Stay on the Road, with Florence Reiss Kraut
Florence Reiss Kraut is a native New Yorker, raised and educated in New York City. She holds a BA in English and a Master’s in Social Work and worked for thirty years as a clinician, a family therapist, and CEO of a family service agency while writing stories and essays for publication. Florence has published personal essays for the New York Times and her fiction has appeared in journals such as The Evening Street Press, SNReview, The Westchester Review and others. She joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about her career and latest novel, Street Corner Dreams.
Key Takeaways
Florence Reiss Kraut has always wanted to be a writer, fueled by her childhood experiences listening to natural storytellers in her family of immigrants.
Florence pursued her interest in literature, obtaining a BA in English, and later balancing her writing with a successful career as a clinician, family therapist, and CEO of a family service agency over the course of thirty years.
She dedicated herself to writing and learning through classes, workshops, and writing groups at places like Sarah Lawrence College, with a commitment to never give up on her writing.
The writing process for her first book was extensive; Florence spent nine years developing the manuscript, rewriting it numerous times to perfect the intertwined family saga based on the rich character profiles she had created over years.
Her first book draws heavily from her family background and experiences, incorporating elements that are directly influenced by her large immigrant Jewish family from Brooklyn, New York.
After her retirement from her professional career, she managed to frame her myriad of stories into books, demonstrating that the journey to becoming a published author can be a long and iterative process, contrasting her ten-year endeavor with the quicker year and a half it took to write her second book, Street Corner Dreams.

We All Need Paris, Joan Meyerson
Joan Meyerson is an award-winning writer/director/producer of documentaries and television programs for which she won two Writers Guild of America awards. The dramatic accounts she wrote about vets and military families reconfirmed her belief that the best stories come from real life, a belief she has followed in writing. Having told the stories of others, she now tells one of her own. Her first novel, Who Needs Paris, is inspired by the two times she lived in the city of lights and she joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk all about it.
Key Takeaways
Joan Meyerson's transition from being a secretary to taking on creative roles within the documentary film company where she worked, initially doing tasks she was not hired for, such as writing synopses and proposals for TV series.
Her experience with her second boss at the company, David Wolper—a prominent figure in television who produced the famous series called "Roots"—who encouraged her to write proposals, leading her to become known as the "Princess of writing proposals."
The pivotal moment in her career when she was recognized for her talent and writing skills, which eventually led to her becoming an associate producer after writing a comprehensive outline for the documentary "Big Cats, Little Cats."
The inspiration behind her latest book, "Who Needs Paris?" which was drawn from her experiences living in Paris during the 1960s and the 1970s, as well as her career in producing and writing documentaries.
The structure and thematic elements of her book, which involve a back-and-forth timeline that peels back layers of the main character, Kate's, life as she deals with past experiences and embarks on a journey of personal and professional growth.

Exquisite Loneliness, with Richard Deming
Richard Deming is an award-winning poet and critic, whose work explores the intersections of literature, philosophy, and visual culture. He’s the author of five books, including Day for Night and Art of the Ordinary. Richard teaches at Yale University where he is the Director of Creative Writing and joins me today on Uncorking a Story to discuss his latest book THIS EXQUISITE LONELINESS: What Loners, Outcasts, and the Misunderstood Can Teach Us About Creativity.
Key Themes
Loneliness is a normal human response and not a condition that needs to be fixed; it can also fuel creativity.
It is essential to strike a balance between spending time alone, which is important for self-reflection and creative processes, and seeking social connections for support.
We are inherently born into loneliness, and there is a persistent desire to find a sense of belonging which can be a driving force in our lives and creativity.
Loneliness can be experienced by anyone, even those in long marriages, indicating it's not just about being physically alone.
It's not the mere presence of others that prevents loneliness, but the depth and intimacy of connections with others that alleviate feelings of loneliness.

Releasing the Prisoner, with Justin Woodbury
Justin Woodbury was raised on a small farm out in the country on the west side of Ann Arbor, Michigan. A child survivor of church abuse, Justin began advocating for victims of abuse after he held his son in his arms for the first time and realized the weight of responsibility he would have as a father. Since then, Justin has made it his life's mission to speak out against abuse in all forms and to be a voice for victims, especially those who were abused in a religious setting. He joins me today on Uncorking a Story to talk about his life and new book Sheltered but Not Protected: Learning to Love, Forgive, and Heal After Emotional and Sexual Abuse
Key Highlights
Justin bravely exposes the harrowing depths of his abuse and battle for recovery in his memoir, Sheltered but Not Protected: Learning to Love, Forgive, and Heal After Emotional and Sexual Abuse.
His journey to pen the memoir teeters on the edge of a double-edged sword; potentially re-traumatizing himself or finding catharsis in the laying bare of his past torment.
In a shocking revelation, Justin unveils the scandalous burden of blame thrust upon him as a minor, entangled in a predatory relationship with a woman in her 30s, challenging the skewed perceptions of victimhood.
Justin confronts the toxic stereotypes surrounding male sexual abuse victims with unapologetic candor, shattering the damaging myths of masculinity and advocating for a societal wake-up call.
Amidst the backdrop of a repressive cult-like upbringing, he reveals the staggering cost of his escape – a staggering loss of 75% of his friends – while hailing his wife's unwavering allegiance as his beacon of hope.

