The Driving Force Behind Every Creative Pro
Fact: creativity is a team sport. Yes, the actual act of making the work is sometimes a solo activity (drawing, writing, editing a film, etc) but the real driving force behind every creative pro is their community: their clients, collaborators, peers and the rest of the humans in the complex web of symbiotic relationships that give us inspiration, support and (ultimately) an income. Creativity cannot live in a vacuum. We depend on each other, like the members of any other ecosystem. If you want your work recognized, gain more opportunities, make connections or become more connected to your industry, this episode is for you. Enjoy! Benjamin Hardy: Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs
Dr. Benjamin Hardy is an organizational psychologist and bestselling author of Willpower Doesn't Work. His blog has been read by over 100 million people and has been featured on Forbes, Fortune, CNBC, Cheddar, Big Think and many others. When I first tuned in to his work he was the #1 writer on medium.com, where he developed a significant audience around his interests. His new book, Personality Isn't Permanent, which we talk about today opens up a discussion around the popular misconception that the role of personality plays in our daily life and our future. The historical narrative that personality is fixed and it is something you "discover" is filled with fallacies, as Dr. Hardy's scientific approach to this book shows how daily intentions create our future selves. We also talk about: Why personality tests don’t work (and can often reaffirm false narratives) What you can do to get out of beliefs around your "fixed" personality How to stop lingering on the past- whether it's a past success or a catastrophic failure Designing an identity to create your future self Reframing trauma Can't wait for you to dig. My Daily Gratitude Practice
As you probably know, I’m a huge believer that so much of ‘THE GAME’ is mental. Stress, fear, anxiety, and our natural negativity bias is always ready beat us down. One of the most powerful tools in my toolbox to harness positivity in a seemingly tough situation is a daily gratitude practice. As we head into Thanksgiving here in the states, in the middle of a pandemic and everything else, I wanted to dig into the archives and re-share my personal practice. In this episode I share the exact practice I use every morning to re-center my mindset. Join me if you're curious, and use it to jump start your own. If you’d like to fast forward directly to my guided practice, skip to about 7 minutes into the episode. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results with James Clear
James Clear is a writer, speaker and the bestselling author of one of my absolute favorite books, Atomic Habits. His work on decision-making, continuous improvement and personal development has been instrumental in my life, but it's his focus on habits that fires me up the most. If you've read Creative Calling or listened to this show in the past, you've probably heard me describe the creative pyramid. On the bottom of that pyramid is mindset, and at the top are your goals. The thing that connects your mindset and your vision for what you want in life? That's your habits. In this conversation James helps us focus on the power of habits to foster success, and more importantly, fulfillment. If you are interested in these topics, James' 3-2-1 newsletter is a great way to get a weekly dose of wisdom to keep you on track and moving forward. Enjoy! The Art of Less Doing with Ari Meisel
We all know that this world is fast paced. If you're like me, there's never enough time to do all the things you want. Naturally, the feeling of overwhelm creeps in, hindering our ability to operate as creatives and entrepreneurs. How to take back time and begin moving towards our biggest goals. Half an hour with Ari today and a whole bunch of tactical information to help you hone your craft, your practice and your life. You might want to have a notepad for this one. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Failing to Succeed
One of the most powerful understandings I've internalized over the past decade hosting this show is this: the world's top performers, entrepreneurs and creators often feel like they are imposters to their own lives. Operating at the edge of their ability and constantly failing forward comes with the challenge of overcoming self-doubt and imposter syndrome. The good news? It's normal to doubt yourself. Even in areas where I consider myself highly proficient there are still moments in the unknown where I question whether I have what it takes to bring my vision into reality. Remember, every creative effort contains the seeds of a future success. Just like going to the gym, the more you train your emotional and mental strengths to endure the feeling of uncomfortable self-doubt and failure, the more you will persist in pursuing your dreams. Celebrate the Small Wins
When you feel like you're running in place, not making progress, feeling overwhelmed becomes the norm. Often we gloss over smaller accomplishments, focusing on grand milestones out in the distance. We are biologically wired to focus on the negative, but that doesn't mean you can't take control and flip the script. By celebrating small wins we begin to rewire our brains to recognize the progress we are making. In this episode, I share my experience learning how to celebrate daily, weekly, and monthly wins and why this practice transformed my mindset. Momentum comes from the thoughts that we say to ourselves. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. The Art of Done
Your conscious mind is a critic. If you rely on it too much while you’re working, you’ll struggle to make progress. In this episode, I share a simple, repeatable process to finishing work you start without self-judgement weighing you down. The idea here isn’t to win the next high praise for your best work, it’s about taking whatever action you can, and repeat. Having your work recognized will come in due time. Harness Kindness as Your Hidden Super Power with Adrienne Bankert
