Dr. Mark Hyman
We are seeing an ever-increasing burden of chronic disease, primarily driven by our food and food system. This is perpetuated by agricultural, food, and health care policies that don’t support health. We need to rethink disease and reimagine a food system and a health care system the protects health, unburdens the economy from the weight of obesity and chronic disease, protects the environment, helps reverse climate change, and creates a nation of healthy children and citizens. This podcast is a place for deep conversations about the critical issues of our time in the space of health, wellness, food, and politics. New episodes are released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. I hope you'll join me.

The New Science Of Immuno-Rejuvenation with Dr. Jeffrey Bland
People have never been more curious about strengthening the immune system than they are right now. The COVID-19 pandemic has got us all thinking seriously about our health and what it means to have immune strength, now and in the future. To get the most out of this trying time, we need to be open to looking at our health in ways we haven’t before. My guest today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Dr. Jeffrey Bland, is a pro at that, and for this reason and so many others he is considered the father of Functional Medicine. Dr. Bland has been an internationally recognized leader in the nutritional medicine field for over 35 years. He’s authored five books on nutritional medicine for the healthcare professional and six books on nutrition and health. With his wife, Susan, Dr. Bland founded The Institute for Functional Medicine in 1991, a nonprofit organization focused on educating healthcare practitioners on effective approaches to treating and preventing chronic disease by getting to the root cause.
Dr. Bland has always been a major inspiration for me. I was thrilled to have a video-call with him to discuss new ways of looking at optimal health and immunity in the face of this pandemic. In trying to better understand COVID-19, Dr. Bland went back to the basics of the immune system. He breaks down the processes at work, explains what the now often-heard phrase “cytokine storm” means, and talks about using food as medicine to promote immuno-rejuvenation. That means we’re not just supporting the current state of our immune system, we’re reviving it from the ground up. We talk about this and so much more on this week’s valuable episode.
Here are more of the details from our interview:
Acknowledging the psycho-physical effects of COVID-19 and the three zones of learning the disease offers (4:35)
Dr. Bland’s article, Reflections on the COVID-19 Pandemic (8:17)
The flexibility and adaptability of our immune system (12:21)
Research from the HIV/AIDS epidemic showing dramatic effects of giving African women a simple multi-vitamin (16:35)
Immuno-rejuvenation and why our focus should not be on supporting our immune system but rejuvenating it (19:31)
How phytochemicals in plants impact human immune systems (24:03)
Himalayan tartary buckwheat and its immunopotentiating compounds (28:06)
How food influences the function of our immune system (40:30)
My COVID-19 blog, A Functional Medicine Approach to COVID-19, and what we should be eating now to protect ourselves (48:31)
Five significant changes Dr. Bland predicts in how we will see healthcare globally post-COVID-19 (50:59)
The interrelatedness of our immune and nervous systems, and our control over the function of these systems (1:00:43)

Why Eating Less And Exercising More Is A Recipe For Weight Gain with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
We’ve all heard the fiendishly simple and completely untrue colloquialism that to lose weight you just have to eat less and exercise more. Or that it’s all about willpower and that it’s the individual’s fault if they are fat. Not only are these ideas completely unsupported by the scientific literature, but they also lead to a blame-the-victim mentality that tells people who are struggling with their weight, in a not-so-subtle way, that if they only tried harder they would lose weight. There is only one problem with this point of view: It’s just not true.
What makes us thin, fat, or somewhere in between does indeed have something to do with how much we eat and exercise. But the oversimplification stops there. Complex forces that govern our survival control our weight and metabolism. In fact, there is no one simple reason why an individual may have trouble with his or her weight.
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to weight gain and weight loss.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

Coming To Terms With The New Reality Of COVID-19 with Katie Couric
We’re all going through this era of coronavirus—separately but together. I feel like humanity is taking one big existential breath; it’s a pause for us all to think about our previous normal lives, our currently abnormal lives, and how we want to reinvent life when this whole thing is over. And I know many of us have become confused by the different news outlets sharing different information. When it comes to deciding who is a reliable source, I know Katie Couric is always someone I can trust. I’m honored to have her chat with me for this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy.
Katie is an award-winning journalist, New York Times bestselling author and a co-founder of Stand Up To Cancer. Since its launch in 2008, Stand Up To Cancer has raised more than $600 million to support cutting-edge collaborative science and its research has contributed to six new FDA approved therapies. In 2017, she founded Katie Couric Media, which has developed a number of media projects, including a daily newsletter, a podcast, and digital video series. She has played a part in producing many documentaries, including Fed Up, which I was thrilled to be a part of. Couric was also the executive producer of Unbelievable on Netflix, is developing other scripted projects, and is currently writing her memoir.

Empowering Yourself In The Face Of COVID-19 with Dr. Patrick Hanaway
There are so many questions about how coronavirus can impact our health, and rightfully so. This novel virus has completely changed the way we function as a society and brought about a feeling of uncertainty most of us haven’t ever experienced. But we’re in this together. There is, of course, a wide range of common concerns—from how to protect ourselves and families to what kinds of treatment options exist—but also many new conversations popping up around what supplements we can safely trust for immune strength, if it’s safe to go outdoors, how the virus attaches to surfaces, and so much more.
Last week I was lucky enough to sit down with Dr. Patrick Hanaway for a video-call to talk about these important questions from a Functional Medicine perspective. Dr. Hanaway is the Senior Advisor to the Institute for Functional Medicine, their COVID-19 Task Force Coordinator, and Co-Chair of the IFM Expert Advisory Board. In case you missed it, we’re sharing that as the latest episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy.
*For context, this interview was recorded on April 8, 2020.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Hanaway discuss:
The role of supplements in treating COVID-19 and boosting your immune system
What we know about taking things like vitamin D, elderberry, zinc, and other compounds to protect against COVID-19
Is IV ozone an effective treatment option for COVID-19?
Why what you eat is more essential than ever
Is intermittent fasting or the ketogenic diet a good way to boost immunity?
The potential effectiveness of using hot-cold interaction, such as sauna, to protect against COVID-19
How long is a person still contagious after having the virus and how long does antibody immunity last?
Maintaining practices to ground yourself during this time

