Dr. Mark Hyman
We are seeing an ever-increasing burden of chronic disease, primarily driven by our food and food system. This is perpetuated by agricultural, food, and health care policies that don’t support health. We need to rethink disease and reimagine a food system and a health care system the protects health, unburdens the economy from the weight of obesity and chronic disease, protects the environment, helps reverse climate change, and creates a nation of healthy children and citizens. This podcast is a place for deep conversations about the critical issues of our time in the space of health, wellness, food, and politics. New episodes are released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. I hope you'll join me.

Fungus Among Us: Diagnosing And Treating Yeast Problems with Dr. George Papanicolaou
Fungus Among Us: Diagnosing And Treating Yeast Problem | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Athletic Greens
Yeast overgrowth, including but not limited to candida, is quite common and can be triggered by a number of things. These include a high-sugar diet; impaired immunity; use of drugs, like antibiotics, birth control pills, estrogen, and steroids; and psychological stress. The symptoms of yeast overgrowth vary from person to person and some people may require aggressive treatment, while others many need only simple changes to make a significant difference in their health.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the functional medicine approach to diagnosing and treating yeast imbalance. They also share specific cases in which they have treated patients for candida and other fungal problems.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

How Lead And Other Environmental Toxins Are Affecting Us
How Lead And Other Environmental Toxins Are Affecting Us | This episode is brought to you by Simple Mills
Eighty thousand toxic chemicals have been released into our environment since the dawn of the industrial revolution, yet very few have been tested for their long-term impact on human health. This has both major health and economic consequences. Every year we spend 50 billion dollars and lose 23 million IQ points to lead toxicity alone, which affects people of color the most, regardless of social class and income level. And you may be surprised to learn that there are many government policies and even sanctioned decisions to dump toxins that end up poisoning communities of color and stealing children’s cognition and health.
Dr. Hyman sat down with Harriet Washington to discuss how we are ignoring this massive health crisis and what can be done to fix it.
Harriet A. Washington has been the Shearing Fellow at the University of Nevada’s Black Mountain Institute, a Research Fellow in Medical Ethics at Harvard Medical School, a senior research scholar at the National Center for Bioethics at Tuskegee University, and a visiting scholar at DePaul University College of Law. She has held fellowships at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Stanford University. She is the author of Deadly Monopolies, Infectious Madness, and Medical Apartheid, which won a National Book Critics Circle Award, the PEN/Oakland Award, and the American Library Association Black Caucus Nonfiction Award.

If you or someone you know has had cancer, this episode is going to matter to you. And since the odds are now that 1 in 3 adults in the US will get cancer, this really is a topic that matters to all of us.
The school of thought around cancer used to be focused only on the genetic component. But we now know that our environment—the air we breathe, the food we eat, even our relationships—have an enormous cellular impact on our ability to prevent and treat cancer.
I’m excited to sit down with Dr. Jason Fung on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy to talk about his amazing work in the field of cancer research and why this environmental component should give us all hope.
Dr. Fung is a physician, author, and researcher. Dr. Fung is also the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes naturally with fasting. His latest book, The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery, was just released.

What Does Food Have To Do With COVID-19?
What Does Food Have To Do With COVID-19? | This episode is brought to you by Four Sigmatic
If we as a population were healthier (think less obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc.), the evidence supports that we’d be faring much better throughout this pandemic.
Unfortunately, in the United States, only 12% of us in the US are metabolically healthy, putting us at higher risk of worse outcomes from COVID-19. Of course, a major driver of chronic diseases and the risks they create is our food system. We can’t expect to be a resilient population if we aren’t feeding our bodies real food with real nutrients we can use to function optimally.
In this mini-episode, we revisit two conversations Dr. Hyman had with his colleagues Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian and Dr. Elizabeth Boham at the beginning of the pandemic about how food and nutrition are inextricably linked to COVID-19. Dr. Boham also shares how to use food as medicine for immune support.
Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian is a cardiologist, Jean Mayer Professor of Nutrition and Medicine, and Dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, the oldest and most renowned graduate school of nutrition in North America. He has authored more than 300 scientific publications on the dietary priorities to reduce cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity in the US and globally; and on evidence-based systems innovations and policies to effectively reduce these burdens.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

Can Regenerative Agriculture Really Heal Humans And The Planet? with Jeff Tkach
Can Regenerative Agriculture Really Heal Humans And The Planet? | This episode is brought to you by Essentia, Athletic Greens, and ButcherBox
The argument that is often made against organic farming is that it can’t feed the world. Opponents say it can’t be scaled to the level we need to feed our current and growing population, but the real data actually says otherwise. The Rodale Institute is leading the way when it comes to research in the area of regenerative agriculture. Their work over the last 40 years shows organic agriculture leads to equal or better yields than conventional (sometimes over 30% better) with less energy use and three to six times more profits for the farmer. And they’re not the only ones who’ve found this to be true—it’s been repeated in five different studies from various universities and the USDA.
Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m thrilled to sit down with Jeff Tkach to talk about the amazing work the Rodale Institute has done and is continuing to do to further the cause of regenerative agriculture.
This episode is brought to you by Essentia, Athletic Greens, and ButcherBox.

