Stephen Hodges
Interview with drummer composer Stephen Hodges on his new album with mssv
mssv is releasing their second studio album Human Reaction in their typical style: with a 58-show tour in the U.S. and parts of Canada (dates below). The band, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch) on drums and avant-punk icon mike watton bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” Human Reaction is being released by BIG EGO Records as a digital download, 12” LP vinyl, and via streaming platformson September 1. Recorded mostly on May Day immediately following that last tour, Human Reaction traverses a deeply broad sonic landscape, as expected from this nearly unclassifiable group, though with even deeper twists and turns. With inventively churning drum textures from Hodges (an instantly identifiable sound honed in his days with Tom Waits and David Lynch) and the full-steam-ahead all-in attitude from watt, (as he’s displayed throughout his storied career with MINUTEMEN, fIREHOSE, and Iggy & The Stooges), there is still the impression of “pressure, combustion, power, and hissing clouds of sonic poetry,” as Premier Guitar said. Also evident is the more fearless exploring that comes from a band that has spent a lot of time together crafting their vision, as well as making room for guests like J Mascis, Petra Haden and Nels Cline on some of their previous releases. Stephen Hodges is an American percussionist and composer. He is best known for his work with Mavis Staples Tom Waits,Mike Watt, T Bone Burnett Rick Holmstrom, and film director David Lynch

Veronica Swift
Veronica Swift’s new eponymously titled album, her third for Mack Avenue Records, is a masterful coming-out story. On her previous albums, Confessions (2019) and This Bitter Earth (2021), she ascended to the upper echelon of early 21st century jazz singers because of her virtuosic brilliance, interpretive ingenuity, bracing songwriting, and keen arrangements. Simply put, Swift is not only one of the most dazzling singers to emerge in her generation, she’s one of the most versatile.
While her first two albums solidified her position in modern jazz, Veronica Swift shows that she’s more than a jazz singer, exploring French and Italian opera, European classical music, bossa nova, blues, industrial rock, funk, and vaudeville. She pulls the feat off without the results sounding callow or pastiche. Swift’s expansive artistic voice remains firmly intact regardless of genre.
Swift describes this personal artistic statement on her new album as “transgenre.” “I grew up immersed in the culture of jazz music, blessed to have had some of the greats as mentors, and I felt a deep familial duty to uphold that” she says, reflecting on her parents - jazz singer and educator, Stephanie Nakasian, and bebop pianist, Hod O’Brien.
“But as rooted in jazz as I’ve been, there’s a uniquely visceral power in rock and soul music that’s always fueled my creative passion, and rather than mask or confine that part of my identity, the people I admire most show themselves unabashedly and that’s the kind of tradition I want to be a part of.

GUJI 咕叽,
Interview with Klaire and Alex of GUJI 咕叽,
EP of GUJI 咕叽, a quirky synth-driven new wave quartet comprised of Chinese nationals Klaire (synths), Alex (bass), Stacy (drum machine) and American guitarist and singer for Shanghai punk band Round Eye Chachy with an interview. The EP will be released in late Summer August 25 by Floridian label Godless America. The EP was produced by frequent Modern Sky Recordings producer Li Wei Yu To say 2020-2022 were bleak years to live in Shanghai would be the understatement of the century. With the implementation of the “0-Covid policy” and the “Shanghai Lockdown”, a fucked attempt by the CCP to curb the transmission rate of the Covid-19 pandemic, the city became still. Businesses shuttered, schools closed, planes landed, shows cancelled and borders closed. For three years, China seemed without pulse as very little traffic ran between it and the outside world. Guizhou native Jiang Zi Xiu (Klaire) and Craig Englund (Chachy) were stuck in their home for months as a makeshift wall of plywood and bamboo rods was raised at the entrance and exits of the alleyway outside their door. Guards in hazmat suits were placed to conduct daily PCR tests and make sure no one came in or out. It was under these conditions that the couple decided to fill their time and their walls with the double lead harmonies, jangling B-52 styled guitar and cheesy drum machine pulse of the sardonic bubblegum-arpeggiated synthpop of GUJI咕叽. Heavily influenced by the aesthetic of 80s DEVO, B-52s, and My Little Pony the duo channels their frustrations and observations into vivid DIY videos channeling the work of Chuck Statler and blast humorously sardonic synthpop jams lined with pastel colored neon lights. With their first self-titled EP, they turn their anger into childish jeering fun in an overwhelmingly hostile political landscape and with songs like “I like to Hang Out in China” and “My Mao Suit” the band waves at the outside world with hammer and sickle and dares those who listen to not strip and dance in the hot pink fire.

Vinnie Dombroski of Sponge
Sponge is an American alternative rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1992
by vocalist Vinnie Dombroski, guitarists Mike Cross and Joey Mazzola,
bassist Tim Cross, and drummer Jimmy Paluzzi.
After shopping demos as the newly formed quintet, the song “Neenah Menasha”
caught the ears of A&R person Pablo Mathiason and the band signed with The Work Group
(a Columbia Records subsidiary) in the fall of 1993. The following year,
Sponge released the now iconic, Platinum-selling debut album, “Rotting Piñata,”
to global, critical and commercial success.
After two top 10 hit singles, several tours and live television performances, including
the John Stewart Show and Late Night with David Letterman, Sponge followed up their
debut with 1996's "Wax Ecstatic.” This sophomore effort garnered a "Song Of The Year" nod
from Rolling Stone Magazine for title track “Wax Ecstatic.” The album also yielded two
additional top 10 hit singles and featured a guest vocal appearance from Richard Butler
of the Psychedelic Furs on the song “I Am Anastasia.”
Since then, Sponge continues to release new music and keeps a near-constant tour
schedule to the pleasure of their legion of loyal followers.

Eddie Shaw of The Monks
Interview with Eddie Shaw bassist of The Monks and Author of the book Black Monk Time.
The Monks, referred to by the name monks on record sleeves, were an American rock band formed in Gelnhausen, West Germany in 1964. Assembled by five American GIs stationed in the country, the group grew tired of the traditional format of rock, which motivated them to forge a highly experimental style characterized by an emphasis on hypnotic rhythms that minimized the role of melody, augmented by the use of sound manipulation techniques. The band's unconventional blend of shrill vocals confrontational lyrics, feedback, and guitarist David Day's six-string banjo baffled audiences, but music historians have since identified the Monks as a pioneering force in avant-garde musicThe band's lyrics often voiced objection to the Vietnam War and the dehumanized state of society, while prefiguring the harsh and blunt commentary of the punk rock movement of the 1970s and 1980s. The band's appearance was considered as shocking as its music, as they attempted to mimic the look of Catholic monks by wearing black habits with cinctures symbolically tied around their necks, and hair worn in partially shaved tonsures.

Hackedepicciotto (Alexander Hacke and Danielle de Picciotto) Part 2
Berlin-based avant-garde duo hackedepicciotto have returned with Keepsakes, their fifth full length studio album. Keepsakes is the duo’s second album released on Mute, and was recorded at one of Europe’s oldest recording spaces, the Neapolitan studio Auditorium Novecento. Inspired by the space, which was home to Caruso and Morricone, the new compositions feature tubular bells and a grand piano within their signature sound of a symphonic drone.
hackedepicciotto are Alexander Hacke and Danielle de Picciotto. Both are legends of their own making: Danielle de Picciotto moved to Berlin in 1987, to become the lead singer of the band „Space Cowboys“, the co-initiator of the Love Parade, a collaborator of the Ocean Club with Gudrun Gut, and Alexander’s partner in crime. Alexander Hacke is founding member and bass player of Einstürzende Neubauten. The artist couple, romantically married in 2006, has creatively interacted with countless international projects for almost 2 decades now besides regularly releasing their own compositions.