The Underlying Causes And Solutions For Women’s Hormonal Imbalances with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
Hormone imbalances are epidemic these days. For example, symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), like mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety, fluid retention, bloating, breast tenderness, sugar cravings, headaches, and sleep disturbances, affect 75 percent of women. But just because you’re a woman doesn’t mean you have to live with these symptoms.
The real fact is that suffering related to menstrual cycles is unnecessary. You might never know this from conventional medicine, which seems to subscribe to the idea that women are destined to suffer throughout their reproductive life and beyond. However, there are actually many things you can do to fix hormonal imbalances.
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating hormonal imbalances in women.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. How To Support Your Spiritual Health In The Time Of COVID-19 with Gabrielle Bernstein
We’re all trying to make sense of the new world order. And while my wife and I stay at home and navigate these unusual times, we find routine and practice to be the core of our wellbeing. We’re meditating every morning, going for walks in the woods, and taking afternoon work breaks to check-in and find time to connect. These seemingly simple actions have become the parts of our day that keep us grounded and optimistic, so we actually even schedule them into our calendars.
One of my favorite people to talk to about the benefits of spiritual and wellness practices is Gabrielle Bernstein. What You Need To Know About COVID-19 Testing with Steven Kleiboeker
Multiple times a day, even multiple times an hour, we’re hearing new information about COVID-19. Some of the most common questions I’ve received have to do with testing. We had our first case of novel coronavirus the same day South Korea had its first case. Yet they are much further ahead of us when it comes to testing, something that has helped them quickly control the virus in a way we haven’t been able to do in the US. They also rapidly took on measures like quarantining and tracing the transmission of the virus.
Of course, there are so many different components that go into successful testing and quelling a pandemic of this size. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I hope to shed some light on those with my guest Dr. Steven Kleiboeker. Throughout our conversation, we cover who should be tested, when, and how, and what kinds of tests are currently available or soon will be. He is the Vice President of Research and Development for Viracor, and is responsible for the scientific direction and oversight of the company's research and development programs as well as the BioPharma and Clinical Trial Biomarker Services research services. Dr. Kleiboeker is board certified as a high-complexity laboratory director, technical supervisor, and clinical consultant by the American Board of Bioanalysis. Over his career, he has published more than 60 scientific manuscripts and serves on editorial boards and as a reviewer for several virological and microbiological journals.
*For context, this interview was recorded on March 31, 2020.
Here are more of the details from our interview:
What we know today about coronavirus, how and when is it transmittable, and why good hygiene is so important as a protective measure (2:29)
The difference between the South Korean and American responses to initial cases, which were both reported on the same day (5:33)
Issues with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s initial COVID-19 tests and testing protocol (7:53)
The COVID-19 test that is currently approved for use (the RT-PCR test), what exactly it tests for, and why there is variation in how long it takes to get test results back (9:47)
Issues with scaling-up the supply chain for all necessary components of coronavirus testing (13:53)
The current approach to coronavirus testing and how it differs from what testing would look like in a perfect world (21:03)
The roll out of coronavirus antibody testing, what antibody tests tell us, and can you get COVID-19 more than once? (28:46)
What we could learn from quantitative testing, or knowing the viral load that an individual is carrying (33:25)
What should you do if you have COVID-19 symptoms? (36:29)
Is it too late to do extensive testing to stop and slow the spread of COVID-19? (42:49)

Special Episode: Medicine In The Age Of COVID-19 And Beyond
It’s natural to have a lot of questions right now. COVID-19 has quickly changed the way we think about health and go about our daily lives. And though we still have a lot to learn about the novel coronavirus, there are also a lot of ways we can keep ourselves, our families, and our communities strong and healthy.
I recently hosted a webinar, along with the doctors at The UltraWellness Center, to answer some of the most important questions about COVID-19. If you missed it, I am sharing it here as a special episode of my podcast, The Doctor’s Farmacy.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationship and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. In August 2017, Dr. Hyman invited Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center.
Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders.Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.
Here’s what we covered in the webinar:
1. How to establish immune resilience now and long term

3. Basic strategies to implement to protect yourself and your family
4. The importance of social distancing and how long we will need to implement this strategy
5. Important tips for anyone dealing with chronic disease

The Functional Medicine Approach To Cancer and Cancer Recurrence with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
Numerous things can contribute to cancer development and cancer recurrence. Studies show diet, exercise, thoughts, feelings, and environmental toxins all influence the initiation, growth, and progression of cancer. And when it comes to treating cancer, we are good at cutting it, burning it, and poisoning it with surgery, radiation, and drugs, but many doctors fail to treat the root cause of the cancer. Functional Medicine empowers patients and practitioners to achieve the highest expression of health by working collaboratively to address the root causes of disease. For example, a Functional Medicine practitioner might say that yes, we still need radiation and other conventional approaches, but what else can we do?
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to cancer and cancer recurrence prevention. Dr. Boham shares patient cases as well as her own experience with a breast cancer diagnosis.

The Real Reason For America’s Obesity Crisis And Chronic Disease Epidemic with Dr. David Kessler
Only about 12% of Americans are considered “metabolically healthy.” That means the other 88% of us aren’t meeting basic medical guidelines for things like blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, and other markers of metabolic health. Which percentage do you fall into? When it comes to answering that question, one common factor is how many fast carbs you’re consuming. These are the carbohydrates that have been processed—yes, that includes sugar—but it also means starches like refined flours and other processed grains. Whole wheat bread is indeed a fast carb.
This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I sat down with Dr. David Kessler to break down the differences between fast and slow carbs, how they affect our health, how our diet became so inundated with fast carbs and what we can do to regain metabolic strength. Dr. Kessler served as commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He is the author of A Question of Intent and The End of Overeating, a New York Times bestseller. He is a pediatrician and has been the dean of the medical schools at Yale and the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Kessler is a graduate of Amherst College, the University of Chicago Law School, and Harvard Medical School.

It Is Possible To Stop Or Reverse Dementia with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
For decades we were taught there was no stopping or reversing cognitive decline, now we know this simply is not true. The brain responds to all the same insults as the rest of the body — stress, poor diet, toxins, lack of exercise or sleep, nutritional deficiencies, high blood sugar, insulin resistance, and more. The term dementia is just a label or diagnosis we associate with a collection of symptoms, it doesn't get to why a person has those symptoms.
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating cognitive health and to review patient cases in which they treated individuals with dementia, memory loss, and cognitive decline.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Boham discuss:
The need for personalized treatment in stopping or reversing dementia and cognitive decline.
Addressing underlying root causes that may be driving dementia such as inflammation caused by high mercury levels, belly or visceral fat, diabetes, pre-diabetes, and insulin resistance.
The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), a global network of dentists, health professionals, and scientists who research the biocompatibility of dental products, including the risks of mercury fillings, fluoride, root canals, and jawbone osteonecrosis. https://iaomt.org/
How a high-fat diet can benefit the brain.
The ability for exercise and meditation to promote BDNF, which is like Miracle-Gro for the brain.

