Ep 187 Stephen Evans Returns pt 2

Stephen Evans returns and he's faster, stronger, more agile. Will probably get drafted in the first round.   Find Stephen Evans and the True Grits here www.stephenevansmusic.com www.facebook.com/stephenevansmusic https://www.instagram.com/stephenevansmusic/ https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/stephenevansandthetruegrits/buzz-of-bees   Thanks to Jack Hyphen for the closing song https://www.facebook.com/JackHyphenMusic https://www.instagram.com/jackhyphen/ https://x.com/JackHyphen https://www.youtube.com/@JackHyphen https://www.tiktok.com/@jackhyphenmusic https://jackhyphen.com/   Subscribe to the podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wnc-original-music/id1378776313 https://www.iheart.com/podcast/wnc-original-music-31067964/ This link has all the other places to subscribe https://gopod.me/wncom   Follow on Social Media https://www.facebook.com/wncoriginalmusic https://www.wncoriginalmusic.com https://www.instagram.com/wnc_original_music/   All music used by permission   After many years of vacillating between being a professional musician and building a nest in Asheville, NC, Stephen Evans finally asked his friends, Brian Shoemaker (bass), Sam Hess (drums), and Woodstock (mandolin), to form the True Grits and make some music together in 2014.  The very next year, Stephen Evans & the True Grits released their first LP "Something to Bleed".  Inspired to release more music, they followed two years later with their EP "Under the Bridge."  Both records have received local and regional praise for their passion and creativity.  Stephen's strong melodic songwriting style is a blend of vivid imagery, darkness, and hopeful optimism.  There's no denying the feeling that shines through with his evocative vocals and lyrics.  Songs like ‘Ghost Among the Trees’, 'The Garden', 'Cherokee Hills', 'Shining Star', and '1000 Roses' are beacons of his folk rock song craft. With radio play on Western North Carolina radio stations, as well as shows around the region, Stephen Evans & the True Grits are becoming a local favorite.    "Buzz of Bees" is their latest album, released in December of 2022, of folk rock with some songs dipping their toes into other styles like Americana, Latin Folk, and Vaudeville.  Singles from the LP, ‘Ghost Among the Trees’, ‘Winning the Day’, and ‘Estefania’, are already receiving radio play on local stations as well as national online radio and music podcasts.  Look for Stephen Evans & the True Grits playing fun live shows all around the area to support this beautiful album.   Emerging Manchester indie up and comer Jack Hyphen returns with the vibrant, breezy new single ‘Not Medicinal’ (June 28th). Having made a name for himself as one to watch with live shows in and around Manchester, Jack Hyphen continues to showcase the intricate songwriting and radiant musicianship which has seen him build a fanbase.    Emerging from the breakup of Herefordshire Indie/Rock band Point Zero, where he served as the frontman, Jack returned with acoustic singles that showcased his vocal and lyrical prowess. His evolution into a 4-piece alternative pop/rock outfit in mid-2019 brought a punchy, atmospheric edge to his music.    The new single ‘Not Medicinal’ continues this approach with intricate interweaving guitar lines, smothered in atmospheric modulation and reverb which glides over the punching drums and driving bass. Topped with Jack’s emotive, understated vocal delivery, the track blends its energetic undercurrent with an ethereal edge to create a unique, accessible yet thoughtful and delicate soundscape.    Having already gained widespread press support and radio play from the likes of Amazing Radio and XS Manchester, Jack has opened for a number of breakout bands including Crystal Tides, Jeremiah Ferrari, and James Walsh (Starsailor), even gaining acclaim from BBC Radio 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins for the quality of his live performance. Jack continues to grow, showcasing some of his finest work yet on the new single ‘Not Medicinal’.

Growing up in a musical family with a religious background, Andrew gained his first vocal experience singing hymns with family and in church choirs. That same passionate feeling within himself has prompted Andrew's emotional singing power and style throughout his life.  After leaving home at the age of sixteen he spent years honing his guitar craft and living a gypsy life of travel, adventure seeking, and soul searching(with a few bumps along the way). In 2020 Andrew landed a coveted weekly performance with the house band at Jack of the Wood, an Asheville bluegrass institution. Soon after he joined The Well Drinkers, a progressive bluegrass band based in the area.  Performing and touring relentlessly with these acts eventually gave Andrew the confidence to step into the limelight with his own songs and unique style, and the Andrew Wakefield solo project was born.  Catch Andrew at Jack of the Wood in downtown Asheville every Sunday 1-3pm with the Bluegrass Brunch Boys! (New York, NY) “I didn’t plan to put out a solo EP,” states Lily Vakili, the poetic and bluesy powerhouse best known for fronting the eponymous Vakili Band. But when the opportunity arose for a string of solo dates supporting John Douglas (of Trashcan Sinatras) this coming October, it “felt both completely new and like a return home.” As preparations for the tour began, new songs started to emerge, and Vakili, who started her musical career as a solo artist, decided to take some of her favorite advice: “Just keep on, keep improving your art, keep performing. Don’t isolate yourself, stay open and say YES.”