Tony Cuchetti
Interview with Tony Cuchetti
Tony Cuchetti came by his skills as a singer, writer, and performer the hard way – from extensive road work from an early age. “My parents decided to start a family act in the late 60s and started playing malls, fairs, conventions, and even Vegas in the era of the Jackson 5 and The Osmonds. We had the bus and the costumes. When I came along, I was born into it and toured for the last ten years of the group. That’s pretty much how I grew up, on the road for ten or eleven months out of the year. I remember it fondly. It was a pretty tight-knit production, and we were self- contained as a family.” Cuchetti continues to be a tireless gigging musician playing north of 200+ shows a year both solo and with his full band. The songs from Freer Street touch base with core values and core questions to reach out to audiences, but in the end, Tony Cuchetti builds songs in the hopes of finding those of like mind. He concludes, “What sounds good and what makes me feel good, that’s how I operate.”

Brian Krumm of The Great Crusades
Vocalist/guitarist Brian Krumm formed The Great Crusades more than 20 years ago, following
his tenure with The Suede Chain. The Great Crusades’ debut, The First Spilled Drink of the
Evening was released in 1997, earning the praise of Rolling Stone’s David Fricke: “The Great
Crusades look at life through a shot-glass lens, mixing anger, muscle and minor-key remorse like
a roughneck Tindersticks with the bonus of a singer who’s got the tubercular pipes of Tom Waits
and Axl Rose’s love child.”
In 2000, Damaged Goods was released by Glitterhouse Records in Europe and Checkered Past
Records in North America. Next, the Never Go Home tour was presented by Musikexpress
Magazine and the band appeared on the legendary TV program Rockpalast. (The band also
played Rockpalast in 2015—one of only a few bands to play the show twice.)
Welcome to the Hiawatha Inn, Four Thirty, Keep Them Entertained, Fiction to Shame, Thieves
of Chicago and Until the Night Turned to Day followed, each providing a new focus for
Krumm’s ever-evolving songwriting and storytelling. Two songs from Keep Them Entertained
appeared in the season 4 finale of the HBO vampire series True Blood.
In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic put music venues on hold worldwide, Krumm focused on
solo work and began writing the materials that’d wind up on Just Fade Away. With the album
set for release, Brian Krumm and His Barfly Friends plans to tour in 2023.

Joe Cannon of Resurrectionists
Interview with Joe Cannon of Resurrectionists
Resurrectionists were originally formed by lyricist, guitarist, and banjo picker Joe Cannon and bassist Jeff Brueggeman from the locally revered trio WORK with drummer Josh Barto and pedal steel player Gavin Hardy. On the group’s 2019 debut album What Comes In -- a collection of everyman trouble tales delivered with dark wit and piquant Midwestern tang -- Gavin’s mournful, swelling steel work helped steer songs into Gothic-country territory. On Now That We Are All Ghosts, Hardy has been replaced by multi-instrumentalist Gian Pogliano. Gian’s penchant for more adventurous, wider-ranging sonic discourse inspires Resurrectionists to branch out into unexpected stylistic experimentation. The material here is informed equally by the meticulous melodic abstractions of pre-punk icons on Television as the Old Weird American sounds of Dock Boggs and Bascom Lamar Lunsford. Kenny Werner
Kenny Werner has been a world-class pianist and composer for over forty years. His prolific output of compositions, recordings, and publications continues to impact audiences worldwide. In 1996 he wrote his landmark book Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician Within.
Werner has since created videos, lectured worldwide, and authored many articles on how musicians, artists, or even business people can allow their “master creator” within to lift their performance to its highest level, showing us how to be spontaneous, fearless, joyful and disciplined in our work and our life.
Kenny was awarded the 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship Award for his seminal work, No Beginning No End. No Beginning No End is a musical journey exploring tragedy and loss, death and transition, and the path from one lifetime to the next. Utilizing over 70 musicians, Kenny’s third album for Half Note Records is an expansive composition featuring Joe Lovano, Judy Silvano, Wind Ensemble, Choir and String Quartet.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on November 19, 1951 and then growing up in Oceanside, Long Island, Kenny began playing and performing at a young age, first recording on television at the age of 11. Although he studied classical piano as a child, he enjoyed playing anything he heard on the radio. In high school and his first years of college, he attended the Manhattan School of Music as a classical piano major.
Becoming the Instrument
Kenny Werner has been a world-class pianist, composer, and teacher for 40 years. In 2010, Werner received the Guggenheim Fellowship Award for his seminal work, “No Beginning No End,” a musical journey exploring tragedy and loss, death and transition, and the path from one lifetime to the next.
Now he has coalesced his knowledge into Becoming the Instrument, the highly anticipated sequel to his landmark book, Effortless Mastery, which revolutionized how musicians approach their craft.
In Becoming the Instrument, Werner shares how anyone can experience mastery, drawn from his experience as a musical master. It’s the guide for seeing the highest in oneself and others.
This new book is for anyone who wants to understand the fine art of mastery and how it applies to their own life. He brilliantly yet simply expresses how to lift one’s perceptions from the mundane to a higher plane and does it with a sense of humor.
The next level is attainable.
“Mastery is not perfection, or even virtuosity. It is giving oneself love, forgiving one’s mistakes, and not allowing earthly evidence to diminish one’s view of oneself as a drop in the Ocean of Perfection.” ‒ Kenny Werner

