4.3: How Mentorship Can Fix your Talent Retention Challenge with Sherry Schaefer
It’s every leader’s worst nightmare: the moment when their best talent signs a contract with someone else. Or worse: the competition. Why did they leave? One of two reasons: they hated their boss, or they didn’t see a path forward for professional advancement. Both of these challenges can be addressed by bringing in a solid mentorship program to your organization. If you haven’t figured it out yet, let me spell it out to you. People are your organization’s most valuable asset. If people don’t feel like the organization has your back, they will leave. And the ironic thing is, it wouldn’t have taken much to get them to stay. All they wanted was for someone to invest in them, both financially and professionally. Mentorship is a simple and dynamic way to drive staff retention in your organization. Today on the podcast, my guest and co-coach in Chavender is Sherry Schaefer. Sherry has a wealth of experience and wisdom around the subjects of mentorship and talent development. She builds mentorship programs for organizations and people across many sectors. If you desire a culture of excellence at your organization, but don’t know where to start, this podcast is a great fit for you. Mentorship and succession planning are not a “nice to have” anymore. They are a must-have. Mentorship isn't just a professional nicety; it's a vitally strategic necessity. In this episode you’ll get actionable strategies and insights that will empower you to invest in the success of others. Whether you're a seasoned leader or an aspiring professional, this episode promises to inspire, inform, and elevate your journey. “If you want to build and organization that’s sustainable, that’s going to grow and keep excelling, you’ve got to have a mentorship program” - Sherry Schaefer — Buy the Embracing Ambition Book: https://chavender.com/embracing-ambition-the-book/ Book a discovery call: https://calendly.com/jennychavender/30min?back=1&month=2022-09 Lean into Meaningful Conversations with this complimentary 20 minute video all about the tools and techniques for moving conversations forward: https://youtu.be/zv1N_ZsDEAs Don't miss an episode by joining my Podcast VIP Email List: https://chavender.activehosted.com/f/27 Catch me on email: [email protected] Check out my website: chavender.com Hop on over to Instagram: @jennychavender Let's connect on LinkedIn: Jenny Mitchell, CFRE, CEC, DMA "See" me on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0Q97-c98aPUmfhzlpswfsw

But, she was stopped in her tracks when Jenny called her out of the blue one day to tell her she had an idea, an idea about a Women’s Leadership book. Intellectual legacy are the two words Jenny used that intrigued Carley and ultimately convinced her to come on board and be a part of an upcoming Collaborative Book. As someone who operates her own business, Carley was really curious about how this would all unfold and how she could collect and document her own intellectual legacy. We’re familiar with “listing” our accomplishments or describing things that happened to us, but this story is about honing in on what those moments meant to us, how we learned from them, and how we anchor ourselves differently going forward. 08. Women Playing Big: Interview with Engineer and Philanthropist, Dr. Gina Cody
This episode is special because it touches on a few of my favorite topics: philanthropy, leadership, and powerful women. It is my great pleasure to introduce you to Dr Gina Cody! Gina is a trailblazer in the field of Engineering. She was the first woman to receive a PhD in Engineering from Montreal's Concordia University. In 2018, she made a tremendous gift of $15M to Concordia's Faculty of Engineering, and became the first woman to have a faculty named after her in Canada and internationally. Don't be surprised if you hear an extra voice on this podcast! This episode was first recorded over on the Your Next 50 Podcast with my dear friend Sylvia Otvos. The conversation was so powerful, and frankly relevant for the underdog experience, that I decided to publish it again over here on Underdog Leadership.Gina Cody has left an incredible mark on the world with her presence. I have no doubt that this episode will leave an incredible impression on you. 07. The Confidence Myth
Everyone is always saying that leaders need to “be more confident.” But what if that’s the wrong question to ask? This week, we’re talking about the confidence myth. This episode is a compilation of my experiences stepping into my own confidence and leadership, sprinkled with observations I’ve had coaching hundreds of clients in the senior leadership suite about their relationship with themselves.Society sells us a nasty bill of goods. When I get to ‘X’ I will be ‘Y.’ When I get the title of ‘VP’ I will be ‘Y’ or when I make ‘X’ amount of money then I will be “confident.”We’re left in this constant state of future forwarding what we’re supposed to look like. That success or happiness exist somewhere in the future. The result is that we’re constantly in a state of lack, waiting for something in the future to happen. What if you just said, “it’s starting now.” What if you started acting TODAY like the future leader you were always meant to be? Below are a list of underdog habits. Do you see yourself in this list of activities? Deferring to others Being uncomfortable taking up space Waiting to be asked Talking too much or too little These habits hold us back from expressing our full potential, our full confidence, our full selves. Do you see yourself in this list of behaviours? If this podcast episode resonated with you, consider hopping on a discovery call with me. 06. Women & the Glass Cliff
Have you ever been told by a potential employer ‘you’ll do for now’ or ‘you were the best we could get’ or ‘you don’t quite have the background we were looking for, but we think you’ll be okay’?Well then this episode’s for you. This one goes out to all the women CEO’s out there in not-for-profit roles with leadership experience and who enjoy a challenge. My special guest today, Meghan Rehbein, is all of these things and more. Meghan has 20 years leadership experience in the not-for-profit management space, has raised millions of dollars in her roles as a professional fundraiser, has facilitated strategic initiatives across diverse groups, and is now Interim Dean at Douglass College, Rutgers University. Her PhD research is in the lived experience and leadership identity of women who hold CEO roles in not-for-profit. Could that niche be any more awesome and more on brand with Underdog Leadership?!Listen in to hear about Meghan’s fascinating findings, what a Glass Cliff is and if you’ve ever experienced it.“ I think when you’re used to being in that number 2 role, or you’re used to doing all of the work to make the people around you shine, one of the things that you need to retrain your brain to think about, and I’m working on it, is ‘how do I think about making myself shine?’”- Meghan Rehbein. 05. Asking for Anything
