In this episode Sarah Taylor sits down with Kim French the creator of Edit Girls. Edit Girls is a collection of career stories from women working in Post-Production. It began life as an Instagram page, which was founded by Kim French, and kept going with the support of Mathew White and now has a home on it’s webpage www.editgirls.org Edit Girls was born out of frustration at a lack of seeing these stories being told when Kim knew they were out there. She started her career as an editor back in 2006 and would have loved to have had this kind of insight into how other women started their journeys as editors, VFX artists, colourists and sound engineers. Kim started by reaching out to editors that she knew to share their stories but it didn’t take long for women to start approaching her wanting to share how they started their careers and give insight into their working life. It quickly became clear that this was a much-needed space and the response has been so heartwarming.  Kim and Sarah discuss her career journey and how platforms like edit girls are much needed in our society and industry!

Today’s episode is the online master series that took place on September 29th, 2020. Canadian Cinema Editors and American Cinema Editors presented a discussion with animation editor John Venzon, ACE. John Venzon, ACE is a feature film editor who works primarily in Animated Feature films. He was the lead editor on "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut", DreamWorks Animation/Aardman Pictures' "Flushed Away" Warner Animation Group's "Storks",”The Lego Batman Movie” and is currently editing a new animated feature for DreamWorks Animation. This event was moderated by Carolyn Jardina, Tech Editor at the Hollywood Reporter.

Today’s episode is an interview with the recipient of the CCE Career Achievement Award for 2021 — Jane Tattersall. This award is presented to a non-editor who has shown great support for Canadian editors and the editorial profession over the course of their career. Jane has been a fixture in the Canadian post-production industry for over 30 years. Her enormous support for Canadian filmmakers, from our most recognized artists to first-time storytellers, has fostered incredible growth of talent across our industry. Jane’s sound work has taken her to studios beyond Canada, including stints in Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, London, LA, Skywalker, and New York. Numerous credits, nominations and awards followed and today Jane counts over 170 credits (film and television), and over 100 nominations and awards. Jane’s recent sound supervising includes THE HANDMAID’S TALE, THE NORTH WATER and 13 MINUTES.

Today’s episode is the online master series that took place on August 27th, 2020. In Conversation with Madison Thomas. Named one of Playback’s 2019 Five to Watch, Madison Thomas is a Writer, Director and Editor from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her work reflects her mixed cultural roots, Ojibwe, Saulteax, Russian and Ukrainian. Thomas draws inspiration from experiences growing up in the inner city and has committed herself to diverse representation in her work. This episode offers a look at a unique and impressive career in which Thomas has often taken on multiple roles and frequently edits her own work. This experience includes being a Senior Editor- as well as Researcher and Director - on four seasons of the CSA-nominated CBC / APTN series Taken, which shares the true stories of Canada’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous women. Thomas also wrote, directed, and edited her feature film Ruthless Souls, which was selected as part of Telefilm’s inaugural Talent to Watch program, as well as her web series The Colour of Scar Tissue. 

Also a rising star in scripted television, Thomas was a writer on season 3 of the CBC/CW series Burden of Truth. This conversation was moderated by award winning filmmaker Cazhhmere.

Today’s episode is the online master series that took place on August 25th, 2020. In Conversation with Nena Erb, ACE. We discussed her television career which started as a PA in the art department of MADtv and has progressed to being an Emmy winning editor on HBO's documentary series Project Greenlight and Insecure. She has also worked on Crazy Ex Girlfriend and the Apple series Little America. We talked about her work on Insecure which landed her an Emmy win in 2020 and most recently an Eddie award nomination.

Today’s episode is the online master series that took place on August 18th, 2020: In Conversation with Sonia Godding-Togobo. Sonia is a film and television editor to know. Her rise in the industry is nothing short of prolific. After 20 years, she has acquired an assortment of credits including editing television programs for the Oprah Winfrey Network, Channel 4, The Discovery Channel, HGTV and the BBC. In this episode we discuss the award-winning CBC POV documentary Mr. Jane and Finch, a portrait of long-standing community activist and amateur documentarian, Winston LaRose. This talk was moderated by Sedina Fiati, a performer, producer, creator and activist for stage and screen. She holds a BFA in Music Theatre from the University of Windsor and is also a graduate of Etobicoke School of the Arts. Sedina is very active in the Toronto media arts scene advocating for increased representation of people of colour, LGBTQ+, D/deaf and disabled artists on camera and in all creative and crew roles.

