323: Living Off-The-Grid In Latin America – Patrick Hiebert
Living off-grid doesn’t have to mean “barely getting by” and going without our favourite life amenities. In fact, today’s guest, Patrick Hiiebert, is building luxury, freedom-oriented, off-grid communities right here in Latin America.
Like myself, Patrick was born in Canada and now lives in Latin America. He is the CEO and one of the founders of EcoVillages and VidaVerde AgroForestry. Through his work at EcoVillages, he has founded Veritas Village Panama, a luxury off-grid community outside of Panama City.
TODAY’S CONVERSATION WITH PATRICK HIEBERT:
Listen in to find out how Patrick and his family ended up falling in love with and living full-time in Latin America.
Learn why Patrick intends to win back the term “eco” from climate commies who have distorted it to be conflated with socialism.
Can you really live off-the-grid while having all the amenities of luxury, first-world living? Patrick reveals the pieces that make the concept work.
Discover what the future holds for the Veritas concept and what other countries are on the radar for potential Veritas-inspired communities.
Tune in to hear Patrick and I brainstorm some wild ideas together for expanding this off-grid luxury concept.
Find out how living in an off-grid community not only improves your way of life but drastically decreases your cost of living.
Hear Patrick explain why the demand for this type of self-sufficient community has skyrocketed since COVID restrictions of a few years ago.
By the end of this conversation, you’ll fully understand why Latin America provides an ideal, welcoming and safe environment for these off-grid communities.

314: Panama: Why I Chose This Small Latino Country As My Home Base
“Why Panama?” I get this question every day, especially in a world where the word “expat” is still often associated with countries like the UAE, Portugal, Singapore, and others. It was not an easy decision, and it was not one my wife and I took lightly. When we decided to leave the UAE several years ago, we spent countless hours debating the pros and cons of several countries before deciding on Panama.
Since I get this question so often, I decided that this week, I would share with you a presentation I gave at last year’s Expat Money Summit, in which I lay out all the reasons we settled on Panama as our home base. This will also help give you an idea of the flavour of some of the presentations you’ll hear at this year’s Summit. And don’t worry—I never do the same presentation twice, so you’ll get all new content at this year’s Expat Money Summit.
TODAY’S EPISODE ON WHY I CHOSE PANAMA AS MY HOME BASE:
Tune in to hear me first lay out the good, the bad and the ugly of the UAE and why we decided to search for another home country.
Listen in to hear about the most pleasant experience one could ever have losing a wallet when I lost mine in a taxi in the UAE.
Hear me compare the stark differences in both the cost and quality of food between the UAE and Panama.
Learn about Panama's very favourable tax situation, a big factor for many expats looking to protect their hard-earned wealth.
It’s not all about numbers. Discover all you need to know about the lifestyle in Panama and why it suits our family so well.
What about the visa options? Learn about Panama’s many residency options and which pathway we chose (an option that is, unfortunately, no longer available.)
Is Panama safe? Find out what it’s like living here, how the country respects the rule of law, and whether you can legally own a gun here.
Lastly, you’ll hear what it’s been like living in Panama City and why this Latin American metropolis has become such a hub for expats.

313: El Salvador: Is This Emerging Latin American Country Worth The Hype?
It seems like every day, a Private Client or subscriber to our newsletter asks me about El Salvador. I can’t say I necessarily blame them; with everything Bukele has done, from turning around the violent crime situation to legalizing Bitcoin, there are plenty of reasons for expats to take an interest in the direction of this emerging Latin American country.
But having not been to El Salvador myself for twenty-some-odd years, I decided to take a long weekend trip down there to meet up with a few business contacts and check out how things had progressed since I had last hitchhiked through it as a much younger man. This episode is my full report from the trip and my thoughts on El Salvador’s potential for expats.
TODAY’S EL SALVADOR TRIP REPORT:
Hear about the good (I’m still thinking about the pupusas!), the bat (that’s not a typo…), and the ugly of my hotel and Airbnb stays in El Salvador.
Listen in for the inside scoop on some of the quite frankly terrible things I learned about El Salvador for expats, which mostly centers around the unfavourable tax situation.
What about the visas? Tune in as I discuss all the available options for expats to live legally in El Salvador.
Is Bukele really going to be giving out 5,000 “free passports,” as he proclaimed in a tweet? Hear what my El Salvadoran insiders had to say.
How does the proposed $1 million “Freedom Visa” stack up to other regional citizenship-by-investment programs? Hear my thoughts on this pricey offer.
What about company structures? I dissect whether El Salvador could be a viable option for forming offshore companies.
How does El Salvador’s banking system stack up to its neighbours? Discover what I learned about finance in the nation.
Lastly, hear my final analysis of whether El Salvador could serve as a potential Plan-B destination for expats.

294: Mikkel Unfiltered: A Spicy Take On The Expat World
Ever wished I would loosen up a little and tell you what I really think? I say this somewhat in jest, of course - long-time listeners know I am not really one to hold back and always strive to deliver my perspective in the most straightforward way possible.
But I think you’ll find in this episode that I let loose a bit more than normal as I joined my friend Adam Carswell on his live show “Ancap Radio” on Twitter (or X, which I’ll never get used to saying…). I’m not sure what was in the air—perhaps it was the show's “live radio” format of the show—but I was in a certain kind of mood and really just let loose.
I had such a fun time chatting with Adam and going on a number of rants, so I just had to share this one with you today. There’s even a special appearance from our mutual friend Doug Casey, who, of course, Expat Money Show listeners are more than familiar with.

I can honestly say this was one of the more enjoyable appearances on another show that I’ve had in quite some time. Plus, you can never go wrong talking to Doug Casey. I highly encourage you to check out his live show when you get a chance.

293: What’s It Like To Work With Expat Money?
What’s it really like to work with me? That’s exactly what my colleague Marc Clair asked several of my clients and partners last month during my 41st birthday bash in Panama.
This came at the tail end of our Panama Expat Exploration & Investment Tour, where I spent the week helping clients craft their own Plan B, whether it be residencies, citizenships, or simply investing internationally and protecting their wealth.
People often ask why I have spent so much time and resources building this company when I could easily retire on the beach somewhere and spend the rest of my days staring off into the sunset. Aside from the fact that I am simply not built that way and would completely lose my mind, you’ll see from these testimonials today what it’s really all about.
More people than ever before are awakening to the threats to their freedom and wealth, and I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to help others dramatically improve their situation. In today’s episode, you will get a glimpse into what it’s really like to work with me, craft your own Plan B, and protect yourself and your family from the machinations of corrupt politicians around the globe.

Today, I’m going to provide an update on everything that’s been going on over the past few weeks. I'll see you all next Wednesday!Mentioned in this episode:Veritas Panama - Offgrid CommunityAfter 17 months of bureaucracy, my partners and I successfully got our permits for Veritas Panama! This is the fully off-grid community we are building in the highlands of Panama.
We have already started building the roads, subdividing the lots, installing the septic and water, and even installing solar panels, so everything is independent of the power grid!
The site we chose is unbelievable; we are up at a flat plateau about a thousand feet up a mountain with incredible unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean. To go to the beach, it is just 15 minutes down to the water.
We have mature fruit trees on site, including these gorgeous 200-year-old mango trees and many other things, such as avocado trees, papayas, and delicious tropical fruits.
You can find out more information and contact us at VeritasPanama.com
But please be aware that there are only 100 home sites, and without even talking about this to the general public, a lot of the lots are already sold…
So if you dream of living in a completely off-grid community, enjoying the beautiful weather, close to the beach, being food, water, and energy independent, and want to have like-minded and cool neighbours, people who respect personal,...
