Healing from Within: The Basics of Internal Family Systems with Dr. Richard C. Schwartz and Moshe Norman, LCSW
This is quite a unique episode. It’s about an hour-long conversation that Dr. Richard Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems, had with a group of mental health clinicians. He’s sharing his IFS model and taking questions from the group. The group is Mondays with Moshe and you’ll hear from its creator, Moshe Norman, in just a few minutes. But I wanted to tell you a few things about the episode before you get to the main content. This is a recording of a live conversation. The audio at times isn’t the best. However, it’s clear enough that you should be able to make out what is being said and asked. Dr Scwartz’s audio is great but some of the audio from the group is a little fuzzy or just not so clear. The group is composed of mental health clinicians who are mainly Jewish so you may hear some phrases or words that you aren’t familiar with however the content shared is definitely clinical and not from a religious perspective. If you’re unsure of what something means or you’re curious to learn more, feel free to reach out to me at lisa at lisamustard.com. And one more thing, the information provided is solely for educational purposes and should not be a substitute for any work you are doing with your doctor or therapist. Want to sign up for Mondays with Moshe? Send an email to [email protected] and ask to be a part of the group. View the Mondays with Moshe Youtube channel here. Why Men Fear Women with Dr. Avrum Weiss
Today, I have a truly special guest. An award-winning author, a captivating speaker, a dedicated teacher, and a sought-after consultant, Dr. Avrum Weiss has left an indelible mark on the world of psychotherapy. Nationally celebrated for his pioneering efforts in experiential psychotherapy and his revolutionary insights into the theory of change, Dr. Weiss has not only shaped the field but has also mentored hundreds, introducing them to a more personal, relational model of psychotherapy. In recent years, he's turned his attention to a topic that's both intriguing and essential: understanding the internal lives of men and the intricate dynamics between men and women. His latest book, 'Hidden in Plain Sight: How Men’s Fears of Women Shape Their Intimate Relationships', offers profound insights into this very subject. And when he's not penning transformative works or guiding the next generation of therapists, you can find him enjoying the serene beauty of an island in the mid-coast of Maine, accompanied by his wife and their loyal canine companion. Midlife Milestones: 5 Key Lessons Learned at 50 with Lisa Mustard
In this episode of 'The Therapy Show with Lisa Mustard,' I delve into the profound lessons I've learned as I step into my 50s. 1. Self-Acceptance: I've discovered the power of self-acceptance in my 40s, and now at 50, it feels even more solidified. I've learned to recognize my strengths and weaknesses and work with them, not against them. Self-acceptance doesn't mean complacency, but rather acknowledging where I am now and the potential for growth. 2. Prioritizing Health: In my 40s, I realized the importance of living an optimal and vibrant healthy life. I've maintained strength training and healthy eating, which have helped me cope with midlife hormonal shifts. I've also focused on quality sleep and stress management. I believe it's never too late to get into shape, and I'm living proof of that. 3. Value of Time: I've gained a deeper appreciation for the value of time and the importance of spending it with loved ones and on activities that truly matter. Balancing my time between work, family, and this podcast has been a challenge, but it's a challenge I'm learning to navigate. 4. Resilience: By the age of 50, I've gone through a variety of life's ups and downs, which have taught me resilience. These experiences have not only made me a better therapist but also a stronger woman. I've learned that I can do hard things, I can choose to grow, and I have choices. 5. Life-Long Learning: In my 40s, I learned how to podcast, market my courses, and secure a sponsor for my show. As I step into my 50s, I'm excited to see what new skills and experiences await me, starting with my new interest! Join me in this episode as I share these lessons and how they've shaped my journey. AI in Therapy: Top 5 ChatGPT Prompts for Private Practice with Lisa Mustard
In this episode we're diving into the intersection of technology and therapy, exploring the potential of Artificial Intelligence to augment our therapeutic work. In particular, we're focusing on ChatGPT, an AI developed by OpenAI, and how it can be utilized in private practice by generating prompts. Listen to the episode with Kym Tolson. Get ALL THE PODCOURSES for $30! First, ChatGPT can aid in understanding specific therapeutic techniques. For example, a therapist could ask: 'ChatGPT, can you help me understand how cognitive behavioral therapy techniques can be effectively utilized for a client struggling with anxiety and panic attacks? What are some possible exercises or strategies we can work through?' In response, ChatGPT might offer explanations of exposure therapy, cognitive restructuring, or relaxation techniques that could be useful for the client. Second, ChatGPT can assist in formulating questions to help explore a client's