Snakes, Society, and Storytelling, with Ginger Pinholster
Ginger Pinholster’s first novel, “City in a Forest,” won a Gold Royal Palm Literary Award from the Florida Writers Association in 2020. She is a volunteer member of Florida’s Volusia Turtle Patrol and resident of Ponce Inlet, near Daytona Beach. She joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about her latest book, Snakes of St. Augustine.
Key Takeaways
Conflict Drives Story: She learned about the importance of conflict in storytelling, realizing that a protagonist must urgently want something and be willing to do anything to get it, which drives the plot and story. This understanding prompted her to restart her writing process, creating a cleaner and easier to follow story.
Don't Give Up: Ginger's advice to aspiring authors is to never give up on their writing journey, emphasizing that it is a long and challenging process that requires perseverance and determination to succeed.
Persistence Pays: Writing is a craft that can be learned and perfected over time, similar to carpentry or playing a musical instrument. Ginger suggests that authors build up their writing skills progressively, starting with smaller pieces such as articles and short stories before tackling larger works.
Importance of Community: Being part of a writing community and having a critique group is invaluable, as it helps authors navigate difficult parts of the writing process and provides constructive feedback, pushing writers to improve and refine their work.
An Inclusive Message: One key inspiration for her latest book, Snakes of St. Augustine, is the exploration of individuals living on the margins of society, exemplified by characters such as Jazz, a neurodivergent and unhoused community college student, who feels invisible and disconnected from the community. The novel delves into themes of compassion toward those marginalized and the value of community, urging readers to consider how everyone is worthy of inclusion and is partially inspired by Ginger’s late brother.

There's Always a Way, with Christina Henry
Christina Henry is a horror and dark fantasy author whose works include Horseman, Near the Bone, The Ghost Tree, Looking Glass, The Girl in Red, The Mermaid, Lost Boy, Alice, Red Queen, and the seven-book urban fantasy Black Wings series. She joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about her latest novel, Good Girls Don’t Die.
Key Takeaways
Be the exception. Christina didn’t have an agent representing her when she landed a three book turned six book deal with a publisher. Sometimes you can be the exception to the rule.
Discover as you go. While some writers have a lot of success outlining their stories, Christina chooses to see where her stories take her. This leads to her feeling surprised at her own stories and hopefully translates to readers absorbing the author’s sense of excitement and wonder as they turn each page.
The Story may present Itself. We like to think that we are in control of our stories and often sit down with a specific intent as we begin to write only to find that a different story emerges. That’s okay—follow your curiosity and not your intention.
Write for you. Christina breaks another rule in that she doesn’t think of “the market” when she writes her stories—she thinks about herself as the target. While many “experts” will tell you this is a recipe for disaster, Christina’s success suggests otherwise.

Into the Groove, with Zaida Alfaro
Sometimes I interview someone and we just don’t click. There are those interviews where we just fail to find a groove and I think to myself, that could have been better. I am happy to report that today’s interview is not one of those! Maybe it’s because I’ve interviewed Zaida before, maybe its because we are both natives of South Florida, or maybe it’s because we both share an appreciation for Rob Thomas and 90s rock, but this conversation with Zaida Alfaro was a blast from the get go.
Meet Zaida Alfaro
Zaida was born into art. Her mother is an amazing artist, composer, and musician who taught Zaida how to play the piano when she was 12 years old. She has taken the storytelling approach of her songwriting to pen two novels, the most recent being In the Key of Dead.
Key Themes
Zaida's upbringing in an artistic family heavily influenced her passion for storytelling and music. Her mother, an artist, composer, and musician, taught her to play the piano at a young age, shaping her creative journey.
Zaida's advice to her younger self would be to not be too hard on herself. Self-acceptance and letting things unfold naturally are important lessons she has learned throughout her career.
Zaida's novels, "The Last Note" and "In the Key of Dead," showcase her storytelling approach, combining her songwriting skills with long-term fiction writing. These books delve into the music industry, cozy murder mysteries, and personal struggles.
Miami serves as a significant source of inspiration for Zaida, and she loves writing about the city and its diverse personalities. Her novels provide readers with a vivid sense of being in Miami and offer glimpses into her Latin culture and family.
Zaida encourages embracing creativity in various forms, not just limited to traditional artistic expressions. She believes creativity is a way of thinking, problem-solving, and expressing oneself, urging others to explore their creative potential.