Mark Cousins
About Mark Cousins
Mark is a Northern Irish-Scottish filmmaker and writer. His themes are the inspiring
power of cinema, cities, walking, childhood, archives and recovery.
At the start of his career he made TV documentaries on childhood, neo-Nazism and
Mikhael Gorbachev. In the mid 90s he and the Edinburgh International Film Festival
showed films in Sarajevo to support its besieged citizens. His first book was
Imagining Reality: The Faber Book of Documentary (“Indispensible” - Times
Literary Supplement).
His 2004 book The Story of Film was published around the world. The Times
called it “by some distance the best book we have read on cinema.” Its latest edition
was published in October 2020. His 930 minute film, The Story of Film: An
Odyssey (“The place from which all future film revisionism should begin” - New York
Times), played in the major film festivals and cinemas, and has had an influence on
film education. Michael Moore gave it the Stanley Kubrick Award, it won the
Peabody Award, was BAFTA Scotland nominated, and received other prizes. In
2021 he added a sequel film, The Story of Film: A New Generation. It premiered
as the launch film of Cannes, was called “poetry in motion” by the Hollywood
Reporter, and “the soul of the festival” by Cannes director Thierry Frémaux. Empire
magazine called it “a poetic opus” and it was nominated for Grierson award.
Cousins’ first feature documentary, The First Movie, about kids in Kurdish Iraq, won
the Prix Italia. It was inspired by growing up in the Troubles in Northern Ireland and
his passionate interest in the role cinema can play in kids’ lives. In 2012 he was
nominated for the London Awards for Art and Performance and the Screen
International award. He was guest curator at the Eye Cinematheque in Amsterdam.
His next feature film, What is this Film called Love?, played in 20 countries, at the
ICA in London, and was nominated for Best Director by BAFTA Scotland. PJ Harvey
called it “revelatory and inspiring”. The rock band Maximo Park wrote a song inspired
by it.
In 2013 he completed Here be Dragons, a film about the vital role of film archives,
especially one in Albania. It won the main prize in the Romania Film Festival. In the
same year he made A Story of Children and Film, which was in the official
selection in Cannes. He curated Cinema of Childhood, a series of 17 films which
toured the UK and Ireland for a year and was supported by the BFI. He received the
Visionary Award in Traverse City and the Saltzgeber Prize at the Berlin Film Festival.
Then he made Life May Be, co-directed with Iranian filmmaker Mania Akbari, and 6
Desires, an adaptation of DH Lawrence’s book Sea and Sardinia. Life May Be was
noted for its feminism and innovation and was called “transcendent and
extraordinarily delicate”. It won the Don Quixote prize. 6 Desires: DH Lawrence
and Sardinia, in which Jarvis Cocker plays the voice of DH Lawrence, had its world
premiere at the London Film Festival and its international premiere at Sundance.
Cousins had his first retrospective at the Wroclaw film festival. Others have followed
in London, Thessaloniki, Finland and Geneva.
Cousins’ The Oar and the Winnowing Fan was a takeover of the DazedDigital
website. His I am Belfast was his first full feature about Northern Ireland. It was
released by the BFI. Variety compared it to the great director Dziga Vertov. His
BBC/BFI film Atomic, a collaboration with the band Mogwai, played in Hiroshima,
near Chernobyl and Coventry Cathedral and at the Edinburgh International Festival.
He curated a season of films for the Romanian Cultural Institute and made a fiction
film, Stockholm My Love, (starring Neneh Cherry, released by BFI). He completed
Bigger than The Shining, a secret project, showable only in underground
circumstances, and wrote The Story of Looking (“Like a wise man looking at the
stars”, the Guardian; “Brilliant” the New York Times). It was nominated for the Saltire
Award for best non-fiction book.
Cousins’ The Eyes of Orson Welles world premiered in Cannes and received rave
reviews. His 2 hour, four-screen Storm in My Heart is about Hollywood sexism and
racism. His 14 hour film Women Make Film premiered at the Venice, Toronto and
Telluride film festivals, is narrated by Jane Fonda, Sharmila Tagore, Debra Winger,
Adjoa Andoh, Kerry Fox and Tilda Swinton, and is showing in many countries. The
Times called it “Exquisite, emotionally resonant and intellectually unassailable. Pure
poetry.” It won the European Film Academy’s inaugural Innovative Storytelling
award, and has led to the restoration of a series of films directed by women.
Two more recent films are The Storms of Jeremy Thomas, about the legendary
film producer – which premiered in Cannes 2021 and won the best documentary in
Spain’s Dias De Cine - and The Story of Looking, in which he filters the history of
looking through his own eye operation. Time Out called it “A rich cinematic journey
into the art of seeing and how it connects us with culture, ourselves and each other.”
It won the Best Non-Fiction Film award at the Seville Film Festival. Cousins recently
completed My Name is Alfred Hitchcock and The March on Rome, an Italian
Palomar production about Mussolini and Fascism, part-shot in Cinecitta in Rome and
starring Alba Rohrwacher. The latter premiered at the Venice film festival, was
called “entirely arresting” by the Guardian, won the audience award for Best
International Documentary in Brazil, and was nominated for a European Film
Academy Award. The former premiered at the Telluride film festival.
In 2022, his films were the subject of a multi screen film installation, Passé Présent
Futur, at the huge Plaza cinema in Geneva, and had a retrospective at the Biograf
film festival in Bologna. He premiered his first art installation, Like a Huge Scotland,
at teh Fruitmarket gallery, Edinburgh, and – along with Cate Blanchette and Sarah
Polley - was given the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema medal at the Telluride
Film Festival.
Cousins has honorary doctorates from the Universities of Edinburgh and Stirling, is
Honorary Professor of film at Queen’s University, was co-artistic director of Cinema
China and did The Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams and A Pilgrimage, with
Tilda Swinton. He and Swinton also ran The 8 ½ Foundation, a two year event
which created a movie birthday for children. It was nominated for the Human Rights
Award. He was chair of the Belfast Film Festival and Docs Ireland. He was recently
given Portugal’s Aurelio de Paz dos Reis international award for Outstanding
Contribution to Cinema (2019), and the British Association of Film, Television and
Screen Studies Outstanding Achievement Award for his work in screen education
(2020).
Mark’s roles in filmmaking, education and advocacy have widened and deepened
with the years. He was an early adopter of small cameras and new technology to
evolve a business model for filmmaking which was sustainable, international and
creatively free.
He has walked across Los Angeles, Belfast, Moscow, Beijing, London, Paris, Berlin,
Dakar and Mexico City. He drove from Edinburgh to Mumbai, and loves night
swimming.

Vashti Bunyan
Vashti Bunyan is an English singer-songwriter. Beginning her career in the mid-1960s, she released her debut album, Just Another Diamond Day in 1970. The album sold very few copies, and Bunyan was discouraged, and abandoned her musical career. By 2000, her album had acquired a cult following; it was re-released, and Bunyan recorded more songs, initiating the second phase of her musical career after a gap of thirty years. She subsequently released two more albums: Lookingaftering in 2005 and Heartleap in 2014.
Wayward, Just Another Life to Live
In 1968, Vashti Bunyan gave up everything and everybody she knew in London to take to the road with a horse, wagon, dog, guitar, and her then-partner.
They made the long journey up to the Outer Hebrides in an odyssey of discovery and heartbreak, full of the joy of freedom and the trudge of everyday reality, sleeping in the woods, fighting freezing winters and homelessness. Along the way, Vashti wrote the songs that would lead to recording her 1970’s album Just Another Diamond Day, the lilting lyrics and guitar conveying innocent wonder at the world around her whilst disguising a deeper turmoil under the surface.
From an unconventional childhood in post-war London to a fledgling career in mid-sixties pop, to the despair and failure to make any headway with her own songs, she rejected the music world altogether and left it all behind. After retreating to a musical wilderness for thirty years, the rediscovery of her recordings in 2000 gave Vashti a second chance to write, record and perform again.

Vivienne Aerts
Originally from the Netherlands, vocalist and songstress Vivienne Aerts is barely categorizable in genre or style. She plays in band formation, duo, and solo, supplemented with a synthesizer, loop station, and effects. Vivienne surprises, challenges, and tells stories. Her lyrics travel to the core of recognition, talk to the soul, and open a barrel of emotions. Heartbreaking, singing of happiness, sometimes humorous, she tells about the things that make life beautiful.
Typuhthâng
Vocalist, performer & composer Vivienne Aerts’ new album ‘Typuhthâng’ will be released in 2023. Together with 100 next-generation female musicians and in collaboration with Original Beans Chocolate, Typuhthâng’ aims to empower the female cacao farmers of Virunga State Park in Congo and replant the rainforest.
The initial pressing of 500 numbered exclusive copies comes with a bar of Femmes de Virunga Chocolate. The cover artwork is screen-printed on cacao pulp paper. The 36 pages interior booklet is printed on French paper and is designed and illustrated by Natalia Olbinski. In addition, you will get a sticker page with lips and beans.

