Charlie retired from NASA in 2019. I was approached for a big role recently. The kind of role that would be higher profile than I’d ever had before, more responsibility than I’d ever had before, higher pay than I’d ever had before. It was seductive. Shiny things are seductive.But in the back of my mind I also knew that it would represent a step back, from the life I’ve built today around the things that really are my purpose in life, to a past life that was more disruptive, higher stress and higher risk of burnout. In reality I know that material wealth does not and should not trump emotional health. It’s the foundation of human, humble, vulnerable leadership. Nevertheless, the magpie part of my brain was still going, “ooh, follow the shiny thing.”For many people I’ve worked with, their Unlock Moment has been when they’ve figured out that the shiny thing was actually not so shiny. The glare is blinding them to what really matters. Their talent. Their passion. Their strength. Their purpose.Material wealth does not, and should not trump emotional health. We took our dogs swimming last week. They’re both Pomeranians – not much dog but a lot of fluff. And they both have a bit of an aversion to water. One hates it on her feet, so the merest contact with a puddle and she’s frantically wiping herself on the curtains to get dry. The other hates to drink it, so will go for hours avoiding hydration until she’s virtually a dry cracker and then inhales half a bowl of water when she finally realises it’s the source of life.So we really didn’t know how they’d take to water but we went to a local doggy spa where they have a dog hydrotherapy pool. And they were wearing their lifejackets with handles that we bought to go on a boat trip last year.Often people stand in the way of their Unlock Moments. They can’t see the route to fresh thinking. They don’t believe they can do a thing they’ve never done before. Recently our two little dogs Mochi and Beansprout have been burning the candle at both ends. No matter how late at night I take them out for their last bathroom visit, they still wake me up between 5:45 and 6:15 in the morning for another trip. It’s left me feeling oddly disconnected when I start my work for the day, almost as though my brain is struggling to get into gear.I’ve had many times in my career where pressure of work has caused me to compromise on sleep. Then one of my coachees introduced me to the idea of time budgeting. She allocates her time through the week to all the activities she needs to do, including sleeping and self-care, and she leaves some in reserve for those unexpected things that always crop up. If you’ve ever experienced the so-called fight or flight response, you’ll know about the rush of adrenaline you get when something triggers your sense of fear. Your heart beats faster. Your blood pressure goes up. Your breathing gets more rapid. Why? Because the adrenalin that your body produces interacts with receptors on cells around the body. Like a key in a lock, the adrenalin binds and triggers a response in those cells which leads to all those fight or flight symptoms you experience.And equally you can block those receptors. Ever heard of beta blockers or anti-histamines? Well they’re blocking those same receptors to dampen down the body’s natural response.The thing is, we didn’t always know how it was that cells knew about the world around them. It was Dr Robert Lefkowitz and his team that first isolated and studied cell receptors, and later discovered their protein structure. Today between 30 and 50% of all the prescription drugs in the world act by activating or inhibiting the receptors of the type that Dr Lefkowitz and his team isolated and characterised.For this discovery, he has received more than 70 awards and in 2012 he and his former trainee Dr Brian Kobilka were together awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.Dr Robert is the Chancellor’s Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Professor of Biochemistry at Duke University in North Carolina, where he’s been an investigator since the mid-1970s.He’s led an extraordinary life and I know he’s a master storyteller.
