Data-Driven Life Decisions with Seth Stephens-Davidowitz
Is it always the best decision to trust your gut? When it’s time to make a simple decision, (where to eat, what car to buy, where to go on vacation) we rely on resources and data at our disposal. We check reviews, compare ratings, and ultimately decide based on available data. So why does it often feel like we're winging it when it comes to bigger life decisions? Am I happy? Am I working on the right things? Is my career on the right path? What would our lives look like if we took a data driven approach to some of life's bigger questions? Seth Stephens-Davidowitz is an author, data scientist, and speaker who studies what we can learn about people from new, internet data sources. In this episode, Seth discusses why you don’t need to wing it as much as you think you have to. Seth’s call to action is to observe the data that is readily available to you. Use them as guide posts. If we consider the collective experience of others in our own decision making, we start to understand ourselves on a deeper level; and that is a powerful place to make decisions from. Seth's Book, "Don't Trust Your Gut" is available now. Enjoy! --- Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Beware of Inspiration
Mike Tyson once said, “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” What do you do when a brilliant idea hits you unexpectedly? We all know the feeling- that little creative jolt of inspiration… but it’s not always convenient to drop what you’re doing and immediately begin working on this fantastic new idea. And even if you could, would you want to rely on inspiration to strike in order to take action? Creative distractions are the easiest way to break away from creative work sessions. In today's episode, we're discussing how to make space for them without impacting the work that needs to be done. Lisa Bilyeu: Escape Purgatory of the Mundane with Radical Confidence
“It really starts with just saying I am going to bet on myself… no one else is going to bet on you if you don’t.” Lisa Bilyeu spent 8 years of her life as a supportive housewife (which she described as “mundane purgatory”) until her husband's fast growing company, Quest Nutrition, required her to dive head first into business. Energized by her work, she started giving herself permission to make small moves in another direction. These decisions ultimately led Lisa to become co-founder of a billion-dollar company, an international leader in the world of personal growth and now, author empowering women to become the heroes of their own lives. Lisa has written her first book, Radical Confidence: 10 No-BS Lessons on Becoming the Hero of Your Own Life, being released this week. Are your relationships supporting your creativity?
Have you ever asked yourself how your relationships influence your creativity or the pursuit of your dreams? Or the inverse, how how being a creator impacts the relationships in your life? Taking into account the time and energy required to run a business or pursue dreams with a two year inversion of normality, it makes sense that some friends and family don't always see the best version of us. In this episode, we explore how our relationships impact our creativity and visa versa and what more we can do to cultivate human connection. A few notes from the show: Where to start? Self awareness. Your ability to read the room and understand your role in whatever social scenario you find yourself is a skill that can be honed and improved. Who's judgement really matters? Brené Brown keeps a 1x1 inch square piece of paper with a list of the few people who she truly respects their opinions. Rather than get distracted by the criticisms and praise of strangers, focusing on being the best version of yourself to the people who matter most will guide your actions wisely. Family isn't everything. Often we feel obliged to cater to the vision our family members have for our one precious life. This is a huge point of contention for many people, and if this strikes a cord with you, I encourage you to have an honest dialogue about why you are passionate about the path you're on. At the end of the day, you are the only one who should be directing the path of your one precious life. Human connection plays a direct role in how you show up in the world, and the way in which you pursue your dreams. This week, take some time to evaluate how your relationships impact your creativity, productivity and mental state. Have you ever felt "off", but you weren't exactly sure why? Amber Rae is a global voice for emotional well-being and self-discovery. She's also a creative who translates her deep insights into the human experience into art that inspires. In today's episode, Amber helps us explore what it feels like to be out of alignment with one's true self, how we can get in tune with our inner being, and how we can use our intuition to make better choices. Here are some highlights from our conversation: * Who is Amber Rae? * How we can relate to our inner world and come home to ourselves * Amber's experience of creating from a place of fear and scarcity rather than a place of power, abundance, and truth * Is it possible to come into alignment with yourself without dismantling everything? * Alignment doesn't have to be a big deal. It can be in the small decisions we make every day. It can be the morning practice that helps us feel centered and present with ourselves. * Different stages of aligning with your true self, according to Amber * In moments of despair, we should remember that this is just a phase and won't last forever. * What is intuition and how can we tap into it? * What is toxic perfectionism and why should we avoid it? Can You Work from Anywhere?