self-perception. A therapist could say, 'ChatGPT, I have a new client who is struggling with self-esteem issues. Can you generate some questions that I could use during our sessions?' ChatGPT could then suggest questions like 'What are three personal strengths you believe you possess?' or 'How do you react when you make a mistake?' to help the therapist gain insights into the client's self-perception. Third, ChatGPT can provide explanations of complex therapeutic modalities. For instance, 'ChatGPT, could you provide me with an explanation of the fundamentals of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy?' In response, it might offer a breakdown of the eight phases of EMDR or suggest practical examples of its use in trauma therapy. Fourth, ChatGPT can be useful for preparing group therapy sessions. A therapist could ask: 'ChatGPT, I'm seeing an increase in clients dealing with workplace stress. Can you provide an outline for a possible group therapy session that focuses on developing coping strategies and building resilience?' It might then outline a session incorporating stress management techniques, role-play exercises, and group discussions. Lastly, ChatGPT can support in developing a treatment plan. The prompt could be: 'ChatGPT, I need some help to create a treatment plan for a patient suffering from severe social anxiety. Can you provide some guidance?' From there, it could suggest steps including initial rapport building, psychoeducation, skills training, cognitive restructuring, exposure therapy, and maintenance. In all these ways, AI like ChatGPT can serve as an invaluable resource for therapists, supplementing our skills and knowledge. It's not about replacing the human connection, which is central to therapy, but about leveraging technology to enhance it. As always, any use of AI should prioritize confidentiality and ethical considerations. The Therapy Show with Lisa Mustard is sponsored by TherapyNotes! Welcome to "The Art of Reinventing Yourself in Midlife," where I share my tips for finding new paths and embracing change. In today's episode, I delve into five key strategies to help you navigate the journey of reinventing yourself in midlife. On my quest for reinvention, I discovered that self-reflection is the cornerstone. Embrace those deep thoughts and ask yourself, "What brings me joy? What skills do I want to develop?" It's time to embark on a journey aligned with your authentic self. Maybe writing is your newfound passion—imagine a career as a freelance writer or a blog where your expertise shines! As I continued my exploration, I uncovered the importance of seeking opportunities for learning and growth. No matter your age, learning keeps the fire within burning bright! Enroll in online courses, attend workshops, or find mentors who fuel your hunger for knowledge. Picture yourself capturing the world through a camera lens, thanks to a photography course or a local photography club. The possibilities for reinvention are endless! My adventure wouldn't be complete without cultivating a supportive network. Surround yourself with like-minded souls who cheer you on and believe in your dreams. Join networking groups, attend conferences, and connect with mentors who inspire and guide you. Picture the incredible insights and collaboration opportunities that await you in mastermind groups or vibrant online forums. Together, we're unstoppable! As I trekked onward, I discovered the secret sauce: embracing flexibility and adaptability. Change can be intimidating, but it's where the magic happens. Embrace it with open arms, turning setbacks into stepping stones. If you stumble along your new career path, don't fret! Stay nimble, adjust your approach, and explore alternative routes. With resilience and perseverance, you'll conquer any challenge. And last but not least: taking action and setting goals! Dreams are fantastic, but concrete steps and goals make them come to life. How to Create Your First Podcourse with Lisa Mustard
Ready to dive into the world of podcourses? In this episode, I'm going to break it down for you. First things first, let's talk about the technical aspects. To create your own podcourse or self-study course, you'll need a learning management system. If you're just testing the waters and don't want to commit to a platform like Teachable or Kajabi right away, I recommend checking out FreshLearn (affiliate link). They have an all-in-one platform and offer a free trial for you to test it out and see if it suits your needs. Now, let's discuss recording your content. Do you prefer audio, video, or both? Personally, I like to keep it simple and use Zoom to record my podcourses. Once I have the content, I pass it on to my editor, who works her magic on it. If you're a busy therapist like me, I highly recommend outsourcing the editing process. If you need help finding an editor, I can connect you with mine, Chelsea. She's fantastic and very helpful. Connect with Chelsea Weaver Podcasting. Alright, let's move on to the content and the steps to get approved as a continuing education provider. I want to share a great resource with you—an episode by Dr. David Hall and James Marland called "Scaling Your Therapy Practice with Continuing Education Courses." They explain different ways to become an approved provider and provide valuable insights. I highly recommend giving it a listen after you finish