Transformed by the Spirit: Joy
Continuing our series exploring how the life of the Holy Spirit transforms us into the image of God, this Sunday we take a look at joy as a fruit of the Spirit. Joy, unlike happiness, is not based on circumstances. Instead, Jesus is the source and supplier of our joy, and by following the example of his life and death on the cross, we can endure trials and tribulations with joy.Support the show

Transformed by the Spirit: Peace
As we continue our series exploring how the life of the Holy Spirit transforms us into the image of God, this Sunday we take a look at peace, a characteristic of the fruit of the Spirit. The call to be "peacemakers" stands between two false alternatives we see around us and throughout history: on the one hand, justice through violence and destruction; on the one other hand, peace in spite of oppression.Support the show

Transformed by the Spirit: What is love...
We are in the middle of a 12 week series exploring how the life of the Holy Spirit transforms us into the image of God. This Sunday we take a look at the first characteristic of the fruit of the Spirit: love. We see, through the Apostle Paul’s words, what love is and isn't. Paul warns us that the evidence of love in one's life is primarily not charisma (gifts of the Spirit), but character (a life that is rooted and reflects Jesus).Support the show

Transformed by the Spirit: Growth with the Great Gardener
We are in the middle of a 12 week series exploring how the life of the Holy Spirit transforms us into the image of God. Today we explore Paul's comparison of the works of the flesh to the fruit (singular) of the Spirit. This agricultural image is intentional. The transformation of a Christian is like a seed planted in the ground -- it is organic, it is gradual, it requires the attention of the Great Gardner and it will bear fruit.Support the show

Transformed by the Spirit: Spirit at Work
We are in the middle of a 12 week series exploring how the life of the Holy Spirit transforms us into the image of God. This week Stan showed us what walking in the Spirit actually means. We looked at specific ways that we see the Holy Spirit at work in us. Scripture promises that this 'fruit' will be the natural growth of any believer walking hand in hand with the Spirit. It is organic growth from the inside out, not a forced behavioral change.Support the show

Transformed by the Spirit: Organic Growth
Last Sunday we began a 12 week series exploring how the life of the Holy Spirit transforms us into the image of God. The work of the Spirit in one’s life can be described as organic growth. The heart must be able to receive the word of God. We will look at the different soils (hearts of man) and how each responds to the words of Jesus. Which soil are you?Support the show

Transformed by the Spirit: The True Vine
This Sunday we begin a new 12 week series exploring how the life of the Holy Spirit transforms us into the image of God. Before we can understand the call to bear fruit, we must get a picture of Jesus, the True Vine, and what it means to be connected to Him. Our life-source must come from Him. What does Jesus mean when He says “He is the True Vine”? How can we remain connected to Him? If the Spirit is truly in us, how will we live and how will the world see us?Support the show

Life, Death, and Resurrection: Resurrection
On Easter Sunday, we conclude our series studying Jesus' dependence on the Holy Spirit in is his life, death, and resurrection. This week we celebrate Jesus' resurrection! The way Jesus approached his scared and doubting followers after he rose from the grave says much. Here is a tender savior who accepted people where they were, being patient and gentle with them. He did what we couldn't so that he could take us by the hand and lead us in the same way.Support the show

Life, Death, and Resurrection: Death
This Sunday we continue our series leading up to Easter looking at Jesus' dependence on the Holy Spirit in his life, death, and resurrection. Today we inspect what Jesus' death says about him. This is the story of a person who has entered fully into our particular human experience to the utmost, and who, out of love, forfeited the most precious thing God has given to those who bear His image: His animating, energizing Spirit, the breath that gives life to all of creation.Support the show

Life, Death, and Resurrection: Life
We are beginning a new series leading up to Easter looking at Jesus' dependence on the Holy Spirit in his life, death, and resurrection. This week we explore Jesus' life and his childlike dependence and childlike wonder. We despise and avoid the limits of our humanity, but the good news is that we are now enamored by a King who, though he was equal in status with God, did not count that as something to be grasped, but humbled himself to the point of death on a cross.Support the show

The Holy Spirit Revealed: Water
This week we explored the Holy Spirit as life giving water. In scripture we hear God comparing His abundant life to a river of living water, bringing places in our lives that were once dead back to life. Ezekiel's vision shows us what it looks like to abandon ourselves in the river of the Holy Spirit—to experience the fullness of the Spirit instead of just knowing the Spirit.Support the show

The Holy Spirit Revealed: Fire
This Sunday we explore the Holy Spirit as fire—an explosive, refining power. All throughout scripture we see God appearing as fire, eventually culminating in the coming of the Holy Spirit to the apostles. The Holy Spirit now dwells within us convicting, refining, and empowering us to live directly connected to God. So how do we see the fire of the Holy Spirit in our lives?Support the show

The Holy Spirit Revealed: Dove
This Sunday Stan walked us through the Holy Spirit as a dove—a gentle and comforting presence. In scripture we see the Holy Spirit come as a dove to rest on Jesus as an anointing authority, empowering him to go begin his ministry. This leads us to ask the question, do I experience the work of the spirit in gentleness?Support the show