As creators, we often place a large emphasis on our workspace. Sometimes it might even block us from doing any creative work at all. Of course, a large, airy, well-lit work space of your own—preferably with an ocean view—would be ideal. But highly productive artists everywhere hunker down to work in cafés, restaurants, co-working spaces, parks, empty college classrooms, and waiting rooms—not to mention buses, trains, subways, and planes. A huge part of one’s early endeavors—whether you’re picking up a new creative craft, starting a new business, or transitioning out of a full-time job into a freelance career—is about flexibility. Think about modifications or purchases you might make to become “creative ready” in as many environments as possible. This might mean carrying a sketch pad in your bag at all times, investing in a mobile audio rig or a digital tablet, or renting a spot at a co-working space. If your intention is to become a professional creator being able to create on-demand is key. This short episode will take a look at how your workspace is working for you. The Wayward Path of Photographer Chris Burkard
In this episode, Chris Burkard reflects on his career and the wayward journey he's been on. I have had the great privilege of knowing Chris for darn near a decade now. As an accomplished photographer, explorer, author, creative director, and speaker, he has travelled to some of the most remote places on earth capturing stories and images that connect us to nature and the importance of protecting it. After nearly 20 years as a creator and storyteller, he feels like he's finally hitting his stride. That might sound odd considering his work has been seen by millions, but the truth is there's rarely a straight line to our career growth. In this episode we explore: Figuring yourself out on your career path Going beyond what you're comfortable with and getting comfortable being uncomfortable * The importance of doing something meaningful and purposeful Why you should pursue a career that excites you Why being a specialist is incredibly valuable Projects have a lifespan. Sometimes the hardest part is learning when to let go and when to pass it on to someone else, because that's how it might come to life. There's something to be said for thrusting yourself into situations where there are no guarantees, but where the mystery of the experience is still there. 10 Ways to Grow Your Career
Career decisions can be daunting. The right choice is often unclear, and the trade offs uncertain. Should you stay in your current role or go look for something new? Is it in your best interest to move cities and re locate or double down on your current market? These big decisions can leave us paralyzed. And yet, one of the ways to break through that paralysis is by soliciting the opinions of others. As the legendary troublemaker, author and blogger, Luvvie Ajayi Jones says, "the best decisions are not counsel decisions. Career and life choices are bet made by you and you alone." However, by sourcing a broad range of career advice, what you end up with is a constellation of possibilities through which to draw from. This is a collection of perspectives around career strategy and building the living and life you want for yourself. Make Your Message Heard with Victoria Wellman
What sets memorable stories, presentations, and speeches apart from the ordinary? If you think it has to do with the speaker's innate ability, you'll be surprised to learn that it doesn't. Fortunately, Victoria Wellman knows how to craft compelling messages and overcome our fear of public speaking. Victoria is the Co-Founder of The Oratory Laboratory, a Manhattan-based boutique creative agency for public speakers. Formerly a journalist, copywriter, producer, a trained actress and voice-over artist, Victoria has crafted speeches for influencers, politicians, entrepreneurs, Olympians, NFL stars, astronauts, rap stars, artists, and activists, and has garnered media attention from The Today Show, Martha Stewart, CNN, NPR, NBC, ABC and CBS News. Victoria turned author with her newly released book, "Before You Say Anything", in which she details the creative process behind crafting memorable speeches. Giving a speech- or any form of communication, is about synthesizing ideas - which is the core of creativity. Some tips we discuss: How to identify ideas you want to share. Creative exploration and experimentation start even before you think of what to say. Consider your audience. Include them in your narrative. Your message is not a graded monologue but a dialogue Embed your personal narrative into your message. Originality clicks better with your audience and makes people remember your message for longer. How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole with Susan Cain