here. Now, when it comes to content, I'll share what I did to get approved by NBCC (National Board for Certified Counselors). Head over to the NBCC website and explore their CE Provider information. It's all laid out there for you. It may take some time to read through it carefully and understand what you need to do, but it's not too difficult. Here's a quick overview of what you'll need to know if you're aiming for self-study approved provider status. You must create your self-study course before applying. NBCC wants to see your course as a customer would experience it. This includes your landing page, sales page, course materials, and more. Now, let's talk about choosing your topic. It's up to you, but I suggest starting with a topic that all therapists need. You'll also need to define your learning objectives, create a knowledge test, include a course evaluation, and offer a certificate of completion. Who will present the material? Will it be you or someone else? Regardless, make sure to follow the NBCC guidelines for presenters. You can find all the details in the provider policy. The amount of continuing education credit you offer depends on the length of your content. You'll need at least 60 minutes of content for 1 contact hour or 1 CE credit. Once your course is ready, upload the content to your learning management system and test everything to ensure it works smoothly. Then, submit the course along with the necessary paperwork to NBCC and wait for their response. You may need to make some changes or edits to meet their requirements, but they are usually very helpful throughout the process. If your course gets approved, they will provide instructions on how to proceed. Now it's time to market your course and hopefully start making sales. Remember, marketing is crucial, so be prepared to put in some effort to spread the word about your amazing courses. I'll cover marketing in another episode and share what I've done to successfully sell my podcourses. Stay tuned for that! I hope this episode has been helpful to you. The Importance of a Digital Detox for Mental Health
In this episode of Therapy Show, I discuss the impact of social media on mental health, particularly for teens and preteens. I highlight an article by Jean Twenge and Jonathan Haidt, which argues that the rise in teen depression rates coincides with the widespread adoption of smartphones and social media. The Surgeon General's Office also released a report highlighting the association between social media use and harm to young people's mental health. I emphasize the importance of setting limits and rules around phone and social media use for children, as each family's approach may differ. As parents, it is our responsibility to put things in place that limit the amount of time our kids are spending on their smartphones and social media. I also share my personal experience of taking a digital detox and the benefits of disconnecting from social media. A digital detox refers to intentionally taking a break from electronic devices and screens, creating a designated time and space for individuals and families to disconnect and focus on activities that promote quality time and connection. Digital detoxes provide an opportunity for families to reconnect, communicate, and engage in activities that foster meaningful connections. I also highlight the benefits of taking regular breaks from screens, including better communication and bonding, improved mental health and well-being, and increased creativity and imagination. Better Screen Time suggests that parents of teens should use a slow and phased process with personal devices and smartphones and delay social media for as long as possible, reinforce positive choices and use poor ones as an opportunity to teach and connect, and create boundaries that work for your teen. For preteens, parents can reinforce family values and help children identify personal values, provide opportunities for children to pursue personal passions, build skills, and learn to unwind without a screen, and teach valuable tech skills such as typing, coding, graphic design, art, learning a skill online or connecting safely with friends and family on a family device. To prevent society's mental health crisis, let's let our kids be kids a little longer. Delay the smartphones. Delay social media. Give your family a digital detox. 5 Reasons You Need to Have an Email List
In this episode I'm sharing the 5 reasons you need to have an email list - seriously this is one of my favorite topics because without an email list, I wouldn’t be where I am today. But before we dive in, I want to share a personal experience from last week. Last week we were in Orlando Florida for a volleyball tournament, and I rarely checked social media. It was so nice to disconnect from the noise and distractions of social media. So nice in fact, it’s been hard for me to log back on now that we’re back home. During this social media hiatus, I sold a few podcourses and connected with some potential guests. I only posted on social media one time. Whenever I step away from the constant scroll and swipe, it allows me to truly immerse myself in the world of email marketing, creating meaningful connections and nurturing relationships with my subscribers. This reminded me of the incredible potential we have to connect with our audience on a deeper level, beyond the surface-level