Political Leadership Lessons From Mayor G.T. Bynum & Rusty Bailey

Political Leadership Lessons From Mayor G.T. Bynum & Rusty Bailey

One of the problems with politics today is we tend to only focus on what is happening on a national level, which is currently quite dramatic, dysfunctional, and extremist. However, the political decisions that are being made at the local level are the ones that actually impact our day to day life. Today, Ryan talks with Rusty Bailey (Democrat), the former Mayor of Riverside, California as well as G.T. Bynum (Republican), the current Mayor of Tulsa, Oklahoma to dive into what it means to be a successful leader in politics. Both share their journey to politics, political leadership lessons from history, how the Stoics were involved in politics, and the issues they are working to find solutions for. Follow G.T. Why Amanda Knox Turned To Stoicism After Being Wrongfully Convicted of Murder

Why Amanda Knox Turned To Stoicism After Being Wrongfully Convicted of Murder

In November, 2007, Amanda Knox was 20 years old and had been studying abroad in Italy when her roommate, Meredith Kercher, was brutally murdered. Around the world, all eyes (and cameras) were on Amanda as the main suspect and she was wrongfully convicted of the murder. After spending four years in an Italian prison, the verdict was overturned and Amanda was able to come home to the United States. In 2013, a new trial was ordered by the Italian court and ultimately Amanda was found not guilty a second time. Then just a couple of months ago in June, she had to return to the same courtroom for a re-trial on charges of slander.Today, Amanda talks with Ryan about how being introduced to Stoicism and The Obstacle is the Way completely changed her perspective while navigating her unimaginable situation.  “In the eyes of other people, I was the girl accused of murder and I felt like they didn't really say anything true or real about me as a human being. And I had to really think about that idea, the obstacle is the way, to understand how that played a role in my life. It is a very defining part of my life, but also how I've reacted to it is even more defining about my life and how I've chosen to exercise my agency” - Amanda KnoxFollow Amanda Knox on Instagram: @AMamaKnox and on X: @AmandaKnox🎙️ Listen to Amanda’s Podcast: Labyrinths with Amanda Knox | Apple Podcasts, Spotify📚 Pick up a copy of Amanda’s memoir: Waiting to Be Heard📕 Check out our premium leather edition of The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday at dailystoic.com/obstacleleather✉️ Want Stoic wisdom delivered to your inbox daily? Can You Do It With A Broken Heart? | Anything Can Be An Advantage

The Stoics were people that felt, but they also understood that life, especially leadership, requires being able to balance these emotions with the responsibilities and duties each of us have. We are the creators of our anxiety. Which means we can also be the ones to do something about it. In Meditations, Marcus Aurelius put it like this: “Today I escaped from anxiety. Behind every great man and woman of history, there's usually a library or a bookstore that has been formative in their life. Not only have bookstores shaped influential leaders, but also the ideas and movements that have altered society. Stoicism originated in a bookstore, Benjamin Franklin’s bookstore influenced the American Revolution, and countless bookstores have been the backbones of activist movements. Evan Friss, author of The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore, talks with Ryan in today's episode about the unchanged charm of bookstores over centuries, the impact of Amazon on the book industry, the role of libraries, and the romantic yet challenging undertaking of running a bookstore. 📚 The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore by Evan Friss is out now! Unlocking Self-Discovery Through Shadow Work Journaling | Keila Shaheen

Journaling allows us to release our thoughts and feelings, but shadow work journaling takes it to a much deeper level. Shadow work is based on Carl Jung's idea that we all have a “shadow self” which holds our repressed thoughts, feelings, and experiences. This side of us is hidden in our subconscious, but impacts how we show up in all areas of life. Keila Shaheen, author of the viral sensation The Shadow Work Journal, joins Ryan to talk about what shadow work is, why shadow work journaling reveals hidden aspects of yourself, and how the Stoics spoke about the benefits of journaling. Keila also talks about navigating the unexpected viral success after self-publishing The Shadow Work Journal and what she has personally discovered about her own “shadow self”. 📚 Grab a copy of The Shadow Work Journal by Keila ShaheenKeila is also the creator of Zenfulnote which is a variety of books, journals, and a card game | https://zenfulnote.com/You can follow Keila on Instagram @keilashaheen and on X @zenfulnote🎙️ Former NFL player, Tony Gonzalez, introduced Ryan to The Shadow Work Journal - listen in to Tony’s interview on The Daily Stoic! 📓 Pick up a signed edition of The Daily Stoic Journal: 366 Days of Writing and Reflection on The Art of Living: https://store.dailystoic.com/✉️ Want Stoic wisdom delivered to your inbox daily? The Key Media Strategies for Maximum Impact | Gary Vaynerchuck

Gary Vaynerchuck, better known as Gary Vee, has always had his finger on the pulse of digital media. His content pyramid is the secret behind how some of your favorite online creators built their platform and is the playbook used by the biggest digital marketing agencies in the world. Gary joins Ryan Holiday at the Daily Stoic studio to talk about creating compelling content, the significance of subjective opinions in an online world, the evolving nature of people’s attention spans, what the current “parenting pandemic” is, and more.Gary Vaynerchuk is a serial entrepreneur and serves as the Chairman of VaynerX, the CEO of VaynerMedia, and the Creator and CEO of VeeFriends. His latest project is a children's book, Meet Me in the Middle: A VeeFriends Book! The book uses a unique, two-in-one, flip-the-book-around format that encourages young readers (and their parents) to see how different the world looks from another point of view. Based on two VeeFriends characters, Eager Eagle and Patient Pig, it is a fun and engaging story about how real success comes from seeing how the other side does it.Grab your own copy of Meet Me in the Middle: A VeeFriends BookYou can also check out Gary’s book: Day Trading Attention: How to Actually Build Brand and Sales in the New Social Media World🎙️Listen to Gary Vee’s first episode on the Daily Stoic podcast: Gary Vaynerchuk on Stoicism, Soft Skills, and Becoming Your Best Self🎥 Tune into Ryan’s interview on the GaryVee Audio Experience: Unpacking the Secrets of Successful Parenting with Ryan Holiday Connect with Gary Vee on Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok: @GaryVee✉️ Want Stoic wisdom delivered to your inbox daily?
