After his victory over McClellan in the Peninsula Campaign, General Lee seizes the initiative and marches to destroy a second Union army guarding Washington. With anti-war sentiment building in Washington, Lincoln cannot afford to have this army destroyed. The Last Full Measure: Hell's Half Acre
Last week, we examined the Battle of the Wilderness and Grant's failed attempt to surprise Lee in the woods southwest of Fredericksburg. This week, we examine the next great battle in Grant's overland campaign, The Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, taking place just over a week after the Wilderness. He will specifically look at the 23 hours struggle for a 150-yard long section of trenches which would become known as "Hell's Half Acre," or, more famously, "The Bloody Angle."

LeMay's Inferno: Part Four: Dead Men by Mass Production
As American forces prepare for the invasion of Japan, the Navy needs a protected anchorage from which to launch such an invasion, and the air force needs a large island to build air bases on near Japan. The island of Okinawa, 300 miles south of Kyushu, fits both needs perfectly. The Japanese, aware of Okinawa's importance, fortify the island and deploy over a hundred thousand troops there. As the US Army and Navy begin the battle for Okinawa, the don't know it yet, but it will become the deadliest battle of World War Two in the Pacific Theater.
