Ep 191- Author LaDarrion Williams Talks "Blood At The Root"
What if Harry Potter went to an HBCU?
This is the cornerstone question LaDarrion Williams asks and answers in his upcoming debut novel BLOOD AT THE ROOT, which will release on May 7, 2024. A native of Alabama, Williams crafted Blood At The Root after his frustration with the lack of Black magical narratives on film and television.
ABOUT BLOOD AT THE ROOT
A teenager on the run from his past finds the family he never knew existed and the community he never knew he needed at an HBCU for the young, Black, and magical. Enroll in this fresh fantasy debut unlike anything you’ve seen before. More info-
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/738959/blood-at-the-root-by-ladarrion-williams/
As an avid reader, LaDarrion noticed that Black boys are basically non-existent in the YA fantasy section. He hopes this book and series helps change that, adding much needed diversity to both the genre and your local bookstores. His goal is to cultivate a new era of Black fantasy, providing space and agency for Black characters and stories in a new, fresh, and fantastical way.
LaDarrion is currently a resident playwright/co-creator of The Black Creators Collective, where his play UMOJA made its West Coast premiere in January 2022 and produced North Hollywood’s first Black playwrights festival at the Waco Theater Center. Blood at the Root is his first novel. His viral and award-winning short film based on the same concept, is currently on YouTube and Amazon Prime.

Ep. 188- Opening Night of "Patriots" with Michael Stuhlbarg & Will Keen!
In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the new Russia belongs to its oligarchs—and no one is more powerful than billionaire Boris Berezovsky. When an eventual successor to President Boris Yeltsin is needed, Berezovsky turns to the little-known deputy mayor of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin. But soon Putin’s ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky’s reign, setting off a riveting, near-Shakespearean confrontation between the two powerful, fatally flawed men.
Tony® and Emmy® Award nominee Michael Stuhlbarg stars as Berezovsky and Will Keen reprises his Olivier Award-winning turn as Putin in PATRIOTS, a shockingly timely history play from Peter Morgan, creator of “The Crown.”
Don’t miss this strictly limited engagement of Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold’s kinetic, exhilarating production, which reveals to us all how Russia's post-Soviet machinations continue to shape our world to this day.
We are joined by the cast and some of the red carpet VIPS like Brian D'Arcy James, Ben Ahlers, and Jocelyn Bioh!

“AUTUMN IN NEW YORK – VERNON DUKE’S BROADWAY”
Vernon Duke was the creator of such indisputable standards as “April in Paris” and “Autumn in New York.” His legacy as a Broadway composer ultimately rests on 1940’s Cabin in the Sky, but there are countless musical treasures written throughout his career – songs from Banjo Eyes, starring Eddie Cantor and Dancing in the Streets, starring Mary Martin. There’s even a curious meeting at the intersection of Vernon Duke and Ethel Merman – Sadie Thompson. Blackhurst has created a lively show devoted to possibly the only composer to dine regularly with Prokofiev and Gershwin. The show features arrangements by music director Michael Rice.
Klea Blackhurt is an actress, singer and comedienne who has appeared in legendary concert venues from The London Palladium to Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall to Jazz at Lincoln Center and with symphony orchestras from Atlanta to Boston, Pittsburgh to Philly. Most recently she appeared as Emma Goldman in Ragtime: The Symphonic Concert at Tanglewood with the Boston Pops and conductor Keith Lockhart. As well as Ragtime: The Symphonic Concert with the Cincinnati Pops under the direction of John Morris Russell. Her New York theater credits include Party Face opposite Hayley Mills, Bingo, Radio Gals, Oil City Symphony, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Her television appearances include “Pose,” “The Knick,” two seasons on “The Onion News Network” as legal pundit Shelby Cross, “Law & Order” SVU,” and “Sesame Street.” Last season, Klea appeared at the Ogunquit Playhouse where she continues her long association with The Nutty Professor, a new musical by Rupert Holmes and the late Marvin Hamlisch. Originally directed by legendary comedian Jerry Lewis, the show continues its bid for a Broadway run under the direction of Marc Bruni. Klea is a distinguished Alumna of the University of Utah. She is also a proud member of Mendez Boxing Harlem where she is known as The Belter.