Time To Go In with IN-Q
Sometimes we need to get quiet to really find the answers we’re looking for. What better time to do that than during this down-time at home? Artists, creators, and dreamers have always been our best teachers on breaking free from the distractions of life and just “being” with ourselves. They take facts and turn them into stories from which we can gain new perspectives. We can all learn many different lessons through various mediums—one of my personal favorites is poetry.
This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy* I sat down for a deep talk with poet IN-Q. IN-Q is a National Poetry Slam champion, award-winning poet, and multi-platinum songwriter. His groundbreaking achievements include being named to Oprah's SuperSoul 100 list of the world's most influential thought leaders, being the first spoken word artist to perform with Cirque Du Soleil, and being featured on A&E, ESPN, and HBO's Def Poetry Jam. He's inspired audiences around the world through his live performances and storytelling workshops. Many of his recent poetry videos have gone viral with over 70 million views combined.

You Shouldn’t Need A PhD In Nutrition To Read a Food Label
Today’s food labels are deliberately misleading and confusing, which serves the interests of Big Food, but not the rest of us. Most of us are completely oblivious to what we are eating and its impact on our health and our world. We are mostly unaware of the chemicals that are added to our foods; how the hormones, antibiotics, plastics, and toxins we eat in our everyday foods harm our bodies. There are over 10,000 additives in our food supply, yet only 43% of them are recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And the average American consumes three to five pounds of these additives every year.
In this mini-episode, Dr. Mark Hyman talks about food labeling, food additives, and how the FDA is asleep at the wheel in protecting us. Learn more about these topics and the undeniable harm our food system is doing to human health and to the environment in Dr. Hyman’s new book, Food Fix. foodfixbook.com

What Is Leaky Gut And How Can You Treat It? with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
Most of us (including most doctors) do not recognize or know that digestive problems wreak havoc in the entire body, leading to allergies, arthritis, autoimmune disease, rashes, acne, chronic fatigue, mood disorders, autism, dementia, cancer, and more. So having a healthy gut means more than simply being free of annoyances like bloating or heartburn. It is absolutely central to your health. It is connected to everything that happens in your body. That is why Functional Medicine almost always starts helping people treat chronic health problems by fixing their gut.
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to review two patient cases focused on treating the gut.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Boham discuss:
What is leaky gut, and why does it lead to so many other health issues, including food sensitivities?
How our diet, food supply, over-reliance on antibiotics, acid blockers, steroids, and more can lead to leaky gut
Using stool testing and Cyrex testing to assess gut health.
The ‘5R’ program (remove, replace, reinoculate, repair, and rebalance) that Functional Medicine uses as a guide to treat chronic issues.
Remove stressors: get rid of things that negatively affect the environment of the GI tract including allergic foods and parasites or other bad bugs such as bacteria or yeast. This might involve using an allergy “elimination diet” to find out what foods are causing GI symptoms or it may involve taking drugs or herbs to eradicate a particular bug.
Replace digestive secretions: add back things like digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid, and bile acids that are required for proper digestion and that may be compromised by diet, drugs, diseases, aging, or other factors.
Reinoculate. Help beneficial bacteria flourish by ingesting probiotic foods or supplements that contain the so-called “good” GI bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacillus species, and by consuming the high soluble fiber foods that good bugs like to eat, called “prebiotics.” Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms found in the gut that are also called “friendly bacteria.” Use of antibiotics kills both good and bad bacteria. Probiotics in the form of supplements or food are needed to re-inoculate the gut. Fermented foods, such as yogurt, miso, and tempeh are food sources of probiotics. Prebiotics are nondigestible food ingredients that selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial microorganisms already in the colon. In other words, prebiotics feed probiotics. Prebiotics are available in many foods that contain a fiber called inulin, including artichokes, garlic, leeks, onion, chicory, tofu, and other soy products. Grains such as barley, flax, oats, and wheat are also good sources of prebiotics. Another good prebiotic source is a supplement called “fructo-oligosaccharide” or FOS.
Repair. Help the lining of the GI tract repair itself by supplying key nutrients that can often be in short supply in a disease state, such as zinc, antioxidants (e.g. vitamins A, C, and E), fish oil, and the amino acid glutamine.
Rebalance. Pay attention to lifestyle choices – sleep, exercise and stress can all affect the GI tract.

How To Fix Your Brain And Live A Genius Life with Max Lugavere
Did you know dementia begins in the brain decades before symptoms start showing up? We can see changes in brain scans 30 or 40 years before forgetfulness and other disconcerting symptoms creep in. But I’ve seen so many patients overcome symptoms of brain dysfunction through the right diet and lifestyle changes. If our actions can have that much power to reverse some forms of brain illness, why aren’t we talking more about using them for prevention? I’ve seen people with genetic predispositions avoid a diagnosis altogether by living a conscious life.
That’s exactly what my guest and good friend, Max Lugavere, and I get into on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Max lost his mom last year to a rare disease called Lewy body dementia, which comes along with the neurodegenerative and physical symptoms of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Max is a filmmaker, health, and science journalist and the author of the New York Times bestselling book Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life. He is also the host of the #1 iTunes health podcast The Genius Life. Max is excited to release his sophomore book, The Genius Life: Heal Your Mind, Strengthen Your Body, and Become Extraordinary, a lifestyle guide to living happily and healthily with proven, research-based lifestyle tactics, which we dig into more throughout this episode.
This episode is brought to you by Lumen, Thrive Market, and Farmacy.