Do you typically repress pain, internalize it, and let it damage the way you treat yourself and others? On today's episode of Chase Jarvis Live, I'm joined by Susan Cain. Susan is the author of "Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole," and "Quiet Journal, Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverts," which spent eight years on The New York Times best seller list, and has been translated into 40 languages. Joy and sorrow are eternally paired in this world. So why do we so willingly accept and celebrate one, and try to distance ourselves from the other? Susan encourages our listeners to see their pain, sorrow, sadness, suffering, as their own creative superpowers. A few main takeaways from the show: Why humans we play sad songs 5x more than happy songs. Finding validation and permission to feel pain, move towards it. The role creativity has in our ability to make something beautiful out of painful experiences One of the greatest gifts of humanity is the innate ability to take something painful and turn it into an expression of beauty. This expression acts as a positive coping mechanism. When that transformation occurs, we grow through it, and come out the other side with a new understanding of the magic that exists behind painful experiences. There is no shortage of feelings on this journey, but how we use these feelings can make all the difference. Susan leaves us off with an important message: Seek beauty daily. The more you look, the more you’ll find. Enjoy! --- Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. What is the first thing you do when you wake up? Max Lugavere: Can Food Turn Us Into Geniuses?
Max Lugavere is a health and science journalist focused on nutrition, fitness, and wellness. Max’s journey to understanding the power food has on brain function began when was helping his mother, who developed Lewy body dementia. He noticed the doctors doing nothing except trying to manage the symptoms- rather than actually curing the disease. He started learning and applying what we are now learning about the science of food and cooking and kicked off a decade-long journey to understand how to prevent cognitive decline. What he found out was that, “The same steps that we can take that are going to buy us extra years if not possibly decades of cognitive health also improve the way our brains work here and now.” In this episode we dig into: The why behind a Genius Life came from Max’s mom, who developed a rare form of dementia. When the doctors didn’t help, he took it upon himself to research everything he could to help his mom battle her early onset dementia to try to help her live the best life she could. We can use a modified Mediterranean diet and a DASH diet to help our brains through healthy proteins, fruits, and vegetables without a lot of grains to improve our brain health now and to help us lead better lives as we age. How to Make Time for Creativity
If you told me in my twenties that being rigorous about my schedule would be a major differentiator in the success of my creative work, I would have said, you’re crazy. Creativity Hates Complacency with Maria Brito
Career transitions are often bumpy. New processes, different people, and all the energy that goes into building the skills, network and momentum- no wonder why the comfort of a stable career is prevents many people from pursuing their calling. Change isn't easy. Now imagine you're a working attorney with a promising future and more than a decade of education, testing, and training to get to where you are. That's the scenario my guest on the show today, Maria Brito found herself in. She recalls, "For the years I was an attorney, it was like I had a fake identity." It was clear that law was not her calling. Fast forward to today's episode, and Maria is now an award-winning contemporary art advisor, author, and curator. She has written for publications such as Entrepreneur, Huffington Post, Elle, Forbes... the list goes on. Complex Magazine named Maria one of the Top 20 Power Players in the Art World. She now teaches creativity courses in companies and, in 2019, she launched “Jumpstart”, an online program on creativity for entrepreneurs based on years of research and observation in both the areas of business and art. The episode is filled with advice for making a career transition, ideas for jumpstarting your creativity and explores how a lack of experience can be an advantage. Highlights from the show: While educating clients and creating content isn't directly revenue-generating, Maria describes how a less transactional approach to the art business has been a key component of her success. Leaving a legacy and being a pioneer: "Anyone can be a pioneer of something if only they let their ideas out, and only if they are willing to execute them." Creativity is a series of habits, actions and activities. It's not some mystical flow state. How NFTs and blockchain tech is impacting the conventional art world (there is no longer a clear boundary between digital and physical art) Taking calculated risks to pursue passion Being willing to shift Finding gold at the intersection of two or more distinct domains There is so much goodness to unpack from Maria. A Love Letter to Human Potential with Kate Robinson