Ep 185 Couldn't Be Happiers pt 3

Couldn't Be Happiers return for their 3rd and final episode (for now) and it's probably for the best because it's the episode most likely to get me canceled   Listen and follow Couldn't Be Happiers www.couldntbehappiers.com www.facebook.com/couldntbehappiers www.instagram.com/couldntbehappiers   Thanks to Cormac Russel  for the closing song   https://linktr.ee/cormacrussell https://on.soundcloud.com/wkb1Qt7fwiiaxpW29 https://www.facebook.com/cormacrussellmusic/ https://www.instagram.com/cormacrussellmusic/     Subscribe to the podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wnc-original-music/id1378776313 https://www.iheart.com/podcast/wnc-original-music-31067964/ https://open.spotify.com/show/3Rx8uNDtBXzcrmA6vHiph4   Follow on Social Media https://www.facebook.com/wncoriginalmusic https://www.wncoriginalmusic.com https://www.instagram.com/wnc_original_music/   All music used by permission   The Couldn't Be Happiers are a married, songwriting alt-country/Americana duo from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Jordan Crosby Lee (guitar and vocals) is a born again North Carolinian originally from Texas. His love of Texas music still runs deep, and his conversational songwriting style is redolent of Robert Earl Keen and Bruce Robison.  North Carolina native Jodi Hildebran Lee (drums, harmonica, and vocals) brings a more traditional/bluesy country dressing to their sound. Her voice is bold, brilliant, and hair-raisingly beautiful. Their sound is uniquely their own, but if a comparison must be made, think Violent Femmes meets Johnny & June. They cover everything from their love for each other to the rueful life of a Sasquatch hunter. The lyrics are nuanced, funny, and purposeful.   The duo’s first full-length album, "Songs for Butchie," is out now in three volumes. The album is named in honor of Jordan's late father, John Lee, who passed away on November 3, 2020, from a rare brain cancer.  "Butchie" was undoubtedly the band's biggest fan, and his faith in Jordan and Jodi is what drove them to finally write and release this album.  Melissa Clarke, Ph.D., of Americana Highways called their music on this album “witty and entertaining, even as the lyrics weave in serious topics to consider.”   Canadian born but raised in Ireland, Cormac Russell has taken his music across the globe, including tours in England and China. He released his acclaimed seventh album titled 'Resurrection' last year, which won some very favourable reviews in the press, as well as airplay on national and international radio. He will be releasing his eighth LP titled 'The Water Came Rushing' this October. Playing all the instruments himself, he draws from a wide range of influences; from Neil Young and Bob Dylan, to literary giants like William Butler Yeats and James Joyce.

The band began with just an upright bass, acoustic guitar, and 3 part harmony. They have recently progressed to a 5 piece band featuring keys, electric guitar, fiddle, and drums. The band is led by its two primary songwriters and frontmen, Cory Kinal (acoustic guitar) and Andrew Massey (electric guitar, keys). Their new album “Someone Who Knows” puts on display the same lyrically sensitivity fans have enjoyed from the duo backed by a broader soundscape reminiscent of bands like the Old 97’s, REM, and Wilco.   “Invites—and earns—the Paul Simon comparisons,” raves American Songwriter about Chris Milam, the acclaimed singer-songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee. Milam’s first two albums—Kids These Days and Meanwhile—earned him widespread critical acclaim. Years of dogged, grassroots touring earned him a dedicated fanbase across the US & UK. Collaborations and co-bills with Stax legend William Bell, Valerie June, Amanda Shires, Cory Branan, Garrison Starr, and more earned Milam’s reputation as an ascendent artist to watch. Now, Chris Milam is set to release his third album, Orchid South: a kinetic, slyly subversive rock record inspired by the music and events of his adolescence. These eleven portraits of teenage life draw a direct line from the tumult, thrill, depression, and anger of youth to the chaos of the present.

The Brown Mountain Lightning Bugs officially formed in early 2016, and they’ve been bringing songs of joy, pain, and dogs to audiences ever since. Sensitive and rich harmonies weave through the tapestry of original compositions and carefully curated covers that celebrate the roots of southern American music. The crew enjoy performing as a full toms and mallets groove-infused band while staying true to the core artistry that is the songwriting quartet.    Kurt Fortmeyer was born in a barn and raised in a stable environment, or so he might tell an unwitting listener in one of his sillier moments. Kurt has shared the stage with Grammy-winning songwriters Steve Leslie and R.L. Castleman. and Hall Of Fame songwriters Don Wayne and Jimmy Payne. He has opened shows for many artists including Livingston Taylor, Emmylou Harris, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. As at home in front of a microphone as he is on a front porch, Kurt plays real music, by, for, and about real people.