Brenda Sauter Of The Feelies, & Wild Carnation
Delmore Recording Society is excited to announce the upcoming release of Wild Carnation’s
Tricycle as a Record Store Day 2023 exclusive on April 22. Tricycle is the long out-of-print
debut album from this New Jersey-based trio comprising Brenda Sauter (The Feelies) on vocals
and bass, guitarist Rich Barnes and Chris O'Donovan (Grey District) on drums and vocals. This
will be a limited 500 copy pressing on 12” Carnation White vinyl LP: Tricycle’s first release on
vinyl. It’ll come with a download code for the remastered album, demos, and a blistering live set
recorded in Hamburg, Germany January 27, 1997. The live recording features unreleased
originals and a selection of covers including Patti Smith ("Dancing Barefoot"), Ian Tyson ("Four
Strong Winds"), and The Grass Roots ("Wait A Million Years”). Tricycle will be released as a
download and via streaming platforms on April 28, including the original album, all the live
material, demos, etc.
Way back in the 1990s, a young Delmore stumbled into now-defunct NYC nightclub Wetlands
(during the sadly also now defunct, NYU Independent Music Festival), just as Wild Carnation
were about to begin their set. Having lived in NYC / Brooklyn / Hoboken the previous decade,
where countless mesmerizing gigs by The Feelies, Yung Wu, Trypes and Speed The Plough, all
with Brenda Sauter on bass, had been experienced, it was the chance to see her fronting her
new group that drew Delmore in.
A few songs into their set, it was apparent however that this trio was more than a Feelies
offshoot project, despite melodic similarities, and Brenda's cool vocals / presence. Wild
Carnation played raw, loud and fast (and occasionally out of control), with Rich Barnes’
distorted, jangly guitar lines perfectly colliding with Brenda's propelling bass notes, while Chris
O'Donovan kept it together, pounding the living hell out of his drums. It was a garagey, indie
rock mess, more reminiscent of Hib-Tone / Chronic Town era REM, and emergent New Zealand
bands like The Bats and The Clean, than The Feelies.
Delmore was smitten, and determined to sign them, despite the fact that the Delmore label did
not yet exist. In 1993, Wild Carnation's debut 7", "Dodger Blue" b/w "The Lights Are On (But No
One's Home)", taken from raw home demos recorded the previous year, became the second
Delmore release. A full-length album was then commissioned, and an evolving Wild Carnation
holed up at Mix-O-Lydian recording studios with engineer Don Sternecker (The Feelies, Speed
The Plough, Wake Ooloo) to record their debut full length, Tricycle, released in 1994. On
Tricycle, the pastoral quality of their most beautiful ballads was captured to perfection, while
retaining enough of the rawness of the live experience. Waves of critical acclaim followed, from
now defunct publications (CMJ Jackpot! Raygun, Trouser Press) followed, including this one by
Jack Rabid of The Big Takeover (Still going strong!), written for All Music Guide:
"While the hook line for this new local trio would have to be that bassist/leader Brenda Sauter
used to be a member of the later-'80s incarnation of the famous Feelies (and its notable
offshoot, The Trypes), even if you didn't worship at the altar of that group (and especially if you
did!), Wild Carnation is a revelation. While the persistent, pumping beat and hard-played jangle
guitars of most of the tracks here emanate from her previous band and from their forerunners,
the Velvets (especially), Television, and the Byrds - Sauter's beguiling voice is perfect for the
ultra-appealing pop hooks the group writes as well as the thoughtful lyrics she composes.
Trading the occasional Feelies drone for sugar-sweet melodies (yes!) and utilizing the pretty ring
of the guitars to maximum effect, songs such as Wings are the perfect pop confectionery, too
honeyed and delightful to miss capturing your bending heart and too consistently insistent and
edgy to be wimpy, kind of like Reckoning-era R.E.M. It's all so well captured with pristine
production, with balls to match the heart, too! And though the 12 tracks are largely cut from a
similar mode, all seem special just the same on their own. A truly shining, first-rate effort, along
with Lotion's and Nyack's early EPs and the last Flower LP, the best release to come out of a
New York group this decade, and exceptionally crafted at that! Do not miss."

Dan Montgomery
Singer-songwriter Dan Montgomery will be releasing his seventh album Cast-Iron Songs and
Torch Ballads April 7. It was recorded at The Shack in the Back studio in Memphis, TN with
Montgomery and Robert Mache producing. It’s being issued on 12” vinyl LP, digital download
and via streaming services by Fantastic Yes Records.
It’s not unusual for an artist to signal a “return to their roots” a few albums into a career. Usually
this brings out mandolins, banjos, and variations of the folk tradition. Cast-Iron Songs and
Torch Ballads is NOT that.
After six critically acclaimed Americana albums later, Montgomery reconnected with the raw
rock he played in his youth. “I came into possession of a Danelectro, plugged it into an amp and
new songs immediately came pouring out. And they were songs with riffs. It was wild to
experience my current singer/songwriter self, meeting up with that Classic Rock kid from the
past. But it felt totally natural. I knew right away that I had to book time and cut an album with
my band while the moment was hot. And I did.”
Dan’s roots may not be folksy and down home but they are no less real. Coming of age in South
Jersey in the early Seventies, he cut his teeth gigging at dances and parties when he was fourteen.
“I was the youngest in the band,” says Montgomery. “The first songs I played on stage were by
Grand Funk, Bad Company, and Bachman Turner Overdrive. It was wild. At one of our gigs a
guy showed up with a gun because our drummer was fooling around with someone’s wife. And
he was only a junior in high school!” The time and the place were ripe for Dan to begin his
musical education, performing what is now called Classic Rock. “It was just new rock back
then, pre-Freebird rock. I loved it.”
Ultimately, Dan began writing his own songs and quickly found this environment to be unsuited
for his compositions. “I became really serious about lyrics and that flew in the face of dancing
and fist fighting so I began playing solo on the local coffeehouse circuit. It was great. I learned a
lot about folk and country songwriting and eventually, my electric guitar began to gather more
and more dust.”

Mark Stewart
This is a re-upload of my conversation with the late great Mark Stewart Rest In Power!
For those who don't know
Mark Stewart is an artist, vocalist, producer and songwriter from Bristol. As a founding member of The Pop Group and as a soloist, Stewart has remained an anarchic and pioneering figure since the punk era, a constant source of discordance amongst the frontiers of post-punk, dub, industrial and electronic music. In a body of work driven by an explosive form of lyricism and inspired by radical politics, protest movements, theory, philosophy, technology, art and poetry, Stewart has fearlessly cultivated a revelatory collision of ideas, ideals and influences throughout an indisputably ground-breaking and seditious career. Empowered by the DIY incentives of punk Stewart initiated The Pop Group in 1977, subsequently producing some of the most original and combative music of both the post-punk and contemporary era. From 1977 until 1980 Stewart led the charge in a group that completely eschewed punk’s formalism for something far greater. Producing epiphanic, irrepressible anthems, including She’s Beyond Good & Evil and We Are All Prostitutes, both in 1979, as well as masterful, seminal albums including Y in 1979 and For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? in 1980, The Pop Group ignited the revolutionary aesthetic potential of post-punk. The impact of this first incarnation left an immensely significant legacy ultimately leading to the group’s reformation in 2010. With 2015’s refined return Citizen Zombie and 2016’s audacious left-turn Honeymoon On Mars, the group emphatically renewed their relevance, proving as incendiary as ever. Stewart continues to operate as a crucial impetus in the bands ongoing mission. In 1980 Stewart embarked on his solo career inspired by the sounds he had heard during a visit to New York the same year. The virtuosic scratching and early hip hop propagated by Kiss FM’s Kool DJ Red Alert, coupled with the impact of a pile driver at a construction site Stewart happened to encounter there, was enough to encourage his visionary next step. In 1982 Stewart consolidated these encounters into coherent possibilities, forming a group called The Maffia and linking up with producer Adrian Sherwood and his cutting edge label On-U Sound. Alongside a rotating cast of session players, initially comprised of members of African Head Charge, Creation Rebel & Dub Syndicate, and later made up of Doug Wimbish, Keith LeBlanc and Skip McDonald (the erstwhile rhythm section of The Sugarhill Gang) Stewart & The Maffia fashioned an abrasive confection of dub reggae, early hip hop and industrial noise that was shattering, seismic and completely ahead of its time. Headed by an iconic version of William Blake’s eponymous ancient poem, Stewart & The Maffia unveiled the Jerusalem EP in 1982, swiftly followed by their cult 1983 LP Learning To Cope With Cowardice. Stewart later moved to Mute Records in 1985 for the ferocious proto-industrial militancy of As The Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade and successive appearances on the label continued to break untold new ground, from 1987’s Mark Stewart to 1990’s Metatron and 1995’s Control Data. Stewart has continued to plot an utterly uncompromising and individual course into the 2000s, with a streak of solo material that has included Edit, The Politics of Envy, The Exorcism of Envy and Experiments. Preserving his vociferous energy and defiant stance whilst advancing, as always, into unfamiliar territories, this work bears all the traces of Stewart’s enduring severity and modernism, an exploratory power reinforced by a host of legendary collaborators and artistic descendants including the likes of Primal Scream, Keith Levene (Public Image Ltd / The Clash), Richard Hell, Kenneth Anger, Daddy G (Massive Attack), Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, The Bug, Kahn (Kahn & Neek, Young Echo) and Factory Floor. Stewart continues to exert an inestimable impact on a disparate range of ensuing artists and scenes. His work has been acknowledged and celebrated as a vital inspiration by the likes of Nick Cave, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), Tricky, Massive Attack, St Vincent and countless others, while his eye for unorthodox extremity has instigated myriad new evolutions, blueprinting industrial, trip-hop, noise-hop, dance-punk and many other subsequent conceptions. Through a staunch, unrelenting desire to confront, deconstruct and make anew, Stewart has become of the most influential and forward-looking luminaries of post-punk, or indeed, any other form of music. An artist often imitated but never bettered. Mark's Info https://www.markstewartmusic.com/ https://www.facebook.com/markstewartm...

