What to do when you’re feeling stuck about money | Money Hotline #14

☎️ In today’s episode, I answer a question I received on Vestpod’s Instagram: What can you do when you’re feeling stuck about money?💸 While I would always advise you to find some form of professional help, here are some pointers you can try:1️⃣ Find a support system, whether just one other person or an entire group. A great place to start could be to talk to a financial professional. 2️⃣ Take control back by setting aside a specific time to know your numbers and check where is your money going. 3️⃣ Creating a budget means tracking and being more mindful about your spending. How to start and raise funding for a truly disruptive business, with Farah Kabir

How to start and raise funding for a truly disruptive business, with Farah Kabir

In 2017, Farah Kabir launched HANX, the sexual wellness brand with women in mind with her childhood friend Sarah. HANX sells a range of products, from their award-winning ultra-thin, vegan, biodegradable condoms to oestrogen-free hormonal contraception. Now stocked online and in Boots, Sainsbury's and other major UK retailers, they are genuinely disrupting the feminine care industry.⚡Farah is passionate about creating a platform that empowers women to take control of their sexual wellness and pleasure without shame or embarrassment. Before HANX, Farah spent six years working at Goldman Sachs. In this episode, we talk about leaving a secure banking job to launch HANX; the realities of raising money; tips for negotiating with big clients; and the ongoing balancing act of being a founder:1/ Communication is key while doing investment raises. When you’re open with your team about it, they remind you why you're doing what you're doing and are also there to support you. 2/ Retail sales is quite similar to investment raising: you can't just turn up when you need funds. You need to nurture that relationship with buyers. You’ve got to build that rapport and keep that going. 3/ For anyone that asks about jumping ship from their job and starting their own business, I always say it needs to be a calculated risk. You need to have a buffer for the rainy day when you might be financially strapped. You can follow and connect with Farah at:https://www.hanxofficial.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/farahkabir001/ Instagram @hanxofficialOur podcast sponsor Moneybox is an award winning app helping people reach their goals and build wealth with confidence. How to build a strong sense of financial wellbeing, with Clare Seal

How to build a strong sense of financial wellbeing, with Clare Seal

🔮 When Clare Seal faced a difficult financial situation in 2019, she turned to Instagram to make herself accountable, posting anonymously as @myfrugalyear. In under a year, she had grown a following and went on to start The Financial Wellbeing Forum. Clare is also Glamour’s Money Matters columnist and the author of three books.💥 Today on The Wallet: 1️⃣ It’s essential when you embark on a journey to improve your financial wellbeing, you are not wasting your energy or beating yourself up about the things where you don't have any control. Try to instead focus on what you can do and take small steps forward. 2️⃣ It’s easy to try and overcome financial baggage in quite a superficial way but it’s paramount to unpack why you’ve been doing the things you’ve been doing in the first place. It’s about understanding your behaviour to move forward and learning to forgive yourself and trust yourself again.3️⃣ You can earn as much as you want, but if your spending is out of control and you don't know what your money's going to, it's really difficult to find any sense of financial wellbeing. Overspending can be a self-soothing technique. The biggest thing is identifying emotional triggers and finding alternative ways to assuage them. You can follow and connect with Clare at:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/myfrugalyear The Wallet: How Am I Repaying My £27k Credit Card Debt?Resources featuring more advice from Clare:‘I've knocked £10k off my debts in a year - and these are the money-saving hacks I swear by.’ Why taking care of your finances is not a passive actThe Real Life Money Journal: A practical guide to help you understand your relationship with money and take control of your finances Pre-order her new book - Five Steps to Financial WellbeingOur podcast partners PensionBee are also offering you a £25 pension contribution (£20, plus £5 in tax relief) when you sign up. IWD2022: #BreakTheBias around Women Investors, with Tamara Gillan | Hotline #12