engagement of social media algorithms. Email provides a serene and intimate space where we can share valuable content, insights, and offers that truly resonate with our subscribers. So, let's embrace the wisdom gained from my own vacation experience. Let's explore the fantastic reasons why having an email list is not just a marketing strategy, but a profound means of building authentic connections with our audience. Listen to the episode to hear the 5 reasons you need an email list. If you like this topic, then grab my list of 50 ideas for therapists to generate more income. In the email series I also cover ideas of how to grow your emal list, what types of lead magnets work to grow your list as well the mindset you need to cultivate when stepping outside of the therapy room and pivoting your skill set. Diversifying Your Income Through Bariatric Mental Health Assessments with Ashlyn Douglass-Barnes, LCSW
Meet Ashlyn Douglass-Barnes, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and compassionate therapist in private practice. With a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Social Work from Florida State University, Ashlyn has worked in a variety of settings before heading into private practice including management and supervision of new therapists where Ashlyn learned her love of teaching, supporting, and mentorship. Ashlyn's specialization includes supporting individuals and couples before and after bariatric surgery. As a trained professional in pre-surgical mental health clearance, she offers comprehensive counseling tailored to the unique emotional and psychological aspects of the bariatric journey. Driven by a passion to teach and support other therapists and a commitment to filling a gap in training, Ashlyn Douglass-Barnes, LCSW, took the initiative to create her own specialized program to train mental health providers to conduct pre-surgical mental health clearances. Then realizing another gap created a directory of bariatric therapists. Eating Healthy and Meal Prep for Busy People
In this episode of the Therapy Show, I share my approach to staying healthy and fit as a busy mom in her 50s. I discuss the importance of lifting weights to preserve muscle mass, which decreases as we age. I also stress the importance of eating healthy and meal prepping, focusing on a higher protein diet and unprocessed carbs like starchy vegetables, rice, and quinoa. I recommend prioritizing vegetables and fruits, and buying organic when possible. I also advise against overdoing exercise and encourage listeners to prepare for menopause by controlling stress, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. I share resources like Mind Pump Media, Fighterdiet, Bret Contreras and Katie Sonier for weightlifting programs and suggest that an efficient weightlifting workout can be done in 35-40 minutes. I also share my meal prep routine, which includes using a crockpot to make a variety of meals with chicken, ground beef, and brisket, and involving family members in the process to make it a fun and enjoyable experience. I emphasize the importance of consistency in exercise and eating healthy when you want optimal and vibrant health, at any age. I encourage listeners to make a commitment to themselves to eat healthy and exercise regularly, and to tap into their motivation for change. Remember, change takes time, patience, and consistency, but it is definitely possible. The Therapy Show with Lisa Mustard is sponsored by TherapyNotes! A Therapist’s Guide To Homeschool with Teva Johnstone, LCSW
Teva Johnstone is a therapist and unschooling mom. She decided to homeschool her daughter because she wanted to preserve her beautiful spirit. Teva knew that could best be achieved outside of traditional school. She's been a social worker and therapist for almost a decade and has been featured on numerous panels and podcasts on the topics of parenting, homeschool, and autism and neurodiversity. She was inspired to focus her practice on differently wired kids when she became a mother to a spirited child. Professionally, she noticed a gap in knowledge and dignified treatment of autistic and highly sensitive kids, so she made it her mission to help turn things around within the field of mental health. When she opened her child therapy practice she learned there was a need for parental care, education and support. So she pivoted her approach to more broadly assist parents. She believes homeschool is a great way to foster children's mental health and development. She is passionate about freeing the youth from government school and watching them soar. Teva lives in Southern California and homeschools her daughter in a beautiful corner of the universe. And in this episode, Teva shares about pursuing a parenting path that is different from the norm, how to know if homeschool is right for your child, plus all about her course A Therapist's Guide To Homeschool that will help you give your child better than the status quo so they can have a rich education and be emotionally and socially well. Unleashing Your Potential: Business Ideas for Burnt Out Therapists to Reignite Passion
