Ep. 11: Lauren Griewski, CRO, Permission.IOHello Everyone -The school year is in full swing, football is back and baseball is about to enter its fall classic. Soon the weather will cool and the leaves will fall, but until September 22nd it’s still summer as far as I’m concerned. For me, as a kid, it was always the Jewish new year — Rosh Hashanah — to signify the changing of the seasons. Dipping apples in honey to wish everyone a sweet and happy new year was a nice way to mark the start of one of my favorite seasons, fall. Now, in addition, it’s the start of school, friends’ birthday parties, and soon, a visit to an apple or pumpkin orchard. How do you ‘celebrate’ fall? On the topic at hand, I had a great conversation with Lauren Griewski, the CRO at Permission.io on her leadership style, purpose, culture, and aligning her core, fundamental values with her work. I want to thank my friend Seth Ulinski for making the connection to Lauren. If you want to keep tabs on the ad/mar-tech space + emerging media (like web3), give Seth a follow on Twitter. Lauren and her team are at the forefront of Web3 and providing consumers more control over their data in a decentralized world in contrast to how the large platforms — FAANG (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google) ingest and hold agency over how our data is both collected and used. As the name suggests, Permission is putting the consumer first — meaning in order for a brand to market to that consumer the consumer must opt-in and are then rewarded for their engagement. We also dove in and spoke about Lauren’s leadership style, which is predicated on compassion and understanding. While Lauren and her team have performance goals to hit, it’s important for her to be invested in the human aspect of leading so she’s able to sincerely know and build rapport with the individual contributors she leads. It’s easy to default to the transactional side of work — you do this, so we can reap that — yet employees had been moving towards purposeful work, being able to compartmentalize personal and professional life while making sure personal values align well with corporate values even before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic; the pandemic just accelerated them. As the trite saying goes, ‘it’s not only about the paycheck.’ One key tenet of Lauren’s leadership style is personal responsibility — having agency over our time, our commitments, and our emotions. It’s a tone she has struck with the people she leads and it goes both ways especially around giving and receiving feedback. The latter is reflective of Lauren being self-aware, grounded, and having the humility to hear and absorb feedback. One word of caution, with me editorializing, feedback is best received when there’s mutual trust and respect. Are we living and working through the ‘great evaluation?’ Tweet your thoughts to me and Lauren.