Getting To The Root Of And Getting Rid Of Heartburn And Reflux with Dr. Todd LePine
Getting To The Root Of And Getting Rid Of Heartburn And Reflux | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley
Most of us have experienced heartburn at one time or another, but for millions of people it is a chronic and painful condition. As a result, acid-blocking medications are among the top-selling drugs in America today. However, taking an acid blocker does nothing to address whatever is causing the heartburn and these drugs can have all sorts of negative side effects. Additionally, while acid blocking drugs block acid that can cause symptoms of heartburn and reflux, your body actually needs stomach acid to stay healthy. So, the key isn’t taking the drug. It’s finding the cause.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating heartburn and reflux. Together they discuss how to find the real causes of reflux and heartburn, get rid of them, and use the right foods, nutrients, and lifestyle therapies to heal the problem.
Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

Why Health Coaches Are Behavior Change Ninjas
Why Health Coaches Are Behavior Change Ninjas | This episode is brought to you by Swanwick
Most health plans, whether they’re about losing weight, exercising more, or quitting bad habits, aren’t designed to last. This is because they’re based on an incorrect assumption that all you need is willpower and motivation. In truth, we all need a support system to help guide us toward sustainable behavior and lifestyle change. And the reality is that the majority of healthcare actually happens outside of the doctor’s office.
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee and Chris Kresser about why behavior change recommendations from healthcare providers are largely ineffective, and why having the support of a health coach can make all the difference in achieving your health goals.
Dr. Rangan Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential medical doctors in the UK and hosts the most listened to health podcast in the UK and Europe, ‘Feel Better, Live More’. His first three books have all been #1 Sunday Times Bestsellers and his latest, Feel Better in 5, shows people how to transform their health in just 5 minutes. It has been a smash hit in the UK, selling almost 100,000 copies in just 7 months, and has just been published in the United States. Professor BJ Fogg, the world’s leading expert in human behavior, calls this book, "one of the best habit change programs he has seen—deceptively simple but remarkably effective.” Dr. Chatterjee regularly appears on BBC News and Television and has been featured in numerous international publications including The New York Times, Forbes, The Guardian and Vogue, and his TED talk, How To Make Disease Disappear, has been viewed almost 3 million times.
Chris Kresser M.S., L.Ac is the co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine, founder of Kresser Institute, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Cure and Unconventional Medicine. He is one of the most respected clinicians and educators in the fields of Functional Medicine and ancestral health and has trained over 1,500 clinicians and health coaches in his unique approach. His health coaching program, called ADAPT, is the one I recommend for my staff at Cleveland Clinic and he’s the guy I trust with my own health.

Free Happiness Hacks
Free Happiness Hacks | This episode is sponsored by Swanwick
We often fall into the trap of thinking that having more or better stuff will bring about happiness; the research, however, proves otherwise. Happiness doesn’t have to be something you have or you don’t—just like our health, it’s something we can work on. In fact, the acts of helping others and practicing gratitude are foundational to improving happiness. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman talks with Laurie Santos about science-based hacks for creating more happiness in your life, and even better, they don’t cost a thing!
Laurie Santos is a Professor of Psychology and the Head of Silliman College at Yale University, as well as the host of the critically acclaimed podcast The Happiness Lab. After observing a disturbing level of unhappiness and anxiety among her students, she began teaching a course entitled "Psychology and the Good Life," which quickly became the most popular course in Yale's history and has also reached almost 2 million people from all over the world online. Although she’s now best known as a "happiness expert,” Santos's research explores the much broader question of "What makes the human mind unique?" and often includes comparing the cognitive capacities of non-human animals to humans.

What Is The Best Approach To The Ketogenic Diet?
What Is The Best Approach To The Ketogenic Diet? | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox.
We have all heard a lot about the benefits of the ketogenic diet in recent years; it has been shown to be an effective tool for weight loss, controlling and reversing diabetes, and improving brain function and overall whole-body health. So how does it work? Is it necessary to eat lots of meat and dairy if you are keto? And do you need to be keto forever to reap its benefits?
Dr. Hyman explored these questions in his conversations with one of the leading voices in the Paleo/Primal and keto movements, Mark Sisson, and with Dr. Carrie Diulus, who has found a vegan-keto diet to be the best approach for her when it comes to managing type 1 diabetes and maintaining a healthy weight.
Mark Sisson is the founder of the popular daily health blog, Mark’s Daily Apple, godfather to the Primal food and lifestyle movement, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Keto Reset Diet. His latest book is Keto for Life, where he discusses how he combines the keto diet with a Primal lifestyle for optimal health and longevity. Mark is the author of numerous other books as well, including The Primal Blueprint. After spending three decades researching and educating folks on why food is the key component to achieving and maintaining optimal wellness, Mark launched Primal Kitchen, a real-food company that creates Primal/Paleo, keto, and Whole30-friendly kitchen staples.
Dr. Diulus is an orthopedic spine surgeon, vice chief of the medical staff, and director of the Spine Wellness Center at the Crystal Clinic, in Akron, Ohio. Prior to that, she was both a spine surgeon for the Center for Spine Health at the Cleveland Clinic and also a medical director in their IT department. Dr. Diulus’ surgical practice focuses on minimally invasive spine surgery. Her clinical interest involves strategies for improving patients’ musculoskeletal health and surgical outcomes by improving metabolic health with dietary and exercise strategies. She has type 1 diabetes and has published and is involved in ongoing research at Boston Children’s on the use of a low carbohydrate diet in the management of type 1 diabetes.

