Wellness at Home: Nutrition and Energy
Amy D'Angelo is a wellness real estate professional with over 15 years of experience. Her wide range of interests over the years have included launching a healthy food business to managing facilities for an international non-profit. Her current passion is focusing on helping busy professionals and families achieve wellness at home by creating simple and affordable strategies that are based on the best practices of the wellness real estate movement. Amy believes that by making small and positive changes, in our homes, in the food we eat or the ways that we handle stress, we can inspire those around us to live a healthier, more fulfilled life. Kay Curtis is an educator of 25 years, a young widow and a breast cancer survivor, the subject of health through proper nutrition and a nontoxic environment has become of great interest to her. But how she got to this point in her personal and professional life is a perilous story that brought her very close to knocking on heaven’s door. She was eating very poorly: fast food, frozen food from Costco, etc. I also smoked. Then her husband died suddenly (he was very unhealthy) and left her a widow at 35. This led her to research chemicals in our environment. She removed all of them from her personal care items and household. She quit smoking because she believed all those things to be the source of her cancer. But right around the same time, she was tutoring one of the most brilliant children she had ever met in her education career (as an Educational Consultant). He was five years old and could do long division and read at a 3rd grade level. But he was a little strange, so his mother put him on Zoloft. He started losing his memory and abilities. It was a side effect of the drug. It was horrifying to watch. Kay had other students that were prescribed Ritalin and Prozac and saw what these drugs did to these poor children and decided to go back to school and learn Nutrition in order to be able offer an alternative to them and their parents. Founders of Alter Eco -- Joe Lombardi and Brian Falcon
Joe Lombardi is a registered architect in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Michigan & Florida. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, Pennsylvania Society of Architects and holds certifications from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) as well as Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design Certification (LEED AP). He graduated Cum Laude with a BArch degree from Temple University in 1987 and received his first state architectural registration in 1989. At a young age he discovered an interest in the process of conceiving an idea, putting it on paper and implementing the construction of it in both practical form (designing and building speaker cabinets and musical instrument road cases) and artistic expression (wood carving, sketching & jewelry making). While also developing a business sense by selling these items to local musicians and in local shops. Joe’s architectural career was fueled by a passion for the investigation and development of the use of new and underutilized existing proven products and technologies which increased comfort, while providing energy and construction efficiency in Residential and Commercial design & construction. Over the past 26 years of architectural practice he has been able to balance the ability to provide services to a homeowner wanting to renovate their home to meet the changing needs of their family as well as a large commercial client that is expanding a several hundred thousand square foot entertainment venue. He attributes this to the sense of teamwork that is promoted between the owner, contractor and architect as well as listening intently to the client’s needs in order to reach the programmatic, aesthetic and budgetary goals for the project. He has Implemented and managed office CAD systems, created and managed Master Detail Library & Project File database systems and developed and maintained a proprietary specification & contractor database system. He served as adjunct staff at Philadelphia University from 1997 to 1998 where he taught a 3d CAD visualization course. He also has studied guitar, recorded and performed original music in and around the Philadelphia area for over 40 years with notable shows at the World Café & Troc Theaters in Philadelphia and The World Café Queen Theater in Delaware. He is a husband for over 28 years and father of two children. Brian Falcon has always been passionate about sustainable living and design. He is a registered architect in Pennsylvania, and became a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED®AP) in 2004, to focus professionally on sustainability and energy efficiency. In 2008, he founded the Berks/Lancaster Green Building Association to help local, like-minded professionals collectively expand their green building skills at the grassroots level. Most recently, Brian has become a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC), as certified through the Passive House Institute US (PHIUS). This program incorporates high performance building science principles and passive house techniques to create the best path to Net Zero and Net Positive Energy buildings. To improve the efficiency of project design and construction processes, Brian is highly experienced with Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. BIM is used to create a digital 3-dimensional representation of a project with multiple layers of intelligent data which may be analyzed at any time during the design, construction or occupancy phase of a building. Building the project virtually ensures accuracy and improves the understanding how building components and assemblies work together, which greatly reduces “unknowns” and other inefficiencies during construction. In addition, BIM provides a highly effective way for those not used to reading conventional construction drawings to feel fully engaged as part of the design team. Brian is married with four children. He is a nationally licensed soccer coach and has coached all four kids. The family enjoys camping and connecting with nature whenever possible. At home Brian leads the family in exploring the world of permaculture to learn how to live more holistically by designing and building fun and