Ep 151- Music Superstar Grace Potter & Director Alison Tavel Talk "The Resynator" Now At SXSW
Full disclosure- we love Grace Potter. When we saw her name as an Executive Producer, we were in. Her epic records, live shows, and those vocals are thing of legend. Then we were sent the movie. Alison Tavel is breaking down all the vulnerability and sharing her heart, family, and story in the most touching and profound way with "The Resynator" now selected at the SXSW Festival.
Inventor Don Tavel died suddenly when his newborn daughter was just ten weeks old. Growing up surrounded by mythical stories of her “genius” father, Alison’s life is consequently absent from any meaningful connection to him. Not until she is in her mid-twenties and on tour with rock musician Grace Potter is the seed planted to discover what he invented. Resynator is a narrative documentary that begins when Alison rescues Don’s synthesizer prototype from her grandmother’s attic. What starts off as a curious resurrection project of her dad’s Resynator soon launches into an insatiable, globe-trotting quest to untangle the web of myths and unlock the deep secrets surrounding his life and invention.
Aided by estranged family, lost friends, fellow inventors and celebrated musicians (Grace Potter, Peter Gabriel, Fred Armisen, Gotye, Jon Anderson and more), Alison soon comes to discover Don’s brilliance herself. But in unpacking his life, she also discovers unsettling truths about her father that don't align with her long-held perception of him, as the picture of a vulnerable man emerges to replace the superhero version she had imagined all her life. Not only can she finally relate to him on a human level, but their parallel Resynator journeys reveal an indomitable bond between them.
Listen to this chat about music, family, and making ART!

Ep 146- Natalie Douglas, Cabaret Superstar, Talks Her Beautiful New Album, "Back To The Garden"
We are such fans of Natalie Douglas! That voice! Those arrangements! All she stands for- we are FANS! We had the chance to have a special in-depth chat about her new album "Back To The Garden" now streaming!
Back to the Garden is a potent mix of golden age standards, pop gems of the Woodstock generation, and special surprises. Highlights include a vivacious big band arrangement of the Cole Porter classic “Begin the Beguine;” a tender, lilting version on the ballad “You’ll Never Know,” with a sensuous string arrangement; a charming jazz age take on the Kern, Hammerstein and Harbach gem “Who?;” and a driving rock-inspired interpretation of Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock.”
The emotional centerpiece of the album is “Love Is the Power That Heals Me,” a soaring anthem written just for Natalie by Club44 label co-founders Wayne Haun and Joel Lindsey. “The lyrics feel so very me,” Natalie reflects. “This song is brand new and sounds completely 21st century, but it has some of that mid-century flavor that I first heard in my parents’ record collection. I will always be an unabashed fan of clear, full-throated singing and direct, romantic lyrics.”
The album’s buried treasure is “He Lives in a World of His Own,” a majestic song with the seductive build of a vintage James Bond theme, written by Lionel Bart, the Tony Award-winning creator of the stage musical Oliver! Natalie discovered it while researching her tribute to the iconic Dame Shirley Bassey. Bart wrote this as special material for Bassey’s audition for Oliver!’s tragic heroine, Nancy. Even though the role ultimately went to to Georgia Brown, history has left us with this showstopper for Natalie to unearth.
“Trust in Me” originates from the beloved Disney movie The Jungle Book. “I was obsessed with The Jungle Book as a child!,” Natalie recalls. “I swear I drove my parents batty singing the songs incessantly! When it came time to create this album, I couldn’t resist the chance to take ‘Trust in Me’ in a whole different direction. I love how the lyric promises safety and comfort, but the music lets you know there’s an undercurrent of danger. That’s what brings out the sex in this song – even though it’s meant for children. Genius!”
Natalie’s version of “Work Song” is an homage to Nina Simone, whom she previously honored with a full album. “Nina is my inspiration in all things,” she comments. “She was brilliant, ferocious, resilient, utter genius, so I’ll never tire of singing her material. I was all in when Wayne suggested re-recording this, which I first sang on the 2005 recording of my Nina Simone show at Birdland. I will always love that live performance – we had such a blast! And now it makes me so happy to re-record a brass-centric version of this song all these years later.”
Back to the Garden closes with her heartfelt rendition of “True Colors,” popularized by Cyndi Lauper in the ‘80s. “This song means so much to those of us who’ve felt unseen or unwelcome in this world,” Natalie concludes. “Cyndi Lauper is that fusion of artist and activist that is vital to creative life. The world has made progress in the almost 40 years since this song came out, but there are forces working overtime to return us to the Dark Ages, when anyone not straight, not white, not cis or not gentile, wasn’t truly safe or fully a citizen. It feels important to record our version of this song right now.”
Stream the album wherever music is heard!
