282: Bound By Business: Like Mother, Like Son. Debbie Hall and Trent Hall
Today With Debbie Hall and Trent Hall:
Hi! In this episode of Window Treatments for Profit, Jessica Harling is back with the Bound by Business series. This week, Jessica sits down with Debbie and Trent Hall, a mother-son duo from Designer Draperies, a full-service custom window treatment and soft goods design firm. Listen in as Debbie and Trent discuss with Jessica their core values of leading with respect, kindness, and having a two-way street with trust. They even bring Jessica to tears at one point with their sweetness.
More About Debbie Hall and Trent Hall
Nearly thirty years ago, Debbie Hall established Designer Draperies, with a focus on delivering unmatched commitment and fostering enduring client connections. With a diverse background spanning formal textile education, tenure in the garment sector, and extensive experiences across Europe and Asia, she possesses a rich history and deep industry expertise. This wide-ranging journey has enabled Debbie to seamlessly couple her years of experience with profound insights into colors, fabrics, and various materials, culminating in the creation of exceptional, bespoke window treatments, custom bedding, and accessories.
Debbie acquired a business in 2022, Window Alternatives LTD, expanding her reach beyond the residential market and delivering high quality window treatments to commercial businesses. With the creation of this business came new challenges that required Debbie to employ an innovative approach as she continued to explore this new corner of the market.
In early 2022, Trent, Debbie’s middle son, formally joined the business, providing a fresh perspective and helping hand as Debbie continued down the next leg of her journey. Trent graduated from Rutgers-Camden University in 2020 with a degree in marketing. Having grown up in and around the business, Trent brought an intimate knowledge of the business and fresh perspective to bear. Upon graduating college amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Trent has continued to play an integral role in helping to grow and scale the business alongside his mother, Debbie.

More About Melissa Fields
Shades of Gray Design Studio is a boutique interior design studio based in San Antonio, Texas. It was started in 2018 shortly after Melissa Fields, the Founder and CEO, retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service.
A retired Air Force officer turned interior designer, took her side hustle and deep passion for all things beautiful and developed it into a business. Melissa wanted to create amazing spaces for people who were going to stay in their homes long term and enjoy the investment they put into their space.
She shifted her focus towards designing residential spaces. Although not formally trained, she is a passionate creative who not only has an eye for design but firmly believes and understands that the details matter. Melissa also knows the power of beautiful and intentional design to truly transform people on a mind, body, and soul level. Because Melissa is so obsessed with the details and a high level of quality, she wanted to have a solid foundation and obtained a certification in residential interior design through the New York Institute of Art and Design.

269: Bound by Business: Working With the In-Laws
Today With Tina and Ashley Engdahl:
In this week's episode of Window Treatments for Profit, we're excited to introduce a special series called "Bound by Business," focusing on the unique challenges and rewards of family businesses. Hosted by Jessica Harling, who grew up in a family business herself, this episode features Tina and Ashley Engdahl, a mother-daughter duo (almost!) from Apollo Draperies in Cincinnati. These in-laws both joined their husbands in the family business and have a wealth of experience to share. Throughout the episode, Tina and Ashley discuss the importance of defining core values and using the Traction system to keep everyone aligned and accountable. They discuss the challenges of communication in family businesses and share strategies for navigating heated moments with patience and understanding. The conversation also touches on the significance of setting boundaries between work and personal life and the value of continuous learning and improvement. Whether you work with your in-laws or not, this episode is packed with valuable insights for anyone in a family business.
More About Tina and Ashley Engdahl
My career started as a Registered Nurse in 1984 and I quickly realized I was in the wrong profession. I stuck with it until 1987 when an opportunity came up for me to work at my husband's family business, Apollo Draperies, Inc. I jumped at the opportunity and never looked back. I started as a Sales Consultant and learned everything I could about draperies, valances, bedding, pillows, table covers, blinds, shades, and shutters and loved every minute of it.
It was at this same time that we purchased the business from my in-laws. It didn’t take too long before I realized that neither my husband or myself knew not the 1st thing about business. My husband had a degree in Industrial Design and mine was in nursing. He ran the workroom and installations and I did the design and bookkeeping. Somehow we just kept on keeping on until 2009 when I noticed the lead book was getting more and more sparse and we were realistically going out of business. At that time I was looking through a trade magazine and an ad caught my attention and I proceeded to answer it and within minutes my phone was ringing and Steve Bursten of Exciting Windows was on the other end.
He proceeded to ask me all kinds of questions that I could not answer which made me realize we would certainly go out of business unless we learned what business is and how to actually run one. We Joined Exciting Windows and learned everything we could about how to run a business. That’s when I feel I started to actually grow. And I have loved every part (almost) of learning and absorbing all I can to make a difference in our future as business owners and the legacy we were making for our family.
The real pain, struggles, as well as growth didn’t truly start until our middle son and his wife graduated from college and wanted to be a part of the business- 10 years ago! I’d have to say that’s when I began growing up . We all did. “The struggle was real”,2' as some have put it. But like most entrepreneurs, quitting was never an option!
I knew enough to know we needed help and hired a business coach, Jeesic Harling and the 4 of us worked with her for 18 months. We were growing and maturing and eventually hit another plateau at which point I knew enough to know I didn’t know what I didn’t know and hired Madeleine MacRae to get us through another difficult stage. Now we are at a point where we have reached over $1,250,000.00 in revenue and looking forward to scaling to $2 million and then $3 million.
My husband is getting ready to retire and we are working towards the 3rd generation to scale to the next levels.