It’s been one year since our worlds have changed and we thought it was a good time to check in on our mental health. Sarah Taylor sits down with psychotherapist Rebecca Day to talk about our mental health as creatives in the midst of a pandemic. Rebecca Day is a qualified psychotherapist and freelance documentary producer. She founded her company, Film In Mind in 2018 to address mental health in the film industry and has spoken at festivals such as Berlinale, IDFA, Getting Real Documentary Conference, WIFT and Sheffield DocFest on the issue. She offers therapeutic support and supervision to filmmakers working in difficult situations and with vulnerable people, as well as consultancies and workshops on mental health in the film industry. Her previous feature, Becoming Animal, directed by Emma Davie & Peter Mettler was a Scottish/Swiss co-production and premiered at CPH Dox in 2018. She is currently working with the impact team on Evelyn, an intimate and poignant film about death by suicide, made by academy award-winning director Orlando Von Eisendel at Grain Media and is producing a documentary with first-time feature director, Duncan Cowles titled, Silent Men.

Today’s episode is the online master series that took place on August 4th, 2020. In Conversation with Tom Cross, ACE. Tom and Sarah Taylor discuss his career journey from video store clerk to assistant editor to Oscar awarding winning editor. As well as his collaboration with director Damien Chazelle on the films Whiplash, La La Land and First Man. They also talked about the anticipated release of No Time to Die and what it was like working on the James Bond series.

The CCE partnered with BiPOC TV and film to bring you In Conversation with Jeremy Harty, CCE and Cory Bowles about the movie Black Cop. On its release in 2017, Black Cop garnered critical acclaim as an unapologetic challenge of race and police. With a range of visuals from body cam to camera phones - dash cam to traditional camera work, Black Cop made use of multiple techniques to bring a fast paced hyper connected narrative to life. Edited by Jeremy Harty, CCE and was the directorial debut for Cory Bowles. This event was moderated by Shonna Foster. 

This episode is the online master series that took place on May 24th, 2020 - In Conversation with Mary Stephen, CCE. Born in Hong Kong and based in Paris, Mary Stephen has been working in narrative film and documentary for more than 30 years as an editor. Her work has been screened internationally at Venice, Cannes, and Tribeca film festivals. Known for her decades-long collaboration with French filmmaker Eric Rohmer, she has worked in Europe and Asia on numerous award-winning feature documentaries and fiction including Tiffany Hsiung’s The Apology, Lixin Fan’s Last Train Home, Li Yang’s Blind Mountain, Ann Hui’s Our Time Will Come and the upcoming Love After Love. Ken's diverse career has included editing Joni Mitchell’s ballet The Fiddle and the Drum, Tricia Helfer’s Walk All Over Me and the legendary band the smalls reunion tour documentary Forever Is A Long Time. He has also cut over 100 episodes of Heartland - the longest running one hour drama in Canadian history on which he is currently serving as Supervising Picture Editor. Besides editing, Ken has directed dramatic television, commercials and live sports events. Sarah Taylor and Ken talk about workflow and process with an emphasis on speed and why Ken thinks being fast is part of being a great editor.

Liza Cardinale, ACE is a television editor based in Los Angeles, CA. Her work spans many genres from comedy to fantasy and often features stories with complex female characters. Some of her credits include Outlander, Dead To Me which earned her an Eddie nomination, and the upcoming dramedy On The Verge. We chat about Liza’s editing journey from New York to LA and what life is like during the pandemic.

Today's episode is the online Master Series that took place on May 19th, 2020. Edit Chats with Kimberlee McTaggart, CCE and Thorben Bieger, CCE. Thorben is a CSA nominated editor who has edited several series and a number of features including The Child Remains, Heartbeat and All the Wrong reasons. Kimberlee is a Gemini award winning editor of TV series, docs, and feature films such as Blackbird and the upcoming Little Orphans. Kimberlee and Thorben have worked together on several series such as Call Me Fitz, Pure and Diggstown. They discuss their work, and what it’s like to carve out a successful editing career while working and living in Nova Scotia. This event was moderated by Amanda Mitro.