multi-functional projects on their property which provide food, energy, aesthetics and natural habitat for beneficial animals. Show Highlights Zero energy readiness. Alter Eco’s success, selection process, and standard/program choices. Passive House vs Net Zero Ready Homes for advanced energy modeling. Best practices, programs(LEED, Passive House, DOE), certification and chapter benefits. Misconceptions on implementing sustainable programs, how architects can steer the ship, and the concept of trade ops. Advantages of having architects who can simplify details with sustainability in mind during the building process. Trends of a 2,500 sq home feeling like a 4,000 sqm. Electrification and designing all electric buildings and homes. Selecting prefabbed, cut off site, more modular components or whole systems on projects. “We kind of proved in our first homes that we built, that we can achieve this level of a home at the same cost as a code-built stick-built home.” -Joe Lombardi “If you're excited and passionate about sustainability or preservation, whatever it is wholeheartedly, chase that down with every ounce of energy you have. You might sound goofy sometimes asking questions you think are silly or, or whatever. I would say don't ever fear that. Embrace that. Embrace the beginner's mind, whatever you're doing, because it's only going to help you learn along the way and be more successful.” -Brian Falcon Joe Lombardi & Brian Falcon’s Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES GBES is excited our membership community is growing. He is ambitious, enjoys material comfort and everything sensual and nature-related. When we look at the way we design and build our buildings, the only way forward is by creating good green buildings. Buildings that lead to improved health for homeowners, reduced impact on the environment and profit for the building industry. Emmanuel is a strong believer in a new paradigm for the Real Estate Industry which is based on trust based team formation, early collaboration, built-in sustainability and transformational leadership. That's the important question. “You can regenerate everything, your relationship, your life, whatever project you're working on in your career. It's more about what happens in the place than the actual built infrastructure. How does it impact humans? What’s the social impact of communities? What new interaction do you develop with nature? Sweden’s Green & Healthy Building Updates With LEED Fellow Sue Clark
Sue Clark is a LEED Fellow, WELL AP and WELL Faculty with Architects, where she serves as Project Leader in Sustainability. Sue is also Interim WELL Manager at Sweden Green Building Council and a member of SGBC's LEED Advisory Committee. Beginning in 2006, Sue worked extensively with the Canada Green Building Council, leading one of CaGBC’s LEED certification assessment teams and serving on multiple volunteer groups including CaGBC’s Technical Advisory Group for Sites and Water. After moving to Sweden in 2011, Sue brought her expertise in LEED to Sweden Green Building Council, where she organized the Council’s LEED Advisory Committee, LEED working groups and multiple task forces to address issues of implementing LEED in Sweden. As a LEED Consultant, Sue has participated on more than a dozen LEED projects across Canada, and in Sweden she led the LEED consultancy on Mästerhuset, Stockholm's first LEED NC Platinum project. Now working with Tengbom, Sue joins the firm's sustainability group implementing ambitious goals for a better built environment in Sweden and beyond. Tengbom is one of the oldest architectural firms in the world focusing every build to be healthier, climate ready, low carbon impact and circular. Internal competences to address the EU and Sweden’s climate declaration, mandates, and emerging legislative trends. Buildings are not designed appropriately for the future. Climate adapted building and the tools that address climate risks for that specific location and design strategies. How cat food and drywall pushed transparency? “This industry is just so much about personal relationships that I'd say it's really totally worth doing. The other thing I would recommend is beware the specialization, stay a generalist, as long as you can. I think the people out there that are really great at sustainability are really great generalists, and there will always be this temptation to go down these different rabbit holes of sustainability, like becoming a daylight expert or an LCA expert. It's not that these things aren't fantastic, but the more you specialize, the more you have to sacrifice this comprehensive picture.” -Sue Clark Sue Clark’s Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES GBES is excited our membership community is growing. Clients that focus on sustainability as a key driver for their built environment projects motivate and move the industry. Sustainability challenges, materials and projects that incentivized the Hawaiian region to be efficient. The codes have really caught up to LEED with the ASHRAE 90.1 approach to LEED. The embodied carbon impact of the building products take on an ever greater importance. A push for mass timber as part of the future of the building industry. Jim’s highlight project that was completely focused on sustainability and creating a teaching building to tell the story of sustainability. “With the Living Building Challenge, as an example, you've got to power the building with the light that falls on the site and provide water with what falls on the site. I would like to see these solutions be solved on the municipal level; that way, the building operator is not also running an energy plant and a water treatment plant. It would be much better if we still had distributed systems, but solve some of these issues on a greater scale. I'm hoping we will start to look more comprehensively at communities rather than building by building.” Jim Nicolow’s Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES GBES is excited our membership community is growing. I want people to know we not only have the responsibility - but the power to build a better world for ourselves and for the generations that follow us.” -Alicia Silva Alicia Silva’s Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES GBES is excited our membership community is growing.