Kate Robinson is a writer, speaker, and co- founder of a number of initiatives dedicated to the legacy of her father, Sir Ken Robinson. On the show, Kate shares some backstory on her father’s life, and the journey that led to her completing his final piece of work. In Sir Ken and Kate’s perspectives, there are 3 myths regarding creativity that hinder our advancement as a collective. Creativity is about a certain group of people, “the creatives” Creativity is about certain things/subjects (music, writing, art, dance, etc) You’re either creative or you’re not The truth is, creativity lives in each of us, it is a muscle that can be trained and strengthened, and there is space for creativity in every activity. Sir Ken and Kate define creativity as “the process of having original ideas that have value.” It is an ongoing process of idea creation and evaluation, and it can be applied to anything. True change comes from those who dare to imagine. Creativity comes from within, and progress comes from diversity of thought. Joy is the Way
Do you have a big dream, but you're having trouble making progress? There is one simple thing you can do to start moving, and re-train your brain to operate autonomously, prioritize joy. Once you make this contract with yourself to pursue joy on a regular basis, you start to create inertia. So how do you get started? Maybe you don't know what action to take? I believe that a hugely under valued element of the equation is joy. You don't need to wait for lighting to strike. You don't need a master grand plan. Just start doing more of the stuff that make you feel more alive, and less of the things that block you or don’t serve you. In this episode I share a few thoughts on how prioritizing joy on a daily basis can have tremendous positive impacts in other area of life. So are YOU following joy? Share this message with a friend who needs to hear it. Enjoy! Have a question? Text me 1-206-309-5177

How to Build Confidence and Be More Social with Vanessa Van Edwards
Are there certain traits that make someone charismatic? Why do some people captivate a room, while others struggle to manage a small meeting? Why do some ideas spread, but other good ones fall by the wayside? These are the questions that bestselling author and human behavior expert Vanessa Van Edwards seeks to answer in her new book, "Cues: Master the Secret Language of Charismatic Communication." If we're often overlooked for job opportunities or have our ideas ignored, we should pay closer attention to the "tiny" signals we send to others through our body language, facial expressions, word choice, and vocal inflection. Vanessa believes these "cues" have a huge impact on how we, and our ideas, come across and can either undermine or reinforce our message. In today's episode, I talk with her about her book—and how we can convey likeability, trust, and power in every interaction. Over 54 million people have seen Vanessa on YouTube and in her viral TED Talk. Her behavior research lab, Science of People, has been featured on Fast Company, Inc., USA Today, CNN, CBS, and Entrepreneur Magazine. Here are some highlights from our conversation: When we meet someone, over 80% of our judgments are based on two traits: warmth and competence. The faster we can answer the following questions, the faster we can connect with people: Can I trust you? Can I rely on you? Even in the virtual world, we can communicate effectively and give and receive social cues. Myth: cues are less important on a video call. Pro tip: Stand more than 18 inches away from the camera in an online meeting to avoid appearing to invade participants' intimate space. This helps others trust us more easily and see more cues, especially gestures, which is important because people use gestures to get additional information. Enjoy! Have a question? Why I Don’t Set Resolutions (and What I Do Instead)
Here we are at the end of February - how are those New Years Resolutions going? 😁 There is so much hype built into our society around resolutions. We often associate them with huge goals, and things we want to accomplish, rather than behaviors we want to embody. If 64% of all people fail their resolutions within one month of starting, what is the common factor that makes them so hard to stick to? Over the years, I developed another method to review my habits and set new ones. In this episode, I share my method along with some new habits I set for myself in 2022. If you've struggled in the past with goal setting or just want to try another way to look at your habits, this behavior oriented system might be for you. Enjoy! Have a question? Trauma is Wreaking Havoc in Our Lives with Gabby Bernstein