Lisa has been editing for 20 years on a variety of television and film projects. She has been recognized for her work internationally. Lisa talks about her path on becoming an editor and her aspects of editing. Lisa entered the film industry in 1989, initially working as a camera assistant and in 1995 changed careers moving into post-production. She settled into her first editing job in 1998 and she has been editing ever since. Lisa is a highly regarded editor with movie and series credits for Lifetime, Disney, Sony, Showcase, Hallmark, USA, ABC, CBC, CTV, and Grenada. Her determination and work ethic as an editor has been recognized with many nominations and awards.  Lisa has been nominated for three Daytime Emmys (Monsterville: Cabinet of Souls and two for R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour), she has 10 Awards and 14 nominations. Lisa is best known for her work on My Life Without Me, Loudermilk, Unspeakable, The L Word, You Me Her, R.L. Stine’s: The Haunting Hour and Continuum.

In today’s episode Sarah Taylor chats with Ricardo Acosta, CCE an editor based in Toronto, Canada. He is an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Member and internationally renowned Film Editor, Story Editor, Creative/Editorial Consultant. Ricardo Acosta has been awarded with an Emmy, and has been nominated several times for Genie, Gemini, CCE and CS Awards. Ricardo came to Canada from his native Cuba in 1993, where he studied and worked at the world-renowned Cuban Film Institute in Havana. He has been a fellow of the Sundance Institute (as alumnus and adviser) for several years for the Documentary Editing and Story Lab and The Composer and Sound Design Lab. His film Sembene! (2015), premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and at the Cannes Film Festival. Marmato (2014) premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In this episode we discuss Ricardo’s role as a story rescuer and his work on Shooting Indians, Heman's House, The Blessing and I am Samuel.

In this episode Sarah Taylor sits down with the 2019 career achievement recipient Doug Wilkinson. Doug is a post production supervisor based in Toronto and has worked on many Canadian classics like “My Secret Identity”, “Street Legal” and "The Kids in the Hall". Doug has also worked on films like “Requiem for a Dream.” and "The Shape of Water". Over those years Doug has earned the respect and friendship of many in the editing department as well as producers.  His leadership has put him at the forefront of in-demand Post Supervisors and is a model by which all in editing strive to achieve. In today’s episode Sarah Taylor sit down with Kimberlee McTaggart, CCE. Kimberlee has been working in the Canadian film industry for over 30 years. She graduated from York University with a BFA in film, where she won the Dean’s Prize for Excellence and a national prize from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and TV. More importantly, she met a bunch of cool people who inspired her then and continue to do so today. Despite spending her university years in Toronto, a city she loves, she was immediately drawn back to her home province of Nova Scotia where she has carved out a varied and successful career. Kimberlee produced, directed, and/or edited several award-winning documentaries before beginning to work exclusively in post production in 1994. She also began to work exclusively on non-linear systems, glad to leave the Moviolas and Steenbecks behind! Kimberlee has edited several dramatic series such as Lexx, Gullages, Made in Canada, This Hour has 22 Minutes, Call Me Fitz, Studio Black, Seed, Pure and Diggstown. Her work on the Call Me Fitz pilot brought her one of the last Gemini Awards. She was also nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for her work on both Call Me Fitz and Seed, as well as the feature film Blackbird. Kim took a break from editing for a few years to run a production company where she and her business partner produced several documentaries and two documentary series. She also worked as a business affairs consultant for other companies during this time, and executive produced several short dramatic films. And now, after being back in the editor’s chair for 10 years, she is dipping her toes back in to the producing waters, beginning with the award-winning short film Pearls. In addition to serving on the Board of the CCE, Kimberlee serves as the Chair of Women in Film and Television – Atlantic as well as the Editing Caucus Representative of the Atlantic Regional Council of the DGC.

In this episode Sarah Taylor sits down with the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Dean Balser, CCE. Dean worked on the series The littlest Hobo, Night Heat and countless dramas, comedies, documentaries and factual programs. He was at the forefront of the evolution of editing from film to digital, working on the most advanced editing platforms of the day, including being an early user of Avid systems.  Dean became acclaimed not only for his editing work, but also for his role as a friend and mentor to many in the industry.

In this episode Sarah Taylor sits down with Brenda Terning, Krystal Moss and Scott Parker the edit team behind the Nature of Things series Equus: Story of the Horse. This series has been hugely successful and recently was the most awarded documentary project in Canada at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards. This included winning the Rob Stewart Award for Best Science and Nature Program. The series has also received 18 Alberta Film Award nominations.
