Episode 156: Navigating a Mid-Career Crisis

We've all heard of the mid-life crisis - typically between ages 40-60.   A period of life where one may begin to struggle with their self-identity.   Typically characterized by feelings of dissatisfaction, inner turmoil, thoughts about mortality and legacy, etc.   What if I told you there's a similar phenomenon in your career?   Mid-Career Crisis.   You've always been a high-performing talent. Promotion every 1-2 years.   Perhaps you're a Director making at least $200K base.   You "made it" by almost every definition.   But rather than feeling blissful in your role,   You are feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, and confused.   What's next?   The inner turmoil looks something like this: 1. "I have climbed up so far. Do I continue up this ladder or pivot to a new one? Do I even want to?" 2. You begin to identify options and it feels like there are 100s of them. You find 6 new functions you could theoretically pivot to, 6 different industries with seemingly greener grass, new certifications you could study for, new business you could start, etc. Which option do you pursue? 3. Analysis Paralysis sets in. 4. Maybe you interview for a roles internally and externally and don't land any of them! 5. Fear of rejection. A bit of shame with some panic mixed in. 6. "Am I stuck? Am I still marketable? Can I even land a promotion anywhere else? Have I become overcompensated for my value?" 7. Plateau. Jaded. I had a short staycation with my family over the weekend.   It was our first trip as a family of 4 and it involved a 4 hour car ride with our soon to be 4 year old and teething 9-month-old.   Well, you can imagine.   I reflected on how I had imagined this trip and other milestone moments in motherhood.   And how not many of them have turned out even remotely as picture-perfect as my imagination.   Pre-motherhood, I remember hinting to others about what kind of mother I would be. If you had been subjected to these convos (sorry!), you might have conjured up an image of a mom who is...   Always fully present,   With an immaculately clean home,   Whose kids just love brussel sprouts.   And yes you guessed it.   Reality looks very different from the imagination.   What does any of this have to do with corporate leadership?   In this week's episode, we discuss 2 lessons from this that are applicable to corporate leadership. Pitched it to the Board. They said No, Not now. - Hired your team of A players. Finally assembled a team of rockstars. Time to deliver on your big metrics. After 6 months, no results, low morale. Your communication is your biggest asset as a leader. Motherhood is a full-time job. So is catapulting your career. You may be wondering..."Can one really do both well?" I know of so many women who struggle with this question. And as a mom to 2 small children, including a 5-month old who is currently resisting being bottle fed, I get it. It is hard. Perhaps the hardest thing you will ever do. In the throes of sleepless nights with your infant, making 3 variations of dinners to accommodate each picky eater, or chauffeuring your kids to sports games on weekends... You may wonder if career growth is even important. You may think to yourself, "I already make a good living. What if I just hang out at my current level?" And there is no wrong answer. Whatever you decide for your life is the right answer. Here's mine. I truly believe that motherhood is one of, but not the only role I get to play in my life. I believe that my ambitions and goals do not die on the vine because I am a mom. I believe the desires I have to grow myself professionally are God-given desires. And I believe that when I am fulfilled professionally, everyone else around me wins. I often imagine myself at the end of my life at the proverbial pearly gates being asked to give account for how I lived. To say, "Well, I was going to do more, but I couldn't because of my children??" Something about that doesn't sit well with me. Because to whom much is given, much is expected. That said, how does one do this successfully? If you were going to be mom and SVP making $500K... What would that need to look like in order for it to work?