Annie and Erin recorded their debut album, Bloodroot, in February 2019 in Swannanoa, NC with recording engineer and producer Matt Lohan. Rooster's first release was an eponymous collection of five original songs in 2017. Since then they have performed throughout Western North Carolina, creating both new songs and arrangements of beloved Americana. Annie and Erin thrive on the impact of powerful vocal harmony that blends into lush organic sounds like honey from the hive. In any configuration, the orchestrations are clean and uncluttered, but with a raw, gritty edge. They seem right at home in a wine bar, brew pub, honky-tonk or at a backyard barbecue. Rooster's Bloodroot made it onto WNCW's top 100 albums of 2020.    Kris Hitchcock, the heartland troubadour, journeying from the rugged landscapes of Michigan to the vibrant streets of Nashville and New Orleans before settling in North Carolina. With his band, the SouthEnd Mistakes, Kris weaves tales of love, loss, and life's winding roads through raw, untamed melodies. Bursting onto the scene with five albums, Kris Hitchcock paints a vivid portrait of the rust belt's highs and lows, searching for love and purpose amidst blues-dripped heartland rock anthems. With a new self-produced record on the horizon, Kris and the SouthEnd Mistakes continue to captivate audiences with their high-energy performances and soul-stirring ballads, promising an unforgettable musical journey where every note strikes a chord and every lyric speaks to the heart.

American Songwriter writes that the Asheville, NC based group, “filters 60’s/70’s psychedelia and 90’s alternative rock through a modern lens–as if Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana co-wrote an album produced by Danger Mouse and Dan Auerbach.” The Get Right Band formed in 2011, built around the musical brotherhood that guitarist/singer/songwriter Silas Durocher and bassist Jesse Gentry have formed playing music together since middle school (25 years!). Durocher, who is a trained composer and has been commissioned to write for symphonies and chamber groups, has guitar chops that can soothe or rage, with a charismatic swagger as frontman and singer. Combining elements of indietronica, post-rock, alternative, funk, jazz-fusion and ambient electronica, The Sleeping Cliffs produce emotive, cinematic, instrumental songs. Though not boxed in by any one genre, the songs share an undertow of gritty bass lines, layers of guitar, and big rock drums.

Currently, Stress Dolls takes on several forms live: solo with O'Donnell and her acoustic guitar; as a duo when joined by longtime collaborator Sally Schaefer on violin; or as a band when combined with members TJ Luckman (bass), Jordan Smith (lead guitar), and Josh English (drums). The project's sound has drawn such comparisons as "Joni Mitchell meets Nirvana," "Avril Lavigne and Foo Fighters in a blender," and "Kathleen Hanna fronting Modest Mouse."

Frontman Thelston, voted #1 best guitarist in the same competition, is the creative force, bringing high-energy, funk-infused original rock n’ roll that draws influence from Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, and Queen. In 2019, Thelston’s original music was featured on the hit Netflix show “Lucifer.” Thelston is widely known for his guitar virtuosity and soaring vocals, and leads the 4-piece band with a dynamic stage presence. Bassist Roddy Wilder and drummer Jeff Lott create a rock solid rhythm for Thelston’s guitar and vocals. Singer-songwriter/keyboardist Carrie Morrison fills out the band’s sound with powerhouse vocals and technical prowess   “Guitar-heavy rock that takes in late 1960s psychedelia, blues influenced solos, and occasional nods to acoustic folk, all tied together by Thelston’s earnest, emotional vocals”-Greenville Journal   “In terms of musical ambassadors within the melodic melting pot of a scene that is Western North Carolina, you’d be hard-pressed to find an artist as dedicated and inclusive as that of Andrew Thelston.”- Garret K. Gentry’s virtuosic bass playing “catapults from elastic to nasty” (The Mountain Xpress). Over the years, GRB has defined their sound through constant evolution, building to the hook-driven, synth-heavy pop/rock/psych band they are today. The Huffington Post writes, “their songs are infectious and take you immediately to a place. The lyrics are smart and bear weight.”    “The Get Right Band are the type of performers that you just know will break out. Their songs are infectious and take you immediately to a place. The lyrics are smart and bear weight.” – The Huffington Post   The Get Right Band has shared the stage with Dr. Dog, Everclear, Cracker, UB40, Rusted Root, Smash Mouth, and Lifehouse; been featured on NPR’s World Cafe, Paste Studio, and WTF with Marc Maron; and performed at major venues and festivals including The Fillmore, Brooklyn Bowl, Theatre of the Living Arts, The Orange Peel, FloydFest, Bristol Rhythm & Roots, and Riverbend Fest. They have released four studio albums and a live album, and their latest LP, iTopia, dropped on April 7, 2023.