Charming Disaster Part 2
Brooklyn-based goth-folk duo Charming Disaster’s upcoming fifth album Super Natural History is a musical cabinet of curiosities featuring songs inspired by both the natural world and the metaphysical realm; the cover art itself is composed of curios and oddities collected on their travels or gifted to them by fans. The album was produced by band members Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris, half the tracks recorded at Figure 8 in Brooklyn, NY, the rest at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD, with the last song being a home recording. Super Natural History will be released on CD, as a 12-inch colored vinyl LP and on all digital platforms on March 3, 2023. The duo’s latest release unites the worlds of magic and science with ten songs that explore subjects like witchcraft, monsters, and the underworld alongside bats, plants, poisons, and parasites. Super Natural History is an alchemical experiment of sorts—magic and science may seem like contradictory concepts, but for Charming The Disaster they are opposite sides of the same coin: alternate ways to see the world and consider its mysteries.

MIIRRORS
Motion And Picture is a cinematic soundscape of honest lyrical introspection and reactive
abrasion, a personal timespan of disillusionment, resolve, and return of hope. Waves of cascading textures blur the sonic lines between synthesizers and guitars a la My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive as Shawn Rios's atypical rhythms anchor the songs while Brian McSweeney
ascends beyond Andre Miller, Patrick Riley, and Dmitri Rakhubas's expanding colors.
What began as a chance encounter on an airplane between McSweeney and Rios 22 years ago
grew into a decades-long friendship which ignited the inevitable musical partnership that formed
Chicago's MIIRRORS. They reverse-engineered the usual process of becoming a band by
prioritizing album creation over live performance while at their own pace, morphing the duo into
a cohesive quintet of seasoned multi-instrumentalists along the way veterans Rakhuba, Miller,
and Riley completed the lineup, and they evolved the collective sound quickly, momentarily
trading the stage for the tracking room.
While recording, the group began self-releasing singles just two months before the pandemic
took its toll on the music community, but not before the public took notice of their imagined
version of Jeff Buckley's rare 1997 four-track demo

David Heatley Part 2
IF...
Second full length solo record by David Heatley
Available on all streaming and digital platforms March 24, 2023 from Dream Puppy Records.
Genre: Indie Pop
All songs were written, performed, and produced by David Heatley in 2023. They were recorded
at Piety Street Arnaudville Studio. Additional recording took place at Restoration Sound with
engineer Lorenzo Wolff. String, horn and woodwind arrangements were done by Jimbo Walsh.
The assistant engineer was Kirkland Middleton. The album was mastered by Dave Glasser of
Airshow.
Featuring members of Lost Bayou Ramblers and Givers, plus Julie Odell, Sarah Quintana, Lilli
Lewis and Tony Award-winner Michael Cerveris.
Heatley describes “If...” as a portrait of someone in the throes of “impossible love,” with all the
attendant euphoria and longing pulsing beneath each track. “I’ve always had an issue with
crushes and falling in love. I fell in love with all three guest singers on my last record.” The bulk
of the songs came to him while recording down in Louisiana for the first time in the summer of
2021, surrounded by an inspiring and passionate array of New Orleans musician-heartthrobs.
What he couldn’t have known was that by the time this new record was released, his personal
life would be entirely rearranged and would line up in an uncanny way with many of the
themes of the songs he had written. “It’s honestly eerie how prescient some of these songs
turned out to be. I’ve often gotten song ideas in my dreams and I write them out and record
them only to see how they perfectly fit some situation I’m living through years later. It’s enough
to make you believe in Carl Jung’s theory of the archetypal field.”

John Leon Of The Royal Arctic Institute Part 2
From Coma To Catharsis is the second full exploratory mission in the current five-piece
incarnation of NYC/NJ-based instrumental ensemble, The Royal Arctic Institute. It’s the sequel
to last year's From Catnap To Coma, and like its predecessor, the new mini-album was recorded
and produced by James McNew (Yo La Tengo) in the historic Neumann Leather Factory in
Hoboken, New Jersey. From Coma To Catharsis is being released February 4th, 2023 by
Already Dead Tapes and Records and will be available on cassette (duh!), as a paid download,
and on streaming platforms. Later in the year, the band hopes to release both titles on vinyl.
At present, The Royal Arctic Institute comprises five musicians who have played extensively
with other groups and/or as backing/session musicians: drummer Lyle Hysen (Das Damen,
Arthur Lee, The Misguided), guitarists John Leon (Roky Erickson, Summer Wardrobe, Abra
Moore) and Lynn Wright (And The Wiremen, Bee And Flower, Shilpa Ray), bassist David
Motamed (Das Damen, Two Dollar Guitar, Arthur Lee, Townes Van Zandt), and keyboardist
Carl Baggaley (Headbrain, Gramercy Arms).
What are the first things you would feel coming out of a coma? Would it be cathartic, a full
release of all your emotions? What would that sound like? From Coma To Catharsis tries to
capture that auditory experience replacing the steadfast emotions expressed on From Catnap to
Coma with the sounds of dreaming, then awakenings.
All the pieces were created communally, deconstructing then reconstructing material mainly
composed by guitarist John Leon with a couple written by other band members. McNew
recorded the band in a live setting with no digital magic and minimal overdubs except for pedal
steel work by John.
This record also highlights the band's musical development after a further year of playing
together. This includes songwriting contributions by Dave (“Angleman’s Lament”), and Lynn
(“The Elated World”) as well as more input from Carl. “This is the third record I've played on,”
explains Baggaley, “and on this one we really broke the songs down to the bones. I was able to
bring in new influences like King Crimson-style mellotron and electric piano inspired by the late
Billy Preston performances during the recording of the Beatles’ Let It Be album.” Besotted by
2021’s Beatles documentary series stemming from those sessions, Lyle draped his drums in tea-
towels ala Ringo for the song “Passover Bucket.”
Regarding that same title, John says, “During the COVID lockdown, everyone’s kids were home
and parents were scrambling and grasping at straws to entertain them. A Jewish friend of mine
decided to celebrate Easter with her children to give them something to do. They were fascinated
by the concept of Easter baskets. The following year, instead of Easter baskets, the children were
given Passover Buckets to keep them quiet.”
From Coma To Catharsis is, sadly, guitarist Lynn Wright’s last work with the band as a full
member as he’s recently relocated to Berlin to further his career in music and fine dining. The
band will continue to play shows and record with Lynn when possible, but perhaps as the past
two years have shown us, who knows if everything will be cathartic, or just a return to a coma.