Deep in the grips of drug addiction, Gabby Bernstein was sitting in her beaten-up white Toyota Corolla playing a cassette again and again and listening to a psychic saying to her, “You have two choices in this lifetime: You could stay addicted—and that’s not going to be good—or you can get clean and make a major impact on the world.” In that moment, she couldn’t contemplate what it would be like to get out of bed later that day, let alone make a major impact on the world. But she kept listening. Fast forward almost two decades, Gabby has written her ninth book, Happy Days, in which she guides readers down a path where they can go from trauma to profound freedom and inner peace. She’s living proof that it’s possible to overcome the challenges of addiction, trauma, and depression and find hope again. Timestamps: [00:00] Intro [02:25] Who is Gabby Bernstein? Payal Kadakia studied operations research and economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but she was always determined to keep dance in her life—both during her college years and her professional career. She was three years old when she fell in love with dance because it offered her a place to center herself, be creative, and be herself. How to Stop Procrastinating and Start Executing
Are you getting in your own way? This week I'm diving into two questions from the community. The first question involves knowing how to choose which projects to commit to, and how to stay focused even when new opportunities present themselves. My top level advice: Identify what YOU care about and what you want to stand for Don’t spend too much time worrying what other people are doing Experiment and play Find an accounta-bili-buddy Learn through action Execute on ideas The second question we get into the art of storytelling. Whether we like it or not, when we're telling stories, there is a piece of ourselves that is present. Even if the goal is to be an unbiased 3rd party, how you tell the story will impact how it's percieved. Embrace your own unique perspective. It can be the difference between good and great storytelling. Enjoy! Have a question? Text me 1-206-309-5177

Unlock the Power of Nonverbal Communication with Former FBI Agent Joe Navarro
Communication is one of the most powerful skills a human can master. Exceptional people speak in a cadence, have a pleasant aura, listen to and validate others, and use broad, straightforward gestures to communicate. You’ve heard the phrase, “It’s not what you say it’s how you say it?” In this episode, Joe Navarro explains how to use nonverbals to communicate more effectively. With 25 years in the FBI, specializing in counterintelligence and behavioral assessment, Joe has authored 14 books in 29 languages dealing with human behavior and body language. After more than a decade, What Every BODY is Saying, remains the #1 selling body-language book in the world. Louder Than Words, based on his annual lectures at the Harvard Business School over the last twelve years, was hailed by The Wall Street Journal as "One of the six best business books to read for your career." Joe’s newest book, Be Exceptional, highlights five distinguishable traits that most exceptional humans possess. At first, putting together the pieces to understand what makes a great communicator seems daunting. But rest assured that these skills are learnable. Enjoy! Have a question? Text me 1-206-309-5177

How You Talk to Yourself Matters
How often do you catch yourself in a storm of self-defeating thoughts? Do you tend to be self-critical and drift toward worry regardless of the circumstances? How do you usually talk to yourself? Are you your own cheerleader? How often do you hear in your head statements like “I’m no good”? You can’t reason with your reptilian brain, but the good news is that it learns through action. Every time you take action and survive, it learns a new lesson. In other words, the process of facing fear, acknowledging it, taking action, is like a muscle. The more you work it, the easier it becomes. This is one of the best mechanisms that I know for reducing the volume of negative self-talk because taking even small actions in the face of fear helps you become more confident. Today's episode is a reminder to evaluate how you talk to yourself. Timestamps: [00:00] Intro [01:05] Language is incredibly powerful, and you’re in charge of writing your life script. [02:47] Fear is a gift, a precious instinct. [04:09] Take action despite fear. [05:21] Naysayers are not in the room with you right now. Is fear doing a table read? How to Say No to Protect Your Time with Jason Fried