Unleashing the Muse, with Lauren, J.A. Bear
When I was a kid, my brother Jimmy and I would watch the original Clash of the Titans over and over and over. It had everything a young boy would love; heroes, Gods, magical weapons, and a young Maggie Smith. When offered the chance to interview the author of a book entitled Medusa’s sisters, not even Perseus himself could stop me!
Meet Lauren J.A. Bear
After studying English at UCLA and Education at LMU, Lauren taught middle-school Humanities for over a decade – and survived! She is a teaching fellow for the Holocaust Center for Humanity, and joined me today to talk about her debut novel Medusa’s Sisters.
Key Themes
The importance of belief and persistence: One of the main lessons highlighted in the episode is the significance of believing in oneself as a writer and persisting through challenges. Lauren emphasizes that the only difference between an amateur and a professional writer is the ability to keep going.
Overcoming imposter syndrome: Imposter syndrome, a feeling of inadequacy or self-doubt, is a common struggle for many writers. Lauren discusses the need to watch out for imposter syndrome and offers insights on embracing authenticity and self-love to combat it.
The power of starting and doing the work: Lauren emphasizes that the act of starting to write and consistently putting in the work is the first step towards becoming a writer. It is highlighted that regardless of whether others find value in your writing, the process of doing the reps and honing your craft is crucial.
Craft and precision in writing: The episode explores the importance of craft and precision in writing, drawing attention to the meticulousness of poets and the need for clarity in fantasy writing. Aspiring writers can learn from the idea of carefully choosing each word and tightening their writing to create impactful and engaging prose.
Learning from rejection and perseverance: Lauren shares her experience of receiving numerous rejections for her first manuscript before finding success with her second. This highlights the importance of perseverance and learning from rejection as a writer. Aspiring writers can take away the lesson that rejection is a part of the journey and that they must keep going despite setbacks.

Why Not? With Mark Schiff
This episode is the result of mistaken identity. Somehow I got it in my head that comedian Mark Schiff was in the room next to my brother’s at Memorial Sloan Kettering, a specialty hospital in New York City treating cancer. Not only does Mark live in LA and not New York, but he doesn’t have cancer—which would make a short-term residency at MSK odd to say the least. When I saw that Mark appeared on another podcast to promote a book, it triggered a (false) memory so I emailed him a sob story and invited him on the show. Unleashing the Writer Within, with Chris Ehrlich
I’ve long believed that curiosity is one of the most powerful superpowers that authors wield. Thinking it through more, curiosity may help us craft interesting plots, but its nothing without relatability. If our storylines are not relatable to readers, all of the curiosity in the world is useless. That’s one of the lessons I learned from today’s guest, Chris Ehrlich.
Meet Chris Ehrlich
Chris is an author, entrepreneur, husband, dad of 3, and tennis hacker. He holds a degree in English and political science from Denison University and joined me on Uncorking a Story to discuss first book, Parts of a Life: 40 Stories on Youth to Adulthood.
Key Takeaways
Relatability: Chris emphasizes the importance of making stories relatable to a wide audience. By avoiding a first-person perspective and focusing on universal experiences like school, family, and relationships, he aims to create stories that anyone can connect with.
Narrowing Down Topics: When discussing his book, Chris faced the challenge of narrowing down the topics he wanted to cover. He wanted to explore various subjects but decided to focus on one topic per chapter to ensure a diverse range of stories and subjects.
Positive Feedback: Chris expresses gratitude for the positive feedback he received from readers and acquaintances. The support and favorable reactions to his book have been gratifying and encouraging for him as a writer.
Discovering Writing Style: Through the process of writing his first book, Chris discovered his unique style of poetic short stories. He encourages aspiring writers to experiment with different writing styles and find their voice early on to pave the way for future literary success.
Reflection and Enjoyment: Writing his book allowed Chris to reflect on his life experiences and appreciate them in a bigger sense. He found pleasure in reliving those moments and realized the significance of events that he may have initially downplayed.