This episode is brought to you by Joovv, Thrive Market, and Farmacy
Since the 1800s, we have been led to believe that toilet paper does the job but, in reality, all it does is cost us money every month, kill millions of trees per year, and contribute to chronic infections. My guest on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, Miki Agrawal, is here to answer these questions and discuss her insights into creating disruptive innovations for a healthier planet! Why ADHD Is Not A Psychiatric Disorder Or Brain Disease with Dr. George Papanicolaou
Why ADHD Is Not A Psychiatric Disorder Or Brain Disease | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley and Farmacy
The rates of attention deficit disorder (ADD), today referred to as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), have skyrocketed in recent years. But what is ADHD? ADHD is just a name we give to people who share a collection of symptoms: They can’t focus or pay attention, they’re inattentive, and they are hyperactive. These are symptoms. So, what are the causes?
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the common drivers of ADHD, and why it is so important to identify and treat its causes, rather than its symptoms. They also share specific cases in which they have treated patients for ADHD.

In this conversation, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Papanicolaou discuss:
The prevalence of ADHD in our society
Understanding ADHD as a cluster of symptoms, rather than a psychiatric disorder
The most common drivers of ADHD, including genetics, environmental influences, diet and lifestyle
How improving gut health, and addressing food sensitivities can improve ADHD
Testing for toxins and heavy metals in the body, including lead, mercury, and arsenic
Patients with ADHD that Dr. Hyman and Dr. Papanicolaou have treated
The effectiveness of meditation for treating ADHD

What Are Zombie Cells?
What Are Zombie Cells? | This episode is brought to you by Perfect Keto
We used to think that aging is synonymous with decline but we’re now learning that this doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. We’re also learning that there are ways we can harness our body’s innate repair mechanisms to slow down, and even sometimes, reverse the aging process. One such way is to reduce the number of senescent--or zombie--cells that we have. So what are zombie cells, and how can we get rid of them? Dr. Hyman recently discussed this in his conversation with Dr. David Sinclair, Dave Asprey, and Max Lugavere.
Dr. David Sinclair is a professor in the Department of Genetics and co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School, where he and his colleagues study longevity, aging, and how to slow its effects. More specifically, their focus is on studying sirtuins—protein-modifying enzymes that respond to changing NAD+ levels and to caloric restriction—as well as metabolism, neurodegeneration, cancer, cellular reprogramming, and more. Among other awards, he was included in Time Magazine’s list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” and Time's “Top 50 in Healthcare.”
Dave Asprey is the founder and CEO of Bulletproof 360, creator of the global phenomenon Bulletproof Coffee, a two-time New York Times bestselling author, the host of the Webby award-winning podcast Bulletproof Radio, serial entrepreneur, and global change agent. By employing the principles of biohacking (a term added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in September of 2018 with Dave’s influence) Dave has lost over 100 pounds, upgraded his brain, learned to sleep more efficiently in less time, and become a more effective entrepreneur, husband, father, and overall human being. In this episode, he shares his top tips and tricks for being superhuman and living to be 180 or beyond.
Max Lugavere is a filmmaker, health, and science journalist and the author of the New York Times bestselling book Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life. He is also the host of the #1 iTunes health podcast The Genius Life. Max’s sophomore book, The Genius Life: Heal Your Mind, Strengthen Your Body, and Become Extraordinary, is a lifestyle guide to living happily and healthily with proven, research-based lifestyle tactics, which we dig into more throughout this episode.

How To Optimize Your Body’s Detoxification System with Maggie Ward
How To Optimize Your Body’s Detoxification System | This episode is brought to by Thrive Market and my Dr. Hyman’s Sleep Master Course
In a healthy body, the process of detoxification runs smoothly. But when we are toxic, the mechanism for detoxification in the liver gets sluggish, and certain toxins can remain active longer than we want or than our systems can handle. This makes us sick and impedes normal metabolism. It also causes fluid retention, bloat, puffiness, and more.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Maggie Ward to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to assessing your toxic load, and how certain foods, gut health optimization, and other lifestyle factors can enhance detoxification.
Maggie Ward, MS, RD, LDN, is the Nutrition Director at The UltraWellness Center. Maggie holds a master’s degree in Nutrition from Bastyr University which focuses on using whole foods for holistic Nutrition Therapy. In addition, she completed her requirements to become a registered dietitian at Westchester Medical Center in NY. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center team in 2008, Maggie worked at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York providing nutrition counseling to children and families dealing with HIV. She also taught at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan and other sites throughout New York City, teaching nutritionally focused cooking classes for children and adults. Much of her focus is on food allergies, digestive disorders, inflammatory conditions, Pediatrics and Sports Nutrition. Maggie has been counseling individuals, families, and business groups on therapeutic diets to address various health concerns for more than 15 years. Her ongoing clinical training through the Institute for Functional Medicine uses a systems biology approach when working with those who suffer from chronic and acute conditions to help them find their path to healing. She has a passion for cooking and reconnecting people with their potential to heal using whole, organic and local foods.

