When Your Product Launch Fails...
So, your product launch just crashed and burned. Or is crashing and burning at the moment.Trust me, I've been there, and it sucks. But here's the thing - it's not the end of the world. In fact, it might just be the start of something amazing.I'm Jordan, and I've been a part of 200+ product launches. And in that mix - not every one was a standout winner. But you know what? Each one taught me something valuable.So today, I'm going to share with you the five things I do every time a launch goes south. These tactics have saved my ass more times than I can count.It's Not PersonalBut first things first, let's get real. Let's get a little personal. You can't take this launch personally.A failed launch does NOT mean you're a failure. It just means something didn't work. Maybe your timing was off, or your message didn't hit right. Or maybe it was the wrong offer to the wrong person. Whatever it is, we're going to fix it.My First Major FlopNow, let me tell you about my first major flop.I spent six months developing this personal branding course. I had it jam-packed with "value" and hours of lessons. I shot the videos in 4K. I snuck into a professional studio to film it all. I was so confident, I even hired a web designer to make the course site look professional.Launch day came, and... nothing. I mean, my wife didn't even download it.So if I were to turn back time and try to save that launch from falling flat and getting zero customers - here's what I would do, now that I'm a little bit older and a touch bit wiser.Five Ways to Save Your Failed Launch1. Talk to Everyone Who Will ListenNot just potential customers, but anyone who'd give me five minutes. Friends, family, that guy at the coffee shop. Ask them what they think about the problem you're trying to solve. Turns out, I was solving a problem nobody really had.Here's what you do: Get on every platform you can. Email, social media, hell, even go old school and text an old friend. Ask people what they think. Find the communities where your audience lives. Don't just stick to where you want to go.Ask genuine questions that get to the heart of the problem. It's not questions of "would you buy my product?" It's questions like "What is your biggest frustration currently with BLANK?"And actually fucking listen. Don't defend your product. Don't lead the witness.Let me give you an example. I spent a whole day sending video DMs on Twitter to Founders. I was asking them about their thoughts on Product Hunt. Is it worth it? I learned more in those 22 conversations than I did in 6 months of "building in private". People opened up about their real struggles with Product Hunt, and none of them matched what my agency was doing. It was a wake-up call, but a necessary one.2. Rewrite EverythingAll my product descriptions, my emails, my social posts, website sales copy. Everything. I realized I was talking about features when I should've been talking about benefits.In many parts of my sales copy, I was too quick to jump into the sales pitch rather than setting up the problem.Your job: Take a hard look at how you're describing your product. Are you telling people what it does, or are you showing them how it'll make their lives better? Are you poking at their problems? Big difference.I'll never forget sitting down to rewrite my course's sales page. At this point, I've probably re-written that page about 11 times.So when you're in launch mode - get feedback, watch your users on your site, and then rewrite the copy where people are falling off. If people aren't even making it past the hero section at the top, then focus your efforts there.3. Find Your Real AudienceTurns out, the people I thought would love my product didn't give a shit. But you know who did? A completely different group I hadn't even considered.For my online course - Million Dollar Edit. I was going to train up-and-coming video editors, and teach them how to edit faster and become more efficient freelancers so that I can get more clients.And the more I ran the Million Dollar Edit, the more I saw that a new type of student was walking in the door. It was small business owners who wanted to train their junior video editor on how to edit faster and better.And after talking with these new customers, I made the pivot. And my online course went from $1000 a month to $10,000 a month.What you need to do: Look at who's actually showing interest in your product. They might not be who you expected. And your first guess is usually wrong.Be ready to pivot your entire approach to reach these people.By changing who you originally served – you are not a sellout. You are not a failure.A lot of founders will die on this hill because they want to help one specific type of person. Even if that person isn't buying.And if you are one of those founders – I have a question for you. What's it like being broke?4. Ask for Brutal HonestyI reached out to the few people who did try my product and asked them to be ruthlessly honest. It was hard to hear, but man, was it valuable.When these customers are at the checkout, make sure you're collecting both their email and phone number.And then, once these people do become paying customers, I want you to text them on day one. I want you to text them on day seven. And I want you to text them on day 10.When a customer first walks in the door and they've paid you, that is open and free permission for you to text them and ask them who they are, what is going on in their life that brought them there, and what problems are they currently facing?Because everything that they say in those text messages, you are going to take that and rework it into your sales copy, into your social media posts, and into your email marketing.Why do we need to reinvent sales copy when we can just speak like our customers by using their exact words?Now in those text conversations, you are going to get some brutal feedback about your app.In this case, unlike what I said at the beginning of this video, I do