Shelley’s angry, violent poem was written in direct response to the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester in 1819, in which a demonstration in favour of parliamentary reform was attacked by local yeomanry, leaving 18 people dead and hundreds injured. The ‘masque’ it describes begins with a procession of abstract figures – Murder, Fraud, Hypocrisy – embodied in members of the government, before eventually unfolding into a vision of England freed from the tyranny and anarchy of its institutions. Holly recently moved closer to the epicenter of celebrity, while Devin has always been terrified to visit - intimidated by all of the people who figured out how to get famous. They find that across genres Hollywood has always held a wide appeal, and in almost no other theme is the difference between romance and murder so thin.  Topics Discussed: The Heart (4:42): Devin discussed The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, a novel that traces through the long life of famous actress Evelyn Hugo as she shares a tell-all with up-and-coming reporter Monique Grant. Please be aware that below is a *spoiler* but also a key plot point that Devin couldn’t avoid touching on: Through the interview process and early-ish in the book, Evelyn reveals to Monique that the great love of her life was actually a woman - fellow actress Celia St. James - and that she is bisexual. Devin finally understood why *everyone* was trying to push her to read a book about a celebrity with 7 male husbands.  Reid explores the challenges of Hollywood and conformity in society writ large through the life of Evelyn Hugo - she is a woman in a patriarchal society, she is a cuban woman passing as a white woman, and she’s bisexual in an era when deviance from the norm and wlw was demonized.  Evelyn’s grit, drive to succeed, and nimbleness to use societal expectations to craft the life she wanted is admirable and exciting to read. There is a final twist at the end of the book, though, that Devin felt was unnecessary and pushed the book from engaging to dramatic.  The Dagger (20:13): Holly discussed The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy, a crime fiction novel from 1987 that is loosely based on the infamous (real) unsolved case of Elizabeth Short, who was found brutally murdered and dismembered in Los Angeles in 1947. The fictionalized version follows two LAPD detectives - Bucky and Lee - who become obsessed with the victim and her case. Holly’s key takeaways were: Ellroy is a very gritty noir writer, and the novel not only exposes the corruption, violence, and depravity that lies just beneath the glittered surface of Hollywood, but toxic masculinity and themes of violence as well.  Bucky and Lee are friends but also rivals in love with the same woman - Kay Lake (Lee’s live-in girlfriend). There is a black-and-white film version of the novel and Kay is played by Scarlett Johansen. Their rivalry and their methods of beating suspects, use of violence to solve cases, etc. allow Ellroy and the reader to explore the moral question of if the ends justify the means. The victim, Elizabeth, had many aliases and was obsessed with becoming a Hollywood star; women in this novel are portrayed largely as victims or objects of desire for the male characters. On December 6, Aung San Suu Kyi was handed down a prison sentence by a court loyal to Myanmar's military junta. Until February of this year, Suu Kyi was the de-facto civilian leader of Myanmar. Her party, the National League for Democracy, had just won re-election in a landslide victory -- the results of which were rejected by the military, which mounted a coup.  The military junta were not swayed massive protests throughout the country and began violently suppressing dissent. Now, violence seems to be escalating, prompting the UN's top human rights official to warn that Myanmar may be sliding into a civil war. My guest today, Matthew Smith, is the co-founder and CEO of Fortify Rights, a human rights organization long active in Myanmar. We kick off discussing the circumstances of Aung San Suu Kyi's criminal conviction before having a broader conversation about the escalating crisis in Myanmar.  Our conversation was recorded live on Twitter using the new Twitter Spaces platform. And let's not forget about diving deep....and we mean DEEP...into Fantastic Four lore! What? You do not know about the Creature from the Lost Lagoon, Mowfus from the Planet Quon? How can you call yourself a Marvel fan if you do not know who this character is? Can I fill this paragraph with any more question marks? We are talking high-jinx on the high seas, with a high amount of high-larity. This story is .....something. It deals with things that occur to characters in a manner that unfolds in a story. This all occurred. Boats....this story had many boats. Much of the action was on or near water so they needed boats to be on the water while the action occurred. Some of those boats broke. Others were damaged. But there definitely were boats. And....other stuff.....ok....look. Let us level with you all. This was not very good. This is a story that was put out in an anthology book of stories from dead books. There are some definite rewrites that happened, and it just falls apart. If you want our advise, just head out and find a nice bar and have a drink. Health systems in Brazil are collapsing. Hospitals are running out of beds and oxygen as COVID cases in that country are soaring. Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has long downplayed the severity of COVID and now deaths are spiking in South America's largest country. In mid march, Cyclone Idai struck southern Africa, ravaging parts of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Of these countries, Mozambique was hardest hit. The storm struck the port city Beira and surrounding areas, creating a massive inland flood plane. At the time, the World Meteorological Organization called it one of the worst weather related disasters to ever strike the southern hemisphere.   One month on, I wanted to get a sense of the how the recovery efforts were progressing, so I called up Dorothy Sang of Oxfam, who is on the line with me today from the city of Beira in Mozambique. Dorothy Sang is Oxfam's humanitarian advocacy manager and in this conversation she describes the scale of the damage wrought by Cyclone Idai and how international relief agencies like Oxfam are responding to this crisis. He speaks candidly about the psychological toll of this line of work and managing the PTSD which he confronts to this day.  Stanton is a descendent of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and as you'll learn from this conversation, the human rights gene runs strong in this family. His father was a liberal preacher and civil rights activist, and Greg tells me the most dangerous place he's ever worked, to this day, was registering black voters in Mississippi in the 1960s.    Greg is the founder of the NGO Genocide watch. His career as a genocide scholar and activist began in the 1980s as an humanitarian worker in Cambodia, and he recounts collecting evidence of war crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge. Greg served for many years in the State Department as well, including in Rwanda to help establish the war crimes tribunal following the 1994 genocide.