Why Food Should Be A Factor In Treating Mental Illness
Why Food Should Be A Factor In Treating Mental Illness | This episode is brought to you by Find My Formula
We know that our diet can have a major impact on mental health. Unfortunately, however, most medical education programs don’t include nutrition, so many psychiatrists and physicians, in general, aren’t as empowered as they should be to prescribe a healthy diet. Moreover, stigma around mental illness is still pervasive in our society and can keep people from feeling empowered that they can change their brain health and get the care they truly need. Dr. Hyman recently explored these topics with psychiatrists Dr. Daniel Amen and Dr. Drew Ramsey.
Dr. Daniel Amen is the founder of Amen Clinics. Amen Clinics has the world’s largest database of brain scans related to behavior, totaling more than 160,000 SPECT scans on patients from 121 countries. Dr. Amen’s research team has published more than 70 scientific articles. He is the lead researcher on the world’s largest brain imaging and rehabilitation study on professional football players. His research has not only demonstrated high levels of brain damage in players, but also the possibility of significant recovery for many with the principles that underlie his work. His team also published the world’s largest functional brain imaging study on how the brain ages with over 62,000 SPECT scans. He is a double board-certified psychiatrist and ten-time NY Times bestselling author, with such blockbuster books as Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, Healing ADD, Memory Rescue, Change Your Brain, Change Your Grades, and The Daniel Plan, co-authored by Pastor Rick Warren and Dr. Mark Hyman. His most recent book is The End of Mental Illness.
Dr. Drew Ramsey is not your average psychiatrist. A writer, farmer, and doctor who focuses on the connection between mental health and food, he is passionate about nutritional interventions and creative media to share a different way of thinking about the brain and mood. He is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and in active clinical practice in New York City. He also spends much of his time with his family, growing their own food, on a 127 acre organic farm.

Why Ice Water Immersion And Your Breath Is The Key To Health And Happiness with Wim Hof
Why Ice Water Immersion And Your Breath Is The Key To Health And Happiness | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Four Sigmatic
Frequent exposure to cold is linked to a number of different health benefits. Scientists have found evidence that exposure to cold speeds up metabolism, and reduces inflammation, swelling, and sore muscles. Many athletes use ice baths and other types of exposure to cold as a means to speed up recovery after physical exercise. Cold body therapy is also linked to improved quality of sleep, more focus, and even to an improved immune response.

How To Be A Food Activist In Your Own Kitchen with Vani Hari
How To Be A Food Activist In Your Own Kitchen | This episode is brought to you by Tushy, Perfect Keto, and Thrive Market
We live in a world where our food is making us sick, tired, and overweight. Big Food brands design their packaged products to be addictive, so we over consume unhealthy ingredients, including cheap additives that are banned in other countries. Product labels are deceiving, hiding risky chemicals that contaminate our food and tout approval from organizations we’re led to believe are protecting our health, but in reality are doing anything but that.
On this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I was so happy to talk to Vani Hari about how Big Food manipulates nutrition research, purposely makes their food addictive, and how we can regenerate our health by getting in the kitchen.
Named as one of the “Most Influential People on the Internet” by Time Magazine, Vani Hari is the revolutionary food activist behind foodbabe.com, co-founder of organic food brand Truvani, New York Times best selling author of, The Food Babe Way, and Feeding You Lies. She has led campaigns against food giants like Kraft, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Subway and General Mills that attracted more than 500,000 signatures, and led to the removal of several controversial ingredients used by these companies. Through corporate activism, petitions, and social media campaigns, Vani and her Food Babe Army have become one of the most powerful populist forces in the health and food industries.
Her drive to change the food system inspired the creation of her new company, Truvani, where she produces real food without added chemicals, products without toxins, and labels without lies. Vani has been profiled in the New York Times and The Atlantic, and has appeared on Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, CNN, The Dr. Oz Show, The Doctors, and NPR.

The Reemerging Field of Psychedelic Research
The Reemerging Field of Psychedelic Research | This episode is brought to you by Perfect Keto
Hallucinogens like lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin (a compound derived from certain species of mushrooms) were being researched in medicine as therapeutic agents before their recreational popularity boomed in the 1960s. Unfortunately, that era gave them a negative connotation and since then the research in medical psychedelics dramatically declined. Now, we are seeing a resurgence in interest for these types of therapies, and the research points to some positive benefits.
One of the most astounding things about using various compounds, like psilocybin, as medicine is the long-lasting and powerful benefits of a single dose. Dr. Hyman sits down for a conversation with Dr. Anthony Bossis, where he shares about his experience conducting psychedelic research.
Anthony P. Bossis, Ph.D. conducts FDA-approved clinical trials in the reemerging field of psychedelic research. He is a clinical psychologist and clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine investigating the effects of psilocybin, a naturally occurring compound found in specific species of mushrooms. Dr. Bossis was director of palliative care research, co-principal investigator, co-author, and session guide on the 2016 landmark study showing a significant reduction in emotional distress along with enhanced existential well being from a single psilocybin-generated mystical experience in persons with cancer.
Dr. Bossis is a supervisor of psychotherapy at Bellevue Hospital and co-founder and former co-director of the Bellevue Hospital Palliative Care Service and maintains a private psychotherapy practice in NYC.