Today With Robert Ikhtiari
Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit. Our guest today is Robert Ikhtiari, the ingenious mind behind the revolutionary SleepyTime Tracks product line. An industry veteran with over 30 years of hands-on experience, Robert has channeled his expertise into developing a simple yet effective solution for eliminating pesky light gaps around window shades. SleepyTime Tracks provide customizable light-blocking accents that seamlessly integrate with diverse window treatments and aesthetics. In our conversation, Robert offers invaluable insights honed from bringing his innovative creation to market. From the product development journey to managing customer expectations around design desires and functionality needs, he sheds light on the nuances of delivering superior window treatment solutions. With a new patented design on the horizon, Robert exemplifies a commitment to continuous innovation that keeps businesses ahead of the curve.
More About Robert Ikhtiari
I'm Robert Ikhtiari, a true Chicagoan through and through. Born and raised in the heart of Illinois, I've spent all of my 65 years close to home.
My journey into the world of window treatments began in my thirties when I landed a job at a Home Improvement and Decorating Center. It was there that I first encountered window treatments, an interest that would stick with me throughout my entire career.
Over the years, I've worn many hats in the industry – from selling and installing to repairing and eventually venturing into entrepreneurship with my own window treatment business. But the real highlight of my career came when my wife and I developed Sleepy Time Tracks, a revolutionary solution designed to block out pesky light that sneaks in along the sides of window treatments.
Our dedication to providing top-notch products doesn't stop there. We've expanded our offerings to include a range of other products that complement Sleepy Time Tracks, all with the goal of enhancing your sleep experience.
For over six years now, we've been serving customers through our own website as well as popular online platforms like Amazon, Walmart, and Etsy. Along the way, we've encountered our fair share of copycats trying to imitate our success with inferior products. But what truly sets us apart isn't just our superior product – it's the integrity, care, and compassion we pour into everything we do.
At the end of the day, our mission is simple yet profound: to ensure that everyone has access to a good, restful sleep. And knowing that we're contributing to that makes me incredibly proud.
Thanks for joining us on this journey toward better sleep!

261: Vita Vygovska: Production Workroom Vs Concierge Workroom
Today With Vita Vygovska:
Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit! In this episode I’m joined by my good friend, Vita Vygovska, to discuss the differences between a full-service concierge workroom and a production workroom. We also talk about how full-service workrooms can respond when asked why they charge more than production workrooms. Either way, if you are a window treatment professional, you will learn all of the differences between the two types of showrooms. If you own a showroom, then you will learn how to answer that dreaded question.
Pick It Apart
[5:24] Vita explains the differences between a full-service concierge workroom compared to a production/track workroom.
[9:31] The core skills a production workroom has compared to the concierge.
[14:03] What a full-service workroom does during the estimate stage.
[17:41] The process of the expediting stage for a full-service workroom.
[24:58} You are at will to explain to a client why you charge more as a full-service workroom.
LuAnn and Vita Vygovska's Ah-Ha Moments
“A Full-service concierge workroom does everything a production workroom does, except their services extend through the last step of the window treatment.” - Vita Vygovska
“I can say with high confidence that when you work with a full-service workroom, the amount of care, attention, and vested interest in the relationship is a lot higher.” - Vita Vygovska