Kindness is a super power and a breath of fresh air in a world where negativity and hardship aren't hard to find. Yet what my guest Adrienne Bankert found, is kindness isn't merely about being nice. A mindset of kindness ripples into a staggering amount of personal fulfillment, growth, and empowerment. Adrienne Bankert is an Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Award-winning correspondent for ABC News, Good Morning America, World News Tonight, and Nightline. She reported live from Chiang Rai, Thailand, during the rescue of thirteen boys and their soccer coach as the world watched the historic rescue. Her compelling interviews from guests that range from wounded warriors to celebrities including Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and more have gained widespread attention. Adrienne saw firsthand how the power of kindness can work in her career. Uncertain about where she would go next and determined to pursue her dream of being on national TV, she took a chance and landed a Los Angeles reporting job. Her new boss told her it was her reputation for kindness throughout her career that was the key to her being hired. Just a few months later, that opened the door to the biggest break of her life. In this episode we dive into: How to make kindness a habit to bring you more peace, inspiration, and impact. James Nestor: The Lost Art of Breath
One of the most essential functions for health and wellbeing of a human is just breathing. Breathing air. In and out. In fact, we do this 25,000 times a day. Yet, as today's guest James Nestor will share, a wide majority of us have lost the ability to breathe correctly wreaking havoc on our health. But all is not lost. Modern science agrees, that even the smallest adjustments in the way we inhale and exhale can have dramatic downstream positive effects. James Nestor is a journalist who has travelled the world to find out what is going on with our breathing. He has written for Outside, Scientific American, The Atlantic, Dwell, The New York Times, and many other publications. I first discovered his work with his book Deep: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us about Ourselves which was a finalist for the 2015 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing, an Amazon Best Science Book of 2014, and more. What James has learned about the breathe to help with anxiety, asthma, sleep apnea, physical & mental performance, even rejuvenate internal organs, reverse auto-immune diseases, strengthening the immune system and so much more. Create Before You Consume
Too many of us start our days consuming instead of creating: browsing the web, watching TV, whatever. We become audience members and critics. Our thoughts get sucked into what other people are doing, how well we're doing it, and the response they're getting from thew world. This is super toxic and a surefire way to undermine your creative mindset. Creating before consuming is a seemingly minor shift that will have a profound effect on your daily outlook and creative capacity. So the consider this your friendly reminder: Create first. Make something, no matter how small. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Stephan Moccio: Heal the Soul, Restore the Calm
This episode is a full circle moment. I met Stephan Moccio on the internet some years ago when I would often see him name in my social feeds. It was not long before I started paying attention to him and his work too. Come to find out he's a Grammy Award winning and Academy Award-nominated composer. He's written global hits for Céline Dion, The Weekend, Miley Cyrus and Seal. Now he's recently released his debut piano solo album, Tales of Solace. Born in Canada, as a three year old, Moccio began his training in classical music at The Royal Conservatory of Music. Post signing a global deal with Universal Music, he moved his studio to Los Angeles, where he currently resides. Intertwined in our conversation, Stephan plays his some pieces off his new album on his custom upright Yamaha piano. In creating the album he says, "I needed to recalibrate musically and personally. Solitude and quiet, in a noisy world, are elements I have been craving for a long time. Naturally, it made sense to engage in an intimate conversation between myself and the instrument which has been faithful to me my entire life. Strip it down... one person, in one room, with one instrument." Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Jasmine Star: How to Grow Your Community
Just a few days ago, my book Creative Calling hit it’s one year anniversary. And what a year it’s been. One of my favorite things about the last year, has been the growing community pursuing their own calling and rallying behind creativity. Community is critical for support, feedback, opportunities, and of course, celebrating those wins. Yet, it’s one of the most overlooked areas for creating success in any field. So it seemed fitting to share this conversation I had last fall with my good friend Jasmine Star on cultivating our own personal community. If you’re not familiar with her work, let me catch you up. Jasmine Star is a photographer and a business strategist. After quitting law school, she picked up a camera and built a huge internationally recognized + respected photography business. Over the past few years, Jasmine has expanded her business to help entrepreneurs build a brand and market it on social media. What I love about this conversation is Jasmine really taps into many of the commonly asked questions around cultivating community such as: How to navigate social situations as an introvert How to create real personal connection The importance of consistency and continuing to show up How to break through fear of what other people think and so much more. Today’s episode is part of a companion class for Creative Calling. If you missed the class, it’s available for FREE for anyone who purchased a book. Stop Glamorizing Busy
President Dwight D. Eisenhower often said that what is important is rarely urgent and what is urgent is rarely important. I’ve found that the most badass people I know, the ones who are the best in the world at their craft, are rarely busy in the way we’ve been taught to think of it. Being busy is a disease, a terminal one. It destroys your precious time. Being effective is about using every minute thoughtfully and mindfully as you make steady progress toward your dream. The biggest surprise to me has been that those people, those creators who are so deliberate and planned in the way they work, are also incredibly joyful and playful while they work. Planning and play aren’t opposites; they complement each other beautifully. Food for thought. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Nabil Ayers: Music , Writing, and A Time for Change