want you to take their feedback personally. Because this is the only way for it to stab you in the chest and get you off your ass and start improving your product.Their feedback should keep you up at night.5. Keep GoingThis is the hardest part. When everything's going wrong, it's tempting to quit. But here's the truth - every successful entrepreneur has been where you are right now.What you gotta do: Remember why you started this in the first place. That passion, that belief - hold onto it. Use it to fuel you through the tough times.Keep hacking at it to find your ideal customer.I'll be honest, there were days I wanted to quit. Days when I felt like a total failure. I had built up this launch. I made all the graphics and videos. Everything was scheduled to post. And when all the dust settled. Not a damn thing happened.But then I'd remember why I started - to help my clients. Be beholden to your clients.Now, let me be clear - this last note isn't a quick fix. It took me months to turn things around. But you know what? That "failed" course launch ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me. It forced me to really understand my market, to make a product people actually wanted.The Truth About EntrepreneurshipHere's the thing about entrepreneurship - it's not about never failing. It's about how you handle failure when it happens. And trust me, it will happen. To everyone.The ones who make it are the ones who get back up, learn from it, and make the right changes.And you have to do all three. You have to get back up. Actually learn from it. And make the right changes.I remember the day things started to turn around. I got a sale from a user - a small gym owner who wanted to start making more videos. They left a video review. Bookmarked that. And it reminded me why all the struggle was worth it.Closing ThoughtsSo, if you're sitting there right now, looking at your failed launch and feeling like crap, I get it. Hell, some days I'm still there. But I need you to do something for me. Take a deep breath, remember why you started all this in the first place, and then get to work.Talk to people - and I mean really talk to them. How THIS 'Messy' Strategy Landed Me My 1st 100 Customers
September 30, 2024I want to talk to you about a concept that might be holding you back from getting your first 100 customers.The #1 reason why startup founders fail to launch, fail to get new customers - is that they are too fancy…Their fanciness and polish when it comes to every part of their marketing is what is holding a lot of startup founders back. It's what held me back for quite a few years before I got my first 100 customers, before I got my first 1,000 customers.I read this a long time ago in one of Dan Kennedy's books. He talks about Suits vs. Work Boots."Suits" are those who prioritize appearance and polish over substance and action, while "Work Boots" are those who roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty, and focus on getting things done.💪 Principle #1: Focus on Immediate, Tangible ProblemsI believe in solving real problems. Today's problems. If it doesn't matter to the customer right now, it doesn't matter at all.Be your customer's paramedic - not their physical therapist. What's the pain point? What's broken? Let's fix that.I trust problems I can see. If I can't touch it, I'm not worrying about it. Fix what's in front of you, then move on to the next.🗣️ Principle #2: Speak Your Customer's Language, Avoid Jargon at All CostsI have zero interest in impressing anyone. Especially with fancy language or insider terms. If my customer can't understand me, then how are they going to buy from me?Jargon is a way of hiding. It's a smokescreen.I don't need to sound smart—I need to be understood.If you can't explain what you're doing in plain words, you're either overcomplicating it or don't actually understand it. People like simplicity because it's honest. It cuts through the noise.My customers are people, not industry experts. I talk like a person. Like them.🔧 Principle #3: Embrace the "In the Trenches" MentalityI'm in the trenches. I'm not above the work, and I don't pretend I am. If you're running a startup, you're in the dirt with me.You have to get your hands dirty. You have to know your product inside and out. You have to know your customers inside and out.And trying to be above it all - that's a suit's mentality.🚀 Principle #4: Launch Fast, Use Hype to Your AdvantageI don't wait for perfect. Launching something new has been the easiest way I've found to build an audience.Every time I go to launch a new product, a new video, a new anything - I have an excuse to shamelessly put myself in front of my clients.Momentum is everything. It feels like something is moving. Something is changing. It's the difference between watching a river and watching a swamp.Every launch teaches you something. I learn faster by doing than by perfecting. Suits want everything polished first. Work boots know rough around the edges is where the action happens.🛠️ Principle #5: Master Tools Before OutsourcingI don't outsource what I don't understand. If I don't know how the tools work, I can't manage the people using them.I like to be in the trenches as much as possible but when I do outsource - I first have to know the process. Know the tools. Because this is the easiest way that I've scammed myself.Knowing how to edit videos or how to edit a website - I can then speak to the freelancer with some level of confidence instead of being a helpless person floating on a raft.I know when you're BS-ing. I know when you're overinflating the process.