260: Disruptor Alert: Life Was Never Meant to Be A Struggle - The Role Window Treatments Play in Our Unconscious Minds
Today With Fawn Chang:
Today on Window Treatments for Profit, I am joined by Fawn Chang, a behavioral interior designer, color expert and industry insider. She is sharing how our environments impact our well-being, how window treatments play a crucial role, and how we can position ourselves as consultants for healthier living spaces. Fawn has inspired audiences around the world — teaching how the brain and body interact with our surroundings, and today she is bringing insight on how to create spaces that don't just look beautiful, but actually enhance our health, wealth, and happiness…and how to sell them too.
Pick It Apart
[2:27] Fawn introduces ‘wellness real estate’ and how wellness window treatments can be incorporated.
[13:29] Fawn and LuAnn discuss biophilia, its positive impacts in an environment, and how window treatment professionals can capitalize on this. [19:49] LuAnn asks Fawn how to counsel consumers on circadian rhythms and the ideal room darkening window treatments.
[24:31] Fawn explains how our bodies and subconscious minds are always reading and reacting to our environments, and the implications of the low-level stress they can cause.
[31:02] Fawn and LuAnn discuss body language and best practices when it comes to body language and sales.
[50:59] LuAnn reiterates the tools she and Fawn discussed, and shares how these can make you — the window treatment professional — more valuable to interior designers and worth a higher rate.
LuAnn and Fawn Chang's Ah-Ha Moments
“The outside is always moving in a fashion that is more random than what we see on the our screens, right? That calms the body that puts us into our rest, restore, digest, create, and play mode. We have access to higher order thinking in our brain. We have access to the healing aspects of our body, and then…as long as it's tracking the sunlight, our body’s rhythms can train to where they're meant to be.” - Fawn Chang
“[In interior design] biophilia feels very normal now, but I have never ever thought about how window treatment people should be capitalizing and leveraging it.” - LuAnn Nigara
“Our body and unconscious mind is reading the environment about eight-and-a-half seconds before our thinking mind is aware…Your unconscious reads it, evaluates it, qualifies it.” - Fawn Chang
“Embracing Biophilia design and wellness design and having it as another tool in our toolbox as window treatment professionals — we're going to be more important to interior designers. And…consumers will pay easily up to 20% more for products when wellness design is important to them…when it matters to that person, they will pay more.” - LuAnn Nigara
“We're not trying to manipulate somebody, we're actually trying to create a connection. That's the whole basis of of sales, and all of this — talking about the neuroscience of having someone feel comfortable in their own house so that you can get to the next level of the sales conversation with them. It's looking for a genuine beginning of a relationship.” - LuAnn Nigara
More About Fawn Chang
With over 2500 presentations delivered to audiences internationally, Fawn inspires and shifts perceptions that change lives. She has a remarkable ability to allow her audience to see how the brain/body work and how to make simple changes for better business, better health, wealth, longevity and more profit. Fawn’s passion is people and she knows that life was NEVER meant to be a struggle. Using neuroscience, she shows how the human spirit in each of us is confounded by what is in our environment, which speaks to the unconscious mind creating our behavior. Our true nature begs to be brought forth but is locked within our environments. Fawn delivers easily digestible, practical and easy-to-implement actionable tips and tools, backed by modern science, ready for immediate application enjoyable, approachable and understandable all with delightful humor. Fawn Chang is a Keynote Speaker, International Interior Designer, Color Marketing and Trending Expert and a Feng Shui Expert. More About Katlyn Slocum
I’m Katlyn and I’m passionate about helping professionals in the construction industry scale to new heights!
Growing up, all of the men in my life were tradesmen. My papa opened his own auto shop the year I was born (that’s 28 years ago). My dad and his dad ran their own HVAC business. My stepdad is a very successful and trusted roofer in southern Minnesota. I even married an electrician!
I’ve always admired these guys and have seen firsthand how hard they work every day. But as the internet kept growing, it wasn’t enough to work hard on the job; they had to market their businesses online, too.
Some of my family took on the challenge—like my stepdad who continued to have enormous success in his area after investing in online advertising, a new website, and SEO. Others found it more difficult to adapt—like my grandpa who relied solely on word-of-mouth referrals and later closed his business. I know he isn’t the only talented tradesman who has struggled to keep up with online marketing.
That’s why I decided to intentionally create a business that helps blue-collar business owners—people like my dad, my uncles, my stepdad, and my grandpa—excel online and expand their businesses through website design and marketing.
I know the countless hours you invest to put food on the table and create a brighter future for your family.
And while I can’t do what YOU do, I DO know how to harness the power of the internet to take your business from struggling to thriving.