Born on the cusp of a decade, David C Warren grew up in a house filled with music. There were always records playing and a stash of 45s to plunder. By age thirteen, he bought an electric guitar and amp after a year or so of hopelessly trying to rock out on his dad’s nylon string classical guitar. He started writing his own songs, tentatively at first and then with greater confidence when he started college at FSU and had added new sounds to his sonic palette - REM, The Smiths, Violent Femmes - the music of the time that pricked his ears and powered his first band, Mean Season. A stab at making it as a professional musician in Atlanta didn’t pan out, but coming through that experience, Warren gained a wife (after he moved back to Florida to woo her) and a career. Music took a back seat for a while and those songs he’d crafted so carefully began their long, low simmer. Warren slowly made his way back to music, and the songs on this album. In the time since he picked up a guitar and strummed his first chords, he has spent the years burnishing his musicianship, honing his craft as a songwriter, and learning how to capture musical lightning in a digital bottle. He’s calling the end result “Song of the Sinner,” after a song on the record that introduces listeners to Warren’s own inner struggle that plateaus at hope, rather than victory.

Her voice is simultaneously angelic and rawly human, fiery and red-wine smooth. Her evocative and tender songwriting invites listeners to dive in quickly and deeply, piercing weary hearts and enshrouding them with the fierce love and witnessing they desire and deserve. Her vulnerable, heartfelt lyrics soar through the air on the wings of her transcendent, soulful voice. A mental health professional for over a decade and a half, Ivy has been privy to the sacred inner worlds of thousands of souls (while navigating her own inner hallways, dark attics, and sun-lit living rooms). This rich interpersonal and intrapersonal experience and her curiosity about the internal landscape saturates her songs. She longs for her music to be an oasis of healing and beauty, a call to deeper respect and compassion for ourselves and for humanity, and also just some plain old fun for the ears. As a solo artist, her shows are intimate, playful, and deep. And when accompanied by her band, her songs become even more layered and potent with the backdrop of rich rhythms and moody, electric sounds. Ivy considers her music to be another facet of how she shows up in the world in authentic and passionate service— both as a musician and as a therapist. She hopes her thoughtful, earthy, poetic songs will inspire others to look inside – light, shadows, and all – and come home to their deeply worthy selves.   Counter is an original modern rock band hailing from Western NC featuring driving rhythms, lush vocal harmonies and in-your- face guitars in a sonic mixture of rock, metal, pop and punk.

Born in Asheville, NC, Jesse grew up learning and playing his favorite tunes by classic artists. By the age of 16, he was playing in various local bands. Frizsell has performed at the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam both with his band and more recently as a solo artist. He has opened for acts such as Bret Michaels (of Poison), Blackberry Smoke, Framing Hanley and shared the stage with Kevin Kinney (of Drivin’ N Cryin’) as well as Justin Biltonen (of 3 Doors Down). More recently, Jesse writes songs for the heartbroken, the working man and those ready and willing to unwind after a long day. He participates actively in the local Asheville music scene and regionally in the Southeast. You can find him most weekends playing as a member of The Western Carolina Writers, solo or with his bluegrass trio, Jesse Frizsell and the Riffers. Jesse has released a two song EP, “A Couple of Songs for Drinking”,in 2018, and a full length album “Rose Gold Renegades”, in 2019, both available for streaming or download on all major platforms. His latest endeavor takes a more traditional approach honoring the music of the mountains he grew up in. “Back to Carolina”, his homage to bluegrass will be available everywhere the 1st of October, 2021     Hailing from Philadelphia Jay Regan is the former vocalist and guitarist of the bands April Fool, Dezire and Today We Live. After a hiatus, Jay decided to venture out as a solo artist which cumulated in the release of his first solo album Dreams and Nightmares in 2014. Since then Jay has performed hundreds of shows and has released two more albums, 2017’s Wash Me and 2023’s The Gap Between. Jay’s music is a mix of rock styles and touches on genres such as modern rock, folk rock, alt-country, funk, and R&B.      Singer-songwriter Michael C. Parris is from Millboro, N.C., most famous, perhaps, for where Daner Johnson taught Charlie Poole to play banjo. Michael’s grandfather, Red Parris, used to play with Daner in the late ’30s. Songs by Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Emmylou Harris, John Prine and Waylon Jennings were fixtures in his young life, and you can feel their influence in Michael’s music. Michael grew up in Randolph County, passing the time by hunting rabbit, priming tobacco, working in chicken houses, milking cows, playing basketball, listening to country music and running wild with his cousins. Later, he attended UNC-Greensboro and, in 2002, after joining the Peace Corps, he began writing songs while serving in Jamaica. One fine day in 2021, Michael got his big break when Todd Snider asked him to open for him in Charleston, S.C. Soon after Will Kayuk agreed to fund and produce Michael’s solo project, assembling an amazing group of Nashville musicians known as The 9 Finger Chicken String Band that included Will Kimbrough, Chris Donahue, Benjamin Bynum, Court Clement, Steve Brewster and Andy Leftwich. The album “HoneyBee” blends roots music styles, including country, bluegrass, roots-rock and folk with simple lyrics and beautiful imagery, harkening back to Michael’s Randolph County beginnings.