As an Underdog, we have a fear of asking for what we are worth. This can be one of the biggest obstacles for Underdogs, to step out of their comfort zone and ask and invite something into their lives. What if you took action yourself, rather than waiting for someone to do it for you. Asking is about inviting people to go deeper with you. A deeper conversation, a deeper commitment, a deeper desire. I like to use the language “invite more into your life” rather than asking for things. As an example, two years ago, I wasn’t thinking about doing a podcast. But, now that I’m here as I’m expanding, this became the natural next step for Jenny Mitchell.I want to inspire people to choose courage over comfort. It’s easy to get complacent, gets comfortable. We know how to do things at work. We know how our businesses run. We know how we can lead as volunteers. It’s that courageous place of doing something a little bit different. Maybe for some of you, it’s letting go of the control of what you do know, and expanding into something that’s new and exceptional.Shift your thoughts and mindset around the work ‘asking.’ The word ‘asking’ sets up a real problem in the way we talk. The word ‘asking’ implies that someone has to give something up in order to give it to you. Instead of ‘asking,’ let’s offer ‘invitations’. Underdogs overthink. We don’t want to be greedy. We want to earn it with blood, sweat and tears. I am here to tell you that it is okay to ask, to invite. Go for it! Once you ask once, you are hooked! And you will become more and more comfortable. “The invitation vs. the ask. I really believe in the power of language. How can you invite people into something? Invite people into a community? Invite them into a vision for your organization? Rather than asking them for something.”- Jenny Mitchell. 04. Money Mindset
I am OBSESSED with the concept of Money Mindset. What is ‘Money Mindset’? It’s the collection of beliefs that you hold as truths about money. These beliefs subconsciously drive your daily decisions. It all started for me with a kitchen reno, with two small humans under my feet as I washed dishes. There was this cupboard door in an antiquated family kitchen that wouldn’t close properly. That nasty cupboard door was constantly hitting me in the head at the worst moments! For the first time in my life, I REALLY wanted something - a new kitchen - and it was going to cost money. Lots of money. Money is my signature topic. My signature story. And, my signature experience for coaching clients. My personal money mindset has, and continues to inform so much of my experiences as a professional fundraiser and executive coach. In this episode, I share my challenges, my money archetypes and why it all matters within the nuances of underdog leadership, particularly for women. And while you’re listening, would you do me a favour and share your stories with me via email? Together we can start normalizing all the emotions that money brings up for many of us. I am not exaggerating when I say that if you change your relationship with money, the world around you will also change. I wanted that for me, and I want that for you too! “In the past, I have avoided things I was not good at. I knew that in order to get good with money, first, I would have to get bad with money. That was FAR too scary! And so I just ignored money for 20 years. This is NOT a recommended coping strategy, by the way.”- Jenny Mitchell. 03. Underdog Small Shop with Sandra Pedersen
This one goes out for the small fundraising shops out there. Sandra Pedersen tells her journey from a Fortune 500 company sales rep to becoming the only fundraiser in a local women’s shelter. Here’s her underdog story: how she brought her annual dollars raised from $90,000 to $520,000 over three years, how she believes that donors and great stewardship are the keys to sustainable fundraising, and where she is going next. Sandra is a Chavender Small Shop Client Success story. This is an episode to inspire, to remember that the journey is worth it, and that it is always possible to find good people when you need them post. Sandra beautifully articulates the impact of the gift and the importance of focusing on the impact, and not the value of the gift itself. Money allows mission to grow and thrive. “The core of fundraising is your donors, your people. That’s what gets me excited. 02. Underdog Leadership: A Primer
Today, we’re breaking down what underdog leadership is all about. I wanted to talk about this term I will continue to use and what it means to me and how you can leverage this knowledge to notice your own behaviors. I’ve always been a champion of the underdog and the journey from operating as a number two, to becoming a number one in leadership; particularly those people who have had to overcome hardships and barriers. Today we talk about stepping into your power. Underdog leaders are the new models that we need. They experience exclusion and types of discrimination. Dismissal of contribution is being tolerated in the playing field. This episode will help you realize that you can't control the hurdles but what you can do is show up. I’ll be also giving examples of underdog leaders who survived those hurdles. You know what the next step is, I invite you to act on it. “Is it always perfect in our workplaces? No, it's not. But I think as I define underdog leadership, it's about stepping into your confidence and your place of what you do know to provide clarity to the teams around you.” - Jenny Mitchell Learn More About: The Term “Underdog” Patrick Lencioni’s “5 Layers to Teamwork” Styles of Leadership Criteria of an underdog leader Connect with me: Email: [email protected] Website: chavender.com Instagram (Podcast): @underdog.leadership.podcast Instagram (Jenny): @jennychavender Facebook: @ChavenderFundraising YouTube: Underdog Leadership | Podcast by Jenny Mitchell LinkedIn (Podcast): Underdog Leadership Podcast | Hosted by Chavender LinkedIn (Jenny): Jenny Mitchell, CFRE, CEC, DMA Podcast VIP Email List: https://chavender.activehosted.com/f/27
