformative.
In this episode:
How early adversity often breeds later success
Seb Coe's key mentors
The power of sport and inspiring people to live healthy lives & the concerning trend of young people being less active
His competition with Steve Ovett and Moscow 1980 – winning silver and gold
The power of humour and Daley Thompson
The questions to ask yourself to regroup after disappointment
Writing the key speech for London 2012’s Olympic bid & listening to your intuition
Sport being the biggest social worker & its power to affect change

At a time when all the knowledge in the world is little more than a mouse click away – the importance of learning how to learn is key.
And one person who was a pass master was the late Anders Ericsson – who was best known for his work on deliberate practice and whose research led to the widely misconstrued '10,000 hours' rule popularised by Malcolm Gladwell.
So this was Anders – talking all about how to learn, and develop a love of learning – drawing on his own formative experiences.

Finally, a huge thanks to my sponsors, Puresport. Their range of CBD and Nootropics supplements have had a significant impact on how I sleep, manage stress, and focus throughout the day. I can’t recommend them enough.
CBD has been shown to have benefits for anxiety, inflammation, aches and pains - and it may even be good for long term brain and heart health. And anything that helps keep me well in the long-term rather than having to fix lots of niggles once they arrive gets the thumbs up from me. Combined with their supplements range, Puresport are paving the way in the natural wellness market.
Frankly, if nothing else, you have to try their Unwind Oil before bed. You’ll sleep like a baby. The good news is that you can get 20% off with code Life20 at checkout. Head to puresportcbd.com and enjoy!

REWIND: Why you can't focus: Johann Hari
So many of us are struggling to focus and pay attention to what we need to. It can feel like a moral failing – as if there is something wrong with us individually. But Johann Hari argues that is not the case. The problem runs much deeper.
Teenagers now focus on one task for only 65 seconds he says, while office workers aren’t much better – managing only three minutes.
It won’t surprise you to hear that digital has a significant role to play – after all, how many people don’t have a somewhat dysfunctional relationship with their phones?
But there are other factors too – including 'surveillance capitalism' and even the way childhood freedom has been curtailed.
Johann’s book is called Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention.

BITESIZE: Sir Clive Woodward - Mastering the Basics
Often people think to achieve what they want in life is about finding a magic bullet, but as World Cup winning coach Sir Clive Woodward explains – frequently it’s just about understanding the basics. Those things you absolutely have to get right to succeed in a particular project or goal.
This might sound obvious – but actually it turns out it is incredibly common for people within teams, businesses and organisations not to know the basics of what they are trying to do – and that even applies at the top level of elite sport.