256: Jessica Harling: Firing a Family Member Part 2: 9 Tips to Make it as Painless as Possible
Today With Jessica Harling:
Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit. We recently welcomed Jessica Harling to the show to discuss what happens when you have to fire a family member or someone near and dear to your heart. In part 1, our conversation centered around the emotional side—how to come to terms with the decision that often feels impossible to make. Today, Jessica’s back with the more practical tips for what to do once you’ve made the decision to keep the process smooth and minimize discomfort for everyone.
Pick It Apart
[2:15] Jessica discusses the three phases of letting someone go—the preparation, the actual conversation, and the aftermath—and why all three matter.
[5:06] Jessica shares her three tips for the first phase—preparing for letting a family member or friend go before you have the conversation.
[13:27] LuAnn and Jessica talk about three ways to make the actual firing conversation as painless as possible.
[27:57] Jessica shares three strategies for handling the aftermath of the firing in the best way for everyone involved.
LuAnn and Jessica Harling's Ah-Ha Moments
“When we’re having these conflicts, both sides are harboring stuff right? The one side feels oppressed—you’re asking too much of me. The other side feels like, you never do half the things we need done. Whatever the obstacle or object of the disagreement is, both people feel like they’re right, and they’re both usually aware of the tension.” -LuAnn
“I’m hearing you say that we need to have the protocol for any person exiting our company established ahead of time. What you’re basically saying is we should all have an off-boarding process documented.” -LuAnn
“It’s best to approach the conversation from a less emotional standpoint, because if it’s all bottled up inside of you, then it could pop in the conversation if you get a little bit of defensiveness. So do yourself a favor and get it out of your system first, before you even schedule the meeting.” -Jessica

6 Critical Considerations When Planning Succession & Executive Retirement In Your Family Business
01:24:1205/02/2024
254: Jessica Harling: Confronting or Firing Family Members in Your Business
Today With Jessica Harling:
Hi, welcome to Window Treatments for Profit. Firing someone is never easy. But when it’s a friend or family member, that situation becomes emotionally charged and even more difficult. It’s never easy. How do you let someone know this is their last chance? How do you set up the expectations that need to be met? How do you decide enough is enough? And how do you have that ultimate hard conversation if you end up having to let them go? Today, Jessica Harling is here to share her insights on how to navigate these tough situations.
Pick It Apart
[2:22] Jessica and LuAnn talk about how sticky situations arrive with family in business and the importance of clear expectations.
[7:24] Jessica shares her advice on making the hard decision to let a family member go.
[12:21] LuAnn and Jessica discuss why you can’t just put off the hard conversations.
[21:51] Jessica and LuAnn reflect on the emotional side and the grief of fallout with family members.
[31:39] LuAnn unpacks why these situations are always going to be hard, even when they’re necessary.
LuAnn and Jessica Harling's Ah-Ha Moments
“I once heard some great advice. When you know you need to fire a family member but you feel like you can’t, fire them in your heart. The biggest reason why you’re having this push and pull with them is because you do love then and you do have this emotional attachment to them. But if you fire them in your heart, it’s a little bit easier for your brain to act on what the heart doesn’t want to do.” -Jessica
“It really is important to ask yourself if it’s a person problem or a process problem. Because if it’s a process problem, we may learn that we’ve got somebody in the wrong seat. That is automatically going to create friction for both of us, and if we're family or friends it’s going to manifest in ways that it wouldn’t just from employer to employee.” -LuAnn
“At the end of the day, if you’re letting someone go that is close to you, there is a grieving process. It is not easy. If it was easy, you’d have a cold heart.” -Jessica

253: Tim Yurek: Three Disturbing Trends That Put Small Businesses at Risk
Today With Tim Yurek:
Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit. Today, we’re talking about what we want from our business in the long-term—and more specifically, what we’re doing, or not doing, that threatens the long-term success and the next generation of our business. Now, I know that when you’re in the weeds with your business, it’s easy to put off that long-term planning. But what if you could make some smart changes today to pave the way for whatever you want for the future of your business outside of yourself? My guest today, Tim Yurek, is a highly accomplished financial consultant. As the founder and CEO of Tier 1 Capital, he has spent over 35 years helping thousands of people across the country achieve their financial goals. Tim is here for part 1 of a valuable conversation around succession planning, retaining key players for the next phase of the business, and protecting your retirement so you can move into that next phase.
Pick It Apart
[4:32] Tim breaks down the three disturbing trends threatening long-term business success (and shares some shocking statistics).
[12:31] Tim and LuAnn discuss the cash flow issues business owners face (and the key to breaking out of them).
[19:41] LuAnn and Tim talk about what it really takes to retain the future leaders of your business.
[32:51] Tim discusses why business owners aren’t planning for retirement or succession and how they can free up the funds needed to do so.
LuAnn and Tim Yurek's Ah-Ha Moments
“It’s not the amount of money that you make—it’s how you’re using your money. We call that the financial golf swing. You could go out and buy the best golf clubs and think you’re going to be the best golfer. News flash—it doesn’t work that way. Or, you can improve your golf game by going down to the practice range and working on your swing.” -Tim
“If I already know who those key employees are, why am I not having those conversations to understand what is important to them to encourage them to stay and take over?” -LuAnn
“We don’t want to be fiscally irresponsible, but it’s fiscally irresponsible actually to not set ourselves up for the exit plan.” -LuAnn
