Today’s guest is Danielle Schroeder, an Associate Engineer for Pennoni Associates in Philadelphia and an honoree of the ASCE’s 2021 New Faces of Civil Engineering. She first learned about the field while attending an engineering girl’s camp as a high school student, and then went on to graduate with both a Bachelor and Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Drexel University. After graduation, she has worked on a wide range of projects, including retrofitting the Burlington-Bristol Bridge. As a huge advocate for and leader of STEM outreach events among young people, particularly young women from kindergarten to 12th grade, Dani talks about the importance of such events and how people can get involved with them. We’ve all at some point wondered how the process to become a civil engineer in other countries goes and what requirements and examinations people need to meet and pass in order to get the desired initials, whether they are P.E, C.Eng., etc. Today, we’ll take a closer look at how this process takes place in the UAE, as well as a deep dive into a really important topic most civil engineers simply, and mistakenly, ignore: Mental Health. Abdulrahman Atif and Ghanim Kashwani are two civil engineers from the UAE who have been friends since the old college days, and they’re the hosts of the Civil Engineering Vibes Podcast. They both got their bachelor's degrees from the American University of Sharjah, and while Abdulrahman got his Masters from Heriot-Watt University, Ghanim got his Ph.D. from the same university. Focused on the ever-changing modern world, the goal of their show is to talk about topics most universities nowadays do not have in their core curriculum but that should be addressed, such as entrepreneurship, the need for programming skills, as well as career and personal development. As it does every year, the NCEES organization has already released its 2020 Annual Report, in which it provides an overview of the initiatives it has been involved in, a roadmap of what happened in the previous year, and where it’s headed looking forward. Throughout our lives, we’re always trying to overcome the hurdles of reaching the next level, whether it’s going from junior to senior in college, getting the PE license after passing the FE, or even going from one job position to the next. The real challenge, however, lies in how we frame the situations we need to go through in order to reach such a new level and not really the situations themselves. That’s called the Super Mario Effect. First mentioned by the Youtuber Mark Rober during his widely famous TEDx Talk, the Super Mario Effect basically says that we should keep our focus on saving the princess (our ultimate goal) instead of the traps and pits that can hold us back and force us to try again. In his experiment for this talk, Mark found out that the group of people who were not penalized for their failures and were in fact inspired to keep trying despite their shortcomings showed a 16% higher pass rate when compared to the group of people who got penalized for every failure they made. By elaborating on this and explaining why we should see failure in a completely different light, Isaac presents the tips we can use to make the journey of studying for the FE and PE exams not only a fun experience but also a process with a rewarding and steep learning curve. As engineers with an analytical science-based background, we tend to rely a lot on what the numbers tell us about something. Therefore, the statistics on the Civil PE Exam give us a hint on which depth exam can be considered the easiest one to take and pass. Today, however, Isaac combines his years of experience as a test taker himself and as an instructor to those seeking their PE license to dissect these numbers and the amount of work each exam requires. By mentioning the specs required by the NCEES for each of the five exams and taking into account not only their pass rates and a number of test-takers but also the preparation time each of them requires from us, Isaac ranks, based on his own opinions and experience, which exam he thinks is the “easiest” one --- if there’s such a thing as an easy exam. The number of standards we need to know change from exam to exam, as well as the number of topics we need to cover in order to be ready for each one. The five main branches of civil engineering are widely recognized by most of us who choose a career in the field. Transmission engineers are those who combine the knowledge from different fields, such as civil and electrical engineering, and apply it to the planning and design of new routes of high-voltage power lines for delivering energy from sources to buildings and public spaces. Becoming a professional engineer is a difficult task at any point in time, regardless of where we were born or live. However, challenges become even greater when we choose to pursue a career in a different country. Not only are the language and culture adoption barriers to overcome, but the way things work out in the new place can also be intimidating. Today, our guest explains how she managed to overcome all of these. Daughter of two engineers and sister of talented siblings ranging from engineers and doctors, Martha Castellon was born and raised in Honduras. Needless to say, she grew up surrounded by engineering conversations and soon realized she was good at math and physics. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Honduras, she could not find a job there and, following her parents’ advice, she decided to learn English and come to the US to get a master’s degree. Being an international student, however, required her to find a job within three months upon completing her graduate studies. Otherwise, she would have to leave. Today, Martha shares the troubles she’s been through while on the job hunt in the US, how volunteering (you read it right!) helped her land a position as a road design engineer, how the language barriers caused her to take the FE more than once, and how the Ultimate Civil FE Review Course helped her in her goal of passing this exam. We’ve already touched on many cases of people passing the PE exam later in life, as well as on the temporary and uncomfortable conditions we may face in order to achieve something better down the road. Today’s guest is an example of both. After dealing with medical issues that caused a 75% loss of kidney function and being almost 20 years away from the civil engineering arena, Shannon Beranek can proudly say she’s a PE. Shannon Beranek is currently one of the two engineers for the city of Urbana, after going to college to get her bachelor's, master's, and an ABD on a Ph.D. course. While she was doing her master’s, she had a massive attack on her kidneys due to an auto-immune disease called Lupus that got her kidney functionality down to 25%. After some medical treatment, she found herself in a delicate financial situation and decided to leave civil engineering for areas where we're able to pay more. However, her experiences in other industries didn’t get her the life she wanted and, all of a sudden, she decided to go back into civil. Having taken the FE exam in 2001 — only 19 years away — she reasoned she needed a refresher course for the PE. Even though life is full of challenges and sometimes it makes us uncomfortable with where we’re at, more often than not, these individual situations are just steps along the way to something better. Doesn’t matter if you currently are on the job hunt or working with something that you may not be as passionate about as you thought you would, our guest today — who went from bus driver to transportation engineer — explains that these are just part of the process. Brent Chase is a transportation and project engineer at David Evans & Associates (DEA), focused on the design and construction of roads and highways. After graduating from university, he went to Logan, Utah, so that his wife could start her college program. Even though he had a really good knowledge base and internship experiences, he could not find a job in Logan right away. Therefore, he ended up being a bus driver for a while. Obviously, the goal had always been to work as an engineer, but he didn’t let this temporary condition take him off the track he wanted to go. In fact, the time he spent as a bus driver helped him get to know the city better and he later applied this knowledge to his transportation role at his company — He would think in terms of bus routes! In today’s episode, Brent mentioned his most memorable project, and why it carries that much sentimental value to him, as well as mentioning his current work on the Aurora-Donald Interchange Project in Oregon. Some people just feel like making a complete change and switching to a totally new discipline in or outside the field, while others just want to incrementally improve the work they’re already doing. Whatever the case may be, Isaac and Mark dismantle the existing barriers to it, warn about the potential hurdles and difficulties that come with such changes, while also giving tips on what your mindset should be and how this can be done smoothly. On top of that, they discuss other topics related to how civil engineers can boost their careers, including passing the FE and PE exams before it goes CBT, choosing between an MSE. or an MBA for their graduate studies, going from engineer to manager, and even asking for a raise. According to the rules specified by NCEES, people can take the PE exam whenever they feel both financially and personally ready for it, but they can only get their license after meeting the experience requirements. Therefore, most test-takers are recent graduates in their twenties and young engineers in their early thirties, which creates the belief that those with a bit more life experience are not as likely to pass the test. Today’s guest, who is in his sixties, will show that this belief is in fact a misbelief. Born and raised in the Czech Republic (former Czechoslovakia), Zdenek Vymazal is currently a construction roadway designer at the Oregon Department of Transportation. After going to a technical high school and specializing in mining surveying at a Czech university, he decided to get out of his country and move to the West, eventually settling in the US with his family. Working around civil engineers on a daily basis and looking to boost his career, he noticed that he needed to get his professional license since it was the minimum requirement for the higher positions he was aiming at. Therefore, his journey with the FE and PE exams started. After taking some of the many available online courses and failing to pass his PE exam with the content provided by these courses, he eventually found The Ultimate Civil PE Review Course, by Civil Engineering Academy. History books will definitely never let us forget the crazy year of 2020. A year that changed everybody’s ways of working, doing business, celebrating, and enjoying time with loved ones. Regardless of all the bad things that happened, we have to both recognize and be grateful for all the things that went well. In order to recognize the bright spots of 2020, as well as to prepare for a better 2021, today’s episode is a recap of all we’ve accomplished this past year, and a list of goals we’re setting for the upcoming one.    After receiving their October results, tons of CEA students have already sent us a message via our free Facebook group providing feedback on our course and how it helped them achieve their goal of passing the PE or the FE exam.