Why Big Food Spends Millions Every Year in Washington
We need to transform our food system and address one of the biggest threats to our well-being: our lack of a coordinated and comprehensive food policy. The outside influence that industrial food and agriculture lobbyists have on our policies encourages a food system that engenders disease. Lobbying power in Washington is rarely in the best interest of the public, supporting food and agriculture policies that undermine public health, harm the environment and increase private profits for Big Food. Big Food and Big Ag spend millions of dollars in Washington every year for the power to block policies that hurt their bottom lines and promote policies that make them money, whether or not it’s harmful to our society or the environment.
On this week’s mini-episode, Dr. Mark Hyman talks about the dirty politics of Big Food, how that influences our government food policies, and why we need to change it. Learn more about these topics and the undeniable harm our food system is doing to human health and to the environment or climate in Dr. Hyman’s new book, Food Fix. foodfixbook.com

Is An Underactive Thyroid To Blame For Your Mysterious Symptoms? with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
The thyroid tends to be an underappreciated organ, but despite being a small gland it has massive implications for your health. While thyroid disease can occur in various forms, one of the most common is called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the thyroid gland and diminishes its ability to create precious hormones—ones that impact every cell of the body. Hashimoto’s is the leading cause of hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) in the US and roughly 14 million people in the US are struggling with this diagnosis, with women at much higher risk, being 7 to 8 times more likely than men to get it.
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to review patient cases in which thyroid issues were treated.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. In this episode, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Boham discuss:
Symptoms of hypothyroidism which can include sluggishness in the morning, poor concentration and memory, low-grade depression, dry skin, hoarse voice, thinning hair, coarse hair, being very sensitive to cold and having cold hands and feet, low body temperature, muscle pain, weakness or cramps, low sex drive, fluid retention, high cholesterol.
Evaluating thyroid health by testing thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels as well as free T3, free T4, thyroid antibodies, reverse T3 testing, and DIO2 gene testing.
Looking for associated problems such as gluten intolerance, food allergies, and heavy metals, as well as deficiencies of vitamin D, selenium, vitamin A, zinc, and omega-3 fats.
Choosing foods that offer nutritional support for your thyroid, such as
Eggs, sunflower seeds, whole grains, and brazil nuts. Just 1-2 brazil nuts a day can give your body all of the selenium it needs.
Seafood and sea vegetables (such as nori, seaweed, and iodized salt) which are rich in iodine.
Zinc-rich foods such as oysters, beef, poultry, beans, nuts, and seeds.
Avoiding raw cruciferous vegetables and GMO soy. Instead, steam or cook cruciferous vegetables and eat non-GMO, whole food soy.
Implementing lifestyle practices to support thyroid health such as reducing stress.
Using supplements and medication to support thyroid health.

How Your Free Will And Data Are Being Hacked By Micro-Targeting Of Your Personality with Andy Russell
When I was growing up we had news sources we could trust. Under The Fairness Doctrine, news on the radio, TV, and in print was partial and fair. But in 1987 during the Reagan administration, this was repealed, leading to alternative media and more misinformation than ever before. And now with the internet, we are truly in the wild west of sharing information, collecting data, and trying to maintain privacy. Big companies take advantage of that from all angels with their marketing, which is now ultra-targeted (and often in ways you wouldn’t even be able to recognize).
Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sit down with Andy Russell to talk about what data really means, who has yours, how they got it, and how they use it. Andy is a digital media, ad-tech, marketing-tech, and data science innovator and pioneer as well as a self-taught Behavioral Economist. He has invested in, incubated, or run over 50 technology companies, including Daily Candy, Thrillist, Tasting Table, Idealbite, PureWow, Zynga, Betaworks, Business Insider, Sailthru, RapLeaf and LiveRamp, SpongeCell, AdRoll, and Bounce Exchange. He is the Founder and Chairman of Trigger Media, InsideHook, and Fevo.

What Could We Do If We Weren’t Paying So Much On Healthcare?
It has been estimated that over the next 35 years, it's going to cost our society $95 trillion to address chronic disease. And not only is this affecting us economically, but our overall quality of life is decreasing. Imagine what we could do If we didn't have to spend as much money as we are currently spending on chronic disease. We would have enough money for other important things such as providing free education and healthcare. We could bring people up out of poverty, end social injustice, restore the environment, and help fund the reversal of climate change.
By addressing the overall dysfunctions in the food system, we can solve these problems. The solutions exist and they will call on a lot of us to fix it—multiple sectors and stakeholders from citizens and consumers to businesses and farmers, to policymakers in every level of government, including city and state to nonprofits, philanthropists, scientists. By coming together we can transform the food system.
Dr. Hyman speaks to all this and more in this mini-episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. He also outlines the problems and the solutions in his new book, Food Fix. foodfixbook.com

Only A Few Companies Control Our Entire Food System
Research has shown that for every 10% of your diet that comes from ultra-processed food, your risk of death goes up by 14%. Yet 60% of American diets are made up of ultra-processed food. And though the government tells us to eat more fruits and vegetables, existing food policy subsidizes thousands of acres of corn, soy, and wheat that are turned into processed junk food, while only 2% of our farmland is used to grow fruits and vegetables. In fact, if everybody ate the government-recommended amounts of vegetables and fruits, there actually wouldn’t be enough to go around.
Part of what is driving these issues is that there is a major monopoly when it comes to seeds. Just a handful of companies control the majority of what and how crops are grown. We have to change our agricultural policies.
Dr. Hyman dives into these topics and more in this mini-episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. He also outlines the problems and the solutions in his new book, Food Fix. foodfixbook.com

How We Are Poisoning Our Children with Harriet Washington
Racism is still rampant in our country, and it might exist in places you didn’t expect it. For example, Black and Brown populations are at a higher risk of exposure to environmental toxins and have less access to high-quality medical care or clinical medical studies on their specific populations.
This is a major problem that can’t be ignored. And it’s hugely impacting our economy and the success of future generations in multiple ways. Every year we spend 50 billion dollars and lose 23 million IQ points to lead toxicity alone, which affects people of color the most, regardless of social class and income level.
Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy I sit down for an important conversation with Harriet Washington about these issues. Harriet has been the Shearing Fellow at the University of Nevada's Black Mountain Institute, a Research Fellow in Medical Ethics at Harvard Medical School, a senior research scholar at the National Center for Bioethics at Tuskegee University, and a visiting scholar at DePaul University College of Law. She has held fellowships at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Stanford University. She is the author of Deadly Monopolies, Infectious Madness, and Medical Apartheid, which won a National Book Critics Circle Award, the PEN/Oakland Award, and the American Library Association Black Caucus Nonfiction Award. Her new book, A Terrible Thing to Waste, is a “powerful and indispensable” looks at the devastating consequences of environmental racism—and what we can do to remedy its toxic effects on marginalized communities.