Ivan Julian
Ivan Julian has been one of music's most celebrated players and most in-demand collaborators for more than four decades.
Indeed, Ivan Julian has spent his life soaking up a wealth of experiences, musical and otherwise. The son of a Navy officer, he grew up in such exotic locales as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, nurturing a sensitive, creative streak that quickly manifested itself musically. At the age of 13, while living in Washington, D.C., he became the singer in a Led Zeppelin cover band; the following year, he began playing guitar. Having already studied bassoon and saxophone, Julian spent his high school years studying music theory as a part-time student in a college program. At 19, his wanderlust led him to London, where he joined U.K. R&B hitmakers The Foundations, (Build Me Up Buttercup) with whom he toured throughout Great Britain and Europe. It was during one of these tours that he decided to stay on in Macedonia to absorb and study the musical scales and rhythms that would have a major influence on his playing.
Then Julian returned to the U.S. and settled in New York, just in time to become part of the emerging punk rock movement. A founding member of the seminal Richard Hell and the Voidoids, he was now playing alongside trend-setting punk poet Hell, fabled guitarist Robert Quine and drummer Marc Bell (a.k.a. Marky Ramone). Julian’s instrumental and songwriting contributions to the band’s classic album Blank Generation established him as one of the scene’s most acclaimed and influential axemen.
After the Voidoids disbanded, Julian stepped out to form the Outsets as a vehicle for his own vocal and songwriting efforts. Combining rock, funk and African rhythms, the Outsets became a beloved fixture on New York’s burgeoning club scene, winning considerable critical acclaim for such releases as the debut single “I’m Searchin’ for You”/”Fever,” a self-titled EP produced by Garland Jeffreys and the posthumously released The Punk/Funk Voodoo Collection. Teaming up with Bush Tetras singer Cynthia Sley Julian’s next band, the Lovelies, won substantial attention with the release of the Mad Orphan LP. Also, during this time he regrouped with former bandmate Richard Hell to do an extensive tour of Japan.
By this point, Julian’s abilities as a collaborator had become sought after by a wide array of acts. He plays on “The Call Up” and “Ivan Meets GI Joe” with The Clash (on their Sandinista album), collaborated with Afrika Bambaataa and Bernie Worrell of Parliament/Funkadelic. He also joined England’s Shriekback for two tours of North America and Europe. Julian spent much of the 1990s touring and recording with Matthew Sweet.
In recent years, Ivan has concentrated mainly on studio work, producing and/or recording artist such as Sean Lennon and producing three albums by The Fleshtones. He’s also developed his recording studio, SuperGiraffeSound into one of New York’s hottest new recording facilities, working with numerous local, national and international bands.
His solo LP, The Naked Flame was named one of the best records of the year by several trade magazines in Europe and the states including Trouser Press. Soon after came The Fauntleroys EP, Below the Pink Pony, a collaboration with Alejandro Escovedo, Nick Tremulis and Linda Pittman.
His newest album ‘Swing Your Lanterns’ is available on PRAVDA Records. The songs encompass his experiences of the past five years and more; Some of which, we have all lived through.

Timo Kaarkoski Of Armored Dawn (Brazilian Power Metal Band)
Armored Dawn is, without a doubt, one of the revelations of Brazilian Power Metal. Formed in 2014 in Sao Paulo, today, they have three albums released worldwide. Over these few years, Armored Dawn has been gaining fans wherever they go
Timo Kaarkoski
Born in Finland many, many years ago, Timo started his musical adventures at the age of 7 playing the violin. When he was 14, he gave up the violin and decided to play a much louder six-string instrument…
Influenced by the names like Ritchie Blackmore, Frank Marino, David Gilmour, and Gary Moore, Timo surrendered to his passion for rock n’ roll and the guitar. Around 2000, Timo decided to change his life, left his frozen country in search of some sun and moved to Brazil. A few years later, he joined the band União, with whom he released only one album in 2003, and toured South America. Then, he joined another band, called Temple of Sin, which released an album and toured Brazil.
Today, Timo is a great Gibson collector, has a house full of guitars and cats, in addition to being part of one of the biggest metal bands in Brazil on the rise, Armored Dawn. He has been part of the band since its beginning in 2014. With Armored Dawn, he has recorded three albums “Power of Warrior”, “Barbarians in Black” and “Viking Zombie”. He also accumulates film productions of video clips and several presentations throughout Brazil and Europe. He shared the stages with big names like Fates Warning, Saxon and Megadeth, in addition to having played on “Motörhead’s Motörboat”, the Motörhead Cruise.

Vanillaphase
Vanillaphase are a four piece electronic band from Cleveland, Ohio who believe in the cross pollination of musical ideas from diverse genres. Harnessing the power of bone-shaking beats welded with catchy melodies, lush harmonies, and spacey atmospherics, Vanillaphase are tour-de-force in musical surrealism and have been described as “a musical portal to a blissed out galaxy”.
Formed in the quarantine days of late 2020, Nico Denaldo, Taylor Ripley and Rick Taggert quickly released their sultry debut EP, “One Trick Pony”, as well as the uptempo, full-throttle single, “Almost Supernova” in early 2021. They further showcased their unique vibe with a string of livestream performances during the pandemic, the latest of which was highlighted by the late-summer addition of their new female vocal powerhouse, Generic Goth Girl.
Their heavy, yet polished electronic sound is a satisfying, seamless mix of trip hop and post-industrial, touching on elements of their collective influences, ranging from Thrill Kill Kult and Meat Beat Manifesto to Aphex Twin and The Orb. They released their new album Magic Suitcase on August 12th, 2022.

Jake Burns Of Rockstead
Interview with singer-songwriter/guitarist Jake Burns of Rockstead OH based rock reggae band
About Rockstead
The feeling of love. The power of unity. The essence of happiness. The strength of togetherness and positive vibrations. The highs of living life and the lows of dealing with its obstacles. All of these things encapsulate the music of Cincinnati, OH-based Rockstead, a five-piece, passion driven rock/reggae group.
With roots leading as far back as middle school, Rockstead combines a lifetime full of influences ranging from rock, punk, reggae, jam and metal. In their early days Rockstead ruled the college party scene in Ohio with a schedule full of impromptu house shows that led to packed basements of DIY venues and later, massive crowds attending college fests such as Ohio University’s infamous spring festivals. This early success catalyzed the debut of their first album “Wake Up and Live” (2013) shortly followed by their popular self-recorded “Rise” EP (2014). These releases ignited their inner road warrior leading to a plethora of plays at music festivals and concert venues across the Midwest. Since then, Rockstead continues to widen their reach touring throughout the Eastern U.S. and down into Florida.
Though member changes have occurred over the years, front man singer/guitarist Jake Burns continues to drive the group forward as they have shared stages with international acts such as The Wailers (Jamaica) and Sticky Fingers (Australia) as well as many staple East coast reggae acts like Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Badfish, Tropidelic, Bumpin’ Uglies and Ballyhoo!. The band has now grown to include Nate Anuci (drums), Jacob Riley (lead guitar), and Alex Kessis (bass). With a healthy gap since their last full release (Homegrown, 2016) Rockstead dropped their first studio album “You’re In Control” in September 2020 which scored them multiple features in blogs and podcasts across the scene. By using their relentless high-energy performances and genre-bending set lists, while aligning their unwavering dedication to the do-it-yourself work ethic, Rockstead shows no sign of slowing down their mission of bringing people together through music.