From the Stage to the Page, with Stephanie Cowell
Writing is a dynamic and ever-evolving process. By embracing change and finding inspiration in unexpected places, you can breathe new life into your writing. Just ask Stephanie Cowell, whose latest book, A Boy in the Rain, was started over forty years ago. It was only recently that Stephanie felt as if she could finish it, which just goes to show that all of the book we have within us will come out on their time, not necessarily our time.
Meet Stephanie Cowell
Stephanie has been an opera singer, balladeer, and founder of Strawberry Opera and other arts venues, including a Renaissance festival and an outdoor arts series in New York City. She is the author of Nicholas Cooke, The Physician of London, The Players: A Novel of the Young Shakespeare, Marrying Mozart, and Claude & Camille: A Novel of Monet. Her work had been translated into nine languages and adapted into an opera. Stephanie is also the recipient of an American Book Award. She joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about her career and latest book, The Boy in the Rain.
5 Key Takeaways
Stay Open to Pivoting: Just like Stephanie experienced, be open to changing your plans and embracing unexpected turns in your writing. Allow your characters and story to guide you, even if it means deviating from your original outline. By remaining flexible, you may discover new and exciting directions for your narrative that you hadn't considered before.
Revisit Old Works: Stephanie’s latest book is something she started forty years ago. Spend some time to dust off those forgotten manuscripts and breathe new life into them. With fresh perspectives and experiences, you might find that these older works can be transformed into something extraordinary.
Seek Feedback and Immediate Reactions: Unlike performing on stage, writing often lacks immediate feedback. However, it's crucial to seek feedback from trusted sources to gauge the impact of your work. Join writing groups, share your drafts with beta readers, or participate in workshops to receive constructive criticism. These insights will help you refine your writing and understand how your stories resonate with others.
Embrace the Delayed Reactions: While immediate reactions are gratifying, writing offers a unique experience of delayed reactions. Embrace the anticipation and uncertainty that comes with waiting for readers' responses. Remember that the impact of your words can unfold over time, and the delayed reactions can be just as rewarding as immediate ones.
Embrace Change in Life: Writing is deeply intertwined with life experiences. Embrace the changes and challenges that come your way, as they can fuel your creativity and enrich your storytelling. Allow personal growth, relationships, and unexpected events to shape your writing journey. Embracing change in life will bring depth and authenticity to your stories.

Doing It, with Peter Maeck
Today’s guest, Peter Maeck, inspired me with his words of advice for his younger self—”If you have an impulse and are young enough to start at an entry level, do it! Don’t worry about the risks and the outcomes.” These were words that I wish I heard in my late teens and early twenties as acting on them might have helped me get off my butt and explore my authentic self instead of making decisions that pleased other people, but left me wanting more. Still, it’s never too late to find yourself and try new things so, if writing is your thing, listen up because Peter has more wisdom to share.

Living Authentically, with Melissa Giberson
Sometimes it takes a while to find out who we truly are, particularly if we didn’t give ourselves the time to explore life prior to settling down and starting a family. Those of us who did that young may find that, after our kids have grown, we really don’t know who we are. Today’s guest, Melissa Giberson, discusses her experiences coming out as a lesbian well into her 40s after being married and raising her children. I found myself captivated and moved by her story, especially how she describes her ex husband’s reaction to her big news. But that is her story to share.

Melissa is an author and occupational therapist. As a storyteller, she captures moments by taking pictures and writing. Her essays have appeared online and in print in numerous publications, and she received an Honorable Mention in the Memoirs/Personal Essays category of the 91st Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition. She joined me on Uncorking a Story to discuss her memoir, Late Bloomer: Finding My Authentic Self at Midlife

4. The importance of family bonds: Melissa's strong relationship with her children and their father showcases the significance of open communication, acceptance, and support within a family. Listeners will be inspired to nurture and strengthen their own family connections.
5. Embracing personal growth at any age: Melissa's journey of self-discovery began later in life, proving that it's never too late to embark on a path of personal growth and reflection. The Hard Grind, with Karen McManus
Elevator pitches are critically important when selling your book. Ideally, you’d answer the question, “So, what’s your book about?” with a one sentence description that gets the agent/publisher/reader interested in knowing more. Today’s guest, Karen McManus, used “It’s like the breakfast club, but with murder,” as her elevator pitch for One of Us is Lying and that’s when I knew I had to have her on the show.
Meet Karen McManus
Karen M. McManus is a #1 New York Times and international bestselling author of young adult thrillers. Her books include the One of Us Is Lying series, which has been turned into a television show on Peacock, as well as the standalone novels Two Can Keep a Secret, The Cousins, You’ll Be the Death of Me, and Nothing More to Tell. Karen's critically acclaimed, award-winning work has been translated into more than forty-two languages. She joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about her career and latest book, One of us is Back.