What To Eat For Better Health
Eleven million people die every year from a bad diet. In America, six out of ten Americans have a chronic disease; four out of ten have two or more chronic diseases. And this is not just an American problem. Eighty percent of the world's chronic disease and obesity is in the developing world. We know that food is driving the majority of this death and disease but no one is really talking about it.
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman explores the global chronic disease crisis being driven by food and the food system. He also breaks down the principles of his “Pegan” diet, a middle ground between vegan and Paleo, focused on whole-foods; primarily colorful, high-fiber vegetables like kale, cauliflower, peppers, and radishes; healthy fats like extra-virgin olive oil and avocados; some low-glycemic fruits like blueberries and blackberries; free-range meats and eggs, used more like condiments than as the star of the plate; anti-inflammatory nuts and seeds, and flavorful herbs and spices.

Mark Hyman, M.D.: The impact of the food system on our health and the environment
In this episode, Mark Hyman, M.D., director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine and the author of Food Fix, discusses that if we can fix the food system, we can solve many big problems—namely the chronic disease/obesity epidemic, the rising costs of healthcare, as well as the big problems facing the environment. Mark first briefly lays out the health consequences of processed food with a focus on the gut microbiome. From there, Mark discusses the environmental consequences of industrial farming and lays out how we can affect change on the individual level, through policy and regulations, and perhaps most importantly through regenerative agriculture. Additionally, Mark talks about the potential health risks of consuming GMO foods, herbicides, and other chemicals used in industrial farming as well as the environmental consequences, such as the loss of soil, caused by those same fertilizers and methods of farming.
We discuss:
The negative consequences of the existing food environment [3:46];
What makes processed food so unhealthy? [9:21];
The gut microbiome: Inflammation from gut permeability and how to measure gut health [18:51];
Steps to fixing a bad gut—The Five R’s [24:51];
Some staggering health statistics, and which races might be more genetically susceptible [27:36];
An argument for government regulations and policies to fight back against a massive food industry with unlimited resources (and what we can learn from the tobacco story) [29:21];
Industrial farming and climate change: The degradation of soil and use of fertilizer [42:06];
Regenerative agriculture: Could it be the answer to food waste, our health problems, and the environment? [52:06];
Comparing the Impossible Burger to regeneratively raised beef [1:06:21];
GMO and Roundup—The potential health risks of consuming GMO foods sprayed with Roundup (glyphosate) and other herbicides and pesticides [1:08:36];
How the livelihood of farmers are being affected by big ag companies and the current industrial farming system [1:16:51];
The loss of biodiversity in our food, and what “organic” really means [1:19:21];
What can people do on the individual level to protect themselves as well as affect change to the toxic food system? [1:25:21];
What role does the USDA play in this “toxic” food environment and how do we fix it? [1:30:36];
The top 3 changes Mark would make if he was “food czar” [1:35:36];
Mark’s rebuttal against the argument that it’s best for the environment if we stop farming animals and move to a fully plant-based diet (and his argument for “agriculture 2.0") [1:36:51];
What is Mark’s overall mission with the work that he’s doing? [1:40:51];
Bread in the US vs. Europe: Why does bread (and wheat products) taste different and potentially cause less health problems in Europe versus the US? [1:42:21]; and
More.

Do We Need A Soda Tax?
How can we reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages?
There are efforts globally around the world looking at soda taxes as a solution for bringing down the consumption of foods that we know cause obesity and chronic disease. When those taxes are paired with incentives for eating healthy food, it's a win-win for everybody. Consuming more healthy food and less soda creates more productivity, lower healthcare costs, and less chronic disease. Yet we see organizations such as the American Beverage Association spending millions of dollars fighting soda taxes. It’s obvious that they wouldn't spend that kind of money if they didn't think they would lose profits from a soda tax. Dr. Hyman talks about all this and more in this mini-episode.

Why We Need To Fix Our Food System with Mark Hyman
Is it possible to create a food system that promotes health, not disease? One that regenerates ecosystems, reverses climate change and ensures no one, least of all the poorest in society, is endangered?
My guest on this week’s podcast believes it is. He is functional medicine doctor and New York Times bestselling author, Dr Mark Hyman. Mark and I talk about everything from how processed food is addictive by design, to the powerful role good nutrition, from real food, could have in hospitals, schools and prisons. We discuss why soil depletion from intensive farming is one of the biggest drivers of climate change – and why that vegan burger may not be the environmentally friendly option.
Despite the serious subject matter of this conversation, I’m sure you’ll come away feeling hopeful. Mark doesn’t simply highlight the problems we’re facing. He identifies the ‘fix’, providing practical, positive solutions. It’s a call to action that we can all do our bit to answer.

How To Fix Our Food System To Save Humans And The Planet
It’s time we stopped thinking about the way we eat only in terms of our health—we need to recognize the global impact of food. We need to eat in a way that combines good science with common sense. We need to not just include our health in the equation but also the biodiversity of the planet and our ability to grow food for future generations. So how do we do that? We’ve all been told we should go vegan to save the planet, but even if you don’t eat animals conventional agriculture kills 7 billion animals a year through habitat destruction. Not to mention, massive amounts of greenhouse gases are emitted to produce processed soy foods even if you completely avoid beef. Then people preach Paleo or keto but eat lots of factory-farmed meat, which also produces massive amounts of greenhouse gases, and is not something you want to put in your body.
Our food system is fundamentally flawed. That’s why I wrote my new book Food Fix that just hit shelves yesterday! To share all the solutions for creating a food system that helps both our bodies and the planet thrive. I’m really excited to tell you more about it. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy we’re sharing part two of the conversation we started last week, with my good friend and business partner Dhru Purohit as the host. We dig into the problems that led me to write Food Fix and how we can all take action starting today.