Couldn't Be Happiers stop by to talk about music and get some very ineffective couples counseling   Listen and follow Couldn't Be Happiers www.couldntbehappiers.com www.facebook.com/couldntbehappiers www.instagram.com/couldntbehappiers   Thanks to The Simple Joy for the closing song   Subscribe to the podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wnc-original-music/id1378776313 https://www.iheart.com/podcast/wnc-original-music-31067964/ This link has all the other places to subscribe https://gopod.me/wncom   Follow on Social Media https://www.facebook.com/wncoriginalmusic https://www.wncoriginalmusic.com https://www.instagram.com/wnc_original_music/   All music used by permission   The Couldn't Be Happiers are a married, songwriting alt-country/Americana duo from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Melissa Clarke, Ph.D., of Americana Highways called their music on this album “witty and entertaining, even as the lyrics weave in serious topics to consider.”   They also just wrapped filming a commercial for a fancy ad agency, but they can’t talk about it until it comes out almost a year from now…but, they are super stoked about it.  They also got a few songs into a sync library in 2022, so they've got their fingers crossed they might show up somewhere on your TV or computer soon...

Through eccentric lyrics and catchy melodies, Katie reveals an inner world that is brutally honest, deeply vulnerable, and highly relatable.  Her appreciation of wide-ranging musical styles comes through in her work, and makes it hard to put a label on her.  If influences were ingredients, they would include: a base of Billie Holiday, a dash of David Byrne, a pinch of Pixies, and a flavor of Feist.  BRAGS: With a degree in creative writing, extensive national touring, and over 20 years of songwriting behind her, Katie is a seasoned performer who knows how to connect with her audience and make them cry, laugh, ponder, and fall silent.  She has performed at iconic venues such as: Club Passim in Boston, MA, Hole in the Wall, Strangebrew and the Driskill Hotel in Austin, TX, and the Threadgill stage at Kerrville Folk Festival. Co-bills include the likes of Heather Maloney, Ley Line, Peter Tork (Of the Monkees) and trading songs around campfires with a then-unknown Adrianne Lenker (Big Thief.) Katie's full catalogue of music (4 albums, from 2012 - 2021) can be downloaded on Bandcamp. Stream music on Spotify and all other online streaming platforms or catch one of her live shows!   Jack Adamant is a Italian singer/songwriter who now lives and records in Stockholm and has just released his sophomore album ”Obscure Places & Cupboards” on AR Recordings. Counting up all of my musical endeavors, I have written, recorded, produced, and released two full-length albums,  two EPs, and 19 singles. The most recent being the “A Brief Cosmic Cinematic Experience” EP, where I wrote each song, played all the instruments, recorded and produced the whole thing; all from my one bedroom apartment’s living room. I’ve played shows all over the state, from Ashe County to Raleigh to Charlotte, fronted my own band and have even been signed by two small labels during this wild ride! Under the heavy influence of the masters such as The Beatles, Elvis , and many more modern artists like–fellow North Carolinian musicians–The Avett Brothers, I have crafted a new but uniquely nostalgic sound, that blends together my surroundings and experiences. My hope is that my music will resonate with people, that when someone listens to one of my little songs that I’ve recorded in my living room, huddled over my guitar and computer, that they feel something, or think about things that maybe they wouldn’t have ordinarily considered. So if you’re feeling like your ears need a good wiggle and your toes need a good tap, look me up, wherever you get your tunes, and maybe you’ll find what you’ve been itching for.     An Original band out of Raleigh, NC, WhoIAre’s style is a blend of Psychedelic, Funk, Soul and Rock. Their latest release, “Paradox”, was mixed and mastered by Dwarf Star Studios (Carrboro)