I can’t believe we are rolling into summer and if you’re concerned about the summer slump of low client referrals or a drop in client session hours, now may be the time to get started on creating an additional stream of income. Or perhaps you’re feeling burnt out on clinical work and are dreaming of starting something new with your clinical skills…Either way I have you covered! In this episode I'm going to discuss 3 income generating options you might want to consider… Before I dive in, it's important to choose options that align with your values, strengths, and experiences plus with determination and creativity, you can thrive beyond clinical work and find fulfillment in their new business ventures. 1.Workshops, trainings and speaking engagements: Conduct sessions for other therapists or even the general public, covering topics such as stress management, self-care techniques, trauma-informed approaches, or specific therapeutic modalities. Or if you have another specialty that therapists can benefit from like social media and marketing, insurance paneling. etc.. Providing these trainings not only allows you to connect with like-minded professionals but also positions you as an authority in your field. Collaboration with local organizations, such as your state associations, agencies, hospitals, schools, or wellness centers can help reach a broader audience. You may have to provide free workshops or trainings to get started and that’s ok because you’re getting your name out there as well as the value you provide. Once you get your feet under you - you can start to charge for your workshops and services. A few years ago I did a free online workshop for my local AAMFT chapter and from that workshop I received paid opportunities..so don’t count out doing things for free or a small fee. It can lead to more opportunities that will be paid. 2.Writing, Publishing, and blogging: You can utilize your expertise in mental health topics by writing and publishing books, articles, blog posts, or even starting a podcast. These avenues not only allow you to reach a wider audience but also build credibility and generate passive income through book sales or sponsored content. Additionally, therapists can monetize their blog or podcast through affiliate marketing. These are great options if you desire to create an income stream that allows you to work from home as well as in the pockets of your day. If you have small children at home and you aren’t able to get out and about as much this is a great option. How do you get started with these? If you want to start writing, I'd suggest looking at upwork or other freelance sites. Experience isn’t always necessary so you can probably find some opportunities. Blogging is still a thing! And the more niche your blog, the better. Now blogging takes time, patience and consistency of effort and action to grow but if you want to work from home and cut back on clinical work - growing a blog could be for you. Blog about things you enjoy and are passionate about and what people are searching for - research shows that people want to be healthier, happier and wealthier, so what niches can you write about that help people in one of these areas? Help them solve problems and give them value. Most bloggers monetize through affiliate marketing. Which means that when they recommend a product or service, they are paid a commission, at no extra cost to the purchaser. For example, one company I’m an affiliate for is the mindfulness app. When someone purchases the app through my link, I receive a commission. There are many affiliate marketing programs out there so get creative. 3.Podcasting: Similar to blogging. Pick your niche, create content, be consistent, add value to your audience. If you are curious about podcasting and want a free course, check out this training from John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneurs on Fire podcast. It’s the same program I went through before starting my podcast. These are just 3 business ideas that I suggest for therapists seeking a change. If you’d like more ideas then be sure to grab my list that includes 50 ideas for creating an additional stream of income. Before I end today’s episode it’s important to know that while these ideas take time to grow - it’s even more important that you take action on starting As a therapist who has experienced burnout from clinical work, I struggled for many months on how to move through it. I went to therapy, I talked to my life coach, I read a bunch of self-help books…and while each were helpful in their own way, nothing really changed for me until I decided to TAKE ACTION. I took messy, chaotic (at times), and imperfect action. And as I’ve mentioned before, the first few attempts at starting something new where flops. But I took what I learned from those ‘failures’ and kept moving forward. I found I was moving through my burn out because I was taking responsibility for controlling what I could - which was figuring out a way to pivot my skills into something new. I actually found that with my new attitude and vision, I was a better therapist. And while I still experience burn out here and there, it’s way more manageable because I am working on growing my business. Take home message? Pick something and start taking action on it. It may help you cope with your burn out. And that's a wrap for today's episode. I hope you found this discussion on business ideas for burnt-out therapists informative and inspiring. If you're a therapist experiencing burnout, remember that taking action and exploring new avenues can lead to a more fulfilling professional journey. What Makes a Good Therapist?