Why Do Our Tax Dollars Support Unhealthy Food?
U.S. taxpayers are footing the bill for the growing of processed foods (through agricultural subsidies for the raw materials of processed food—namely wheat, corn, and soy), and for providing the poor quality processed food and soda to the poor (through our food stamps program). Yet the federal government has repeatedly denied cities and states the right to enact basic policy reform measures, despite evidence to show that incentivizing healthy food and disincentivizing unhealthy food has been proven effective.
And it is not just bureaucrats who have opposed policy change. Many anti-hunger groups and national food banks, like the Food Research Action Center, or FRAC, have used their political influence to resist efforts to ban sugary drinks from the food stamp program, or SNAP.
In this mini-epissode, Dr. Hyman examines three government agencies that are promoting unhealthy foods and how a change in food policy could shift our health and the health of our communities and planet. Learn more in Dr. Hyman's new book, Food Fix. foodfixbook.com

America's Eating Habits And The Rise Of Fast Food Around The World
Sales are going down for soda and processed food in the US and Europe, but they're dramatically rising in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East, and it's not by accident. It's by design.
The globalization of our processed industrial food has allowed Big Food and Big Agriculture to flood the world with disease causing products. Food companies are transforming local diets, uprooting healthy traditional foods that people have been eating for centuries, and replacing them with ultra-processed frankenfoods. It's a huge problem.
Dr. Hyman dives in to the topic of globalized junk food and much more in this mini-episode. You can also learn more about these topics in Dr. Hyman's new book, Food Fix. www.foodfixbook.com

How Our Food System Harms Humans And The Planet
The way we grow food now is destroying our ability to grow it in the future. And the way we’re growing it now is making us sicker and more broke than ever before. Food is our #1 killer, even more so than smoking and guns.Our government supports the overproduction of the top crops for processed foods—corn, soy, and wheat—and Big Food reaps the benefits by turning them into sugary, starchy, highly addictive foods that cause chronic diseases. Diseases that are killing us and could be prevented.
This all comes down to our food system. The way food is grown, transported, processed, consumed, and wasted in our country is contributing to these problems and so much more—especially some of our most urgent ones like climate change. That’s why I wrote my new book Food Fix: How to Save Our Health, Our Economy, Our Communities, and Our Planet—One Bite at a Time. And today on The Doctor’s Farmacy I’m excited to trade places and be the interviewee with my good friend, business partner, and host of The Broken Brain Podcast, Dhru Purohit. When I got very sick decades ago, I took on the mission to use Functional Medicine to help myself and my patients get over needless suffering. How The Food Industry Manipulates Public Opinion, Science, And Government
Money is corrupting science, our government’s food policies, and the media. So where is this money coming from? There is a multi-trillion dollar global food industry that is growing, processing, manufacturing, marketing, and serving food like substances that are making us sick and fat. They are cheap to make and rake in big profits for ”Big Food” which is furiously promoting false science. And many of the nutrition myths that are prevalent today were spread like propaganda by the food industry.
Taxpayers are footing the bill for the growing of processed foods (through agricultural subsidies for the raw materials of processed food—namely wheat, corn, and soy), and for providing the poor quality processed food and soda to the poor (through our food stamps program). Then, we also pay for the costs of obesity and chronic disease caused by that food through Medicaid and Medicare. Not to mention the costs of soil degradation, depletion of our water supplies, climate change, and the widespread damage to humans and ecosystems from pesticides. This is because the food industry lobbyists push policies that use our tax dollars against us.
Dr. Hyman talks about all this and more in this mini-episode. Learn more about these topics and the actions we can take for more transparency from the government and corporations in Dr. Hyman's new book, Food Fix. FoodFixBook.com

It is a tool available to each of us, any time of day, any day of the week—we just have to take the time to listen and be willing to dig deeper. We are all unique when it comes to the precise ingredients we need to create health and at the end of the day, your body is the smartest doctor in the room—it will tell you what works and what doesn’t—if you simply observe and listen. Dr. Hyman explored this topic in interviews with Dr. Cynthia Li and Dr. Andrea Pennington.
Dr. Cynthia Li received her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She’s practiced as an internist in many settings, including Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, San Francisco General Hospital, and St. Anthony Medical Clinic serving the homeless. She currently has a private practice in Berkeley, CA and recently published her first book, Brave New Medicine: A Doctor’s Unconventional Path to Healing Her Autoimmune Illness.
Dr. Andrea Pennington is an integrative physician, acupuncturist, meditation teacher, and #1 international bestselling author. She received her Doctor of Medicine from Washington University School of Medicine, trained at Georgetown University Hospital, and received certification in Age Management Medicine with the Cenegenics Medical Institute. She created a holistic media platform, In8Vitality, to teach people how to blend ancient wisdom and modern science for enhanced vitality and life mastery. In her latest book, The Real Self Love Handbook, she explores her personal journey from depression to real self-love and how The Cornerstone Process, a 5-step self-discovery framework, is setting people free from the drama of past trauma.

A Fish Story: How To Improve Your Health While Protecting The Oceans with Paul Greenberg
Fish is one of the most nutritious food sources on the planet, especially when it comes to protein. But I’m usually scared to eat it. That’s because some seafood is at risk for toxicity that can harm our health, not to mention certain aquaculture methods are contributing to declining populations and even the acidification of our oceans. It’s not all bad, but it is complex. There are several important things we should think about in order to reap the health benefits from fish and act as environmental stewards at the same time.
To better understand seafood I sat down to talk with Paul Greenberg for this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Paul is the bestselling author of Four Fish, American Catch, and The Omega Principle. A regular contributor to the New York Times and many other publications, Mr. Greenberg is the writer-in-residence at the Safina Center, a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation and the recipient of a James Beard Award for Writing and Literature. He appears frequently on American and international radio and television programs and is the featured correspondent and co-writer of the 2017 PBS Frontline documentary The Fish On My Plate which, along with his TED talk, has reached millions of viewers.
This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox. ButcherBox is committed to humanely raised animals that are never given antibiotics or added hormones and since they take out the middleman you get extra savings. Right now ButcherBox has a special offer, get 2lbs of wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon and 2 grass-fed filet mignon steaks for free in your first order PLUS $20 off your first box - just go to ButcherBox.com/farmacy. Make sure you order before February 25, 2020 to take advantage of this great deal.