The songs are steeped in the joys and sorrows of growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, traveling the world to escape them, and eventually landing right back at home to focus on family and community. Squatch is an ever changing, ever growing collective of musicians hand-picked by Masterson throughout his years back home in WNC from the finest players the region has to offer.   Formed in Austin in the spring of 2022, Irondequoit Dodge started when guitarist Eric Legeer and banjo player Rita Bliss swiped right on Vampr. They bonded over their respective home towns near Rochester NY and set out to find a bassist. Jimmie Scott Calhoun responded to their craigslist ad and fit right in. The line-up is made complete by Stephanie Barcelona- vox, Nestor Teran- guitar/keys, Jonathan Harwood- drums, and Sam Barker- bass   Kelsey Montanez is one of Chicago’s best kept secrets. Both intimate and ecstatic, smokey and scorching, her potent blend of blues, pop, and psychedelia has been turning heads for over a decade. Among the singer-songwriter’s many talents, it’s Montanez’s arresting voice that has captured a devoted fanbase. It comes as no surprise that her visceral 2013 EP “A Delightful Sadness” scored her a record contract and music video with Chance the Rapper on lead single “Out of Sight.” True to her strong sense of independence, Montanez subsequently opted to pursue her own uncompromising artistic vision. It took a pandemic worth of isolation and heartbreak to transform that raw power into the refined spectacle that is her first record in over a decade. Bolstered by the pristine production of Bill Karambelas and internationally acclaimed session musicians, her music is both transcendent and catchy, demonstrating the songwriter’s range and ability to transform deeply personal lyrics into searing and seductive rock. While conjuring vocalists like Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill, Montanez possesses her own unmistakable voice. Kelsey Montanez has been listed in the Chicago REDEYE as “15 artists to Watch" and celebrated in the Chicago Reader and Chicago Tribune. Montanez has headlined prominent Chicago venues such as the Metro, House of Blues, as well as festivals such as SXSW. Recently, Montanez was awarded the 2020 Magellan Musician in Residence at the historic Aqua Building.

Carpenter has released two under-the-radar-but-stellar solo albums, Full Flight, in 2011, and Prey Tells, in 2017. Carpenter’s aesthetic lends itself to Big Star’s memorable hooks with the wry, eviscerating wit of Andy Partridge. Catchy, cerebral, and a little pugnacious. The song is about my relationship to my grief losing them so young. It was hard growing up because there was no textbook for how to deal with this specific type of loss. I was put in a lot of general counseling but the only place I saw myself represented were characters like Sabrina, and Harry Potter. That’s why I wanted to write this song and share my story, because if it helps even one person, then it was worth opening up about.   Adrianne Blanks- Songwriter, Vocals @adrianneblanks Matt Blanks- Piano @soaringsoundstudio Dan Hood- Guitar, Pedal Steel @danhoodmusic Taylor West- Bass @_eddtaylor_ Alfred Sergel IV- Drums, Percussion @alfredsergel.4 Gage Owens- Producer, Recording Engineer, Mix Engineer @gage_owens_ Dave McNair- Mastering Engineer Recorded at @siouxsiouxstudio Album Art - Kristen Marie Greene @kristenmariegreene & Nina D’Angier   Find Arianne at the places below for more of her music https://adrianneblanks.bandcamp.com/album/words-are-spells https://music.apple.com/us/artist/adrianne-blanks/1618962451 https://open.spotify.com/artist/4V9OVzZ6IRAgCbeTi6Qsls?si=iCRF1yLESZaNuGFqMs6QHg https://open.spotify.com/album/4TW7bjIGcdIpgUAOjkwluv?si=_XLnXt8rTheOBgZnLeC6sw   www.wncoriginalmusic.com

