Jackie Javier, Manager of Work-Based Learning at Pasadena City College, returns to the podcast to share what she and her team has done to create opportunities during the pandemic. Summer is the most popular and often the only time a student has to get the all important internship. But this last summer, almost all internships shut down. Jackie and her team made the pivot and started working in overdrive to create programs, fairs, and panels that jump started employment and internship opportunities. WorkingNation is a non-profit campaign and media company whose mission is to shine light on solutions to workforce issues. They focus on creating a pathway for a job seeker to a good job by employing the power of story-telling and media. Ramona expresses the importance of “doing” as we grow our careers and skillsets through out the length of our work-life. She tells us that “the skill-based nature that the workforce is heading towards needs to be talked about in the media and exposed as opportunities”.  In this episode we discuss the importance of flipping the script and perspective that a 4-year degree is needed to acquire these “high-tech’ jobs at large companies like Google, when in fact you don’t. The World Trade Center Los Angeles can be considered the international trade arm of the LAEDC. The overall goal is to help the economy thrive and grow. The reality is Los Angeles is a gateway to 40% of the goods that are imported into the United States and California is the hub for much of the technology that is being developed, so how can we lean into the exchange and the industry that we have here in order to imagine an even better future for the United States as we enter the “New Normal”.