What Is The True Cost Of Your Food?
What is the true cost of what we’re eating to society, humans, to our natural resources, our natural capital and economies?
Looking past sticker price, what is the cost when we consider the benefit or burden that food has on your health, our environment, our climate, our farmworkers, the economy, and so much more.
Our food system drives the production of processed food which is the biggest killer on the planet, killing 11 million people a year. The biggest expenditure of the U.S. government is Medicare, and the Medicare trust fund is projected to run out of money by 2025 from dealing with the chronic illnesses caused by our food.
Our food system is also causing a loss of biodiversity, which is essential to growing nutritious food. Conventional farming practices that rely on agricultural chemical inputs, over-tilling, nitrogen fertilizers, monoculture, deforestation, and more, contribute to a massive loss of biological diversity on the planet. In fact, we’re currently experiencing the most extreme loss of life on Earth since the extinction of the dinosaurs. This has major consequences for our food security, as we have less fertile soil, a decline in pollinators essential for food production, and other direct food losses like fish from polluted waterways.
The good news is we can solve this issue together.
Dr. Hyman speaks to all of these topics in this episode featuring topics from his new book, Food Fix, which is out on February 25th. Visit FoodFixBook.com to learn more.

Could This Practice Be Our Saving Grace?
Regenerative farming takes a clear approach to agriculture, in that it’s not just about sustaining the land in its current state, it’s about bringing it back to its original, vibrant state. This creates greater biodiversity, more nutrients, stronger soils, and healthier food. Regenerative farming encompasses numerous practices that benefit the soil in which crops are being farmed. It is about being minimally invasive and supporting natural symbiotic relationships, so that bacteria in the soil, grazing cattle, and everything in between, are working together. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Miriam Horn as she shares the story of a midwest soil farmer who is using regenerative practices to restore his land back to its original Prairie state.
Miriam Horn works at the Environmental Defense Fund and is a New York Times best-selling author. Her books include, Rebels in White Gloves, Coming of Age with Hillary's Class, Wellesley '69, Earth: The Sequel, The Race to Reinvent Energy Stop Global Warming, which was co-authored with the Environmental Defense Fund president Fred Krupp, and Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman: Conservation Heroes of the American Heartland.

How Is The Food Our Kids Are Eating Affecting Their Behavior?
Our children’s future is threatened by an achievement gap caused in large part by their inability to learn on a diet of processed foods and sugar served in schools.
We are feeding our kids a diet that is making them anti-social in their behavior, promoting trouble focusing/ADD, and resulting not only in significant weight gain and health issues, but also in depression and mental health issues.
Most schools now only have deep fryers and microwaves and serve up industrial food-like-substances prepared by corporations, not by humans. Food companies also target children and minorities with billions in marketing of the worst “foods”.
We must put a stop to this.
Dr. Hyman talks about this issue and how how we can change the health of our children, ourselves, and our planet in his new book, Food Fix, out February 25. FoodFixBook.com

How Trauma Affects The Gut
We all deal with trauma at some point in life, but the good news is we can address it and come out stronger using the right tools. Since trauma is kept in both the mind and body, it makes sense that modalities that tap into the mind-body connection are successful to produce long-lasting healing. In this mini-episode Dr. Hyman is joined by world-renowned expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma, Jim Gordon, to discuss how trauma affects the gut and why nutrition is part of his trauma-healing protocol to help the entire body heal.
Dr. Jim Gordon is the author of The Transformation: Discovering Wholeness and Healing After Trauma and is a Harvard educated psychiatrist and a world-renowned expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma. He has worked with traumatized children and families in Bosnia, Gaza, Haiti, post-9/11 New York, and Parkland, among many other areas across the world facing tragedy and trauma. Dr. Gordon also works with veterans and active-duty military to address PTSD.

The Brain Science Behind Social Conflict And Depression with Drs. David and Austin Perlmutter
We’re living in a more divisive time than ever before. I’m not just talking about politics—we’re at aggressive odds over everything from diet (vegan versus Paleo) to sports and we’re even seeing an escalation in road rage. There’s actually a reason this is happening. We’re disconnected. Social media is actually isolating us; we ignore the importance of sleep and nature; stress is at epidemic proportions. These lifestyle disconnects cause structural and functional disconnects in the brain that lead to more divisive and angry behavior. Our ability to make good decisions pretty much goes out the window. But it’s not too late to reverse these negative effects. I was so excited to sit down with my good friends Drs. David and Austin Perlmutter on The Doctor’s Farmacy to talk about these modern challenges and how we can detox the brain to restore better decision making and overall health.
Dr. David Perlmutter is a Board-Certified Neurologist. His books have been published in 34 languages and include the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain, The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugar, with over 1 million copies in print. Dr. Perlmutter’s new book Brain Wash, co-written with his son Austin Perlmutter, MD, was just released on January 14, 2020. Dr. Austin Perlmutter is a board-certified internal medicine physician. His academic focus is on understanding the decision-making process, how it is influenced by internal and external factors, and how it changes our health and illness outcomes.
This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Brodo.
I’m always being asked how to source high-quality meat and seafood, so I want to share one of my favorite resources with you that I use to get quality protein in my own diet, ButcherBox. ButcherBox is currently offering listeners 2lbs of wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon PLUS $20 off your first box. Just go to ButcherBox.com/farmacy to take advantage of this great deal.

Why Neuroscientists Love Running
For decades we were taught there was no stopping cognitive and physical decline, now we know it’s possible to maintain a youthful brain and body into old age using accessible means. Given the right conditions, you can continue to thrive well into old age. In fact, the personality trait of “openness to experience” was a major predictor of good physical activity at age 75, because of a willingness to participate in athletics and try new things. That means, no matter what age you are now, keeping an open and adventurous mind and trying new types of movement in your own routine can help you stay active and healthy as you get older. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with brain health experts Dr. Marwan Sabbagh and Dr. Daniel Amen, and age management medicine expert Dr. George Shapiro about the tools available to each of us to promote optimal health at any age.
Dr. Sabbagh is a board-certified neurologist and considered one of the leading experts in Alzheimer’s and dementia. He is on the editorial board for the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and BMC Neurology and is now editor in chief of Neurology and Therapy and is the author of The Alzheimer’s Answer: Reduce Your Risk and Keep Your Brain Healthy, and The Alzheimer’s Prevention Cookbook: 100 Recipes to Boost Brain Health. Dr. Sabbagh’s latest book, Fighting for My Life: How to Thrive in the Shadow of Alzheimer’s, was released last year.
The Washington Post called Dr. Daniel Amen the most popular psychiatrist in America and Discover Magazine listed his brain imaging research as the top neuroscience story for 2015. He is a double board-certified psychiatrist and ten-time New York Times bestselling author, with such blockbuster books as Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, Healing ADD, Memory Rescue, Change Your Brain, Change Your Grades, and The Daniel Plan, co-authored by Pastor Rick Warren and Dr. Mark Hyman. In March 2020, his book The End of Mental Illness will be published.
Dr. George Shapiro has been a practicing physician for 30 years, specializing in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and age management medicine. Dr. Shapiro was the recipient of the 10th Annual Alan P. Mintz, MD Award, for Clinical Excellence in Age Management Medicine, as he has become known nationwide as an expert in age management medicine, and leads one of the most prominent age management practices in the country as president of Cenegenics New York City. He has long been known as one of New York’s foremost cardiologists, specializing in regenerative medicine and improving longevity, including the genomics of cardiovascular disease and congestive heart failure.