Long time artists, musicians and singer/songwriters, Peter Frizzante and Abby Amaya, initially met in New York City, but didn't start their indie-rock dreampop shoegaze band together until they moved to  Asheville, North Carolina. Abby’s roots are in California 60s coastal pop, while Peter’s is post-punk, indie-rock. Working together, the now husband and wife team showcase their admiration for sun-soaked sonic landscapes, lo-fi lounge, neo-psychedelia, fuzzy guitars, jazz tones, and melodic pop structures. Reverb soaked and layered with soft whispery vocals, the result is an energetic and memorable reverie. Peter, the morning person, and Abby, the night owl -- their band name is a nod to their opposite sleep schedules. The pair is often writing music or lyrics at home in between work and daily chores, finding inspiration in the human condition and the pain and joy of life.  The band has played with many different local drummers (Jake Cavinder, Matt Hendler, Mike Fasano) and bass players (Marcos Waldheim, Erik Jan, Lowell Hobbs, Matt Tobia, Daniel Hyman). Their first  single, Nocturnal Creatures,  was recorded at El Rancho Morbido Studios with Ryan Slagle (Black Mountain, NC) and debuted in July 2018. This was soon followed by their first full length album, “With Every Breath You Die” in February 2019,  recorded at Standard Electric Studios with Engineer Damon Moon & mastered by Greg Hendler in Atlanta. They went back to the studio in July of 2019 to record a handful of  tracks at Echo Mountain Studios (Asheville, NC). The singles were engineered by  Kenny Harrington, mastered by Jason NeSmith of Chase Park Transduction Studios (Athens, GA) & Geoff Pesche of world renowned Abbey Road Studios (London).   After canceling most shows booked for the last two years, the band has stayed busy indoors with numerous live streams & shooting music videos. They’ve had singles featured on several compilations: Green Witch Records  (NYC), Sunday Records (Chicago), Stereoactive Media (Austin/Brooklyn), Shoegaze  Pilipinas (Philippines), Holy Crap Records (Black Mountain, NC), Editoris (Panama), OIM Records (Oakland, CA), Bummer Recordings (Chattanooga, TN), and Shiny Happy Records (Indonesia).  In 2021, they signed with Lilystars Records (ADA, Warner Music Group), owned by Clementine Castro (Oranges & Lemons, The Camerawalls). The band issued several singles: Rabbit Hole, Separation Anxiety, and a remix of Cabin Fever by indie-electropop legends, Sweet Trip. Their second album, "The Art of Remembering" (mixed & mastered by Chrisanthony Kryptoneum Vinzons), released in February 2022, followed by a bout of live shows. Day & Dream is an official 2022 SXSW artist. Please stay tuned for live show updates.   Canadian born but raised in Ireland, Cormac Russell has taken his music across the globe, including tours in England and China. He released his acclaimed fourth album titled 'Ghost Town' last year, which won some very favorable reviews in the press, as well as airplay on national and international radio. He will be releasing his fifth LP titled 'The Year I Broke The Stars' on October 28th. Playing all the instruments himself, he draws from a wide range of influences; from indie contemporaries like Kurt Vile and Bill Callahan to literary giants like Whitman and Rimbaud.

She is married to Mike, the love of her life, her champion, and best roadie.  (Something I am proud of: When I released "Miles and Miles," I sold out the lounge at Isis and then *almost* sold out the mainstage hall, in advance. That show was one of the best nights of my life. Also, the version of "Highway Song" on that album featured Grammy-winning bass player Eliot Wadopian, who passed away earlier this year. RIP, Eliot. What a sweet man and virtuoso.)   Carrie Marshall - Jazz and Blues Vocalist. Songwriter. Artist. Actress. Storyteller. There are defining moments that shape the unique story of our lives. Tyler is 21 and sitting in a doctor’s office after having noticed that his peripheral vision had been giving him some trouble during a college game of ultimate frisbee. The news comes like a tidal wave when the doctor says, “You’re slowly going blind. You have RP. There’s no known cure.”   But it’s not in Ty’s nature to be held down. So he pivots. He picks up a guitar for the first time and begins playing o bsessively. Then singing. Then writing. He can no longer teach high school math, so he puts together a local blues-rock band in his small North Carolina town and begins playing full-time. Over the next several years, his musical chops get sharper as his vision slowly but surely continues to betray him. “It felt like a race against time.”   That Emma would end up singing for her supper was far less uncertain. She teaches herself how to wail and belt just like all the country greats as a little girl growing up in the heart of Texas. But this is just the beginning. As life goes on, from church choir to classical opera, musicals and fronting an alternative pop-rock band, she sees a lot of different audiences for a lot of different reasons, but one thing remains the same: how much she loves singing for every one of them. “Throughout my lifelong struggle with depression, and for all of life’s celebrations, music is my source of purpose. It’s my calling. It has always been what pulls me and pushes me when nothing else can.”   Fast forward to 2014. Emma meets Tyler for the first time at a “jam session” and they immediately hit it off as friends. She begins opening up for his band at local gigs, meanwhile spending hours offstage with him, writing and bonding over late night milkshakes and rural dive bar booths. Over time this bonding leads to the realization that each makes the other better in life and music. Tyler’s steady, funny and loving personality give Emma the confidence to believe in herself and to continue chasing her passion, while Emma’s spontaneous and sentimental nature provide Tyler with a ceaseless supply of inspiration and motivation. In 2018, under a giant oak tree, they make their union official in a beautiful late summer ceremony.   In January of 2020, six years after they met and hundreds of live shows later, “The Ghosts of Liberty,” their first child, was born. The name hails from a mutual fascination with the paranormal- (Emma believes, Tyler is a skeptic, but alas we digress) as well as a deep love for all things historic- and the abiding belief that all people are deserving of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. ________________________________________ From the heartland of America, Mike Walsh has been playing music in Iowa and the midwest for some time now and has been able to fully craft his music into the soft rock, singer songwriter feel that it is today. Walsh has released three EPs and more than one music video and plans on getting back into the studio to record a full length album.

