Nathan Samuelson is a trumpet player and vocalist who guest entertains on cruises across the world. His sound is jazz, but with a pop sensibility. Nathan has studied under master teachers such as Dominic Spera, Alan Hood, and his mentor --international trumpeter and producer Gary Guthman. Nathan’s singing is reminiscent of the classic crooners of the 20th century, which complements his smooth, melodic and hip trumpet style. Thomas Hooten is Principal Trumpet of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Hooten began his career in 2000 with a trumpet/cornet position in “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C., where he was often a featured soloist. He went on to join the Indianapolis Symphony as Assistant Principal Trumpet in 2004, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in 2006, and the LA Philharmonic in 2012. He released Trumpet Call, his first solo album, in 2011. In 2019, he recorded John Williams’ Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, which was conducted by the composer. Hooten is on the faculty at the University of Southern California where he and his wife, Jennifer Marotta, teach the trumpet studio. Ralph Pyl started trumpet at age 12 on the northern beaches of Sydney Australia beginning his career studying and learning with US trumpet players and mentors John Hoffman and Dick Montz. Ralph has performed and recorded with many artists both in Australia and overseas. Ralph’s credits have also seen him playing in several stage and theatre productions and has his recording credits include over 150 albums and numerous motion picture sound tracks and TV commercials. Ralph has been a member of the Channel Nine Midday Show Band. Other TV show bands include playing with the John Foreman Orchestra on Australian Idol for 7 years. Reinhold Friedrich has been a prolific performer on major stages around the world such as the Musikverein in Vienna, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Berlin Philharmonie. As a soloist, Reinhold Friedrich performs both on modern and historic keyed trumpet with renowned ensembles such as the Bamberger and Wiener Symphoniker, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Berliner Barock Solisten and the Cappella Andrea Barca; conducted amongst others by Sir András Schiff, Reinhard Goebel, Sir Neville Marriner, Christopher Hogwood, Semyon Bychkov, Michael Gielen, Adam Fischer and Vladimir Fedossejev. From 1983 to 1999 Reinhold Friedrich held the position of solo trumpeter at the Radio Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt. He is permanent solo trumpeter of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under Claudio Abbado, now Riccardo Chailly, and artistic director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra Brass Ensemble. Greg Adams is a founding member of the band Tower of Power and became widely known for his trumpet playing and horn arranging. Dontae Winslow is one of the most versatile in-demand trumpeter/arranger/composers on the Hollywood music scene. A native of New Orleans, Robert Karon received his Bachelor of Arts cum laude in Music from UCLA and Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in New York City. He was the recipient of the Longy Award for achievement in Solfege. His teachers include Robert DiVall, Irving Bush, William Vacchiano, and Arnold Jacobs. Proficient in three languages, Karon toured South America, the Far East, and Europe during his two years with the Mexico City Philharmonic and played first trumpet with the Maracaibo Symphony Orchestra in Venezuela. In contrast, Karon also toured nationally with Engelbert Humperdinck and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Upon his return to the U.S., Karon has performed as principal trumpet of the Sacramento Symphony as well as a member of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and other Los Angeles based freelance orchestras. Wim Van Hasselt is a Belgian soloist and chamber musician. Currently based in Switzerland, the artist performs regularly in Europe, North America and Asia. For many years Wim Van Hasselt was a member of the trumpet section with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. Trumpeter Peter Bond is beginning his 19th season with the Metropolitan Opera orchestra. A native of Illinois, Mr. Bond earned a degree in Music Education from Western Illinois University with the intention of becoming a high school band director, but decided to instead to pursue a playing career. He was invited by a former professor to do graduate work at Georgia State University, where he began serious orchestral training with Atlanta Symphony principal trumpet John Head. For the next seven years, Mr. Bond enjoyed a busy career as a freelance musician in Atlanta. In 1987 he he took his first orchestra audition and was appointed principal trumpet in the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Five years later, he won his position with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Our special guest this episode is Markus Stockhausen, born in 1957, trumpeter and composer is well-known as a versatile artist, at home in many genres. For 25 years he performed with his father the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, who wrote numerous works for him. Mike Zonshine is our special guest this episode. At the age of 22 Mike Zonshine joined the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra as its Principal Trumpet Player-a job he held for almost a decade when the orchestra ceased operations. Mike has studied at Boston University, at the Eastman School of Music, and at the University of Southern California. Also, Mike was twice a part of the Tanglewood Music Center's famed fellowship program-once winning the Voisin Trumpet Award. As a teacher Mike has taught extensively:  He co-founded the University of Hawaii Trumpet Ensemble, which soon became an ensemble that involved the entire trumpet community of the island of Oahu. Jon Faddis began playing the trumpet at the age of eight, inspired by an appearance of Louis Armstrong on the Ed Sullivan Show. Three years later, his trumpet teacher Bill Catalano (an alumnus of the Stan Kenton Band) turned Jon on to Dizzy Gillespie, with whom he subsequently appeared at the famed Jazz Workshop in San Francisco. Two days before his 18th birthday, Jon joined the Lionel Hampton Band as a featured soloist, and in the same year was invited to sit in with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band on one of their regular Monday night sessions at the Village Vanguard. Mr. Faddis toured and recorded with this band for four years and also studied at the Manhattan School of Music during this period. Since then, Jon Faddis has become known throughout the world as one of the most innovative and inspiring jazz trumpeters of our time. Jazz trumpeter Marquis Hill is our special guest on this episode of The Other Side of the Bell. The New York Times described him as a “dauntingly skilled trumpeter,” and the Chicago Tribune asserts that “his music crystallizes the hard-hitting, hard-swinging spirit of Chicago jazz.” Hill hones a warm, mellifluous tone on trumpet and flugelhorn with which he unravels sleek melodic passages that are as commanding as they are cogent.  As a composer, he builds upon his distinctive sound to craft arresting originals that embrace post-bop, hip-hop, R&B and spoken word. Trumpeter Pete Olstad is our special guest this episode. Pete Olstad is a SoCal native who earned a performance/educator degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Alan Ware is our special guest on The Other Side of the Bell. Alan was born in 1937 in Wichita, Kansas. In 1955 Alan joined the Army after which he enrolled at The Berklee School of Music in Boston. In 1969, he joined Bill Chase's new band, which was still in rehearsal. The band toured the Midwest extensively until the first album produced a hit in April of 1971. Alan left the band as a regular in 1973. Alan played gigs in Las Vegas until 1981 when he was elected Business Gent for the Musicians Union of Las Vegas, Local 369. James Thompson is Professor of Trumpet at the renowned Eastman School of Music. He came to this position having played Principal Trumpet in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since September 1990. Christopher Still, second trumpet with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is the featured guest on this episode. Chris joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2007. Before coming to California, Chris performed as Principal Trumpet of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Chris has also held the positions of Associate Principal Trumpet of the Dallas Symphony and Principal Trumpet of the Charleston Symphony. Additionally, he has served as Assistant Principal Trumpet with the Grant Park Festival Orchestra in Chicago's Millenium Park. He has performed with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Portland Symphony, Boston Philharmonic, Vermont Symphony, and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Galicia in La Coruna, Spain. Chris has appeared as a soloist with the Colorado and the Littleton Symphonies. He can be heard on recordings with the Grant Park, Dallas, and Albany Symphony orchestras.