Is It Possible To Be Vegan-Keto? with Dr. Ethan Weiss and Dr. Carrie Diulus
Despite what conventional medicine has told us, type 1 diabetes is not a sentence for a heavy reliance on insulin. For many people, a diet that carefully monitors carb intake can dramatically reduce blood sugar swings and reduce the amount of insulin needed.
Keto (or the ketogenic diet) has gotten a lot of buzz lately, and this fat-heavy very low-carb approach to eating is showing some promise for diabetics and many other metabolic diseases as well. With that being said, there is no perfect diet for everyone, and each person needs to find what works best for them. One of my guests on this week’s Doctor’s Farmacy podcast, Dr. Carrie Diulus, has found vegan keto is the best approach for managing her type 1 diabetes and maintaining a healthy weight. We’re also joined by Dr. Ethan Weiss, who’s been steadily in ketosis for about 2 years using a plant-heavy, mostly pescatarian keto approach.
This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and SomniFix.
Thrive Market has made it so easy for me to stay healthy, even with my intense travel schedule. Not only does Thrive offer 25 to 50% off all of my favorite brands, but they also give back. For every membership purchased, they give a membership to a family in need, and they make it easy to find the right membership for you and your family. You can choose from 1-month, 3-month, or 12-month plans. And right now, Thrive is offering all Doctor's Farmacy listeners a great deal, you’ll get up to $20 in shopping credit when you sign up, to spend on all your own favorite natural food, body, and household items. And any time you spend more than $49 you’ll get free carbon-neutral shipping. All you have to do is head over to thrivemarket.com/Hyman.
Most of us aren’t getting our best rest. But there is actually a proven solution I’ve found for getting high-quality rest, simply by helping you breathe through your nose instead of your mouth. They’re called SomniFix Strips. Breathing through your nose has so many benefits—it protects against mouth dryness and nasal congestion, boosts oxygen saturation for enhanced focus, and helps naturally produce nitric oxide that kills bacteria and supports immunity. SomniFix is now offering all Doctor’s Farmacy listeners 20% off of your order. Just go to somnifix.com, and use the code HYMAN20 at checkout.

Why Eating Fake Meat Won't Solve Our Climate Problem
Wendell Berry said, "To be interested in food but not in food production is clearly absurd."
We need to revolutionize the food system completely. We have as system that fuels destruction, not only of our own health, but the health of the planet and animals.
My new book, Food Fix, both defines the problems and maps out the policies, business innovations and grass roots solutions. And what we can each do to improve our health and the health of our communities and the planet.
I cannot cure obesity and diabetes in my office. It is cured on the farm, in the grocery store, in the restaurant, in our kitchens, schools, workplaces, and faith based communities. This book will show you how. If you care about your health and the health of your community and the planet, visit foodfixbook.com.

How To Feed Your Gut
There are so many angles we need to look at with gut health and they can tell us an amazing amount of information about the rest of the body. Our gut bacteria regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, our brain function and of course, our metabolism and weight. They are critical to our long-term health. In this mini-episode Dr. Hyman explores the role of the gut microbiome and how best to feed it with his colleagues at The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Todd LePine, Dr. George Papanicolaou, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham.
Dr. Dr. LePine’s goal is to help patients achieve vitality through focusing on optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders.
Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in August 2017.
Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center. Through her practice and lecturing, she has helped thousands of people achieve their wellness goals. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well, a topic she is passionate about as a breast cancer survivor.

Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones
Nobody wants to name the problem, but let’s call it what it is: social injustice is part of our healthcare system. Black and Hispanic people are far more likely to get sick and die from the 10 leading causes of death due to a range of factors, including lack of access and discrimination in our healthcare system and policies. When you consider that most treatments and drugs are only tested on white males, it’s clear we’re ignoring the unique wellness needs of so many other populations. And the result of these disparities gets passed down through generations. We need to work on solutions now. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I sat down with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones from Cleveland Clinic to talk about these issues and ways to create a new multi-cultural dynamic in healthcare.
Dr. Charles Modlin is a Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Urologist, Executive Director of Minority Health, and the Cleveland Clinic Physician Lead for Public Health. He founded and directs Cleveland Clinic’s Minority Men’s Health Center. Dr. Leonor Osorio has been on staff at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital practicing Internal medicine since 2001. She was instrumental in the opening of the Lutheran Hospital Hispanic Clinic, which connects patients to Spanish speaking physicians. Tawny Jones is an accomplished Administrator at the Cleveland Clinic who leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine.

Yet, we’re lagging behind almost every other country in health metrics, including life expectancy and infant mortality. That’s because we’re not being set up for success: The policies and systems we rely on for healthcare aren’t supporting prevention, education, and accessibility for all our communities. We are spending a massive amount of money on healthcare (1 of every 5 federal dollars) but we’re not spending on the social services to invest in lifestyle wellness that prevents disease in the first place.
This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sit down with Dr. Anand Parekh to talk about solutions to our country’s healthcare crisis and examine what’s already working. Dr. Parekh is the Bipartisan Policy Center’s (BPC) chief medical advisor, providing clinical and public health expertise across the organization, particularly in the areas of aging, prevention, and global health. Prior to joining BPC, he completed a decade of service at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). As a HHS deputy assistant secretary for health from 2008 to 2015, he developed and implemented national initiatives focused on prevention, wellness, and care management. He has spoken widely and written extensively on a variety of health topics and is the author of a new book entitled Prevention First – Policymaking for a Healthier America.
