Dr. Humza Nusrat is a medical physicist, researcher, and professor. Dr. Nusrat attended Ontario Tech University, formerly known as UOIT, and received a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences. He then attained his PhD in biomedical physics at Toronto Metropolitan University, formerly known as Ryerson. Following his PhD, Dr. Nusrat completed his medical physics residency. Now, he is working as a medical physicist in one of Canada’s largest cancer clinics at Sunnybrook Hospital. Seann Seto is a pharmacist and medical science liaison. Seann attended Western University for medical science but left after his third year when he was accepted into pharmacy school. Seann received his PharmD from the University of Toronto and then completed his hospital pharmacy residency at University Health Network. After his residency, Seann worked first as a clinical pharmacist on the oncology team at Toronto General Hospital, then in the cardiology intensive care unit in Sunnybrook Hospital. Dr. Imogen Coe is a biology professor at Toronto Metropolitan University and the founding dean of the Faculty of Science at TMU. Dr. Coe received a Bachelor of Science with a major in biology from the University of Exeter in England. She then went on to receive her master’s and PhD in biology from the University of Victoria in Vancouver, Canada. Following her PhD, Dr. Coe completed two post-doctoral fellowships before becoming a professor at York University in Toronto. During her time at York, Dr. Coe acted as chair and associate dean. Following these roles, she became the founding dean of the Faculty of Science at Toronto Metropolitan University. Alessandro Profenna is a gameplay programmer, currently working at Digital Extremes. Jelena Madzarevic is a building and material sciences specialist at EllisDon, a very well-known global construction company. Jelena earned her Bachelor of Science from Toronto Metropolitan University with a chemistry major and a physics minor. She then went on to earn a Master of Building Science, also from TMU. In her current position, Jelena conducts design reviews and risk advisements, amongst many other responsibilities in the construction services division. In this conversation, Jelena talks about the many opportunities that chemistry has to offer. A career in construction is quite untraditional for a chemistry major, yet so applicable. Lauren Phillips is the Chief Product Officer of BioBox Analytics, a techbio startup company for biological data analysis. Lauren attended Toronto Metropolitan University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in the Biomedical Science program. With an interest in medicine and research, Lauren became interested in paediatric brain cancer research, which led her to her Master of Science degree at the University of Toronto for Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology. During her master’s, Lauren met the co-founders of BioBox and joined the techbio start-up with the mission to help scientists with their biological data. As CPO, Lauren is responsible for designing and testing the software features, as well as communicating with clients’ needs and relaying feedback to the BioBox team.   In this conversation, Lauren gives us an inside perspective on what it’s like working in a startup. She discusses the many opportunities within the field of biology and how it has led to her current role.