Over the years Lang’s professional work included teaching in the Japanese school system, managing an English as a Second Language program for immigrants, and providing mental health services at a major university. “All that getting around, including all the difficulties that came with it, helped me understand myself and others better, which has made me a better songwriter than I was in my twenties,” Lang comments. “Mostly, it’s opened my eyes to the resilience people demonstrate in getting through their lives. I want my compassion and respect for that to come through in my songs.” Lang returned to music-making in 2017, releasing his debut album Welcome To Yesterday, which South Carolina Music Writer Kevin Oliver hailed as “evocative storytelling at its finest.”   The Post & Courier Free times included Welcome to Yesterday on its “But What About THIS Album” list in their Best South Carolina Music 2019 edition. “Songs about something that seems like nothing but feels like everything” is how Lang describes She’s My Memory, set for release in June 2022. Exemplifying Lang’s comment “There’s always a story,” the album’s title track tells of a man with Alzheimer’s who glimpses his life through anecdotes of humble but defining marital moments told by his wife. This ten song collection will strike a chord with listeners who endeavor to live with love and purpose in a swirling world of relentless change.   Hello London is the solo project of musician James Froese. Hailing from Buffalo, NY, his sound is influenced by many indie, alternative and punk bands from The Smiths to Mayday Parade. In 2021 he released two EP's, At The End of The World and Stay That Way, and in 2022 Hello London will be releasing their debut LP.

Mrs. Turbyfill's daughter Nicky also makes a notable appearance here.

New Age Americans - These Young Adolescents from the Chicago suburbs formed in middle school when best friends Tyler “T-Hodg” Hodgett and Jake “From NAA” Smith wanted to melt faces. The boys found RJ “Caveman” McGaw as the missing piece to fulfill their live experience. The band had a successful tour of the Midwest performing with various artist such as iHeartRadios rock artist of the year, lovelytheband as well as former members of Lynyrd Skynyrd/Blackfoot with their group named Skinny Molly. After the tours the band took a short hiatus to graduate from college. As the band recharged, they released a series of singles and welcomed the talent of Alexander "Mississippi King" James for guitar and songwriting. The band is currently getting ready to tour again and working on their next studio album that is set to release summer of 2022.

Derek Frye returns to talk about all kinds of things, including religion but not religion   Click here for easy streaming or download -    https://mcdn.podbean.com/mf/web/yf9qcw/Ep_146_Derek_Frye_pt_26x5bv.mp3   Places to listen Apple Podcasts/iTunes   Stitcher   Google Podcasts   iHeart Radio   Spotify  Pandora   Listen to and follow The Derek Frye at these places www.derekfrye.bandcamp.com https://www.instagram.com/disposableoutlaw www.facebook.com/disposableoutlaw   Thanks to Lua Flora for the closing song https://www.luaflora.com/ https://www.instagram.com/luafloramusic/ https://www.facebook.com/luafloramusic https://music.apple.com/us/artist/lua-flora/1524890566     Subscribe to the podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wnc-original-music/id1378776313 https://www.iheart.com/podcast/wnc-original-music-31067964/ https://gopod.me/wncom   Follow on Social Media https://www.facebook.com/wncoriginalmusic https://www.wncoriginalmusic.com https://www.instagram.com/wnc_original_music/   All music used by permission   After 7 years fronting the angsty Asheville rock band The Dirty Badgers, Derek Frye finds himself more eager than ever to showcase those same foreboding sounds through the haunting old time style of his Southern Appalachian ancestry. Born and raised in East Tennessee, Derek is a songwriter with deep rooted ties to the music born in the area. In the hyperbolic style of murder ballads, his songs are historical tales of heartbreak, trouble, strife, and ideas about the true nature of humanity. Derek's performances will take you on a journey through his life and those of his mountain ancestors.   Derek has taken the stage at some of Asheville’s most prominent festivals such as Downtown After 5 and Pridefest and has shared stages with artists like Cracker, Low Cut Connie, and Marcus King.     Lua Flora is the soundtrack of your favorite daydream. The Asheville, NC-based group’s sun-kissed melodies are rooted in the harmonies of Appalachia, rhythms of the West Indies, and lyricism of American folk. Releasing a collection of singles, Lua Flora has collaborated with Sons of Paradise, Richard Vagner, Victor Rice, and Karl Vincent Roth (of Satsang). With stellar reviews from publications such as Face the Current and Top Shelf Music, the outfit has established its unique yet home-like voice.