How To Activate Nature’s Healing Potential with Zach Bush MD
How To Activate Nature’s Healing Potential | This episode is brought to you by Joovv and ButcherBox
The microbiome has now come to be seen as the foundation for our overall health. The gut microbiome contributes to our digestive, immune, and emotional health, so it plays a vital role in overall well-being.
Soil, like our gut, has its own microbiome, which supports the health of the plants growing in it. And just as our consumption of highly processed foods and overuse of antibiotics have destroyed key microbes in the human gut, we have also carelessly damaged the soil microbiome through overuse of chemical herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and fungicides, heavy plowing and tillage, and the failure to add organic matter back into the soil.
On this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I was happy to sit down and talk with Dr. Zach Bush about why the health of our soil microbiome is the single most potent factor determining how healthy—or unhealthy—we are. We discuss why we need to acknowledge soil as a major influence on the food system and our health, and most importantly what we can do to change soil composition for the better.
Dr. Zach is a physician specializing in internal medicine, endocrinology, and hospice care. He is an internationally recognized educator and thought leader on the microbiome as it relates to health, disease, and food systems. Dr. Zach founded Seraphic Group and the non-profit Farmer’s Footprint to develop root-cause solutions for human and ecological health. His passion for education reaches across many disciplines, including topics such as the role of soil and water ecosystems in human genomics, immunity, and gut-brain health. His education has highlighted the need for a radical departure from chemical farming and pharmacy, and his ongoing efforts are providing a path for consumers, farmers, and mega-industries to work together for a healthy future for people and the planet.

Cholesterol Is Not The Cause Of Heart Disease with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
Cholesterol Is Not The Cause Of Heart Disease | This episode is brought to you by Perfect Keto
We have all heard that the secret to living a long, healthy, heart disease-free life is lowering your cholesterol, but is that really true? The reality is, most of us have little understanding about our cholesterol levels in our blood and the whole topic is much more complicated than we thought. Moreover, the standard cholesterol testing is outdated because it doesn’t check for particle size and particle number, and this information is what is needed to tell what’s really going on with your cholesterol.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss why cholesterol is only one factor in determining your overall health. They also discuss the factors that influence your cholesterol and whether or not statin drugs are the most effective way to prevent heart attacks.
How diet, lifestyle, environmental influences, and genetics influence cholesterol
The role that insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, diabetes, and metabolic health play in heart disease and overall health

Currently, one in five Americans live with a mental illness, and these rates have been tracking alongside increases in metabolic disease. Yet, conventional psychiatric care does not typically include discussion of food or an assessment of metabolic dysfunction, obesity, or insulin resistance in the evaluation or treatment of mental health conditions.
On this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I was happy to sit down and talk with Dr. Shebani Sethi about the relationship between mental health and metabolic disease, and how we are gradually coming to understand that inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance may represent important root causes of many chronic brain illnesses, including many psychiatric disorders.
Dr. Shebani Sethi is a double board-certified physician in Obesity Medicine and Psychiatry. She is the Founding Director of Stanford University's Metabolic Psychiatry program and Silicon Valley Metabolic Psychiatry, a new center in the San Francisco Bay Area focused on optimizing brain health by integrating low carb nutrition, comprehensive psychiatric care, and treatment of obesity with associated metabolic disease.

Do Our Computers Know Us Better Than We Know Ourselves?
Do Our Computers Know Us Better Than We Know Ourselves? | This episode is brought to you by Perfect Keto
Studies have shown humans only actually remember 0.05% of our memories, whereas databases can remember it all! It’s a scary realization, but computers can know us in a way we don’t even know ourselves. We like to think we aren’t easily persuaded, but when companies know our likes, wants, needs, and purchase history it all adds up to an easier sale.
Earlier this year, Dr. Hyman sat down to discuss this topic with Andy Russell. Andy explains how big companies like Google and Facebook access and use our data. He also shares what we can do to maintain control over the content we see.
Andy Russell is a digital media, ad-tech, marketing-tech, and data science innovator and pioneer as well as a self-taught Behavioral Economist. He has invested in, incubated, or run over 50 technology companies, including Daily Candy, Thrillist, Tasting Table, Idealbite, PureWow, Zynga, Betaworks, Business Insider, Sailthru, RapLeaf and LiveRamp, SpongeCell, AdRoll, and Bounce Exchange. He is the Founder and Chairman of Trigger Media, InsideHook, and Fevo.