IWD2022: #BreakTheBias around Women Investors, with Tamara Gillan | Hotline #12

☎️ Tamara Gillan is a successful entrepreneur, founder and CEO of The WealthiHer Network. Her mission is to bring together the UK’s leading financial institutions to work in partnership for the first time to celebrate and support female wealth. As a single mother, Tamara has had to fight for her own success and passionately believes women deserve to be recognised and championed by the financial sector.💸 In this episode, we’re keen to #BreakTheBias around women and investing for IWD. We’ve had enough listening to the messages that women aren’t interested, have a lower tolerance for risk, or don’t care about growing their wealth. The truth is that women are great investors, so how do we break the bias by inspiring women to grow and protect their wealth?💥 Today on The Wallet: 1️⃣ 72% of women do not think that the finance industry is talking to them or catering to their needs. There are still inherent biases in the process.2️⃣ When women can ask any question and share experiences with other women, it changes their overall engagement with investing. It changes their propensity to invest in something with a slightly higher risk profile. 3️⃣ When we ask for a pay increase or pitch our business, we often negotiate against ourselves. When you go into that situation, make sure you sit and look them in the eye and believe you are worth it. As women, we need to remember our own worth. You can follow and connect with Tamara at:https://www.wealthihernetwork.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tamaragillan Twitter @WealthiHerNetworkInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tamtamgillan/?hl=enFive Things You Need to Know About Tamara GillanOur podcast partners PensionBee are also offering you a £25 pension contribution (£20, plus £5 in tax relief) when you sign up. How to untangle money issues and mental health, with Clare Francis | Money Hotline #11

TW: This episode contains references to suicide. Please listen with care.💸 Clare lost her husband to suicide in 2011 and has since been committed to raising awareness and understanding of mental health issues. The pandemic saw a growing number of people pushed into debt, with 2.5 million people estimated to have considered suicide as a result. Clare talks about how there is always help available, no matter how bad things seem.💥 Today on The Wallet: 1️⃣ When you’re in a financial crisis and seeking help, the first conversation (where you open up about the reality of the situation) can be the hardest. 2️⃣ You do not need to struggle on your own behind closed doors. There's help available to help you through a financial crisis, including charities, helplines, and medical assistance.3️⃣ Even if you are not struggling right now, it’s possible that someone you know could be. It’s crucial to look out for warning signs, normalise conversations around the link between financial and mental wellbeing, and check in when a friend, family member or colleague seems unusually withdrawn.Connect with Clare:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/clareefrancis Twitter: @clareefrancisStaying Resilient Through Life Changes, With Clare FrancisResources:StepChange: https://www.stepchange.org/Citizens Advice: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ Mind: https://www.mind.org.uk/Samaritans: https://www.samaritans.org/ Barclays Money Problems: https://www.barclays.co.uk/money-management/managing-money-problems/Our podcast partners PensionBee are also offering you a £25 pension contribution (£20, plus £5 in tax relief) when you sign up. Who should pick up the bill on Valentine's Day? | Bonus Money Hotline Episode

❤️ Today is a special Valentine’s Day episode, where we tackle the sticky question of who should pick up the bill on a date, as well as the wider topic of money and relationships. I invited money guru, journalist and bestselling author Laura Whateley to offer us her thoughts on the subject.💸 Money can’t buy you love, but it sure can show up in your relationship in unexpected ways. Lauren shares 3 tips to help you navigate the much debated conundrum of who pays, why and how much. Today on The Wallet: 1/ We are often fed gendered ideas from a young age of what love and romance “should” look like, so Laura invites us to explore this and consider what your partner’s point of view might be like.2/ Talking about money to your partner may feel like the least romantic thing you could do, but Laura suggests that you should explore how you can reframe this, make the chat light and see it as an opportunity to bond. 3/ Bill-splitting beyond the first date has practical implications, so Laura tells us what to watch out for before you jump into sharing financial commitments.  You can follow and connect with Laura:Twitter @LWhateley Instagram @laurawhateleyPre-order Laura’s book: Yours or Mine? I’m Emilie Bellet, the founder of Vestpod - a thriving community that financially empowers women, author of You’re Not Broke, You’re Pre-Rich and host of The Wallet! How can I teach my children about money? | Money Hotline #9

☎️ Today, we answer a question from our listener Alexandra, who asks us about teaching children about money. I invited Helen Driver, Director of Collaboration at MyBnk charity, ex-fund manager and long-time Vestpod, to offer us her words of wisdom on the topic. 💸 Money can feel like a taboo in a lot of households, but it’s important to broach the topic to help children feel financially confident in their futures. Helen shares 3 tips to help children develop better money habits, from making the right choices in the day to day to managing pocket money.Today on The Wallet: 1/ It all starts with simply integrating money into daily conversations with your kids, so Helen gives examples of how we can do that without making the subject too weighty.2/ Pocket money is a powerful tool for learning about money, and Helen talks about why it’s important to let kids simply experience the process of spending and saving (and make mistakes along the way!). 3/ Children learn by watching and listening to the behaviours that they see around them, and Helen explains what this means for parents and their own attitudes to money. You can follow and connect with Helen:LinkedIn: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/helen-driver-5725b550 MyBnk: https://www.mybnk.org/ Resources mentioned in the episode:Money Twist – KS1: https://www.mybnk.org/our-work/financial-education/money-twist-ks1/ Our podcast partners PensionBee are also offering you a £25 pension contribution (£20, plus £5 in tax relief) when you sign up. How Can I Curb Emotional Spending? | Money Hotline #8