With so much information, and gadgets and access and hustle and email and …and.. aren’t you overloaded at work!? It’s understandable and it’s a real problem. If this describes you or someone you love…you’ll LOVE this episode of the show. Enter: Jason Fried. He’s the brilliant NYT best-selling author and co-founder of the software firm, Basecamp. Since long before meeting Jason in person he’s always caught my eye as perhaps THE outspoken thinker / critic of the current status of work, our unhealthy habits around our jobs, and our addictions to busy-making. Whether it’s the toxic hustle, the grow-at-all-cost mentality, or the idea of working your fingers to the bone…Jason helps us all see why 99% of this approach is rubbish. And within 3 minutes of meeting him / listening to this episode, I’m banking you’ll be in agreement with him. The one refreshing difference with Jason? He also gives us a roadmap to fix what we’ve broken. In this episode we talk about his latest book (co-authored with previous CJLIVE podcast guest David Heinemeier Hansson) called It Doesn’t Have to be Crazy at Work, which lays out a play-by-play on how to avoid all exhaustion, stress, and burnout and how to find tools for reshaping success, habits, trust, self care, and gaining that much-needed fresh perspective. In this episode, we cover How hard work and hours are not the same thing. In fact, long hours leads to burn out. Why instant communication (slack, messenger, text etc) is making us slaves to our devices, less effective, and spending more time on the conveyor belt of information consumption than doing any real work. Some insights and strategies for regaining control over our screen time, our sleep patterns, and where we put our our attention. A re-framing of our always-busy culture around the JOYS of missing out. Not FOMO…we’re talking JOMO. Why regaining control of our time starts with learning how to say no. …and that’s all in the first 10 minutes. Just kidding but you get the point. This episode of the podcast is chock full of inspired virtues for reclaiming our spirit, doing GREAT work and loving life in the process. Enjoy! Have a question? Text me 1-206-309-5177

Living Shouldn't Hurt with Aaron Alexander
What do you think of when you hear the word fitness? Going to the gym? Going for a run? Yoga? For most of us, fitness is something that we do. We block off an hour or two during the day to focus on our physical health. We get our sweat session in, but then what? On the show this week, we are joined by Aaron Alexander. Aaron is a manual therapist and movement coach, as well as an author (The Align Method), and host of the Align Podcast. Aaron’s message is clear. Fitness is not what you do - it’s who you are. On today's show we talk about: Our bodies are under construction 100% of the time. Chronic pain is a huge issue in the US and other Western nations. The main differentiator between us and one of the healthiest populations in the world is not in the way we work out, but in the way we rest. The Power of the Blank Page with Margaret Atwood
Nothing intimidates a writer more than a blank page. Yet, the tranquillity in the white space is what stimulates thinking. As a communicator and storyteller, isn't creativity all about contemplating filling up those white spaces with words? Margaret Atwood is an award-winning author whose work has been published in more than forty-five countries in multiple forms of creative expression, including graphic novels, TV series and films. Her latest novel, The Testaments, sequel to her award-winning bestseller The Handmaid's Tale, won the 2019 Booker Prize. She is the recipient of numerous other awards, including the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, the Franz Kadka International Literary Prize, the PEN Center USA Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Los Angeles Times Innovator's Award. In this discussion, Margaret answers questions about how to unleash the potential of the blank page, turn the idea of a character or a theme into a novel, and retell your story through a different creative medium. Margaret also explores storytelling in exquisite detail, drawing from her love for history to explain its origination and historical significance. A novel is not a box you get to store things into; it's an art you sculpt. You decide what to make out of it. And as Margaret explains, it doesn't always turn right. It could take several misspellings and failures before landing the perfect draft. Enjoy! Have a question? Text me 1-206-309-5177

Ego, Disrupted. How Buddhist Wisdom Meets Western Therapy with Dr. Mark Epstein
Psychotherapy and Buddhist thought have long been considered separate worlds - psychotherapy is about optimizing the mind and minimizing the impact of emotional trauma, while Buddhist practice emphasizes letting go of control. The two approaches are not mutually exclusive. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Mark Epstein, psychotherapist and bestselling author, to discuss the intersection of Eastern and Western thought. We discuss the critical importance to “getting over yourself,” the power of mindfulness coupled with traditional psychotherapy, and how performance-minded people can achieve more by letting go. How to Keep Your Clients