How Regenerative Agriculture Can Fix Our Health, Our Food System, And Our Planet with Gabe Brown
How Regenerative Agriculture Can Fix Our Health, Our Food System, And Our Planet | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and the Pegan Shake
It can be easy to forget where our food really comes from. The overflowing shelves in the supermarket may trick you into thinking food just appears. The reality is that strong healthy soils are the foundation for food production, and without them, we can’t survive.
That’s why we need to shift our agricultural focus from growing commodity mono-crops like soy, corn, and wheat into a diversified system that encourages soil health, biodiversity, and sustainability for future generations. This is what regenerative agriculture is all about.
On this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I was so happy to sit down and talk with Gabe Brown, one of the pioneers of the current soil health movement which focuses on the regeneration of our resources. Gabe and his family own and operate Brown's Ranch, a diversified 5,000-acre farm and ranch near Bismarck, North Dakota. The ranch consists of several thousand acres of native perennial rangeland along with perennial pastureland and cropland. Their ranch focuses on farming and ranching in nature's image.
The Browns holistically integrate their grazing and no-till cropping systems, which include a wide variety of cash crops, multi-species cover crops, and grass-finished beef and lamb. They also raise pastured laying hens, broilers, and swine. This diversity and integration has regenerated the natural resources on the ranch without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides. Gabe and Brown's Ranch have received many forms of recognition for their work, including a Growing Green Award from the Natural Resource Defense Council, an Environmental Stewardship Award from the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, and a Zero-Till Producer of the Year Award, to name a few. Gabe has also been named one of the twenty-five most influential agricultural leaders in the United States. Gabe recently authored the book Dirt to Soil, One Family’s Journey Into Regenerative Agriculture, and stars in the newly released Netflix movie, Kiss The Ground, which is about a revolutionary group of activists, scientists, farmers, and politicians who band together in a global movement of regenerative agriculture that could balance our climate, replenish our vast water supplies, and feed the world.

How Does Your Body Make Energy?
How Does Your Body Make Energy? | This episode is brought to you by Perfect Keto
If you think back to your early years of biology class, chances are you might recall learning about mitochondria, which are often equated to little energy factories. Mitochondria are the microscopic powerhouses hiding within most cells and they have huge consequences for our health. Damaged mitochondria can lead to a host of insults, including metabolic disease. Healthy mitochondria, on the other hand, can result in optimal aging.
Dr. Hyman discussed the topic of mitochondria, and how we can best support them in recent conversations with Dave Asprey and Dr. Todd LePine.
Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining my team at The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s goal is to help patients achieve vitality through focusing on optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders.

Heroes run toward danger rather than away from it, and Chef José Andrés is no stranger to disaster zones. Over the past few years, he has responded to several major crises. How To Break Through Loneliness
How To Break Through Loneliness | This episode is brought to you by Perfect Keto
Studies have shown that loneliness can be extremely detrimental to our health. Posing a higher health risk than smoking, loneliness can lead to inflammation and a host of other precursors to disease. And we know that loneliness does not only result from being alone; even those who live with others can feel lonely and isolated, meaning the quality of our relationships is extremely important to our health. While it might seem intimidating to branch out of loneliness, it can do wonders for your health, attitude, and mindset.
In Dr. Hyman’s recent conversation with Dr. Vivek Murthy, Dr. Murthy shares some of the common challenges that keep us stuck in a rut of loneliness, and he walks us through some really simple ways to become more connected.
Dr. Vivek Murthy served as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States between 2014-2017. As the Vice Admiral of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, he commanded a uniformed service of 6,600 public health officers globally. During his tenure, Dr. Murthy launched the TurnTheTide campaign, catalyzing a movement among health professionals to address the nation’s opioid crisis. He also issued the first Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health, calling for expanded access to prevention and treatment and for recognizing addiction as a chronic illness, not a character flaw.
In 2017, Dr. Murthy focused his attention on chronic stress and loneliness as prevalent problems that have profound implications for health, productivity, and happiness. His book Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World was just published in April 2020.

Do You Need To Take A Vitamin D Supplement?
Do You Need To Take A Vitamin D Supplement? | This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp
Vitamin D has a huge impact on the health and function of your cells. Among its many functions, vitamin D reduces cellular growth (which promotes cancer) and improves cell differentiation (which puts cells into an anti-cancer state). But what’s even more fascinating is how vitamin D regulates and controls genes. When we don’t get enough it impacts every area of our biology, because it affects the way our cells and genes function.
Your body makes vitamin D when it’s exposed to sunlight. The problem is that most of us aren’t exposed to enough sunlight or eating enough of the few natural dietary sources of vitamin D. The good news is that supplementing with vitamin D3 can be an effective way to reverse a vitamin D deficiency. However, it is important to test your vitamin D levels to assess your personalized needs before starting any supplementation.
Dr. Hyman recently spoke to this topic in his conversations with Max Lugavere and Dr. Elizabeth Boham.
Max Lugavere is a filmmaker, health, and science journalist and the author of the New York Times bestselling book Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life. He is also the host of the #1 iTunes health podcast The Genius Life. Max is excited to release his sophomore book, The Genius Life: Heal Your Mind, Strengthen Your Body, and Become Extraordinary, a lifestyle guide to living happily and healthily with proven, research-based lifestyle tactics, which we dig into more throughout this episode.
Simple Hacks To Feel Better In Five Minutes | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and Joovv
The vast majority of today’s health problems are rooted in our busy, modern lifestyles. So many people say they don’t have time for the gym, to overhaul their diet, to spend the quality time they want to with their loved ones—our wellbeing often gets added to a to-do list.
Trying to implement healthy lifestyle changes can be overwhelming for many people, but my guest on today’s podcast says that all it takes is 5 minutes a day to make a real difference in your health.
Dr. Rangan Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential medical doctors in the UK and hosts the most listened to health podcast in the UK and Europe, ‘Feel Better, Live More’. It has been a smash hit in the UK, selling almost 100,000 copies in just 7 months, and has just been published in the United States. Professor BJ Fogg, the world’s leading expert in human behavior, calls this book, one of the best habit change programs he has seen—deceptively simple but remarkably effective.” Dr. Chatterjee regularly appears on BBC News and Television and has been featured in numerous international publications including The New York Times, Forbes, The Guardian and Vogue, and his TED talk, How To Make Disease Disappear, has been viewed almost 3 million times.
All of us have made short-term changes before, but how do you get them to last? Dr. Chatterjee shares his plan, Feel Better in 5, which is based on three easy practices, which he calls, “health snacks.” Each one takes no more than 5 minutes to complete—short enough to be able to fit into your busy day, yet long enough to ensure you gain real benefits.