I'm excited to share my conversation with my dear friend Nabil Ayers. He's a multi-talented hyphenate who opened one of Seattle's iconic record stores, Sonic Boom at age 25. As both an executive and an artist who began his career as a musician Ayers has performed on several albums on both independent and major labels. Today, Nabil is the US General Manager of Beggars Group label 4AD where he has run campaigns for The National (GRAMMY award winner in 2018), Big Thief (GRAMMY award nominee in 2020), Grimes, Future Islands and St. Vincent as well as reissue campaigns including Pixies’ album Doolittle which was certified Platinum in 2019. In both 2019 and 2020, Ayers was named one of Billboard magazine's "Indie Power Players." In this episode, we explore Nabil's interesting career from musician, to entrepreneur and music executive, and now writer. Nabil's recent writing about race and music has been published in The New York Times, NPR and GQ and he will publish his memoir with Viking Books in 2021. Enjoy! Stress Is Optional with Cynthia Ackrill
Ever feel stressed? It's a question that almost is absurd. So much of our human experience involves stress and anxiety these days. It is further compounded by the fact that our brain is wired to respond to it. Adrenaline. Cortisol. Fight or flight... If a bear is chasing us, helpful. If you're reading the news? Not so much. Enter Dr. Cynthia Ackrill. She's a physician, a stress expert, and leadership coach and she is on a mission to keep dis-stress from eroding focus, creativity, health, success, and relationships. Today's episode is a couple of my favorite segments from her CreativeLive class on stress. But this is just a tip of the iceberg. Her class is a deep dive of how panic, anxiety, and stress can stand in the way of the life we want. The good news? We can stop the cycle. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Photographing History with Pete Souza
One of the things I love about photography is it's a universal language. You can look at an image intuitively feel the power and the emotion, regardless of age, race, gender, social/economic status, geography, even time. Pete Souza is such a critical creator in not just the arc of the United States of America and world politics, but as a guy out there doing what he loves, chasing his passion and hoping to tell a story and represent history in a powerful and profound way. He's done cover stories for Nat Geo, LIFE magazine, Fortune, Newsweek, and was one of the Chicago Tribune staff back in 2001. Most notably he was the official photographer of President Ronald Reagan, and then the Chief Official White House Photographer for President Barack Obama, where he made some of the most iconic pictures in the last 20 years. His book, "Obama: An Intimate Portrait," was published by Little, Brown & Company in 2017, and debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. It is one of the best-selling photography books of all time. His latest book, "Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents," also debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list in October 2018. This conversation has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with storytelling, pursuing dreams, and the road to get there, whatever your dreams might be. Enjoy! Three Cornerstones for Success
If you turn back the clock a couple decades, you’ll find me in the following situation: I’m sitting at my parents’ kitchen table, explaining to them that I’ve decided to drop out of med school and a PhD in philosophy to become a professional photographer. In addition to being a tough conversation, this was perhaps the biggest turning point in my career (and life). It was the moment where I walked away from what I was told I “should” do and committed myself to building a career around my passion: creativity. It’s a path that few (including me) could have predicted, but I’m far from the only one with a winding path to my ultimate destination. In fact, I’d suggest that paths like mine are the new normal, that the concept of a linear career path is nearly fiction, and almost entirely the exception rather than the rule. As such, nearly all of us will find ourselves at a turning point in our careers (or lives), whether by choice or by circumstance. And while there are rarely easy choices in these situations, I’d like to share my own personal approach for coming out on the right side of them-- your mileage may vary, but this is what’s worked for me. Society would have us believe that we’re just supposed to know what we’re meant to do in our life, but it’s not true. Exponential Living with Sheri Riley
One of the things I love about this show is the opportunity to share with you things I'm learning, listening to, and taking inspiration from. Today's show is no different. My guest today is Sheri Riley. After 20 years of creating really innovative marketing fo Usher, TLC, Toni Braxton, Converse, the NBA, BMW, and Turner, to name a few, she now serves as an Empowerment Speaker and Life Strategist. Not too long ago, Sheri joined us at the CreativeLive studios for her class, based on her book Exponential Living. In a world that's a bit out of sorts right now, this her message could not be more timely. So I wanted to share a few segments of her class that I really resonated with me around three topics: 1- What is our definition of success. So many of us are striving and working hard toward success. But Sheri helps us ask ourselves, WHAT is the success we are actually seeking. Too many of us are listening and even living someone else's definition of success. 2- Peace is Power. Our busyness, stress, anxiety leads to emptiness and what Sheri helps us tap into is the grounding sense of peace to remain present in the moment, to allow moments of reflection, and tap into an inner strength of who we are. 3- How to build lasting confidence - If drive is a protective strength, Confidence is our vulnerable strength. It gives us courage to be. These are just a few powerful topics in her class. Of course, if you'd like to check out the full class, it's available on CreativeLive at https://cr8.lv/ExponentialLiving Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive.