Nasty Facts
Nastyfacts were fronted by bassist/lead singer/songwriter Cherl Boyze, an 18 year oldQueer POC with the rest of the band being in their mid-teens or younger in 1981 when their three-song, 7-inch debut, Drive My Car, was released on the independent Jimboco label. The record was a word-of-mouth hit and sold strongly in the U.S. despite group members being too young to tour. John Peel played it repeatedly on his legendary indie- centric BBC show and helped get it released in the UK. Over 40 years after their release these songs still capture the imaginations of music lovers the world over, showing up on OG punk compilations like Killed By Death while rabid collectors pay $300 for original copies, and counterfeiters regularly sell out bootleg pressings. The reason for the EP’s continued appeal is nicely captured in Steve Gardner’s (editor of Noise For Heroes / Another Tuneless Racket fanzines) description of the music contained here in this re-release’s liner notes: “The drums were crazed and hammering, as wild and primal in their own way as Rat Scabies on “New Rose”. The bass motored up and down, laying out a great melody but reinforcing the rhythm as well. The guitar was power-chording nirvana, and when the lead break came it was perfect. The vocals weren’t the hyper-aggro thing that was the stock-in-trade most of the furious punks of the day; the lead was handled deftly by Cherl Boyze, who, I wrote in NFH #9, was ‘black, female, and at 18 the oldest member of the band”. She didn’t snarl, but she didn’t croon, either, and when her male bandmates added backing vocals the result was pop/punk magic. And finally, the production had all kinds of wild bad driving sound effects that just elevated everything.’” Nastyfacts were part of a Brooklyn teen-punk scene that included the Speedies and The Stimulators. Their core line-up consisted of Cherl Boyze on bass and lead vocals, guitarists Brad Craig and Jeff ;Range Tischler with Genji Searizak & Siraisi on drum; these last three also sang back-up. They began playing music together while attending St. Ann’s School in Brooklyn and after a year of playing covers locally began building a following in Manhattan playing amateur nights at CBGBs and then regular slots at Max’s Kansas City and other venues that’d host all-ages shows. They soon accumulated a full album’s worth of solid original material, but unfortunately only made studio recordings of the three amazing songs that make up Drive My Car.

Phil Marcade Of The Senders
The Senders are the great lost band of New York Punk. Begun in 1976, they were peers of all the early legends – Ramones, Blondie, Heartbreakers, etc. Their brand of dangerous sidewinder r&b, with a twist of rockabilly, shook the rafters at CBGB and Max's Kansas City, yet barely registered beyond the boroughs.

Julian Shah-Tayler Aka The Singularity Music
Julian Shah-Tayler, Aka The Singularity
Frontman and multi-instrumentalist Julian Shah-Tayler (formerly of the band Whitey) childlike fascination with science, space and the big questions that trouble the human condition has fueled the creative output of his electronic rock and roll. “Everything burst out of the center of a supermassive black hole,” remarks Julian, “and we are going back there one day, so let’s just enjoy it.” A Londoner relocated to LA, Julian’s prolific catalog of music exceeds 300 songs, many of which have been featured in films and hit TV shows including Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and The Newsroom, while also turning up on broadcasts ranging from UK television’s Popstar to NBC Sports. In 2014, Shah-Tayler won the “Golden Trailer” award for his work with Lana Del Ray on Disney’s Maleficent trailer. He also performed one of his songs in front of Bill Clinton, Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese for the Unite For Humanity charity at the Oscars. Three of his songs were the “hits” for the focus band in the music movie Plush, directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Lords Of Dogtown). Shah-Tayler did all this while co-founding an LA charity called Art Angeles, teaching music to underprivileged kids in Watts.

Jeff Tripoli
Tripoli's drumming reflects a wide background of independent musical influences. At the root of his dynamic framework resides the deep passion to provide fresh rhythms and artistic perspective.
On the road and in the studio, Tripoli performs with Celtic folk rockers, The Town Pants. A consistent audience favorite at Celtic, Folk, World, Irish and even Rock festivals throughout the United States, Canada and in Europe.
Jeff Tripoli's new 2022 album release, called ‘Wabi Sabi’, offers in his unusual manner a wide variety of original drum set and percussion compositions. The album takes you on a journey through Tripoli’s musical improvisations while experimenting with new sonic landscapes.
It also reveals Tripoli’s explorations deep into found sounds and self made instruments created in Tripoli’s recording studio in Syracuse, New York. Personal expressions of psychedelic rhythms and musical collaborations are laid out in a pure and unfiltered form with special guest appearances by Butch Norton (Lucinda Williams, Eels), Jeff Tortora (Blue Man Group Las Vegas) and Griffin Brady (Slyboots Circus).

Mark Bingham
Interview with Mark Bingham
Guitarist-singer-songwriter-arranger and esteemed producer Mark Bingham (a 2021 recipient of Offbeat magazine’s Lifetime Achievement in Music Business Award), has dedicated over 50 years to pursuing creativity regardless of category. From working with seminal punk and No Wave bands MX-80 Sound and Bush Tetras to Cajun groups Michot’s Melody Makers and Lost Bayou Ramblers to Beat poets Ed Sanders and Allen Ginsberg to jazz artists John Scofield, Wycliffe Gordon and Nicholas Payton to celebrated pop stars like Marianne Faithfull, Dr. John, R.E.M., Roy Orbison and Jon Batiste, Bingham has always sought out projects that get his creative juices flowing. “There’s been no linear path,” he said of his storied career. “It’s been up and down and all around, and you just try to find good people to work with.” A true child of the ‘60s, Bingham is from an era when ‘Question Authority’ was de rigueur. He ended up taking it to heart, both politically and musically. While attending Indiana University in the early ‘70s, at the peak of the anti-war movement on the campuses all across America, the Bloomington, Indiana native formed the Screaming Gypsy Bandits, a sprawling 10-piece theatrical psych rock group with an absurdist/prankster bent that shared the renegade stance of such bands of the day as Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band and the Hampton Grease Band (led by visionary frontman Col. Bruce Hampton).

Rebecca Pidgeon
Rebecca Pidgeon was born in Cambridge, MA and raised primarily in Edinburgh, Scotland, gravitating towards music as a child. Mom and Dad introduced her to the likes of James Taylor, while she eventually discovered both Kate Bush and The Sex Pistols on her own. She fronted the band Ruby Blue for three records before relocating to the United States where she launched her solo career. Fan favorite albums followed including The Raven (1994), The New York Girls’ Club (1996), The Four Marys (1998), Tough On Crime (2000), and Behind the Velvet Curtain (2008), four songs appearing in the critically acclaimed film Red Belt. The ensuing decade saw her release Slingshot (2011), Blue Dress On (2013), Bad Poetry (2014), and Sudden Exposure to Light (2019). Praising the latter, American Songwriter affirmed, “She’s the real deal,” and Glide Magazine noted, “Pidgeon’s prolific work as a songwriter and vocalist is akin to the self-immersion she undertakes for her mesmerizing performances on camera.”
In addition, she has captivated audiences on-screen as a much sought-after film and television actress. Among dozens of credits, she has appeared in celebrated classics such as The Spanish Prisoner (1997), State and Main (2000), and Heist (2001) opposite the likes of Gene Hackman, William H. Macy, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Additionally, she has appeared in blockbusters a la Red(2010) and NETFLIX’s Bird Box (2018), to name a few.
Parts of Speech Pieces of Sound, however, is the best way to get to truly know Rebecca. “This is a very special record to me; with its connection to yoga, this does bring everything full circle for me.”

Eszter Balint
Interview with Eszter Balint.
Eszter Balint released her new album Airless Midnight in late 2015. It was recorded at New York’s Brooklyn Recording and Richmond’s Montrose Recording, produced by JD Foster, and features Chris Cochrane, Marc Ribot, Dave Schramm on guitar as well as well as singer songwriter Sam Phillips on harmonies.
Eszter has been very busy for the past few years. In 2014 she was making progress gathering material for the new album when out of the blue-after a long hiatus from acting she was offered a part she couldn’t refuse. She agreed to star in a six-episode arc of Louis C.K.’s F/X series Louie, Season 4, a performance which would earn her considerable critical praise. Eszter also improvised compositions, sang and played violin for the episodes which featured her performance.
As soon as filming wrapped, Eszter returned to work on her album. Eszter starred in Jim Jarmusch’s classic Stranger than Paradise, and was featured in Steve Buscemi’s Trees Lounge, and worked alongside Mia Farrow and John Malkovich in Woody Allen’s Shadows and Fog, among other film appearances.
She continues, “In 1995, while living in Los Angeles, I decided to fully devote my artistic energies to music-making and words writing, more specifically to becoming a performing and recording songwriter. I have two albums out, Flicker (1999) and Mud (2004), both produced by JD Foster, who has made wonderful records with Richard Buckner and Marc Ribot among many others, which were both received with critical praise. “I have since been fortunate enough to have been asked to lend my violin playing and singing to works by people I consider true artists, most notably guitarist Marc Ribot, and Michael Gira of Swans fame,”
Eszter can be heard on violins on two Angels of Light albums as well as Swans’ The Seer, and on vocals and other instruments on multiple Marc Ribot projects including Ceramic Dog’s Your Turn, – a band she was a guest member of through 2009 – and on an upcoming album of Mr. Ribot’s songs.