🌟 Principle #6: Take a Stand—Show the Mud and ScratchesI don't hide behind fancy designs. If there's mud on my boots, I let you see it. Suits hide. They gloss over flaws, inflate the truth, and sell you the shine, not the substance.I want to tell the truth about my product. And every time that I've done this, I've gained a higher level of respect from my clients.Is this delayed? Is this new thing coming soon? Is this thing broken and I knew about it?Yes. And I'm upfront about it. I'm working on it and I'm going to tell you personally when it's up and running.Your customers know when you're patting their pretty little head. I wanted to talk today about a philosophy that I've been thinking about. I mean speed to action. You have an idea, you have a strategy, you put your goals together, you put your little sprint together. How quickly can you execute that? Can you do everything within a couple of days?That's been my overarching philosophy in work, running a business, even being a full-time employee.Speed to Learning and ExecutionWith speed to execution, I think there are a couple of things inside of it.One is speed to learning how to do something and not being afraid of kind of going out into open water and trying to figure something out, something that is unknown. A lot of folks can get paralyzed by that. They will just not know.For example, this year, I learned how to use Framer.com. I've never used it before. I thought, “Well, I don’t wanna get left behind not knowing this skill.”So with Framer, for example, it is watching every video I can and then watching, testing, watching, doing, watching, testing. It's not just study, study, study, read a book, watch all the videos. It's study it, understand it, and then try to do it in your everyday life. I think a lot of people get addicted to learning. I was addicted to learning. Two years ago, I had my “reading habit” where in one year, I read 50 books. That sounds impressive…But really it was more procrastination. Instead of doing the thing, I just wanted to learn how to do the thing. I just needed one more book to understand how this works. And then once I understand how this works, then I can go and execute, then I can start taking action.Cut all that out. My advice is to cut out that habit. It's about how quickly can you learn to do a skill? How quickly can you become adept at using that skill? And then the other side of the coin is how quickly can you execute? How quickly can you take that knowledge or that idea and put it into action or put it into a test?Iterating and Testing in Your BusinessIf you're a startup founder right now, how quickly and how many tests can you run this year? We have 100 days left this year. How many small little tests can you run? Little experiments.Because you don't know what will work or what won't work unless you test it, unless you are fast enough to get it up and running.So if you are a technical founder, for example, and marketing is something that is a foreign language to you, how quickly can you learn marketing? Can you take an online course real quick, study everything, download a kit and be good enough at marketing to where you could at least follow the steps? It's almost like a recipe. You don't have to become a master chef…But can you study it, watch enough food videos, and then read the recipe and say, okay, from a couple of videos that I watched, I think I can do that and do it sloppily, make mistakes along the way, not be perfect on the first attempt. It would be insane to get it perfect on the first attempt.So how can you do that? How can you take that knowledge, apply that knowledge, test it out, learn from it, and then do it all over?The Role of Ego and Self-BeliefAnd the last thing that's unsaid with this, and speaking personally about how I've done it in my career, is yes, it's speed, execution, iterating, learning quickly, all of that. But I think underneath all of that, you have to kind of be obnoxious. I won't say narcissist, but you have to have this—I thought about what Casey Neistat said a long time ago in one of his videos about why the vlogger, when you're vlogging, or I think he was talking about like talking in public, he's like, you have to have a level of ego to believe that you are the person to be doing this, to believe that it's my job or I'm the one that's going to do this, or I believe I'm the only person that can do this. You have to have that level of ego and not let it be a negative thing, but use it to your advantage.So if you are egotistical or you're not egotistical, for me, I'm a little egotistical, but I can be aware of my ego. I can have a little self-inflated ego and use that self-inflated ego to my advantage and not let my big ego get in the way of doing what I want to do or trying to execute. But it’s taking that ego, harnessing it and blasting it towards a positive direction you want to go in life.I believe I can launch this startup.I believe now is the time to share this with my audience.I believe I can make an impact.Because this is the moment, this is what I believe that we need to be doing right now, and we are the people to do it.That's the attitude you have to have. They’re about one thing: converting visitors into customers. Every element on your page should serve this singular purpose. If it doesn’t, it needs to go.Let’s break down the key elements of a high-converting sales page and see where you might be falling short.1. Your Hero Section Needs a MakeoverYou’ve got 5 seconds to make an impression.That’s it.In those crucial moments, you need to grab attention, spark interest, and compel the visitor to keep scrolling. Most founders miss the mark here. They use vague, uninspiring headlines like “Grow Your Business” or “Innovate Your Workflow.” These generic phrases do nothing to differentiate you or create urgency.Instead, hit them with specificity and a clear value proposition: “Get Your First 1,000 Customers In 10 Days.”This headline does three things at once: it targets a specific audience (new businesses), offers a concrete benefit (1,000 customers), and provides a timeframe (10 days).It’s specific, measurable, and compelling.That’s the difference between a headline that makes someone yawn and one that makes them want to know more.2. Prove Your Worth Before You PitchHere’s a hard pill to swallow: at this stage, nobody knows who you are.Your startup? It’s just another