In today's episode, we address two questions. The first is from Storm, a photographer, who is unclear as to what he should build his brand around – his name or something else? This is a common question small business owners and freelancers grapple with, but it applies to anyone building a brand from the ground up. There are pros and cons to both; your end goals will determine the best plan. The second question is from Billy, a mobile DJ, who wants to discover a better way to stay connected with his clients. In the era of instant messaging and flooded mailboxes, what is a breathable way to communicate your work and cherish meaningful customer relationships? After all, the constant pursuit of new clients and maintaining existing ones is what takes your business forward. [00:50] Question #1 (Storm) [04:43] Question #2 (Billy) Enjoy! Have a question? Looking at Frida Kahlo's life as a masterpiece distinct from any single piece of art she created begs the question, "how can we create a masterpiece of our own lives?" This is the concept to keep at the top of mind as you press play and dive into the show. Other highlights from the episode: Embracing both sides of a mixed cultural background Why it's important to talk openly about race and culture Story of getting foot in the door in the magazine world Difficulty prioritizing your career and work/life balance The reality of the challenges involved in working with a big brand like the Today show or Oprah Enjoy! Hack Your Creativity
Each and every moment is an opportunity to create. It might be as simple as cooking a meal, trying a new exercise or co-creating a conversation, but creativity on a small scale has a tremendous ripple effect in other areas of life. It's a muscle with infinite potential. Sounds crazy, right? Creativity and art are often conflated. While they're certainly related, they are not the same thing. Simply put, creativity is connecting two unlikely or unrelated things to produce something new and ideally, useful. On today's episode I sit down with Chris Hutchins on All the Hacks Podcast, to explore the creative hacks that supercharged my personal and professional life for the past 2 decades. Whether your goals are hobby-related or you are on the path to becoming a professional creator, this episode has something for you. Some highlights from our conversation: Intro + my background [00:30] My personal creative journey [02:18] Are children more creative than adults? [06:55] The simple definition of creativity. [10:22] How to train your creative muscles no matter what you’re doing. [13:31] 4 simple steps to create anything successfully. [17:56] Why mastering something teaches you how to master anything. [29:58] The impact travel (even local travel) has on your creativity. [31:42] How much routine should your morning routine have? [39:29] Why you should expose yourself to cold water daily even if it is uncomfortable (cold water therapy). [41:19] Moving from being stuck to a zone of flow (the power of play and discipline). Master Your Inner Voice with Dr. Ethan Kross
We spend over a third of our lives speaking to ourselves internally. And unsurprisingly, that internal voice isn’t always nice. Self-talk can take a positive or negative spiral depending on your control of the brain. Negative self-talk gets you spinning around your worry, hindering productive energy. Positive self-talk creates confidence and motivation, especially during a challenge. Dr. Ethan Kross has been researching how to manage emotions for more than two decades. As one of the world's leading experts on conscious mind control and an award-winning professor at the University of Michigan, is on the show to talk about what he’s learned and compiled for the book, Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It. His pioneering research has been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The New England Journal of Medicine, and Science. Ethan is not interest in how to “quiet the chatter,” but rather, how we can use it to our advantage. Ethan explains that chatter isn't inherently debilitating and that you can turn it into empowering thoughts – by making a conscious effort. In his words, "retelling your story is definitely one way of harnessing the chatter." This episode is full of tactics, tools and resources, including: Distanced self-talk: Ethan talks about being the friend you want to receive advice from. Use your name when talking to yourself, and coach yourself through the situation. Mental time travel: Jump to the future and assess how your problem would look like at that particular point in time. How are you going to feel about this a week from now? A month from now? a year from now? Compensatory control: Organize your spaces. While chatter feels like losing control of your mind, organizing your external environment could feel like exercising control of your life, thus helping you fade away chatter. Seek a sense of awe: Sometimes, experiencing a sense of vastness, wonder, or admiration helps you shut down narrow, negative thoughts and give you a broader perspective to events. Zooming out of the frame: Expand your view beyond the narrow edge, think broader to understand your problems or situations from a larger perspective. That will help you see beyond the chatter. One of my favorite aspects of this show is learning about cutting-edge science and testing it out for myself. We now have specific, evidence-based tools that can boost mental fitness and ability to manage emotions. Enjoy! Have a question? Text me 1-206-309-5177