Recently I was asked the question, what makes a good therapist? I’m sharing my list in this episode. The qualities and skills that make a good therapist are crucial in facilitating effective and impactful therapeutic outcomes. A good therapist demonstrates empathy, actively listens to their clients, and maintains a non-judgmental attitude, creating a safe and trusting environment. Trustworthiness, effective communication, and adaptability are also essential, as they allow therapists to tailor their approach to meet individual client needs. Emotional intelligence, cultural competence, and a commitment to lifelong learning contribute to the therapist's ability to navigate diverse client experiences. Additionally, self-awareness and self-care are important for therapists to maintain their own well-being and provide optimal support. Ultimately, a good therapist establishes a strong therapeutic alliance with clients, fostering growth, and facilitating positive change in a compassionate and supportive manner. By gaining clarity on our values, decision-making becomes easier, time management improves, self-care becomes a natural practice, and relationships become stronger. Listen to the episode to hear practical strategies for finding balance, including prioritizing self-care, setting realistic expectations, establishing boundaries, delegating responsibilities, scheduling and organizing, practicing time management, seeking support and building a network, and incorporating mindfulness and gratitude into daily life. Thriving in Midlife: How to Navigate Life's Challenges and Achieve Your Goals with Lisa Mustard
I'm doing something a little different in this week’s episode. I’m calling it a reverse interview - instead of me being the interviewer, I'm the interviewee. Recently I had the pleasure of being on my friend Chris McDonald’s podcast, the Holistic Counseling podcast, where we talked about navigating aging and midlife with ease. She is such a great host and interviewer and I asked her if I could take the interview and add it to my episodes. Chris just joined the PsychCraft network of podcasters - if you haven’t already checked out her show, you won’t be disappointed if holistic counseling and modalities are of interest to you! And if you’re curious about adding holistic counseling treatments to your practice, be sure to check out her trainings. Plus you can earn continuing education contact hours. Hey mama! Exploring the Four C's Self Care Model for Women Mental Health Clinicians with Dr. Karen Dyck and Dr. Melissa Tiessen
In this week's episode I interview Dr. Karen Dyck and Dr. Melissa Tiessen, two mid-career psychologists working in private practice. They founded Intentional Therapists out of a recognition that self-care is incredibly important for mental health clinicians, yet they receive little to no training in this area. The mission of Intentional Therapists is to help female mental health clinicians thrive in their professional roles and normalize self-care in all its forms. During the episode, Karen and Melissa discuss the four C's of their self-care model and how it can help female mental health clinicians move from surviving to thriving in their work and life. Mindfulness Made Easy: Tips and Techniques for Beginners - a Put It into Practice Episode
I had a different topic planned for this week's PIIP episode, however it's been a tough week and I wanted to share what I do when I'm struggling with something - as it may help you too. It's practicing mindfulness. What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the current moment, without judgment or distraction. It involves focusing one's attention on the present experience, including thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment, in a non-judgmental way. Mindfulness is often practiced through various techniques such as meditation, breathing exercises, and body scans. It has been shown to have a wide range of benefits, including reduced stress and anxiety, improved focus and concentration, increased emotional regulation, and greater overall well-being. In this episode I share what mindfulness can help with and how you can become more mindful. Plus learn more about the app I mention in the episode and get a free 7 day trial and a course on transforming your relationship with anxiety. https://mindfulnesscom-partner-program.pxf.io/c/3141999/1521271/16803 (affiliate link) Find a therapist options: Get 10% off your first month of Betterhelp online therapy.
