Options Playbook Radio 248: Huddling Up About Earnings Spreads, ITM Calls, Exchange and More

THE HUDDLE Comment from Georgi - Hi Brian, Thanks a lot for taking the time and elaborate on my question about OTM Calls, on Jan 17 on Options Playbook Radio! You guys are doing a great job! I have been listening to you for a while and I am very pleased with the content and the way you present it. I enjoyed how you tried to pronounce my Yahoo nickname "joro joro ". My name, in fact, it is Georgi or George in English. Cheers,Georgi G. Question from Dave B. - Hi, I have a question about what is the best strategy to use for my trading system. I typically am only right on about three or four trades out of every 10 with long stock. The trades that I am wrong on, I take a small loss - somewhere between 5 to 10% but only 1-2% of the total capital as I typically take 10% positions. The trades that I am right on, I typically make 50% up to 200% over a 3 to 12 month period. I want to find an options strategy to increase returns via leverage, but keep total portfolio risk per trade about the same. Would DITM calls or spreads make sense to you?  Or is there another strategy I could (should) consider. Thank you! Dave B. Question from T Whitaker - I like all of Brian’s earnings strategy episodes of options playbook. It seems like Brian prefers to use skip strike butterflies whenever trading around earnings. But are there ever times when he will utilize other strategies around earnings - maybe straight long/short calls or puts when he feels there is an edge? Good show and loving the playbook website as an addendum. Question from Leg77 - MIAX making it official with 16 exchanges. What do you guys think about more players entering the options game? Question from LaCrute2 - Funded my Ally options account and I’m enjoying the options playbook program. Thinking about picking up the book as well. We need to have Brian and Mark do a regular show for the Ally options folks that we can listen to while we’re trading.

Question from Jelevis - Does it make sense to just get long ratio vertical put spreads in VXX as opposed to just buying the puts? Make the premium negligible so you don’t get hurt if it spikes against you in the near term. If it drops it will probably do so slowly so you have time to get out. Or you can just pick up VXX shares - at a hopefully low strike price so further erosion will be limited. Then you can always just wheel out of those if the need arises. Thoughts Vol swammis? Sent from my iPhone Question from LLAZ - What do you think of call verticals in $USO here? Maybe 3-month 5 or 10% otm? Worth financing with a put? Question from DaQuinta - I've been lured in by the ongoing selloff in crude oil and I'm thinking about setting up a longer-term stock replacement strategy in the USO ETF. I have a couple of questions: A.) With $USO dropping below $11 is it even worth doing or should I just buy the shares instead? Is there a certain threshold where stock replacement stops making sense? B.) My proposed construction is an almost six-month strategy with July 8 Calls for $3.10. So my outlay for 100 shares is $3100 versus $10,800. C. Is it even worth selling a Jan 11.5 call and limiting all of my upside just to collect $.15 or should I keep it open from here?       AROUND THE BLOCK This Week’s Economic Reports Feb 15: Import and Export Prices, Industrial Production, Business Inventories, Consumer Sentiment

This Week in Futures Options 139: Shifting and Sliding Around the Volatility Skew

Topics this week include: Crude Oil Metals/Gold Ags/Hogs         FUTURES OPTIONS FEEDBACK Question from Caesar L. - Why is palladium catching such a bid? Worth more than gold again? Question from Model X - Ask the Russell guy which of the Russell products puts up the most contracts? Also when’s the move/shift stuff coming? Question from Studio64 - Why don’t we see more flavors of equity volatility? There’s VIX and then there’s Eurostoxx and that’s pretty much it. There was talk of more on the horizon but nothing has come of it yet? I’d like more underlying indices other than S&P and more methodology than just the base VIX methodology (maybe some sort of skew product). Thoughts? Question from Brandon Elliot - Have any good rules of thumb when trading the term structure in seasonal products like corn? Maybe a point when the spreads are just too wide or narrow and need to be traded? What’s typical holding period for these trades? Longer than a month? Thx for answering.

Volatility Views 341: Talking VIX, Spikes, VXXB, Earnings Volatility and More

VOLATILITY REVIEW VIX Cash - 17.18, can you say Bullseye!? VVIX - 87.5, approx. 8-points higher than last show, dipped to 76.45 earlier this week. VIX Options - 156k, ADV: 497k, Total 8.72m (6.68m Calls, 2.05m Puts) VXXB - 35, 2-points lower than last show. Today - 40k, ADV - 199k     VOLATILITY VOICEMAIL #QOTW - With everyone still shaking off #SuperBowl haze, let's start the week by applying your trading mindset to next season. If you had to buy a call on one team to make it into next year's big game - which team are you buying? Feeling another team - let us know below. - Patriots - Rams - Bears (legally obligated) - Saints Question from Brian Collamer - Hi Mark, Listened to the last VV show and heard you mention my trade again and thought I'd set the record straight....This trade was in my ROTH, can't be naked anything.  Sold one 15 call, bought two 19 calls. Got a credit of .05c.  Did I buy or sell to open this position? Closed position for a debit of .07c.  Did I buy or sell to close this position? Round trip with commissions cost was a little under $30 (Probably should have bought Salvo's book instead of giving turity bucks to TD Ameritrade...) I think I had the right idea for a hedge, just got the "moneyness" of the strikes wrong. VX curve was very flat. March call prices were very close in price to May calls.  Since I'm paying almost the same price for a May call spread vs a March call spread, does it make sense to get more time to expiration?  Thanks again! Question from BPin - Heard your discussion of the listener question from Brian Collamer on the last few episodes. Seems like the main concern was being short “units.” Can you clarify what you meant by that? Cool show. What do you guys think of the vix coverage on zero hedge? Comment from Options Game - Translated from French by Microsoft - You should follow @Options, it's a good podcasts that will give you ideas.     CRYSTAL BALL Last week: Mark L. - 17.05 Mark S. - 15.25 Next week: Mark L. -17.25 Mark S. - 16.26

This Week in Futures Options 138: Your Questions About Crude, Equities, Volatility and More

FUTURES OPTIONS FEEDBACK Question from Franks - What’s the best entry futures option for newbies? I’m thinking something in the equities because most people are coming from stocks? I’d guess stuff like seasonal crop cycles would blow their minds. Question from Behr12 - What do you guys think? I don’t think crude vol can sustain for long at these levels. - RE: Oil: Are Options Signaling Long-Term Uncertainty? https://www.cmegroup.com/podcasts/off-the-charts-podcast-series/oil-are-options-signaling-long-term-uncertainty.html Question from J Swager - We stuck range bound in WTI for next few months between 48-55? Any signs in the vol that we might be heading for a move beyond in either direction? Question from Bob Engles - Do all the synthetics that hold for eq opts like long stock/short call = short put also hold for futures options? Question from Alcore - How far out can I go in eMini S&P or rut options? Does it make sense to do collars out to max expiration? Or maybe just a couple of years? Question from The Poet - What does it mean when an options is delta skewed? Question from Kaichi - You said all vertical trades were skew but what about calendars and diagonals? Isn’t that skew? Comment from Steve A: Best series of shows about trading options on the net Question from Opt Addict - I see a lot of talk about delta neutral trading using equity options but not so much with futures options. Why is that? Is it just not a popular strategy or is there a fundamental difference on the futures side that makes it less viable to dynamically delta hedge a position?