Getting To The Root Causes Of Why We Are All Tired with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
Getting To The Root Causes Of Why We Are All Tired | This episode is brought to you by Essentia
Twenty to thirty percent of patients visit their primary care physician with the chief complaint of fatigue; they're tired all the time and want to feel better. Unfortunately, conventional medicine rarely allows for physicians to spend enough time with patients to explore the many reasons someone might be experiencing fatigue. Functional Medicine, on the other hand, uses an extensive personal history to look at a patient’s patterns over his or her entire lifetime and connect the dots.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the common drivers of fatigue and the Functional Medicine approach to treating it.
Over twenty years ago, Europe banned genetically modified organisms (GMOs) while the United States went full steam ahead, especially with soybeans and corn. In fact, it’s estimated that about 75 percent of the food in our supermarkets contains genetically modified ingredients. The promise of GMO foods held lots of promise—they would produce high yields, solve our world hunger problems, and be insect resistant, thereby decreasing our dependence on toxic pesticides. But did GMOs live up to their promise? Dr. Hyman explored these topics in his interview with Ocean Robbins.
Ocean Robbins is the author of 31-Day Food Revolution: Heal Your Body, Feel Great, & Transform Your World. He serves as CEO and cofounder of the Food Revolution Network—one of the largest communities of healthy eating advocates on the planet, with more than 500,000 members. Ocean comes from a long line of food-lovers, though they didn’t all necessarily fit the same bill. His grandfather and great-uncle founded Baskin Robbins and his father walked away from the family fortune to pursue a career that promoted a cleaner and more nourishing diet. Ocean continues the legacy his father started by encouraging people to vote with their fork and think of the impacts our food choices have on the environment, socioeconomics, and of course health.

A Way Out Of Food Racism And Poverty with Karen Washington
A Way Out Of Food Racism And Poverty | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Bioptimizers
Food is a way to empower people and create change. It’s time for us to use it as a tool for changing racial injustice and helping Black, Brown, and low-income communities achieve better health, economic opportunities, and even generational legacies in the form of land ownership.
Many of us have heard the term “food desert” as a way to describe places where fresh, healthy food is not accessible within a certain distance. On this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, my guest, Karen Washington, takes this concept to a greater level with her coining of the phrase “food apartheid,” to really portray the overarching inequalities in our food system when it comes to the demographics of race, location, affluence, and economics.
Karen Washington is a farmer, activist, and food advocate. She is the Co-owner and Farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York. In 2010, Karen Co-Founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization supporting growers in both urban and rural settings. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the country, and in 2014 Karen was the recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award. Karen serves on the boards of the New York Botanical Gardens, SoulFire Farm, the Mary Mitchell Center, Why Hunger, and Farm School NYC.

A Simple Diet Experiment That May Solve Most Of Your Health Issues with Lisa Dreher
A Simple Diet Experiment That May Solve Most Of Your Health Issues | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley
Symptoms like bloating, brain fog, poor sleep, poor digestion, skin rashes, mood issues, hormonal issues, joint pain, and many, many others can all be caused by food sensitivities. Food sensitivities might affect you immediately or it might take a few days. This can make it difficult to determine what foods might be causing various problems. Eliminating specific trigger foods such as gluten, dairy, grains, sugar, alcohol, and caffeine for a duration of time is a way for your body to hit the reset button on your health. After following an elimination diet for a certain period of time, you can then strategically add foods back in to see how you tolerate them.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Lisa Dreher to discuss how they use elimination diets to identify and treat food sensitivities in their patients.
Lisa is a registered dietitian who got her undergraduate nutrition degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology and completed a dietetic internship through Cornell University. Lisa first worked in the acute care hospital setting and became a Clinical Nutrition Specialist working in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. At the same time, she pursued her Masters degree in Nutrition and Integrative Health from the Maryland University of Integrative Health and started practicing integrative and functional nutrition in private practice before joining UWC in 2015. She has since received additional training through the Institute for Functional Medicine.
Over the past 10 years, Lisa has delivered several public health lectures on the role of food as medicine and her work has been showcased in Reader’s Digest, on National Public Radio, and she was featured in the Broken Brain 2 series. She also developed the Digestive Health and Gut Microbiome training module for the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine practice group through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