In today’s episode, we talk about emotional spending. With January sales in full swing, temptation to splurge is everywhere. Do I need a will? | #Money Hotline 2

Welcome back to The Hotline! Today we answer a question from Nicole. She is 35 years old and bought her first home a couple of years ago with her partner. Nicole asks us how to start when it comes to making a will. The number 35-54 year-olds with a will has decreased from 37% in 2019 to 22.5% in 2021 – a decline of 39%. This means that fewer people are leaving instructions for their loved ones when they pass away. This week, we’re going to talk about who needs to have a will, and what the process entails. Today on The Wallet: 1/ We’re joined by Kate Pentelow, founder of The Money Mummy, a friend of Vestpod and former financial advisor. Together, we open up the conversation around making a will. We know it can feel uncomfortable and emotional to do, so Kate tells us how we can best prepare for the process. 2/ We discuss when the right time to make a will is, the different options available, and take a look at why, especially as women, it’s so important to be pragmatic and prepared if the worst were to happen. 3/ We also have an inspirational proud money moment to share and a recommended episode from the Vestpod community.Resources:Money Helper: https://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/family-and-care/death-and-bereavement/planning-what-to-leave-in-your-will The Law Society https://www.lawsociety.org.uk/enProbate Services: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/store-a-will-with-the-probate-serviceConnect with Kate:- Instagram: @The_Money_MummyOur podcast partners PensionBee are also offering you a £25 pension contribution (£20, plus £5 in tax relief) when you sign up. Boosting Our Pensions

Boosting Our Pensions

This episode is a recording of our pensions event on June 30th, 2021 organised with our sponsor PensionBee. You can read the summary of the event and see the slides supporting our conversation on vestpod.com.Research shows that women’s pensions hold around 40% less than those belonging to men, with this pension gap only increasing with age. (Pension Bee, 2021) With the gender and ethnicity pay gaps impacting women’s ability to save more into their pensions, how can we bridge this gap and ensure we’re saving for our future selves and a happy retirement? To tackle this subject, I am joined by 4 brilliant guests who will take us through the foundations of what a pension is, their tips and guidance on investing with impact and their personal stories of starting and saving for retirement. Today on The Wallet: 1/ People tend to save more when they can see themselves at retirement age, so we meet our future selves and learn about their lives, which helps us prioritise our future needs over opting for instant gratification. 2/ We’ll discuss how to calculate your pension pot goals, how to get clear on where your money is invested, and how to move it if it isn’t aligning with your values. 3/ We know the pension gap is a challenge affecting women in retirement, so we look at practical and hands-on ways to boost our pension savings. My guests today are: Emma Maslin: Financial coach, therapist and founder of The Money Whisperer (@MoneyWhisperer_). What long term impact will the pandemic have on our finances, with Emma Maslin

Emma Maslin is a money coach and mentor who helps people understand their emotional connection with money to help build positive habits and a healthy money mindset. Emma is a passionate believer that financial health and well-being is not a luxury just for the wealthy: it is a basic need for all. Emma’s speciality is to equip people with both the right money mindset and the practical guidance and tools to achieve financial freedom. In today’s episode of The Wallet:1) Emma shares how emotional spending might work as we return to the high street, and how we can recognise our triggers and take a pause before making impulsive decisions. 2) I was also curious to find out what Emma thinks about the ‘collective global trauma’ (as reported by behavioural finance expert Neil Bage in an article published last month) that we’ve experienced in the last 12 months of the pandemic, and how this trauma will impact our financial decisions and attitude to risk. 3) Since investing has become more mainstream and trendy during the pandemic, Emma also offers tips to new investors to help them understand their emotions around investing and how to build a long-term investment strategy. You can follow and connect with Emma at: The Money Whisperer: www.themoneywhisperer.co.ukTwitter: @MoneyWhisperer_ We shared some resources in this episode. How to define wealth on your own terms, with Davinia Tomlinson

We all have our own definitions of what it means to be “wealthy”. For you, wealth might be purely financial, but it could also be having time with your friends and family, experiences and trips, or the freedom to live life on your own terms. My guest today is Davinia Tomlinson, who discovered that her definition of wealth extends beyond finances and has since been inspired to follow her own path. Davinia founded RainChq in 2018, to help women take control of their financial futures, build long term sustainable wealth and live with intention. As Davinia explains, we can easily move through life from one goal to another without stopping to think about what we truly want. So in this episode, we discuss how to identify desires that might be outside societal expectations, how we can reclaim our financial power, even in a pandemic, and how our differences in thinking and life experiences can be our biggest asset.