name in a sea of companies vying for attention. Trust? You haven’t earned it yet. So before you start waxing poetic about your amazing features, you need to prove you can deliver results.How do you do this?Start with real testimonials, and don’t just use a name and a quote.Link to LinkedIn profiles or company websites. This adds a layer of credibility and shows these are real people with real opinions. Next, showcase specific results.Instead of saying “We’ve helped many startups,” say “We’ve helped startups earn $594,500 in launch revenue.” The specificity here is key – it’s concrete, impressive, and believable.Finally, display logos of companies your customers have worked with. This associative credibility can go a long way in building trust quickly.Remember: Build trust first, then sell. Without trust, even the best features in the world won’t convince anyone to buy.3. Get Personal with Your Problem Statement“Are you struggling to grow your business?”This kind of generic problem statement is the fastest way to lose your reader’s interest.Every business struggles with growth. You need to get specific, get personal, and show that you truly understand your target customer’s unique challenges.Try this instead: “You’re a startup founder with a product you believe in.But you haven’t launched yet because: 1) You’re overwhelmed by conflicting advice and have no clear starting point, 2) Despite your expertise in your field, you feel like an impostor in the world of marketing and sales, 3) You’re terrified that after all your hard work, no one will buy.” This problem statement speaks directly to the emotional and practical challenges of your target audience.It shows you understand their specific situation, which makes them more likely to believe you have the solution.4. When describing your solution, always tie it back to the problems and desired outcomes you’ve identified.This creates a narrative that your potential customers can see themselves in.5. Use Bonuses StrategicallyBonuses aren’t just nice-to-haves or afterthoughts.They’re strategic tools to sweeten the deal and overcome lingering objections. Each bonus should serve a purpose – whether it’s adding extra value, addressing a specific pain point, or overcoming a common objection.For example: “Bonus: Access to our private Slack channel where successful founders share their launch strategies and offer peer support (Value: $997/year).”This bonus addresses multiple needs: it provides ongoing support, offers a community (addressing the feeling of being alone in the journey), and gives access to proven strategies from peers.When crafting your bonuses, think about what else your customer needs to succeed, and how you can provide that in a high-value, low-cost (to you) way.6. Anticipate and Crush ObjectionsEvery potential customer has objections.Your job is to anticipate and address each one before it becomes a roadblock to purchase. Common objections include concerns about price, time investment, and effectiveness.Use price anchoring to address cost concerns: “Most startups spend upwards of $50,000 on their launch, hiring separate experts for strategy, copywriting, and ads. Our comprehensive program gives you all of this for a fraction of the cost.”This puts your pricing in perspective and highlights the value you’re offering.For those worried about time investment, emphasize the efficiency of your solution: “Our streamlined process takes just 3 hours a week. We’ve distilled years of expertise into a focused system that respects your time while delivering results.”Address effectiveness concerns with a strong guarantee: “Test drive everything for 90 days.If you don’t see measurable progress towards your launch goals, we’ll refund every penny. No questions asked.” A guarantee like this shows confidence in your product and removes the risk for the buyer.7. Close with Confidence and ClarityThe end of your sales page is not the time for subtlety.It’s time to bring together everything you’ve presented and make a clear, compelling case for action.Recap everything they’re getting – your core offer, all the bonuses, the guarantee.Paint a vivid picture of success: “A year from now, you could be celebrating your successful launch, watching your customer base grow, and finally seeing the fruits of your hard work.Or you could still be stuck in the same place, watching competitors pass you by, wondering ‘what if.’”Then, hit them with a clear, impossible-to-miss call-to-action. The world is telling you that we need MORE VIDEO CONTENT. And you're the face of your company, so...it's showtime!But how do I become a natural in front of the camera (without becoming a tool)?🥵 Go It Alone...As a cinematographer, I have sat behind the lens as powerful, multinational CEOs sit down and sweat their ass off - trying to get this script delivered properly. And they were using a teleprompter! My only thought in this scenario is... "I wish these folks could record this alone in a room without an audience."🕧 Find the time. Reserve the conference room. 🍕 Send your family off to go get pizza, and take this time for yourself. 💃 So Much Room for Activities...The best examples of newbies recording themselves is using a screencap software like Loom (https://www.loom.com). And why do they always look so natural? Because they have something to do. Sitting awkwardly in your spare bedroom trying to say something witty never works out. Instead, have something to do, something to show, something to read. Nearly all of my past livestreams have been led by a slide deck just off-screen. Here's an example:🪃 Fail, Fail, Fail...This is where having a second or third camera battery comes in handy. Hit record, and just let the camera roll. You're alone in your room - mess it up, start over, start from where you left off. Only you and your editing software will see all the mistakes.🎥 Create. Commit.Much like writing online for the first time, it's scary...you feel like you're free-falling and the whole world is watching.