How To Support The Next Generation Of Farmers
How To Support The Next Generation Of Farmers | This episode is brought to you by Four Sigmatic
The average age of a farmer in the United States today is 58 years old. And it’s been projected that about 40% of the continental United States’ farm and ranch acreage will have changed hands between 2015 and 2035. However, young people who are looking to get into farming are unfortunately faced with a number of barriers to entry, including difficulty accessing land, education, and financing. This is why it is so important that we begin to spur business innovation and create policy supports to bring in the next generation of farmers, and innovators in the food system.
Dr. Hyman explored these topics in three conversations he had last year with guests Kimbal Musk, Tobias Peggs, and Danielle Nierenberg.
Kimbal Musk is a chef, restaurateur, and philanthropist. His personal mission is to pursue an America where everyone has access to real food. He’s been named a Global Social Entrepreneur by the World Economic Forum and is the co-founder and Executive Chairman of three businesses—The Kitchen Restaurant Group, Big Green, and Square Roots—with real food missions that are rapidly growing across the US. The Kitchen Restaurant Group (with its three concepts Next Door, Hedge Row, and The Kitchen) serves real food at every price point and has created over a thousand mission-driven jobs. The restaurants source sustainably grown food from American farmers, stimulating the local farm economy to the tune of millions of dollars a year. Kimbal’s nonprofit organization, Big Green, builds permanent, outdoor Learning Garden classrooms in hundreds of underserved schools across America reaching over 350,000 students every day. His tech-enabled food company, Square Roots, builds urban farms in climate-controlled shipping containers with the mission to bring real food to people in cities around the world by empowering next-gen farmers.
Tobias Peggs is co-founder and CEO of Square Roots, the Brooklyn-based urban farming company known for changing the way people think about growing local food and training the country’s future generations of farmers. Previously, he led Aviary, a mobile photo editing company as its CEO until its acquisition by Adobe, and was also CEO at OneRiot, a social media analytics company, acquired by Walmart. Tobias grew up in England and has a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from Cardiff University.
Danielle Nierenberg co-founded the non-profit Food Tank in 2013 as an organization focused on building a global community for safe, healthy, nourished eaters. Prior to starting Food Tank, Danielle spent two years traveling to more than 60 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America, meeting with farmers and farmers’ groups, scientists and researchers, policymakers and government leaders, students and academics, along with journalists, documenting what’s working to help alleviate hunger and poverty, while protecting the environment at the same time.

Why Most Everything We Were Told About Dairy Is Wrong with Dr. David Ludwig
Why Most Everything We Were Told About Dairy Is Wrong | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and Tushy
There are so many myths when it comes to nutrition and health. One of the most prominent, that is still being supported by our government policies today, is that we need three servings of dairy a day to get enough calcium and achieve optimal wellness. We now have plenty of research to show us this just isn’t the case. Not to mention, upwards of 65% of the world’s population are lactose intolerant after infancy! Cow’s milk is not nature’s perfect food for human adults, despite what the lobbying efforts of the dairy industry say. On this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I was excited to sit down with Dr. David Ludwig, whose research I’ve followed for the past 20 years and has helped shape the way I practice medicine.
David S. Ludwig, MD, PhD is an endocrinologist and researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital. He holds the rank of Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Ludwig is co-director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center and founder of the Optimal Weight for Life program, one of the country’s oldest and largest clinics for the care of overweight children. For more than 25 years, Dr. Ludwig has studied the effects of dietary composition on metabolism, body weight, and risk for chronic disease. Described as an “obesity warrior” by Time Magazine, Dr. Ludwig has fought for fundamental policy changes to improve the food environment. He has been a Principal Investigator on numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and philanthropic organizations and has published over 200 scientific articles. Dr. Ludwig was a Contributing Writer at JAMA for 10 years and presently serves as an editor for The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and The BMJ. He has written 3 books for the general public, including the #1 New York Times bestseller Always, Hungry? Conquer Cravings, Retrain Your Fat Cells, and Lose Weight Permanently.

The One Factor That Determines 90% Of Your Risk For Disease with Dr. Todd LePine
The One Factor That Determines 90% Of Your Risk For Disease | This episode is brought to you by Uqora
You’ve probably never heard of the exposome, yet it’s one of the most important things that determines your health, your gene expression, and your risk of disease. The exposome is the term for the sum total of all the exposures in our lifetime, starting in utero. These exposures include everything from the food we eat, environmental toxin exposure, the air that we breath, the water we drink, heavy metal exposure, and even our thoughts and emotions.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to the exposome, and together they explore how they assess the way that patient exposomes may be contributing to their overall health.
Why Muscle Is Key For Longevity
Why Muscle Is Key For Longevity | This episode is brought to you by Hairprint
You may be surprised to learn that muscle is our body’s largest organ. And unfortunately, the natural loss of muscle mass and strength as we age is associated with all-cause mortality and linked to the incidence of many chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and stroke, hypertension, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. For these reasons, it’s especially important to maintain muscle mass through exercise and eat more protein as we age. But what kinds of protein, and how much do we need?
Dr. Hyman explores these questions in his conversation with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, and they explain why muscle is key for longevity.
Dr. Gabrielle Lyon is an integrative physician who completed her fellowship in Nutritional Sciences & Geriatrics at Washington University, St. Louis. She is board-certified in Family Medicine and completed her undergraduate work in Human Nutrition Vitamin & Mineral Metabolism. Dr. Lyon works closely with current and retired Special Operations military operators as a part of the Task Force Dagger Foundation. In addition, her practice services professional athletes, executives, and anyone looking to level up their health. Her Manhattan-based practice focuses on combining the physical with mental optimization.