The Holy Spirit Revealed: Voice

The Holy Spirit Revealed: Breath
We've talked about the big picture Holy Spirit — a member of the Trinity and part of our faith — now let's make him personal. In scripture we see the Holy Spirit manifest himself as symbols we can understand — fire, a dove, a voice. The next 5 weeks we'll be looking at these symbols of the Spirit, starting with the Spirit as breath. What did it mean for Jesus to breathe the Spirit on the disciples? What does that mean for us?Support the show

The Promised Holy Spirit: Part 3
The last two weeks, Stan began to introduce us to the Holy Spirit; who is He and how is He connected to God? Stan unpacked how the Holy Spirit IS God, the third person of the Trinity. This Sunday we concluded our Promised Holy Spirit series and explored the tangible role of the Holy Spirit in our lives individually and as a community. How does He work in our lives today? How does He advance the mission of the Son? Support the show

The Promised Holy Spirit: Part 2
Last Sunday, Stan shared the heart behind why we are studying the Holy Spirit. This week, we dove into the theology of the Holy Spirit. People tend to see the Holy Spirit as a force, a power, an experience, a feeling or an “it.” But the truth is, the Holy Spirit is not any one of those limited things. He is a person that is a part of the Godhead, the Trinity. Scripture shows us that He is Creator, Life Giver and Sustainer of all things. In other words, He is the source of all power!Support the show

The Promised Holy Spirit: Part 1
This Sunday Stan starts our new series — "The Promised Holy Spirit” — part of a year-long journey looking at the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. Who is He? Why did He come? What is His primary role? What is His relationship to us as Christians? So many Christians are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with the Holy Spirit even though he is a vital part of the Trinity, the God we worship. Regardless of our church upbringing or lack thereof, we're going to take a look at this Person who is actively and presently working on Earth, in your life, and in our church. We ask that you approach this series with an open mind, an expectation to be wowed by God, and a willingness to see that God is bigger than the box we've put him in.Support the show

God of Miracles: Part 3
Continuing in the “God of Miracles” series, Jordan Richard explores Mark 1:40-45 where Jesus heals a man afflicted by leprosy. An outcast in Jewish society and living in permanent quarantine, the leper’s cry for help moves Jesus to deep, broken compassion. In what ways does our situation mirror the leper? How can we – as people who also face pain, shame, and blame – take reckless steps of active faith? How does Jesus restore our spiritually leprous state into a right relationship with God the Father? God of Miracles: Part 2
In week 2 of our "God of Miracles" series, Jonathan Sheaffer explores 3 miracles in 1 Kings to see where God is in the suffering and where our trust lies. God consistently enters into His people's physical, spiritual, and mental pain and performs miraculous acts for their care. Whether God changes our circumstances or not, we are called to trust him. God of Miracles: Part 1
Pastor Stan Thomas opens the new year with a new series on the God of Miracles, exploring how God unveils his beauty and power through supernatural signs and wonders. As we enter 2021, believers must remember that God is a God of hope, which he proves through his miraculous works. But what kind of King is this, who showers us with his blessings? We Three Kings - Advent 2020
This week Stan finishes the last sermon of our Advent series and our last service of 2021 (thankfully) looking at the Christmas hymn We Three Kings. When the wise men approached the baby Jesus they fell down and worshiped with barely an introduction. The Etiquette and Ethics of Saying Thank You
Our friend & guest speaker Nick Nowalk is back with us this week! As we enter Thanksgiving, we reflect on a Psalm of thankfulness. Giving thanks to God as our Creator and King includes uninhibited enthusiasm, submissive prostration, and loyal love in life. Any of these without the others results in a truncated and falsified form of giving thanks to God. Doing all three together constitutes our flourishing and the service we owe to God ("glorifying God and enjoying Him forever").Support the show

The Book of Acts: Now What? PT 8
We conclude our series on the Book of Acts, "Now What?" We spent the last 8 weeks exploring the early church to get a glimpse of how we are called to be the church in NYC.This Sunday, we will see how the early members of the church, in the midst of persecution and so many unknowns, depended on God and relied on the Holy Spirit to move, grow, protect and sustain the church. We will encounter a God who reveals Himself to the early church through miracles, by healing the sick, delivering those afflicted by demonic oppression, removing physical shackles in prison, and so much more. Politics & The Book of Mark
We're pausing our 'Now What?' sermon series to acknowledge the political goings-on in our country right now. Stan will look at the upside down Kingdom of God in the book of Mark and ask us to examine how we try to solve our problems through the world's methods. The world seeks power through politics, wealth through hoarding, & leadership through domination. But Jesus's life shows power that comes from surrendering to the cross, wealth that comes from giving away, & leadership that comes through being a servant.Scripture:Mark 4:26-34Genesis 28:10-13Daniel 4:9-12Mark 3:31-35Support the show