The Epidemic of Never Enough
It’s easy to lose sight of what you have when you’re immersed in a world telling you that you need more. Turn on the TV during any commercial break and you’ll most likely observe a business suggesting that you need something new in order to be better. It can be a challenge to feel satisfied with what you have when you’re constantly surrounded by these unsolicited proposals from companies. It’s no wonder so many of us are impacted by the epidemic of “never enough.” While progress should always be embraced, there is a difference between striving to be better and feeling like you’re never enough. I’ve found that there are two key changes you can make to shift your perspective away from the “never enough.” First, loving the process- you are far more likely to persevere through the challenges on your way to mastery if you love the process. And second, gratitude. We get into this and more on todays episode. Highlights: [00:05] Intro and reflection [01:05] The epidemic of never enough [07:00] My personal experiences with this concept [16:02] Discussion on the changes we can make to our mindset to quiet the feeling of never enough [19:22] An in-depth discussion of how eastern traditions combat the never enough concept [21:13] Reflection on the issue of the never enough epidemic and it’s solutions [23:05] Some insight from Steve Jobs [26:00] Closing thoughts and reflection prompts [28:13] Conclusion Enjoy! Unleash Your Voice with John Grisham
Writing is a skillful art. But it’s not as flashy as playing a musical instrument or sand-painting. One reason for this is that we’ve all been taught how to write in school. So, when we think about writing a novel — and you have thought about it if you’re an avid reader — we expect it to be easy. But it’s not. Unlike other art forms, you cannot teach writing. If you have ever given writing a shot, the first hurdle you bump into it is finding your niche. Who are you writing for? Once you figure that out and write your first draft, a bigger hurdle arises: How are you going to get published? John Grisham jumped both hurdles over 30 years ago. Since then, he’s become a household name with 28 consecutive number one fiction bestsellers. But he wasn’t a hotshot from the get-go. During his childhood, the world didn't have much in terms of technological entertainment. All John Grisham's household had was a radio they used to tune into the St. Louis Cardinals games. So, he and his family members amused themselves with an ancient form of entertainment: storytelling. Fast forward to adulthood, after getting sick of criminal defense and personal injury litigation, John polished off his storytelling chops and started writing. During one of the trials at the DeSoto County courthouse, he witnessed a gut-wrenching testimony of a twelve-year-old rape victim. He pondered the thought of what would have happened if the girl’s father had murdered her assailants. And that’s how Grisham found his niche with his first book, A Time To Kill; he combined his knowledge of the American legal system and the art of storytelling the novel, and many more since. To pursue his newly-found purpose, he woke up at 5 am to write before heading off to his 60-to-70-hour-per-week job. It took him three years, the support of his wife, and his desire to say “I wrote a book” to finish his first novel. Then his second hurdle hit. Rejection letters piled up, which surprisingly, gave him hope. He thought he wasn’t good enough, but his wife came up with a solution. And it worked. Since then, Grisham has written 46 books in total, including his breakout hit The Firm and other movie adaptations such as The Client, The Pelican Brief, and The Chamber. In today’s episode, John Grisham joins Kelly Corrigan to talk about his creative writing process, addressing controversial and difficult topics through fiction, and how seeing the work of others can be demotivating. He also gives his own strategy that got his first book published. Highlights from the conversation: How Grisham learned to craft compelling story plots Why should you always have an adaptable creative process? The role his wife played in his success as a writer Topics and themes Grisham would like to explore further and write books about Enjoy! --- Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive.