Mike Baggetta
Mike’s singular and very personal musical style seeks to blur the lines between song and solo, while connecting a wide range of musical genres that influence him. The press says this approach is “…beguilingly atmospheric…” (Time Out New York) and that “Baggetta’s music is quietly transgressive… Even when he plays a lot of notes, his playing can sound almost static, as though ideas were being snagged out of thin air.” (Hartford Courant)
Baggetta’s most recent release is the album Everywhen We Go, his second album with drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Mike Watt on the BIG EGO label.
He also leads the band mssv, is a post-genre power trio featuring the iconoclastic rhythm team of drummer Stephen Hodges and bassist Mike Watt. They have just released their self-titled debut studio album, Main Steam Stop Valve, on BIG EGO Records, following up 2020’s Live Flowers album on Striped Light Records, recorded live in Philadelphia, PA and Northampton, MA (with special guest J Mascis), as well as 3 limited edition 7” releases recorded solely over quarantine, featuring guest artists Petra Haden and Nels Cline.
After completing their first full US tour in spring 2022 mssv recorded their second full length album for release next year. This band grew out of Baggetta’s first album for BIG EGO, Wall of Flowers, which featured a reimagining of his music alongside bassist Mike Watt and drummer Jim Keltner.
Baggetta has had the pleasure to work all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fred Lane, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Joseph C. Philips’ Numinous, Imani Uzuri, Viktor Krauss, David Wax Museum, Julian Lage, Jon Irabagon, Jerome Harris, Tom Harrell, Eivind Opsvik, Jeremy Udden, and Ruth Brown among many others.

Eugene Hütz of Gogol Bordello
Eugene Hütz is a Ukrainian-born singer, composer, disc jockey, actor, and frontman of the Gypsy Punk Gogol Bordello!
Perseverance carries us through the most turbulent, traumatic, and trying of times. When all hope seems lost, it shines a light from the inside that’s impossible to extinguish. That light also burns bright at the heart of Gogol Bordello. Since 1999, the band has consistently riled up audiences with an inimitable patchwork of raucous punk and Eastern European Gypsy-swing. Since then, these sonic insurgents have been on the verge of infiltrating the mainstream, remaining undeniably embedded within the zeitgeist. A multicultural band that combines Eastern, Western, and also Latin traditions, they’re the rare force who could light up stages alongside System of a Down and Primus, go on Warped TouralongsideRancid and Dropkick Murphys, a duet with Regina Spektor, cut an album with Rick Rubin or Steve Albini, or appear in art house films such as Liev Schreiber’s everything is Illuminated with Elijah Wood orFilth and Wisdomhelmed by Madonna. Gogol Bordello is also the subject of several documentaries, including Gogol Bordello Non-Stop, ThePied Piper of Hutzovina, and a new one in the making.“Just as Adrenaline is the substance that is linked with alarming us and often preserving our lives, SOLIDARITINEis all of that...plus empathy and unity. It’s kind of a collective Adrenaline,” explains frontman Eugene Hutz about the title of their eighth full-length studio album SOLIDARITINE. This title reflected the shift of the times in terms of political and cultural polarity, violence, and strife, addressing it head-on.“Songwriting is a sacred craft, and punk is a great place for it,” says Eugene. “For me, punk rock was always about that WoodyGuthrie-ness and work ethic: ‘All you fascists are bound to lose!’ It’smusic of pure impact with that experience-driven intellectual insight into the class struggle that comes only with working-class territory without the bullshit or pseudo-musicality. “The New York-based collective—Eugene Hutz (vocals, guitar), Sergey Ryabtsev (violin), Pedro Erazo (vocals, percussion), Boris Pelekh (guitar), Ashley Tobias (vocals), Korey Kingston (drums), and Gil Alexandre (bass) proclaim the spirit of resilience in the face of adversity louder than ever onSOLIDARITINE (Casa Gogol/Cooking Vinyl].“Our music was always about perseverance,” says Eugene. “Take a group of people who have endured immigrant traumas and dislocation, and then through the magic of band-synergy and band-alchemy, they make something out of it—like an uplifting gypsy punky party that entertains and inspires people worldwide. Suddenly, humankind encounters a worldwide pandemic, war, and multiple calamities. This is when punk rock is needed the most and where Gogol performs the best because that’s where we came from. It’s not like we're invincible, but I feel like maybe we got a bit of natural resilience.WhentheChernobyl disaster happened in 1986, I was only 13. That was my first evacuation.”In 2021 as the live music world reawakened from the pandemic pause, Gogol Bordello was one of the first to restart touring, but inevitably several members caught Covid and left the tour to recover. Eugene grabbed an electric guitar along with his usual acoustic and played them both interchangeably to finish the tour.

Darwin Meiners Of The Night Crickets
Interview with Singer-songwriter Multi-instrumentalist Darwin Meiners!
Night Crickets, a long-distance groove affair conducted during the drawn-out days of lockdown and beyond. Featuring David J, Victor DeLorenzo, and Darwin Meiners. Iconic and foundational bands in the history of alternative music certainly include Bauhaus, Love And Rockets, and Violent Femmes. San Francisco-born artist Darwin Meiners was a fan of all three. A chance meeting 13 years ago with David J (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) grew into a friendship, and Darwin not only became a bandmate but David J’s manager. After reaching out to Victor DeLorenzo through e-mail, Darwin met the Violent Femmes drummer after the Femmes’ Coachella set in 2013. Soon after the three collaborated on Darwin’s 2014 release Souvenir. As the pandemic took hold, Darwin was looking for a new project to occupy the lock-down time and approached Victor, who was keen to proceed and suggested that David join as well. The musical trust established between these three was immediate and Night Crickets were born. Within weeks a global process was initiated between them, the recordings eventually forming the album, A Free Society. To say this is something of a dream come true for music fans would be entirely accurate. (The band’s name came from one of many Zoom meetings between the three members. After addressing various pressing musical issues the conversation rambled somewhat and turned to the subject of David Lynch, with David J telling an anecdote which was told to him by Lynch’s sound designer, John Neff. Lynch had asked Neff to obtain a field recording of crickets chirping at night for inclusion in Mulholland Drive. When Neff played him the tape, the director immediately recognized the sound that the insects make when it is light which is apparently a little different to their nocturnal chirp. “No! No! No! These are day crickets, John! I want my night crickets!” Victor, Darwin, and David then shared a look of mutual realization and instantly agreed that the project now had a name!) In Night Crickets’ own words: Night Crickets, a long distance groove affair conducted during the drawn out days of lockdown and beyond. Audio files shared from Los Angeles to Milwaukee, from London to the San Francisco Bay, and the ghosts of Candlestick Park shimmer through the fog, the Devil comes a-knocking on Peter Laughner’s door and Amanda Gorman conjures forth words of inspiration for the dawn of the new millennium. David J, Victor DeLorenzo, and Darwin spearhead a loose collective of like-minded creative souls left stranded in their respective locales due to the great pandemic, yet through sheer tenacity and a burning desire to collaborate and create they transcend the restrictions of the times and pull together a glorious ‘gesamtkunstwerk’ that draws from the past, the present and the imagined future. Hark! Night Crickets are chirping as the world is set on fire and the sun is going down.
